Hope this video blows up. Just finished my first season and cant stress how important my locals discord has been for networking and filling my gaps in knowledge.
I went to my first regional earlier this year and a piece of advice I would give anyone is DO NOT EXPECT TO CUT OR EVEN DO WELL AT YOUR FIRST EVENT!! It might sound harsh but if you go 2-4 drop or 2-7 at your first event when you expect to do well you will feel extremely bad about yourself. Go have fun, enjoy the event and try to learn as much as you can from everyone there they are supper friendly and willing to help
This is great advice honestly. You have to understand that you're learning and doing well at your first tournament against seasoned players is very difficult. Even going 2-4 means you won 2 sets! At a regional! That's awesome!
A good portion of the game is chance even if you're really good so even some of the best players don't make it far in sometimes. It's what puts me off the competitive aspect a little bit.
My list for learning competitive: -find premade teams that have a strategy you like -use those teams as a way to practice basic battle mechanics like switch timing and in-battle decisions -record matches so you can assess your gameplay and further recognize your own patterns -tweak the premade teams based on your weakpoints (the last step is also the starting point for building your own teams; swapping a pokemon or even EV spreads won't matter if you have no knowledge of your habits or the meta.

I've only been playing VGC for 1 year. Actually, the reason I did was because I participated in the Victory Road World Cup as a Team Belize member (finished 1-2)... Ill admit i did try to just team build right off the bat since I only had 2 months to prepare but glad I found VGC content creators to help me improve.

@PrimordialEspyVGC I've religiously been checking out Scooteezy on the daily lol. That how I managed to find some Mons I believe can work well. I'll def have to add Talon on my list to watch
With the first tip i think quite the opoosite could also work. Build a team with your faves and an strategy, practice with a friend, then see and ask what your team is lacking and use resources like Pikalytics and your friend to get some help. Like building a Deck in a card game! You start with the starter deck or a base version of it and then you upgrade it with new stuff. It may be impossible to recognize at the end, but that way you'll know your strategy perfectly
So build a team with your faves outside the meta if you want and practice with your buddies, then look which of your Pokémon can't keep up and change it with another one that's better!

Hey bro! I just turned on my switch today since like a month after sv release. I finally want to participate in a tournament so thanks for the video! Hope to battle with you at some point 🔥
I feel like there are several barriers to playing vgc that just aren’t present in 6v6 singles. Say what you will about Smogon’s tiering system, it’s hugely helpful that most Pokemon have detailed information on their strengths, limitations, most common sets, most common partners, and most common threats. You can’t build an entire team this way, but you can get to 4/6 fairly easily. Such a system doesn’t exist for vgc as far as I know. Watching a youtube video is nice, but plenty of teams use only Annihilape or Maushold, not both. Same with Dondozo-Tatsugiri. And I haven’t seen any videos directly comparing each tailwind setter. Usually the most they do is say “these exist, pick one. Unless you’re doing trick room. But maybe sometimes still pick one anyway”. Using rental teams is good, I agree, but they often have little documentation on the ev decisions they made. Using rental teams is good, I agree, but it’s hard to feel like you’re really learning anything when, after 30 games, you’re still not certain how to pick partner Pokemon for your main attacker, or how to build ev spreads. Speaking of ev spreads, most teams lack documentation on their ev spreads, meaning it’s hard to fully understand how to make your own ev spreads in the future because you’re not as certain which threats are worth focusing on and which ones are not worth preparing for. The two most helpful pieces of info I’ve seen I’ve seen are 1) A reg H speed tiers guide by TalonVGC. He explains max, mid, and minimum speed, and how trick room and tailwind interact with speed. 2) A video on why people often build teams wrong. It used Hoopa as an example but any Pokemon works. The video explains that many new players will take a Pokemon and focus mostly on finding mons that answer its threats, as opposed to complimenting its offenses. Of course having answers to your main threats is good, but Hoopa is somewhat limited in which mons it can hit super effectively, and finding mons to compliment its offenses is key to consistently making forward progress in a battle. Idk if you’re interested in making a vgc channel, or if you’re just posting this one video to help other new players. If you’re actually starting a channel, please feel free to use the points in my comment as video ideas. Best of luck!
@@UncalibratedAimbot thank you for the in depth comment! Definitely more videos to come on the subject of getting into VGC! TalonVGC is great and I highly recommend his stuff like the speed tier video. I'm hoping to make VGC more beginner friendly the best I can, but Smogon is absolutely unmatched.

