i cant express how confused i was when i found out the spongebob musical was going to be a thing... but it turned out to be really good, and im honestly really happy it wasnt just trying to be a money-grabbing, heartless, and unecessary musical. it was really heartfelt and i really do have to give the creator props for trying to create legitimate art.
Shrek the musical was technically the first professional show I was ever in. I was the deer who gets their antlers ripped off and one of the Dulocian puppets. I was ten. And I loved every minute of it.
I totally agree with you on the technical design of the show. I was BLOWN AWAY but the set and the costumes and the projection. If the musical succeeds in NYC, I see Tony noms in all the technical department.
Re: the projection tracking, Disneyland just started using something similar in their Frozen musical (they project around the actors and, when Anna turns to ice, on top of them). My understanding is they're tracking the actors/set realtime with the same motion capture tech you get from the Kinect.
Speaking of "money-grabbing," I'm really interested in how Monopoly the Musical is going to adapt a board game that most people get tired of before finishing into a show that people will want to watch all the way through. I felt so weird reading Hasbro's "bio." Who knows? Maybe we'll see a musical from Walmart or Proctor & Gamble or NASA.
But actually, that would be awesome! I was kinda unsatisfied with how the film version of The Martian turned out. I can see it being hilarious as a musical. Or maybe a show about a more serious NASA event. With how good Come From Away is, that might be really cool.
I mean, "Walmartopia" the musical was a thing if you want to count that. Doubt it was something that had or needed any sort of authorization from the company, but it exists
Thats how I feel about Spongebob and Pokemon the musical, because you're trying to turn single and sometimes two part episodes that have very little to do with each other, other than the characters and places, so its very odd to turn it into a cohesive script and songs with characters that will be very difficult to sing in the voices chosen for the characters, the costumes would also be very difficult to dance and design to make it seem "realistic"
I actually really enjoyed it. (I did see it a bit later than it's opening week) I was shocked by how well the music flowed. though I agree it is hard to go ask the artist every night how the song went and how to change it
Anthony Rosenthal ya. I'm personally very excited for this though! It seems like they put a lot of work into this, but you're right and he's right too.
I personally enjoyed Shrek the Musical, but I understand where you were coming from when you were talking about it in this video... it was pretty much a verbatim reproduction of the movie.
+ATWS Luke yeah Farquaard was amazing and personally I absolutely love Brian in it, and some of the songs are pretty good, 'When Fords Fail' and 'Who I'd Be' come to mind, but those work pretty much as standalone pieces ....
+Gabriela Rodriguez I agree, but they aren't stand alone pieces, even though they work like that, each one of those songs in that show, in my opinion, are good songs, the problem shrek, is that it isn't too complex, but I think the music and acting is pretty good
I understand the inclination to give a pass to media made with children in mind to say "well it's for kids it doesn't have to be great" but highly disagree with this sentiment. The wealth of well crafted, well thought out, and quality children's media that exists shows me that kids media doesn't have to be bad. Making excuses for things that aren't good because they are meant for kids to me seems like cop-out and a disservice to kids. I just don't think any sort of laziness in production should be looked over just because kids may like it when they are kids.
I love how when they finally came to broadway they were able to really bring it together and flow after the beautiful but slightly choppy Chicago production. Props to the cast and crew who's efforts continue to blow my mind every time I think about the show.
I mean I know there's alot of _why_ Like people are complaining in the comments "oh it's just a cash grab, it's terrible, blah blah blah" Fight me I loved the SpongeBob the musical The songs are absolute bops Like it's seriously well made Also the mcfucking stage man It's so well made Even if we didn't need it, it was still absolutely spectacular #SpongebobForTheTonys
I do have to say I agree with you on the demographic appeal. I wish there were more hidden "adult" jokes for those who grew up on it. Hell, I remember when it premiered. A lot of my friends were excited to see it and overall I'm not disappointed. I do think it needs a few tweaks.
Your unbridled enthusiasm about figuring out the projections is freeking awesome and adorable. It made this (in a past life) theatre tech major extremely happy.
As an adult, I think that it was very well made and fun to watch, but it is definitely more directed to the children, and that's not particularly a bad thing in any sense. For one, Spongebob has always had a bigger appeal towards children, and for two, it's always nice to have a musical that makes children have a smile on their face instead of just television or phones. I would call this a "feel good" musical because I think their main objective was not to be taken too seriously.
