My iPhone 15 Pro is on its way. From what I've seen from the iPhone 15 Pro with ProRes Log, I think the iPhone can be used as a b-cam for wide shots where depth of field isn't an issue. Plus, the fact that sharpening is not a factor with ProRes Log. I'm looking forward to see what I can do with it. I think it will be a viable filmmaking tool. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Check out my test footage here: ruclips.net/video/Lf8EkEFawh0/видео.html It can absolutely be used as a b-cam in the scenario you describe. Nobody would ever know!
Upgrading from a 12pro to the 15pro today with the hope that everything you're saying here and that I've been thinking is true and allows me to work with the iPhone exclusively on some projects. When I'm traveling and walking around all day making work is a literal pain. My main reasons for the upgrade are having less weight on my back and more freedom overall. Well spoken video. Cheers.
iphone needs a "pro/manual mode" which could be activated in camera settings, full exposure control. this way the camera default would act as normal but for creative "pro workflow" users it would just to enable the setting and everything would work as any other pro photo or cinema camera.
Exactly. Unfortunately I’m not sure if they’ll ever give that to us. But luckily the BlackMagic camera app offers all of this functionality and so far it’s been great!
I’ve now shot a good bit of ProRes Log on the 15 Max. If you know how to work it in post, it is amazing. Mobile video has NO business looking that good. 👌
One of the best post regarding Iphone filmmaking! Lots of info here... hope you don't mind, but a I have a few questions... 1- why is the LOG of filmic Pro difficult to work with in post...? (it breaks during color correction...?) 2- The "natural" profile of filmic Pro.. is the only one that allows access to manual exposure...? & 3-Not being able to to turn off "tone mapping" it is a an issue within Filmic pro...? and if so wouldn't the fact that you can use ND's help...? (because you mentioned that it makes it difficult when using ND's...) Sorry about all these questions... but I find it really fascinating that you are the only one that dissected all these important point when using an Iphone for filming...! 👏 Thank you! :) cheers!
I’m guessing this video was created before the 9/15 Blackmagic Design event where they announced their iPhone app, which is amazing and at no charge. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do with it. Great video by the way, I’ll keep some notes about using the 14 Pro.
On the Blackmagic camera app you can also shoot 60 fps 4K ProRes log INTERNALLY. Assuming you have enough capacity of course 😅 But can also shoot in smaller size ProRes such as LT, or even h.265, all internal and all at 4K 60fp log. Pretty great that Apple didn’t block this! (Yet)
Thanks Chaz! Appreciate it. Stoked for the BlackMagic Camera app. Couldn't have been better timing. As long as it supports Apple Log and external SSD's, I'm all in over Filmic Pro. The UI looks great too.
The log footage is definitely a game changer however the native camera app does not allow you to shoot pro. They need to allow the ability to shoot prores log AND lock shutter speeds/iso so that we can shoot with a 180 degree shutter angle.
BlackMagic Camera app gives you this ability and it’s free. I’ve been enjoying it so far. Has a few bugs but I’m sure they’ll be smoothed out. The biggest challenge of shooting at 180 degree shutter though is that you almost always need some sort of ND, since you can’t control aperture on the iPhone. That’s why I don’t think Apple will give us full manual exposure controls for ProRes Log.
Wow, that's for sure a very intersting video , thanks for havi,g given us the opportunity to think and watch. May I ask you what is the wood handle that looks so practical on the moment "cage". it seems that only one is necessary that make things lighter and easier to handle. Thanks for your attention. Warm hello from Parma.
Thanks so much, for the answer. I've been on their website but can't figure out which ione i is exactly. Unless if the handle is coupled with the horizontal piece connected to you moment ..A description of your setup would be extremely usefull for your followers. Thanks a lot@@EvanSchneider
Have y’all tried Gaming fans for the iPhone? Y’all will need a different mic because when gaming I need my headphones because my teammates hate the sound of a plane when I use my phone mic 😂 but for y’all if you can find I way to record without the fan sound trust me the gaming fan will keep y’all phone cold no overheating.
So much of this went right over my head but i kept watching cos your voice was so calming and the way the video was put together was just mint. Awesome effort!
Really loved this video, very well thought out and presented, is there anywhere where we can see the short film you helped shoot, looks amazing based off the footage in this video.
Looks really nice! As long as they'll support ProRes in Apple Log and maybe even the SSD recording, I'm hoping it will be my go-to. Especially with its integration into Resolve. The UI looks much nicer than Filmic Pro in my opinion.
I have a friend who is fully into video biz has R6 and Z9 camera some expensive lens when he has some customer that complains that he charges too much for a video my budddy say" if you cant pay a profesional service with top notch gear then look for a cheap iphone video maker.
As creator of one of the most viewed videos on Blackmagic's Camera app for IOS, could you do a video explaining how to focus a video shot in log format? From what I have been able to tell the focus assist tools/lines don't work in log mode even when the display lut option is on. Just by looking at the screen while filming in log mode it's really hard to tell what parts of the scene are in focus. I generally shoot with the 24mm iPhone 15 main lens.
I mostly use autofocus when using the BM Camera app. I'd recommend loading in a viewing LUT so that you're looking at a display referred image while recording. The app gives you the option to either preview the LUT or burn it in, make sure you're only previewing it. My Apple Log LUTs work perfectly inside the app for previewing and will ensure a proper exposure as they are calibrated to match the middle grey encoding of Apple Log to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4.

