This video single handedly made me unsub. I’m an IOS user, a creative content designer and educator at the tertiary level but hearing you speak about the iPhone and about “4 lenses” to choose from etc. says alot about you and this channel and put you in a bracket with many other RUclipsrs that are not credible for education resources.
The biggest limitation for phone footage for me is the lack of subject separation and ability to control depth of field without using those horrendous fake bokeh modes. The wide log footage on the iPhone looks great however. Very impressed.
You are getting 13mm f/10, 24mm f/6.3 and 77mm f/24 (120mm f/21 on the Max) fixed aperture equivalents to full frame. The fixed aperture alone is pretty limiting, but also when was the last time you were filming something and though hmm, I wish I had a 120mm f/21 lens? 😂 - the main camera which looks closer to 28mm is not too bad at f/6.3 - that's f/4 APS-C territory, pretty sweet for a phone camera, but the rest I don't find that great in most situations.
The only thing holding me back from using an iPhone as a secondary camera is that the selfie-cam is usually a bit bollocks (though does look better on this one than on my 12 Mini), which makes it a right pain for vlogging. When they finally upgrade that camera I'll definitely be upgrading mine and using it more. Especially now with USB-C you can finally get the video files off sometime within our lifetimes 😐
If you buy all the bits and get large storage version, filters etc you get closer to the price mind you. Its impressive and in a few more generations things will start to level out. Still wish it had ridiculous dynamic range at 1080P instead.
Less dynamic range, especially on the face, and less background blur are the major giveaways for the iPhone. There is only so much you can achieve with a tiny sensor.
you kept switching back and forth between the lumix and iphone when cutting from the studio to the scenery and i had 0 clue you were doing it unless i looked at the text saying which one it was. that’s insane!
Very cool Sam! Currently using the iPhone 11 Pro Max so yes, the 15 will be a step up for sure. I use the 11 for some videos that I post to the channel so this will be a much welcomed upgrade!
Darn! Just when I’d pretty well convinced myself to get the S5ii. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and it does take great video for sure. But I’d mostly convinced myself that a full frame camera must provide a more ‘realistic image’ in several ways. The most obvious thing is the foreground separation from background using wide f-stops. Then I would think the larger sensor should provide more detail especially when viewed on large screens but maybe this isn’t the case. However I have watched a number of gorgeous videos with the S5ii and I’m not sure they would have looked so good on a phone. I am curious to hear whether you think working with such a camera still has major advantages? I realize that long telephoto work can only be done well with real cameras but what about for other everyday type filming?
Hey man.. nice video as always.. black magic camera app already allows to film on 4k 60 fps log internal.. using h265 instead of prores.. would love a comparison editing.. if prores codec makes difference on the color grading.. I ask because 4k 60 internal os a must for me.. specially since iphone 15 pro USB-c cant power an external mic and SSD without a powered hub (its a big flaw)...
informative comparison video Sam, Iphone 4K is more accessible than the Lumix S5 mk X but would love use Panasonic Lumix cameras more informative content.
I noticed you have a Sandisk Extreme Pro SSD. How did you get it to work with the iPhone? I had to go out and buy a new SSD as the Extreme Pro drew more than the 5 watts that the iPhone USB provided.
S5M2 with two lenses 20-60 and 50mm prime was about the same price on the December sale as Iphone pro max 15. But on an iphone only the main sensor is kind of decent, the rest are trash including the selfie. But the marketing works on people who are unaware, "Oh its got 4 cameras!", never mind that only one is usable. I wish phone manufacturers stop including these other lenses and just concentrate on the main camera
Super review as always Sam. I have to shoot quite a few before/after videos for my home improvement clients, as installers are far too busy and you have to work fast. They don't have the patience to wait around for lens changes and fiddly gimbal rebalancing. Smartphone videography with the Polar Pro VND looks the way forward for this type of filming and the iPhone 15 Pro (not the Max) with ProRes may be a suitable alternative to lugging around my 6K Pro or ZV-E10. Looks like I'm off to Currys!
Your jacket is awesome. Still a pretty good look from the footage you got on a phone! Oooh the hoosiers! Great band! (Now I’ve just got goodbye mr a stuck in my head) It’s a great little sausage for sure Great video mate
@@Tegneaufreak Its about spotting the differences, I know. These videos are made all the time when a new phone come out, and it always is the same point.
There's still quite a bit of crunchyness and mushyness in the iPhone image, although it's a huge improvement. I think the A7sIII would be a better match.
@sam Holland thx for the video. I'm trying to figure what stabi mode in the s5ii for what usecase... What do you use for static shots, what do you use for walking and how does focal length influence your decision? thx :)
Sausage .... what is it with you and food Smooth as Pie - Little Sausage - Log footage in the right lighting looks good how come you made Willy carry your bag it was like your own butler !
There’s a Sony something that came out recently but I honestly don’t look that much into phone cameras. Might be worth checking out. Thanks for watching 🤩🙏🏻📱🎥
Yes bro... You can certainly use it for a job if the job requires the benefits of the iPhone over a bigger camera setup. If we switch our minds to thinking of ourselves as solution providers vs just "quality snobs" the world becomes our oyster and its becomes less about the gear and more about how can I use my thinking brain to solve this clients problem. I'm telling you, you can still charge $5000 shooting with just your phone. Think of the return of investment your solution brings to the client, not the "quality" of your footage. If you have a product that can 2times a client's revenue by just shooting iPhone why would they care what you use when you are literally able to make them more money. You just gotta know how to be confident and pitch your facts.
The Samsung S23 Ultra has a more comparable camera. But, the iPhone 15 has come a long way. As you noticed, the portability comes in exchange for the overall quality of the final video. In either case, the best camera is the one you have at the moment. Cellphones make very good wireless monitors for the S5IIX. : )
Xiaomi 13 pro has a Leica set of lenses a One inch sensor log video option included PLUS Xiaomi free Video Photo raw editing app.. Under a £grand .. Chinese phones give more for less
Dear Sam.... the problem with iphone video is moiree and artifacts.. that are no pro at all.. it's just a nightmare.. and of course night shots.. come on... makes us smarter not dumber... did you get paid from apple? well well .. it's seems.. even if you didn't. What do we all think to the new iPhone 15??? 📱
Overpriced ngl
Traaaaaaash😂
I thought Apple stopped making phones about 4 to 5 years back🤔🤔🤔🤔

