I must add this, the new Ural's have fuel injectors. These bikes can do 70 mil. on the open road.
Hey guys - you didn’t mention one of the most obvious benefits of getting a sidehack rig: it stands up by itself. I bought my first motorcycle in 1963, so I’ve been riding even longer than Darrell has! I’m hoping that my Ural will allow me to enjoy another decade of riding. My leg strength is still OK at 75, but I don’t believe I’ll be able to handle my GS at 85.
By the way, another thing that’s a pain about the starter motor reverse strategy is that you’ve got to keep the bike balanced while it’s creeping backwards. Depending on how squirrely the parking situation was, I always thought that there was at least a possibility that I would drop my K1200LT while I was shuffling it backwards through the oil slicks and the gravel.
I too had a K1200LT and it's reverse scared me and it was the only bike I ever had they would just randomly fall over! None of my Urals have ever done that! 😎
@@JamesAllmond I never had mine fall over by itself, but get just a few degrees off plumb and you’re doomed - the weight on that thing is so high. I had a newly-laid blacktop edge crumble on me while I was waiting for a pilot car to lead a line of vehicles through the paving section, and when my right foot dropped three inches, it was game over. It’s also the only bike I ever had that I couldn’t pick up by myself. I’ve walked up wings and full-dressers with my ass, but there was something about the geometry of that thing that didn’t work with my legs and hips.
Ural is the most versatile motorcycle of the 8 bikes that I own! I recently pulled the tub off of my M70 (only took about 5 minutes to take off and 10 minutes to reinstall) and rode it solo. It was a little hokey but not that bad. The only downside to a Ural is the lack if speed and extended highway use… but who wants to do that on a Ural anyway.
When you buy a ural, your buying a real military motorcycle. Not like a civilian Hummer or jeep, these are not the same as the military vehicles. No bike on the road is like it,. You can not compare it to them. It is set up for a war theater. Like all military combat vehicles they are set up to do 40 to 50 mil on class1 roads, 3 to 10 mil on class 2 , & 1, roads .Off road You should have a norther bike. If you use it right it's a great bike. From your home to the bad lands or woods, have fun.