This was so helpfull as well as a little reassuring since I've already started doing some of your tips like using using rentals (Archaludon rain) and slowly improving it (depending on previous matchups-loses) as i go up the smogon regulation H ladder
I love you mascot btw :3
@@axel8912 I'm glad the tips are working for you! Arch Rain is so good right now so it's a great team to start with. And thanks! Since my name is a joke on Primordial Sea I figured a little joke on Kyogre was perfect. 😅
yes thank you!! I just started getting into competitive pokemon. Luckily ive plahed pokemon as a kid and even now, while also playing all pokemon games. I had a basis in how it works but man was i overwhelmed but im also in a honeymoon pahse with it since im able to try out different pokemon and see what works. I dont mind the losing, i love the experimental partnof the game. Especially sinc3 comp pokemon is so intricate and fun
@@luissalinas9143 it can definitely be fun if you let it! But it's really nice to have resources to use too!
@@PrimordialEspyVGC it was fun, I unintentionally made a stall team with alolan exeggutor and toxapex as my base in a trick room team. It was really fun to use until I got up in the ranks and lost 😭😂
@@luissalinas9143 those high ladder players are no joke.
Love the experimental mentality XD! KEEP IT UP YO!! Will sometimes work against the best players purely because they don’t know what on earth you’re thinking
Hey man, just had to let you know I love your personality and humour, you're everything I love in a content creator. This is a great first video and although I've been playing VGC since mid Sword and Shield, I still have a long way to go to becoming the best I can be. I sometimes still click priority moves when Psychic Terrain is up. I love learning about VGC and new metas and this video has inspired me to start becoming more involved with the community. I kind of just team build for fun and jump into casual battles online or with friends with my teams and sometimes I find success and sometimes I get steamrolled horribly, but thats the joy of learning VGC. I'm subbing and turning on notifications to follow your VGC journey with you, good luck my man, hope to see you as big as Wolfey one day!
@@quinnloraine2303 thank you for the kind words! If I became 1/100th the size of Wolfe I would be blown away! Haha. I'm glad you're on this journey with me, new video coming soon!
Worlds really motivated me to start VGC. Did just 10 ranked battles and reached rank 5 Pokéball tier! Grinding it out, while not getting burnt out.

Your video was amazing thank you so much for all the info and Im lucky cause I found an awesome RUclipsr that recently started his journey...wish you the best...I also want to try the competitive aspect of the pokemon but Im playing slowly all the games just for the nostalgia and also cause I recently bought all the consoles that I didn't have so now I can transfer all of my lovely Pokémon from my leaf green to the recent games...and to be honest I wanted to share this silly adventure with other people on RUclips or twitch lets say cause that would be so much fun, at least for me but I don't have the confidence to do something like that and also I don't think I have the gear etc. so yeah...at least I hope you achieve whatever you want and most of all have fun and ill be there for this awesome adventure of yours, wish you the best!!!!!!!

I am someone who has only watched vgc online, and did very few battles myself (on Pokemon showdown)
I did a regional for fun because it was in my city, and have to say, 3-6 was better than I thought I would do. I made my own team, and didn't really know how to use it, and still managed to win multiple times. Goes to show that anyone can play.
@@shiny_lock Absolutely! VGC is for anyone and everyone and getting good just takes some effort!
@@TheRichBelize that is awesome that you were able to compete so quickly! Team building is rough but you have to do what you have to do to represent your country! Hope it's been a great year since then!
@PrimordialEspyVGC TBH I kind of became lax 😅 but since the announcement of Reg H I've been researching for the past 3 weeks and I'm finally building my team in game! Still new to this and I know I have much more to learn. But I'll def be looking out for more new videos from you so we can learn together lol
@@TheRichBelize definitely! Make sure to check out people like Scooteezy and Talon as they make tons of Reg H content!
Great video! Extremely helpful and really funny too! Keep it up

Very useful information
The two most helpful pieces of info I’ve seen I’ve seen are
1) A reg H speed tiers guide by TalonVGC.