I'm surprised by even the thought of a musical based off a board game (anyone heard of Clue the Musical?). But, in further research, I found out that The Araca Group - a theatrical merchandise and production company - is not only partnering with Hasbro to create Monopoly the Musical, it is also co-producing The SpongeBob Musical. Interesting.
Having multiple songwriters contributing to the score of a musical and it not actually being a jukebox musical doesn't seem to be a particularly successful strategy as far as making solid musicals goes. I can only think of *Working*, but that score apparently lacked cohesion and the story wasn't cohesive, either.
Just saw this in Chicago it is beautiful and the cast is perfect. Reminds me of when they tried Seussical. So I get your comments.....should be a NYC success and sure to wind up in high school spring musical line ups. Choreography and music was awesome! Great way to get kids to experience musical theater
*WHEN SHARKS FLY: A SHARKSTORM MUSICAL* Okay, this has been a long time coming, for me, but if I sent you a copy, could you PLEASE critique Sharknado! the Musical? It's been my pet project for years, and I've been told it has real potential, maybe for some odd community theatres. PLEASE would you review it so I can make it better?
Caitlin Karcher It's coming VERY soon! Keep your ear to the ground, metaphorically speaking, but it couldn't hurt to do take it, literally; the people downstairs are having a very interesting conversation.
Enjoyed this review, it seemed genuine and fair. I'm excited to see the show when it hopefully comes to Broadway -- and hopefully it'll come in a bit of a reworked fashion, but I'll probably enjoy it either way.
I was lucky enough to see this front row today. I loved it! Great cast, great music, BEAUTIFUL scenery. The girl who plays Pearl needs her own song because her voice blew me away!
I completely understand where you are coming from. Although, I listened to the music and watched the show, really expecting to hate this show, but I very much enjoyed it. It's not a show that makes you think, it's definitely not a Sondheim show, but I really believe it wasn't a bad show.
Tina Landau said in interviews that ‘everything is great but it goes on for too long’ so they chipped and changed small bits to cut it down and make it slicker I adore this show so much
Thank you for uploading this. I've been so curious about how this show would turn out. I loved the quote about how it's a soapbox musical using original songs!
I was in my thirties when the first season of SpongeBob aired on TV, and I've never had cable at home. But I got to see the televised stage production over The Holidays-, It intrigued me enough to seek out some of the source material later, and find out who created it and how ('cause that's just the sort of nerd I am). So it worked on that level. As someone with zero emotional attachment to the characters or their world. I really, *really* liked about 85% of it. The other 15%, it felt like the story was pulling back to keep the emotional tone at the same level as the TV show. I find myself wondering how different it would be if the series had ended after its third season, the way Hillenburg had wanted, and the primary audience would therefore have been the adults who watched the show 20 years ago, instead of kids who are watching it, today (and still having a happy ending, of course).
I will probably always regret never seeing this. I tried to get tickets before it closed, but sadly it didn’t work out. But I am still obsessed with the soundtrack.
Not entirely certain about the projection tech you're talking at the end, but the new Frozen show at Disneyland uses LED diodes to track and project on props and an actress(!!!) live during each show. Pretty nifty stuff.
I saw it this past weekend and my guess to how they did the projections moving like that was paint that only glows under black light. We used it for a show I was in once and it was VERY effective. Just a guess I have no idea.
This is my favorite musical. If I were in a production of this, I would be satisfied. I’d have peaked, and quit theater forever. I think all the little plots replicate the feel of watching a cartoon.
Because you briefly mentioned Spider-Man Turn off the Dark, I'm curious as to whether you've read the tell-all book from one of the shows writers about it? It's actually incredibly interesting.
Pretty sure the projection technique was video mapping, there's loads of stuff on youtube about it. It is pretty awesome stuff, especially seen live. Check out Freelusion's dances using it, they are spectacular. I knew Spongebob was becoming a musical, I didn't realise it was happening so soon though. Interesting thoughts on it, I'm glad you take the time to consider it as more than a money-grabbing scheme.