Wow this was a really fantastic overview of what actually trying to shoot an entire short film on iPhone looks like in the real world! Thanks for that. The overheating in hot weather is a real issue I hope some team of engineers can figure out a way out of in the coming years; I understand it’s the natural processes and limitations of thermodynamics at the current moment, but perhaps we’ll discover a new method of effective heat dissipation or CPU’s will become so efficient, there will be a negligible amount of lost energy of heat. Regardless, you did a fantastic job explaining the ins and outs and I think I do want a 15 Pro if for nothing else the ability to jump up to 60fps and try out these new ‘Spatial Videos’!
I’ve been praying since the release of the 14 to see someone make a short film but the only people who did have been apple themselves.. no creator made any short film.. at least that I’ve found. On this video I see you shooting on the 14 but I don’t see that video on your channel. Hopefully with the 15 you’ll make even a 2 minute short film because the 15 is amazing
Right now the short film we shot on the 14 Pro is going through festival submissions, we will probably release the full film online sometime soon and I’ll be updating my subscribers when we do. And definitely want to shoot a short on the 15 Pro.
Hi Evan, I don't know if you have one ... but what would be really nice is a video that shows all the different rigs, and equipment set-ups you used for filming with the iPhone in this video together with the links. Thanks
Great video. Just upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro and wondered what was the slider and pistol grip you were using at 2:05 and who makes it? Thanks for all of the great tips!
I haven’t tested this yet. But I’ve seen promising things from other people plugging in usb-c hubs and everything works. So hopefully this will be possible!

Pro Max this time!
And the really great thing about the iPhone is, you can even make phone calls 😊

Great idea. After we finished the short film, we realized we could have just rubber banded an ice pack to the back of the phone too haha
That's why you shoot on an advanced flagship android.
Unfortunately while the cameras may be good on flagship Androids, the recording codecs and color encoding profiles are not.
Apple is misleading about the cameras on 15 pro. and this sound like a paid cormercial
I think they've done an incredible job on this one. And no, this was in no way sponsored and I have no relationship with Apple.
Stating opinions without making a point brings us nowhere. Where did Apple mislead us and why assuming this is like a commercial ?
"Filmmakers" and "iPhone" should not be used in the same sentence
That’s your opinion, but some of us filmmakers enjoy pushing the boundaries and seeing how far we can get.
Two Words: SHOOT... ANDROID... 😮
One word: ProRes
About F-ing time Apple stepped up and supported external drives in a meaningful way.
