Tim Daggetts biasness towards Dominique Dawes was so blatant and disrespectful. He called her out on every tiny mistake on beam. Shannon Miller comes up and does beam routine with a big a hop at the end and he praised her. Smh
@@Hervinbalfour I honestly wanted to slap tf out of Tim when he said, "idk she had that big step, I'm sorry but I just don't agree with it" like why can't he just congratulate her? I remember watching these Nationals and cheering on Awesome Dawesome. she trained about 45 minutes from where I grew up and everyone in our community loved, supported, and cheered for her. Tim was hating sooo.. hard on Dom having a sweep night..Shannon was fine..she had just come off of 2 AA titles..but her beam step clearly said Dawes was the winner..n her fx tumbling said the same..Id have went and cut sum1 if Dom hadnt won floor
Shannon is one of my favorite gymnasts because of her sheer determination, mental toughness, and perfectionism. However, power was her weakness. If you pay close attention, you will notice that she could barely get that full-in around. People need to be be more realistic when comparing Dom and Shannon. Under today’s scoring system, which I love btw, Dom would have eaten up the competition, and Tim would have been bowing to Dom like they all bow to Simone as the queen.
It's weird how many glaringly obvious mistakes the judges and commentators overlooked back in those days. That beam dismount from Shannon Miller with the step forward and the chest so far down would kill her score now, and she missed nearly every handstand in her bars routine. I do think the judges are too hard on the gymnasts technically now, but back then they were far too lenient.
In the 1990s, there was a mandatory 0.5 deduction for having tits and/or weighing more than 80lbs. Thankfully we don't have that deduction anymore. The 1990s were all about fetishizing pre-pubescent girls and trying to keep grown women as chidllike as possible. Thank god gymnasts can be grown women now!
I'm thinking the code then must not have emphasized handstands on the top of the bar as much because almost no one did them and no one ever comments on how they should have.
I always watch these old ones and think, I wonder what these girls would say if I could go back in time and tell a girl like Amanda Bordon that in two years she would be gymnastics royalty. I wonder if she would believe me?
At the time I didn’t like the fact they changed the scoring system but now it’s so much better . Almost nothing to separate them back then I feel like the scores were more arbitrary eg 9.95 - yeah really good but we can’t give a 10. Keri strug fall - can’t watch it !! Horrible
The way Tim Daggett said "And one more time, Dominique Dawes can...do no wrong." Bias for Shannon Miller definitely showing. No wonder Dominique didn't listen to the commentators when she watched the recordings.
Imho I think Amanda should've scored higher than Shannon on bars. Shannon's releases were kinda close to the bar, she was short on a few handstands, and her dismount should've gotten a big deduction--she took a few steps and significantly piked it. Yeah, Amanda cowboyed her double front a little and took a little hop when she landed, but it wasn't as significant as Shannon. Plus, Amanda's releases were higher and cleaner to me. They're both good bar workers, but I think Amanda should've beaten Shannon.
And I think Jenni was underscored, other than the slight form break on the geinger, her dismount was cleaner than Shannon's and she stuck it, but scored almost a tenth lower. I would've put her on the podium
Yes. I always wondered why they made such a big deal out of Shannon's age when Borden and Strug were the same age and Dawes was a year older than all three of them.
It's because Shannon won the silver AA medal in Barcelona and then was the world champ in 93 and 94. If Dawes hadn't kept falling and losing the titles, she would have been a bigger deal.
I think Jenni was a bit underscored, I would've given a similar score to Shannon Miller's. Both Shannon and Amanda had errors in their landings, but both were given relatively generous scores ... I'm glad they don't show the weight anymore. The height is fine, but now we know not all bodies are made equal, you can't have someone as tall as Summer Reid and expect them to be the same weight as someone like Jennie Thompson or Amanda Borden
Shannon always was a beautiful dancer. You don’t see that kind of artistry any more. Why didn’t they show Moceanu? She competed at this event too and she’s the same age as Jennie Thompson. I have the VHS and I saw her bars and beam. Why aren’t they in this upload?