I'm sure they used projection mapping, but I'm almost certain they used a version of the technology called Lumipen which tracks a moving object with extreme precision. It makes whatever illusion you're trying to create seem very present and organic. I'm currently taking a class on projection mapping and I find it really amazing. I'd love to see what they've done in this show. Here's a video on that process if you'd like to check it out. ruclips.net/video/p7IL0Gvux7U/видео.html
In disneys california adventure park they have Frozen: live at the Hyperion and they use a tracking system for props and characters! i am assuming that's what they did for spongebob because it is pretty much flawless in the frozen show. they have tiny trackers on the characters and props so when the projections need to hit them or be near them they can just be placed there automatically! i would recommend it on youtube because the effects in the show are really spectacular :)
Answer to projection mapping question. -- This is the way it is done. ruclips.net/video/p7IL0Gvux7U/видео.html -- Cirque du Soleil seems to achieve a similar effect with their tree. The tree is a grey "screen" that they project on. At certain points, it opens and the projections match the motion. ruclips.net/video/R9D5nvZ-jxA/видео.htmlm34s The next clip betrays the grey screen element because of the spotlights on the climbers. ruclips.net/video/R9D5nvZ-jxA/видео.htmlm59s
Honestly I kind of liked the music as it gave every different character a different feel and we didn’t get the same boring motifs the whole way threw it. I feel like they wanted many good, different songs and that’s why they didn’t just stick to a few composers. Also gives parents a bit of relief I think who are bringing their kids! Great review!
I personally feel like if they work on the show that they could get kids more into theater. Which in modern times really needs to happen. I myself can’t get my little siblings into musicals that I know kids would love. If I told them about this musical that has characters that they have been growing up with that they would LOVE it. It’s a show that should be worked on for the people, not the fame
Me too! The songs are fun and singable for average people. The changes they made to the story for the stage were good, and I loved that they fleshed out the characters a lot more than the original movie.
So I finally listened to the cast album for this musical and... I FUCKING LOVE IT. Like, I totally expected it to suck, but I ended up really loving the variety of musical styles. Like, I don't really care about the story, but the music is SO FUN to listen to. It just makes me really happy
Very solid review! I'm hoping it does make it to Broadway; I would definitely try to make a trip to NY to see it (after Hamilton though....if I had to drop money on only one show....)
What I find ironic about 9:40 is that, from the experience of being in the SB Broadway fandom, spongebob is the new Hamilton, with the director and lead actors seen as a literal gods. Of course I cant deny that there were problems, but I think that its much better on broadway (maybe the hype was kinda in the way for me but)
Saw it on Saturday night!! I know that for many of the projections, there was a monitor in the balcony for the actors to see what was going on onstage (for example, the swinging clock). Idk if that helps... haha. Any idea how they got the shadows projected upside down, though?? It's been boggling my mind:) super cool!
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING ABOUT THE SHADOWS The only thing I could think of was if the light was reflecting off of the floor, but I couldn't tell because I couldn't see the floor from my seat
I saw it and I totally agree with the plot issue. The plot was super weak and there were too many subplots. Spongebob himself didn't interact with the main cast for a whole act! There was a lack of character interaction and plots tying into each other. Everyone was sort of doing their own solo thing so there was little characters bouncing off of each other. I still love it though.
Ok so i saw the bottom of the description so.. 1 Once there was an ugly barnacle who was so ugly that everyone died. the end 2 hehe its a giraffe 3 NO THIS IS PATRICK 4 So much later that the narrator got tired so we had to hire a new one... 5 B I G M E A T Y C L A W S
The question is why this needed to be done at all, let alone try it out to see what works... They should be embarrassed. Isn't The Little Mermaid stage musical bad enough? Shrek? I love Spongebob. THE CARTOON. They shouldn't have tried to stage this at all. It can't get better no matter what they do to it.
Shrek is actually very successful. I feel like this can make it. Spider-Man ran for 2 years on Broadway. Tarzan was a musical, but do you even know about that? I'm not going to judge until I see it.
cirquedukrabs97 i've been in school productions of shrek, tarzan, and little mermaid (in that order) and i found them to be lovely stories with some good songs but kind of just a replica of the movies
It is called "Video Mapping" my friend, threre are many artist that use that technology. I recommend you to watch "Spending All My Time - Perfume Cannes Performance" it will blow your brain out.
