You are really taking me back to my college days. I was banned from Tekken 3 in the college game room, because I was unstoppable (and I didn't use Eddy). A rivalry with an old friend in Gran Turismo 1 and 2. Also playing Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 in the middle of the night, in the dark. All my friends and I have a bond to this day with Final Fantasy VIII. I miss these days.
Such awesome nostalgia. I keep discovering more PlayStation games to play. I can't believe how many unique and interesting games came out on the PlayStation.
As soon as you mentioned some games going even more budget friendly than Greatest Hits, I KNEW you were gonna hold up Darkstone! Got way more than my money's worth on that one as a kid. It's got a cool vibe, and is still fairly cheap to this day (was even $10 when I picked it up a couple years back).
Happy 30th anniversary to the PS1 here! I had so many memories playing so many great games like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, RE1, RE2, RE3, others that really made people like me buy it in the first place.
The ps1 came out December 3rd 1994 "30 years ago" I was impressed how good the graphics was at the time and the startup sound menu got me hooked. Driver, gran turismo ff7, 2extreme, jet moto, gex, ect the memory card save stats you had to buy so many because of all the cool games that was out
Swear to god. I’ve seen multiple RUclipsrs who say metal gear and final fantasy are their favorite franchises. I thought I was in the minority for the longest time. Final fantasy 7-X were excellent. And i spent so many hours of my life on RE4. And Dino Crisis.
I remember my older brother getting a PlayStation because he wanted to play Final Fantasy VII. I didn't get to play too far into it myself before he went back to college and I had to wait all the way up until Christmas break to play the game. As soon as he was home I was digging through his car trunk to find his PlayStation! Those were fun times. I also played a ton of Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Tony Hawk 1, Final Fantasy VIII and IX and Symphony of the Night, and I got to experience Final Fantasy V and Chrono Trigger for the first time ever on that system. It's easily one of my favorite consoles of all time, possibly my favorite.
I remember my brother had acquired one from a friend in College at the time, and I can remember playing the crap out of: Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Syphon Filter (GREAT game), Megaman X4, and honorable mentions go to the NFL Gameday series , Specifically Gameday 98, we played the crap out of it! Awesome Video John!
The price difference is why I went with the PS1 instead of the N64. Almost every game on PS1 was 40 bucks vs 70 for the N64. You could either save 30 or add an extra 10 and get another great game. No brainer. That said, Kagero: Deception II, Resident Evil 1-3, Silent Hill, Future Cop LAPD, Oddworld, Colony Wars, Tenchu, Castlevania, Bushido Blade, there really are so many great games for the console.
A bunch of games I remember seeing for the first time on Playstation, I remember starting up CoolBoarders and soon as it was all loaded taking the game out and putting a CD in in the Playstation listening to it while i played was amazing to me.
I loved playing Destruction derby. In my opinion it was a hidden gem for me, I actually liked Wipeout as well because it was different from many racers. Odd world was my favorite platform, I loved Tekken as a fighter and my angry brother tossed it like a frisbee and it shattered because he lost to the end boss repeatedly. Soul Reaver was pretty fun, there were so many great games on PS1. Honorable mention to the very first Medal of Honor game, Metal Gear Solid, the first Grand theft auto was so fun and it was neat how you could listen to radio stations, FF7 was a great game!!!! Me and my brother loved it because we could take turns watching and playing it.
Did not know you are an Eagles fan. Go Birds from a Bronco Fan. I love PS1. I had one as an 8 year old and it blew my mind with the little collection of games I had Crash3, Tony Hawk 1 and 2, Gran Turismo, Digimon World 3, Jade cacoon, and Nuclear strike were in my collection.
So many great memories! Rival Schools, CTR, Twisted Metal, Tekken 3 the Street Fighter games good times! Also I think the PSX version of Diablo is the only co-op controller version of the game.
@@johnhancockretro hey john, i just posted the PlayStation 1 boot up screen. for you. i love the ps1 SCPH-5501 box in the background. anyways i had so much fun with the PlayStation. i hope you enjoy the rest of your night. stay safe/😁😁😁😰😰😰
Driver was such an incredible game. It had destructible environments! Granted it was just chairs, tables and fences, but I had never seen that done before!
I didn't get one until around a year after launch, but my neighbor had it and all we played that first year was the 2 games she had, Ridge Racer and Battle Arena Toshiden. After that for me was Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Test Drive 4, Driver, and Oddworld.