This is the only thing that disgusts me where Olympic gymnasts are concerned these girl's start extremely young they must eat sleep piss walk gymnastics. They never have the option of being regular children, they bleed hurt sprain break there bodies everyday hrs on end year after year and it all comes down to a lil over a minute performance that even if u give a flawless performance u still have to stress the fuck out as if u haven't enough of that already wondering worried terrified to glance over to the judges table and ask yourself which one is the bigot this go round.? Which one despises my country? When a person dedicates there life for there dream they shouldn't have to concern themselves with giving such a powerful performance but receives an unfair score because a judge is harboring the anger they feel about the Romanian government that has nothing to do with this girl's achievement!!! The shit should be illegal!!! It not being about what it should "THE TALENT" 4and all about what it shouldn't corruption/racism/politics, all that imperative shit ya know👎😫😰💦💧WTFU!!$!
How did Dawes have a high start score without any major releases? Despite the stuck landing, 9.9 seemed high. Her handstands were short on her pirouetting (spelling?) like Shannon's.
calculusfan1 Her shaposh mount was highly rewarded, as was her 1.5, which she introduced. Also, her dismount gave her a lot. That being said, I'm glad she later added the Hindorff release, as it made her routine much more exciting. She did it just a few months later at Worlds, so it may just not have been ready for this competition.
I gotta agree that Dawes shouldn't have won floor. Dawes may have had more exciting tumbling, but the choreography was horrendous and had no flow. Miller had solid tumbling and amazing choreography. Her routine also didn't contain that obvious balance error that Dawes had.
Stop! There is NO WAY you thought those routines were on par. BTW, this is the last quad that allowed for a bunch of easy front tumbling to even start from a 10.
Ridiculous! Shannon’s tumbling was soooo much weaker than what Dawes did, it’s not even comparable. The fact that she even scored as close to Dawes as she did just proves how biased the scoring was in her favor. Gymnastics is about power, amplitude, and difficulty first. And Dawes choreography and music was just fine, just a different more dynamic style.
Miller was using a 3 year old routine. Super boring, and weak code whored tumbling. She also had a big mistake on her first pass which was as bad as Dawes's 2nd pass.
Summer Reid got screwed on her balance beam score! That routine was insanely difficult and she barely made any adjustments. The politics in women's gymnastics is really unfortunate.
It’s hard to believe that they would televise these girls weights. Because your are involved in a national Gymnastics championship you have to give up the right to keep your weight private? Unbelievable!
Tim is insufferable. This fucking shit about Amanda having a bad UB landing?...and excuse me, Dawes's routine had errors? I'm not even the biggest Dawes' gymnastics fan and I can't see any errors except the .1 on the landing. Oh help me Jesus.
I think they just mean like it's not that bad if you compare it to how serious it looks, a broken back could have ended her career and knock injuries are obviously very dangerous for paralysis so when you put it in perspective, it being sprained doesn't seem so bad especially as she had made a comeback
Strug got her masters from Stanford and ended up moving to DC to work for the GOP. Real job, even if I don’t share her political beliefs. Dawes, Borden, Phelps and Moceanu all have their own gyms. I think Shannon is the only one who lives purely on endorsements and speaking engagements. I wish I didn’t have to work.

Shannon was overscored on both beam and floor. Boring 3 year old floor routine with pathetically weak tumbling other than an ok 1st pass (which still had a bad landing). Nearly fell on her beam dismount.
Just check the scoring system back then. Shannon had a start value that never went over ten, so every little mistake she made instantly showed in her final scores. Also I think not just in this competition but even 2 years later she was highly overscored for routines with missed handstands on bars and lack of height and distance in releases and on vault. I always wondered how she managed to be so highly praised back then even though her dancing was on point and delicate.
The only apparatus I think Shannon should have won was bars being as Dawes didn’t have a release move… but even then as much as I like Shannon, she was very overscored in a lot of these meets

slip-up only this time he says it as if Shannon hadn't one. I suppose he felt we needed not any reminding of hers. It not being about what it should "THE TALENT" 4and all about what it shouldn't corruption/racism/politics, all that imperative shit ya know👎😫😰💦💧WTFU!!$!
cool
nice
How did Dawes have a high start score without any major releases? Despite the stuck landing, 9.9 seemed high. Her handstands were short on her pirouetting (spelling?) like Shannon's.
calculusfan1 Her shaposh mount was highly rewarded, as was her 1.5, which she introduced. Also, her dismount gave her a lot. That being said, I'm glad she later added the Hindorff release, as it made her routine much more exciting. She did it just a few months later at Worlds, so it may just not have been ready for this competition.
