Do you think our country should have allowed Cuba to become an anti US military base? We did the same thing Putin and Russia is doing. We were more fortunate as the world wasn't funding Cuba and they met our demands before we had to invade them. Russia's demands had been simple and here we are acting like Russia is the bad guy. If Russia were willing to raze the civilians of Ukraine then they could have ended Ukraine's resistance quickly. Since they can't do that for reasons, the war is going to be long and drawn out with many countries funding Ukraine.
America should not have been behind Ukraines coup in Feb 2014 or Putin would have not invaded Crimea in March 2014. Then America spent millions backing an anti Russian president after the coup the American CIA orchestrated ousted a pro Putin president. Russia is defending themselves just like America do in a similar situation.

The Ukrainian Air Force inherited _sixty_ airworthy TU-22M and scrapped all of them mostly due to _American_ pressure, as the US tried not to irk the ruzzians. The same US who incidentally also signed the Budapest Memorandum, upholding and guaranteeing the Ukrainian Independence and Sovereignty. Just imagine the value of such aircraft in the current war!
Anything the US may do to help Ukraine now is both due, and overdue.
Lest we forget.
Too bad that Ukraine didn't "just say no" to that pressure. Bill Clinton conned them, and then his wife had the audacity to be on the gutting of the Memorandum when Putler seized Crimea and half of Donbas with barely a slap on the wrist from the US.

Nevertheless, it was unexplainable why Ukraine didn't build up its own military in the 30 years since, with the kind of arms they want given to them today (fighters, long-range fires, etc.). Also, before 2014 last 2 Ukrainian ministers of defences were actual Russian citizens and they left Ukraine as soon as the war started. Ukraine gave part of its Tu-22Ms, Tu-95MSs, Tu-160, and hundreds of missiles(Kh-55, Kh-22) to Russia, and the rest were scrapped under the agreement led by the US and it was not about nuclear arsenal at all. And yes, there was a significant responsibility of the Ukrainian government and people too.

There was an accidental ejection in one of these bombers while it was on the ground a few years back. Perhaps the Russians decided to just unplug and weld the seats down and pocket the money sent to fix it right. I guess we will never know.

Presumably it got hit and made it part of the way back to base but not all the way. Most anti-air missiles don't make the plane explode like they do in the movies, they have a proximity head that hits the plane like a shotgun blast. Fragments may damage vital parts of the plane but not make it crash immediately.