Nice list John. My list would be Resident Evil, Legacy of Kain series, Twisted Metal 2, Metal Gear, Tekken 2, Marvel Super Heroes, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Doom, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy series, Tecmo’s Deception, Critical Depth
In 1998, at 13, in a trip to NYC with family, I got myself a PS1 along with 4 games. Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Bushido Blade 2 and Time Crisis. I stayed in NYC for a week and a half and, by the end of the trip, I've beaten Time Crisis, was half way through unlocking everything in Bushido Blade 2 and I've almost beaten the entirety of FF7 and MGS.
I bought a PS1 specifically to play FF7 after watching a friend play it. I didn't beat it back then but as an adult I replay it every one or two months from start to finish on Nintendo Switch. I only had a handful of PS1 games though: FF7 and 8, FF Tactics, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Legend of Dragoon and Metal Gear Solid, but they make up some of my best gaming memories!
I cant believe were at the (29) 30 year anniversary! I preordered my system at Electronics Boutique mo months before and got the Hear It Now Play It Later demo and i was in love.
Has anyone ever told you that you look and especially sound like John C Reilly? Also, great list. Very similar to my personal list and my introduction to the ps1 in the summer of 96.
Couldn't afford one at launch, so my friends and I would rent one for slumber parties and stuff. Wipeout and Ridge Racer were by far our favorite launch titles. I still fire both of them up all the time. I'm in the same boat with you on Tekken 3, just such a well made port. Dark Stone is a classic, no shame there.
I bought my original PS1 for Resident Evil. Nothing like it at the time so I just had to have it. Funny you mention Robotron X. I enjoyed it as well (both versions). Found the N64 version in a Blockbuster Video bargain bin for like $5. Wipeout XL was bar-none my favorite racer on the system...
Gran Turismo is one of my favorite game series! I think that GT3 is my favorite of all of them because I played so much of it on PlayStation2. Also, have you played Star Wars demolition? It is basically twisted metal with Star Wars vehicles.
I bought the PS1 for MGS because I played the original two Metal Gear games on my MSX computer and I was thrilled when I found out that there was going to be a Metal Gear game for that Playstation thingie. Would't have considered buying one otherwise (or any other console for that matter). Came for MGS, stayed for Final Fantasy, Chocobo Racing, Ridge Racer Type 4, and more Final Fantasy. And Final Fantasy. Glad I made the switch to Playstation, never regretted it even though it was an expensive purchase for me.
i remember buying the Original PlayStation SCPH-7501 from Toys R Us in 1998. and i played a lot of games on the ps1 like Spyro The Dragon, Crash Bandicoot Warped, Mortal Kombat 4 and A Bugs Life. i have a lot of fond nostalgic memories .i just want you to know that i am a big fan of your great channel. anyway happy 30th Anniversary PlayStation.😁😁😁😁😁😰😰😰😰
great Ps1 memories..having my first own place and playing it with buddies..Tekken and MOH definitely. Found out somehow that it was modded so used to go to a guys house 5 mins away for any game i wanted..cheap cheap. he tried to make covers etc fun simple times for sure John oh and Dino Crisis definitely we loved it! also Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer.
I used to be really hooked on the Colony Wars series on ps1. It was honestly the closest to something like the PC X-Wing and Tie Fighter games that I played on the system. I still think that to this day, they had the best radar system for 3d space combat games, I'm really surprised that other similar titles have yet to adopt it.
For me, it was tony hawk pro skater 1. I played the demo disc and fell in love. There was nothing like it at the time. My buddy and I bought it after about a month of playing the demo, because we were broke. Superman was the only track that was on the demo disc. Great times.
Wun tew tree fore! John Hancock the second grade teacher is back talking about games! The original PlayStation defined my high school years! I got it that summer before my freshman year in high school and one of the first games I bought for it was Megaman 8!
grew up with PS1 - my favs were: Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal 2, FF7, Ghost in the Shell, Final Doom, Tekken 3, Project Overkill, Gex, Castlevania SOTN, Loaded and Alundra to name a few..
I saw an ad for Hercules for PS1 in a kids magazine when I was a kid and begged my mom until she got it for me. Usually worked within 48 hours of first whine.