+calculusfan1 The rules for handstands were very different in this COP. Her pirouettes were worth a lot of value in this COP.
Horrible horrible HORRIBLE fall from Strug on the UB in her fluff. God... Ouch. ...
That Jennie Thompson looks like she is 7 or 8 years old.
@TheFoxWhisperer You are 12-13 in 7th grade.
Summer Reid reminds me of Rebecca Bross!
So easy tumbling...a simple stepout layout...nah...I'm fair I felt Dawes uneven bars was subpar with no release moves...Dawes had a better day
Miller was using a 3 year old routine.
110 pounds ?? Back when gymnasts got weight shamed if they went over 90.
They literally made several comments about Summer’s size, calling her a “Giant” when she was on beam. The commentary back then...no words!
Shannon Miller 3:15, 26:50, 33:30
Kerri Strug injury recovery 9:10
Amanda Borden 14:25, 40:00
Jennie Thompson 23:45, 30:50
shannon shpuld have won floor
It’s hard to believe that they would televise these girls weights. Because your are involved in a national Gymnastics championship you have to give up the right to keep your weight private? Unbelievable!
I do not agree with that
Either
Tim’s been doing it too long
Why are these comments so old? like 8 years?????????? 2021
The 90’s were so campy 😂😂😂
Summer ried should have won the beam and shannon should have won the floor
Dawes was on fire but those back handsprings are just... offensive. Everyone has their Achilles heel
Tim is insufferable. This fucking shit about Amanda having a bad UB landing?...and excuse me, Dawes's routine had errors? I'm not even the biggest Dawes' gymnastics fan and I can't see any errors except the .1 on the landing. Oh help me Jesus.
Rita Brown and Mary Lee Tracy with gymnasts in the same rotation. Awkward!
justalilsparkle78 what was the drama?
"only a sprained back". Okay :/
I think they just mean like it's not that bad if you compare it to how serious it looks, a broken back could have ended her career and knock injuries are obviously very dangerous for paralysis so when you put it in perspective, it being sprained doesn't seem so bad especially as she had made a comeback
Amy Chow is a doctor now. She's the only one from the 1996 Olympics who actually got a real job lol
Yes you're right! A real job.. I mean not one of those fake jobs where the athletes get million dollar deals on endorsements!!
Omg Dawes leo was AWFUL😭so way Amy’s😭giving my grandmas couch
Tim is such a hater. He only wanted Shannon to win
Man he was so bias
Meh, the judges really took the crowd's opinion of gymnasts too far in this competition :I
Argh what is with the Confederate flag!!
Lisa Starseed Expat Amen! I NoticedIt IMMEDIATELY when FLOOR began!!!! I was reading through the comments section first, before I posted something about it, because I wanted to see if someone else had noticed that HATEFUL FLAG!!!!! So, I was quite happy to see that someone else had noticed that flag as well, or like me was so angered and upset at seeing that flag at a NATIONAL TELEVISED SPORTING EVENT; that they felt COMPELLED enough and ANGRY enough to actually “SPEAK UP”, (For Lack Of A Better Term), And say something about it!!!!!!!!!!! I know the times were different, believe me I know because I myself was 14 back in 1994, HOWEVER, It Still Does Not Mean We Should Just; Overlook, Ignore, OR IN MY OPINION THE VERY WORST THING WE COULD DO IS: Act As If It Does Not Matter That Much!!!!!!!!!!! That EVIL INSTRUMENT OF: HATRED, OPPRESSION, BIGOTRY AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, DISCRIMINATION, SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP IN ANY CONVERSATION; Even On A Video And Comment Section About The Sport We All LOVE, Artistic Women’s Gymnastics!!!!!!!!!
Lisa Starseed Expat unfortunately that was Georgia’s state flag at the time
I noticed that bullshit shit also its 2020 and ppl still think it's not offensive.
We're the judges paid off? Shannon should have won beam and floor.
sailormoonlove With all of those glaring deductions? No way! Her dismount was damn near a fall! In fact she was overscored this entire competition!
Miller was screwed by cheating USAG who wanted to give Dawes a legacy and this competition was so fixed
Really!
Dawes outperformed Miller in every event.
