    Oh what a tragedy....
    NOT!
In any case, on a four engine airplane such as this, when you lose one engine you lose 25% of your power but 40% of your performance, due to drag caused by the control surface deflections necessary to keep it flying straight. Engines are mounted on pylons attached to the wings so that in the case of the rotating assembly locking up suddenly, the engine pylon will snap from the imparted torque and the motor will simply drop free. It also saves the wing in case of a fire, which keeps the flames and heat away from the main spar. In worst case scenario, the engine simply burns off and falls to the ground. The sudden loss of weight and drag actually helps the plane fly and improves performance.
He seemed to have it under control, though the fact that they couldn't put the fire out makes me wonder if the fire bottles worked. This is Russia, right? So the answer is PROBABLY NOT. Why did it crash in the end? Either the drunk flying the thing got slow and stalled and/or Vmc'd it into the ground or the wing spar did snap in the end, causing the outer section of the right wing to literally fall off. In any case it sucks that these people had to die. Without Vladimir Putin being on board...

Il-76s are heavy-lift transports, an aircraft type that most militaries never have enough of, so therefore important.
MAJOR fire around the outboard right engine, that apparently went out (extinguished by the crew?), and then something completely detached and fell away (part of the engine?) Aircraft seemed to be flying steadily afterwards, but descending. The fire or whatever COULD have affected that entire wing - damaged the other engine, cut hydraulic and/or mechanical links, render flaps and control surfaces non-functional, etc..
No indication that it was direct hostile action, like a missile hit, but this is a possibility. If the aircraft was flying comparitively low, a couple of dudes with a man-portable SAM could do it. Alternatively, some kind of systems failure / maintenance issue, possibly caused by the sanctions and/or the heightened demands of the war.

Unlikely. The three engine operation thing requires no other issues. That aircraft had a lot of something coming from the fuselage, or maybe the wing root. So there was other damage. I wouldn't be shocked if they took a missile in #4 and debris sprayed #3 and the wing, or that they had an uncontained failure which also took out other systems. Russian military aircraft aren't built to world civil aviation standards either, there's a reasonable chance they were overloaded.

It seems like a reasonable guess.
However, an engine, out of 4, on fire, shouldn't have been enough to make it crash. Also because the fire had been extinguished, as it's seen in the clip.
There likely were other problems also (like a big chunk of the airplane falling off at 1:23 ).

I'm anti war. But what if he didn't move in? NATO were moving in to essentially encircle their territory. And the majority of people in the Donbass identify more with Russia than europe, they even held elections to become sovereign from Kiev.
So I'm not sure this is about Putin's vanity sister.

It looks like an engine fire led to structural failure. They got the fire out and seemed reasonably fine until the damaged engine fell off. Planes are not engineered to have their engines fall off.