Its interesting since my top games like FF7 and Silent Hill, might not be the games I've played the most. Since I probably put the most time into the SmackDown wrestling game, and possibly Tekken 3, as they were both great for multiplayer action!
I remembered the PS1 and Saturn came out while I was in high school. It was like $600 for each of the console something that I could not afford at the time. I got the PS1 in 99 because one of my co-workers was raving about how such a deal for $100 and I brought him an in-n-out burger so he would solder in the mod chip in it for me. One of the thing that got the PS1 so popular was using CD format and the ability to mod it either using the solder chip or the Parallel Action Replay.
FFVII great game to end on , I still think PS1 and PS2 are still the best playstation consoles to date but that's just my own preference. Great video John 👍.
my best friend and I used to play the early PS1 games while listening to Alanis Morrissette’s album Jagged Little Pill so for me I can’t have one without the other 😂😂
It is insane the PS1 has been out that long. My brother bought one when the dual shock controllers came out. I think it was the first console we ever got that wasn’t given to us by our parents. I played it some, but mostly just FFVII, FFVIII, GT and GT2. I played the SHIT out of those games, though. When my brother moved out, I went and bought my own PS1 from a second hand shop for $20, lol. I still have it. I’ve played through FFVII a couple times over the years…been a while, though. I need to dig it out and see if the console still works…and to see if any of my memory cards still have data on them…
For anyone who was avoiding emulating PSX or PS2 and was relying on original hardware or a PS3 with backcompat like I was, the Duckstation and PCSX2 emulators are getting a lot of updates lately and I find the experience pretty perfect now. Duckstation in particular I don't get the "I'm not playing this properly vibes" anymore and just enjoy the experience. With savestates of course because I'm not some sadistic purist...
About memory cards you had to be careful not to buy a counterfeit memory card, as these were prone to fail, original are very reliable, same with pirate discs these would often fail.
My list of the most played PS1 games: - Tekken 3 (played this for months with my friends sometimes til morning.) - Ace Combat 2 - Resident Evil 2 - Metal Gear Solid - Gran Turismo - Soul Edge - Persona - Silent Hill - Final Fantasy VII - King of Fighters '95 I would put Driver, Final Fantasy 8, Twisted Metal 2, Pandemonium and Tobal 2 below the Top10 list.
I didn't realize the PS1 was released in Japan in December 1994. It's crazy to me that the PS1 didn't launch in the US until Sept. '95, (9 months later). I doubt this would ever happen anymore with a plethora of information available to everyone at their finger tips, people wouldn't stand for it. Idk maybe it could, but I kind of doubt it. When I got my PS1 in '95, gaming in Japan was such a mystery to me. They seemed to be the better market as games always seemed to release earlier there than they did in the US. I am not sure if this is true or not but I always used to believe that the games released in Japan were more difficult too because Japanese players were more skilled than US players. It's so different now due to globalization of the market. Great video Mr. Hancock!
For me i played a varietity of games from ff9 to rockem sockem robots (which is a good game) and destruction derby. I cant rember all the games i had but i played alot of demo diacs. I used to get playstation magazeene.
Did not know you were an Eagles fan. Go Birds! Are you originally from Eastern PA? I grew up there but transplanted to Columbus, OH for the past 25 years.
IMO the PS1 is the best console I’ve ever played. To this day, I still play mine and it still gives me goosebumps when the system boots up. There was something magical about this system and I still revere the system as the greatest of all time!
we got one at christmas a psone best looking playstation still imho we chose it because it was affordable for my parents and because we could swap it with friends at school for there dreamcast. we already had an n64
Lunar 1-2, FF7, Reboot (loved the show), Gundam battle assault, persona 2, castlevania SOTNl. legend of legia and FF tactics (best FF game and I will die on that hill)
Final Fantasy VII was an awesome game and was the first game of its kind that I ever finished. Took me about five years to finish it. The only thing that happens after completing the game and watching the credits is this screen that reminds me of the starfield screensaver from earlier versions of windows. I ironically had kept that screen from final fantasy VII running for weeks before the transformer on the power pole outside down the road blew up with such a bang that it had sounded like a shotgun going off. Took the trailer park all of about a minute to gather around this pole as it provided power to about half the trailer park. Everyone watched as the power company came out to replace it in about an hour. Considering that the year was 2003 or 2004 I can’t recall exactly. There wasn’t smartphones to entertain us which is why the guy working on the pole had gathered a crowd. 😂😂😂
I remember one particular summer night in New York 1998. I had my bedroom window open with the breeze coming in. No distractions, just the whirling of the PS1 plus the atmospheric sounds of RE2. Good, simple times.
