I think my three favourite DoPs have to be Robert Richardson, Roger Deakins and Tonino Delli Colli (who shot The Good The Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon A Time In America among others). Colli shot some of the most beautiful shots in film in history in my opinion and he’s criminally underrated, by which I mean, no one seems to really talk about him despite shooting some of the most iconic shots ever.
Gregg Toland would have deserved at least an honorary mention though.. :/ (I'm Hungarian, was happy for Vilmos Zsigmond's "mention", but please! One is great, but the other made a blast in/to cinematography history, saved to the Library of Congress/ Natonal Film Reserve.)

Greetings from Spain!! Keep doing this amazing videos for all movie lovers. All of them are amazing. Congratulations!!!! Some ideas: Cary Grant, Elia Kazan, David Lean and William Wyler.
Hola Carlos! Muchas gracias por tus elogios! Estamos en proceso de doblaje al español. Espero que podamos estrenarlo antes del verano. A ver si la guerra no tiene otros planes para nosotros.
There is an underlying problem with the presses made for this video. A very deep problem. If it is true that the work of directors of photography is damned eclipsed by the great names of directors and actors, and therefore it is right to remember the importance of their work and their immense work, it is also true that you are confusing things, and that is, one thing is taken for granted, which is summed up in this principle formula: if professionals are unfairly undervalued or poorly remembered, it does not mean that their value in itself, is superior or even just on par with those who put them or put them in the shade. Here the error is gross, and not a little. And this too can be summed up in an explanatory formula which clarifies why, however, directors of photography will never, ever be able to claim to outclass authors and actors in the final results, or even just be equal, since success is descended from authors and actors, and the formula is this: - The best director of photography can never make it to a final product of the highest level without a director and extraordinary or brilliant actors; while, conversely, even with mediocre cinematographer, persono poor, still you can get monstrously fabulous and successful end results. This video is absolutely wrong. If the Director has the actors up to scratch and he is a high-level professional, he can still achieve great results;conversely, he can not do. End of story. The rest is bullshit. There is nothing wrong, it is simply the nature of things. Van Gogh could have the worst colors in his hands, but any of his paintings would still be brilliant. Not vice versa. And it doesn't end there. To show that what I say is objective, it is enough to know that in any case the photograph, the angle of shooting, the light, the backcground, all kinds of lighting, the choice of film, the dominants and who can have more, if it is true that it is a deputed thing to do to the director of photography, it is equally true that everything depends on the result that the director wants to obtain and not the director of photography, whose magnificence, god forbid, is in his ability to be a magnificent performer, but always the performer remains. Not only that, another icing on the cake: if someone objects, as is known, that many directors of photography (especially at Hollood In any case, even the best atmsofere or the best results of lighting and composition and continuity, are still results to which the director of photography must reach according to the tastes, preferences and final artistic sensibilities of the director, period. No use making up bullshit. If in the world of cinema it is the directors and actors who remain the most in the spotlight, there is a reason. It is directors and actors who hold the real reason for the final result. This does not mean that all professionals should not be appreciated, on the contrary!, from costume designers, electricians, stunt-men, set designers, executive producers, publishing secretaries, dialogists, screenwriters, of course, but they are the arms and legs. The director is the mind and becomes the transcendent mind of the work and the actors are the soul of the director, and it is right and natural that they are the most remembered.
Thank you! This video doesn´t receive much views recently, while it´s really one of my favorites. I´m a fan of Finland! Nothing better than your saunas
Please, talk about "There will be blood" for hours! I would love that! Thank You for your effort and work you put into this channel! Never seen such good documentaries on film as yours.
Thanx for the video gentlemen. (And ladies, I'm sure.) I just discovered you recently and was very pleased to find at the conclusion of this particular one that your top three is also my personal top three. Especially Deakins!
Just had to jump in …Listing great cinematographers is a daunting task. Ive seen a lot. You will always miss someone who deserves a mention. Some of the greats never get mentioned because very few have seen their work. More often non English speaking countries don’t get the kudos they deserve in terms of cinematographers. BTW Hoyte is Dutch not Swiss.

Great list, although I would've included "the prince of darkness" Gordon Willis, whose work in The Godfather trilogy, Manhattan and All the President's Men was astonishing and went completely unrecognized, and Svet Nykvist, Bergman's cinematographer
I somehow came across your channel and have not stopped consuming your content. Amazing stuff. One of, if not the best film related channels on RUclips. Truly thankful for your stuff.
Hi Andre! We really wish to do it some day, but it will be impossible without sponsorship because everything related to the music with copyright is quickly banned by youtube. Now we use music we pay in epidemicsound and similars. So, we have to wait until our patreon grows up to get independent of youtube monetization.
much more people need know about this chanel, it`s awesome

The movie that really made me love the visual was "He Walked by Night" - John Altman. The idea that he closely studied Rembrandt's use of light and shadow, then directly applied it to lower budget crime movies totally grabbed me. This channel now has 2 of my favorite uploads on RUclips.