Log will take so much space🙈
Finally pulled the trigger on the s5iix yesterday. Your videos were a big part in helping me make the decision so thank you!
i have the lumix s5 2 and i love your channel because you're one of the few who covers it regularly!
Thank you! 🤩🙏🏻🎥 I hope you’re enjoying the camera!!! Great to have you here.
I just got my 15 pro max and I’m super excited at using it as a B cam to mix with my S5ii videos
THE ACCENT AND THE VOICE .. SHEEHSS So realxing to watch
Perfect timing for this video! I was searching something like this 🎉
So glad i chose THIS iteration to switch to a foldable after 10 years on iphone 💀💀💀💀😅
Noticed the difference right away. The 15 Pro looks great, but smartphones will never get to the level of dedicated cameras.
The S5 II just blows it away, but it is impressive how much quality they can get out of such a tiny sensor... especially for RUclips video
🤣not gonna lie to me it looks the same
Honestly, this piece of sausage looks unbelievably good. Almost scary.

for the flippy screen, it would be cool if they could send the viewfinder to your apple watch

Pair it with a decent x2 tele lens, and you got nice bokeh.

@3:56 cant you shoot in 24fps also to help? Iphone allows framerate changes in the camera settings
I used to shoot video with a Samsung Galaxy S22, but now I prefer to stick with the S5MK2. It's a bit better...😀
You may want to reconsider revising this review... A lot has evolved, and as with anything fresh, there's a learning curve involved.

...and the Lumix can't make phone calls! I actually preferred a lot of the iPhone's footage you showed!
Great channel! Great content!
Thank you my friend 🤩🙏🏻🎥
I already have the iPhone 14 Pro and it's literally only a year old but now I want the 15 :(((
I did think about you when they announced ProRes LOG 😬📱🎥
Already have ProRes on the 14 Pro! Just no log , and that’s HUGE! Also, no SSD support :(
Sorry yeh log
Oh, why you didn't go for the max with tele lens?
Too big for the pocket

Yeh but you’ll need a VND filter to compensate for the brightness 👌🏻🎥