Twisted Metal 2 Warcraft 2 (I also worked on this game) Diablo (I also worked on this game) Wipeout XL Madden 97 Need for Speed Crash Bandicoot 1/2 Fighting Force Die Hard Poy Poy Thrill Kill (unreleased) WCW Mayhem (I also worked on this game) Driver Gran Turismo 1/2

I’m glad you enjoyed it!
We played Command & Conquer with an extended link cable on PSOne, as well as Worms and Track and Field. Such a great console.
Great list John, I think I would change only one or two games, Command & Conquer certainly would be included
I'm glad you enjoyed the list. Command & Conquer is a great choice for sure!
John - I love the entire WipeOut series. I play all 3 PS1 WipeOut games regularly!
Good video! I remember getting my PS1 system around 1995! Fun system! Some really great games for it too!
Solid list, I'd add Alundra, RC De Go, Einhander, SOTN, Colony Wars and Blood Omen.
AWESOME list. Colony wars, SOTN & Blood Omen 😎
I had quite a few of these games. Great stuff, John. Thanks for the video!
I'm happy to bring back some classic memories.
I remember my big brother coming home with a ps1. Blew my mind. Remember on the demo disk with the 3D T Rex
A bunch of games I remember seeing for the first time on Playstation, I remember starting up CoolBoarders and soon as it was all loaded taking the game out and putting a CD in in the Playstation listening to it while i played was amazing to me.
Nice as always John! I didn't have so much experience regarding PS1 consoles and games. So thank you for this kind of video. It's very useful! Hugs!

FF7. Plenty of others got hundreds of hours but FF7 was the game I would just hunker down and work through every aspect of it.

My list of the most played PS1 games:
- Tekken 3 (played this for months with my friends sometimes til morning.)
- Ace Combat 2
- Resident Evil 2
- Metal Gear Solid
- Gran Turismo
- Soul Edge
- Persona
- Silent Hill
- Final Fantasy VII
- King of Fighters '95
I would put Driver, Final Fantasy 8, Twisted Metal 2, Pandemonium and Tobal 2 below the Top10 list.
Unlocking Minion and Suburbia on Twisted Metal 2 was 🔥 but driver was so hard to get out of the parking garage thou 😦
Demo discs were the best! Played crash bandicoot & jet moto demo over & over.
I'd probably have a completely different top 10 but that just goes to show how deep the PS1 library is.
Still have my original one,, and play it all the time,,,,
Syphon Filter 1-2 Tenchu RE directors cut Twisted Metal 1 and Spyro the Dragon were my favorites
I looked up Darkstone and HOLYSHIT!, "January 2001" talk about a late gen release😅
I thought I was the only person who played Dark Stone. Got it for my 12th birthday and still have my original copy.
All awesome. I was a paul fan too. Awesome vid. Anyone remember C12 ?

When I got my PS1 in '95, gaming in Japan was such a mystery to me. They seemed to be the better market as games always seemed to release earlier there than they did in the US. I am not sure if this is true or not but I always used to believe that the games released in Japan were more difficult too because Japanese players were more skilled than US players. It's so different now due to globalization of the market. Great video Mr. Hancock!
Twisted Metal 2 was the whole reason I bought a PlayStation.

Watched a game on TV in 1990. Was a fan ever since. Go Birds!
U should do one on N20! Underrated game that also played as a CD for the Crystal Method Vegas album

Had a great demo disc with that, Einhander, Tomba, Jersey Devil.
Great games 👍
Thanks for the visit
Syphon filter 2!!!
My personal top three for the PS1 would probably be crash team racing, colony wars and road rash jailbreak
Even today I buy half of the games used.
I was into FF7 along with RE2, BOF3, Xenogears and Saga Frontier
Go Birds!!!
I remember one particular summer night in New York 1998. I had my bedroom window open with the breeze coming in. No distractions, just the whirling of the PS1 plus the atmospheric sounds of RE2. Good, simple times.
Things were calmer in those days certainly!
Remember gettin the ps1 with tekken 2 ❤
Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal 1 & 2, Jet Moto, Resident 1 - 3, I played the ever loving crap out of these games.
