  • When Yars Rising was announced by Atari and WayForward, the response from some was confusion and, from some quarters, disgust. But having spent some time with the game thanks to its Steam Next Fest demo, I'm now well up for what this game has to offer; it looks set to be another wonderful WayForward exploration platformer, this time paying homage to numerous Atari properties -- not just Howard Scott Warshaw's classic Yars' Revenge -- along the way.
Yars Rising is set for release on September 10, 2024.

That looks like an interesting evolution of the property... and also explains why I couldn't kill the baddie in Yars Revenge as I didn't know about launching the Qotile!

I'm skeptical but I will give it a shot. Personally, if Atari wants to do something more involved than just remaking/updating their classic games, I think it would be fun if they could do something with the old Atari Force comics DC published, although the rights there are probably complicated.

i just don't know what to think about this, it looks interesting, but i don't get Yar vibes. If the main figure was like in the comic books, i would like it a lot more

I think we all need to wait and see. Everything suggests that later in the game, we'll have some "old-school Yars" plot revelations.

This actually looks interesting, and I will likely pick it up since it is relatively inexpensive and YR was my favorite 2600 game.
It’s easier and more cost effective to animate 3-D models than sprites, which is why more studios are moving to 2 1/2-D over 2-D.
I’m guessing that you’ve heard about the expansion of Atari 50. I’m personally looking forward to the “deep dive” they’re supposed to be doing into Berzerk.

Yes! Looking forward to that. Atari 50 was already excellent, but I'm looking forward to seeing more.

To tell you the truth, I hadn't really heard of the IP despite watching you fairly regularly as well as dedicated shump channels (which almost always focused on arcade games from the 90s onwards).
For that reason, it just looked like Wayforward getting their groove back on with an old IP - given that they made some bad 3D games recently and also messed up with the RWBY IP, I'll take something good.
That said, I'd prefer even for cases like this if they could find a way to have both the original IP of shooters continue as well as this 2D exploration platformer. Mario has kept 2D and 3D platformers, RPGs, sports and even had variety in each.
Sustaining 2 styles isn't easy but can appease people.

Original Yars is still live and kicking! There's been a standalone "Yars Recharged" game by Atari, and Digital Eclipse did a great take on it as part of Atari 50, where the original 2600 code was running underneath, but overlaid with fancy new visuals.

Hey ThisIsPete. There’s another Yarian game made by the man himself, Howard Scott Warshaw. Are yar ready for the new yars’ game?