This was fantastic. An informative and engrossing documentary of the unsung heroes of cinema. The only surprise was the exclusion of the great cinematographer, John Toll. Nevertheless, you have a new subscriber.
Great job Kino!! 2007 was one of the best years for movies!
Great Job!!!
Damn good video
Awesome blossom
Great work. I will say there's a difference between Camera Operators and DP's/Cinematographers. Not all DP's operate. Cam Op is a crew position in and of itself.
El mejor.
Good list. They did however, confuse director of photography/cinematography and operator as the same position.
I feel sorry that you did not mention Michael Ballhaus . Otherwise thumbs up.
Well, it's hard to say how much is the DP. Most directors have a very good idea of exactly what shots they want.
Many thanks for the video.
Lord Hoyte Van Hoytema at nr 15??? and ZERO WOMAN? C'mon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Search further.. Van Hoytema work is getting even better: Tenet, Nope, Oppenheimer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gift that keeps on giving. Your video needs to be updated ASAP.
Absolutely. It even maybe needs to be extended to at least 30 names, because we forgot about many incredible DoPs.
Great channel got suggested by a friend of mine. I should have added
Christopher doyle
I know there is a lot of talented cinematographers so it's very hard to make a list. I consider doyle as one of the greatest eyes behind a camera. His collaboration with wong kar wai is pure art. It feels like each shots have life and it tells a whole story itself.

I like the music choices in this video
More views!!!!!!! Why so low? More please... This is good chanel.... Fan from finland
Thank you! This video doesn´t receive much views recently, while it´s really one of my favorites. I´m a fan of Finland! Nothing better than your saunas
@@OkoloKino you rules....
No Robbie Muller 😢
Please, talk about "There will be blood" for hours! I would love that! Thank You for your effort and work you put into this channel! Never seen such good documentaries on film as yours.
ima keep it real chief, your accent would be infinitely less distracting and more endearing than paying a narrator.
We, actually, paying a narrator)
@@OkoloKino i know i think it would be better in your actual voice
Thanx for the video gentlemen. (And ladies, I'm sure.) I just discovered you recently and was very pleased to find at the conclusion of this particular one that your top three is also my personal top three. Especially Deakins!
Just had to jump in …Listing great cinematographers is a daunting task. Ive seen a lot. You will always miss someone who deserves a mention. Some of the greats never get mentioned because very few have seen their work. More often non English speaking countries don’t get the kudos they deserve in terms of cinematographers. BTW Hoyte is Dutch not Swiss.
A grand video. But ever heard of the prince of darkness? I guess he would have been 11.
Gordon Willis?

❤❤❤
whats the movie called at 31:23
Children of men (2006)
Great list, although I would've included "the prince of darkness" Gordon Willis, whose work in The Godfather trilogy, Manhattan and All the President's Men was astonishing and went completely unrecognized, and Svet Nykvist, Bergman's cinematographer
Great! Thank you for your feedback!
Extensive research and material as usual
I somehow came across your channel and have not stopped consuming your content. Amazing stuff. One of, if not the best film related channels on RUclips. Truly thankful for your stuff.
Thank you, Isaac!
Need another Hidden Heroes with the SOUND GUYS! not just recording but editing, foley sfx etc etc
Hi Andre! We really wish to do it some day, but it will be impossible without sponsorship because everything related to the music with copyright is quickly banned by youtube. Now we use music we pay in epidemicsound and similars. So, we have to wait until our patreon grows up to get independent of youtube monetization.
Sad about the prince of darkness but I greatly admire what this channel has done for the community.
Thank you! Do not hesitate to share our works with your friends!
below 2k views in this is nothing short of a crime! Imma share the shit outta this!
Hey! Thank you!)
Good job, I share your channel with every movie fan I know.
Thank you for your support! That means a lot to us!
@@OkoloKino do one on cinematographers too.
This was amazing to watch
Thank you Ruthy! If you want to support us join our Patreon or become a sponsor on RUclips! It helps us a lot to do our best for you!
If you are going to praise a cinematographer why pick Hateful Eight? It was filmed almost entirely on set in a single setting.
Hoyte van Hoytema and Wally Pfister are also great
wtf
Hoyte van Hoytema on the 15th place?
Dude he's like top 5, cmon
Just strange because he's number 80 on my list - and that's being generous.