7:52 That's kind of true. Some shows can focus on a certain demographic while others can actually entertain multiple demographics. We've had films and video games in the past that were cartoony but were mostly aimed to adults *cough cough Conker's bad fur day and Fritz the Cat cough cough* yet some kids actually know what they are. I'm not saying I want a 18+ Spongebob musical, I'm just saying that I want a spongebob musical that has the look and feel of spongebob yet have a good amount of jokes to entertain the older demographic, like seasons 1-4 did, to appeal to multiple demographics. Sorry about my long comment and opinion, I just wanted it to get off my chest. :)
i cant express how confused i was when i found out the spongebob musical was going to be a thing...
but it turned out to be really good, and im honestly really happy it wasnt just trying to be a money-grabbing, heartless, and unecessary musical.
it was really heartfelt and i really do have to give the creator props for trying to create legitimate art.

I love this video because your opinions are exactly what I thought about Aladdin on Broadway.
Anthony Rosenthal ya. I'm personally very excited for this though! It seems like they put a lot of work into this, but you're right and he's right too.
Anthony Rosenthal Ok, Anthony I love you, but Aladdin Broadway is flipping amazing
This video is how I feel about all disney broadway musicals.
Anthony Rosenthal ikr side note: your preformance in falsettos was amazing and you are lucky to get a job at a young age,you are going places
Anthony Rosenthal I'm gonna see rent in February

I personally enjoyed Shrek the Musical, but I understand where you were coming from when you were talking about it in this video... it was pretty much a verbatim reproduction of the movie.
Except Lord Farquad, very different characters in film and on stage, Christopher Seiber owned the stage with his songs. The film didn't have that.
+ATWS Luke yeah Farquaard was amazing and personally I absolutely love Brian in it, and some of the songs are pretty good, 'When Fords Fail' and 'Who I'd Be' come to mind, but those work pretty much as standalone pieces ....

+ATWS Luke don't forget pinnochio
John Lithgow's Lord Farquaad from the movie is still the better Lord Farquaad.
I understand the inclination to give a pass to media made with children in mind to say "well it's for kids it doesn't have to be great" but highly disagree with this sentiment. I want to see it because of Panic! at the Disco

your last bit about the projection is EXACTLY what I want to know! I enjoyed the show but that part especially blew me away
you had it set to 'M' for musical
this show is the bomb and yall need to be more open to it,because it's amazing

Griffin Allen clue isn't just a board game. It's a movie. AND ITS AWESOME
Saw it on broadway, it was amazing! If the Chicago tryout wasn’t good, then they really stepped up their game. Lots of genuine fun. :D
it also did broaden its demographic to me, there were a lot of sly political jokes, “you can always trust the government!”
Having multiple songwriters contributing to the score of a musical and it not actually being a jukebox musical doesn't seem to be a particularly successful strategy as far as making solid musicals goes. I can only think of *Working*, but that score apparently lacked cohesion and the story wasn't cohesive, either.
Alright, most of Shrek the musical is boring as hell, and yet 'Who I'd Be' may be one of my favorite musical songs ever.

they should travel to different areas if they are gonna test it
My favorite Spongebob quote is "A one, a two, a skiddly diddly doo" yeah that's right I read the description that far
Great review!
by what ive seen im absolutely in love with this show
I personally feel like if they work on the show that they could get kids more into theater. Which in modern times really needs to happen. I myself can’t get my little siblings into musicals that I know kids would love. If I told them about this musical that has characters that they have been growing up with that they would LOVE it. It’s a show that should be worked on for the people, not the fame
saw it on broadway a year later and its so good now i loved it
Shrek was actually amazing.
It’s jus overdone and everyone hates it now
I saw Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark And as a huge fan of both Spider-Man and musical theatre, I was let down
i kinda loved the sherk the musical....
I dont think we needed it to be a musical but I still mcfucking love it. Sure, the songs could be improved but- they're still *bops*
What I find ironic about 9:40 is that, from the experience of being in the SB Broadway fandom, spongebob is the new Hamilton, with the director and lead actors seen as a literal gods. Of course I cant deny that there were problems, but I think that its much better on broadway (maybe the hype was kinda in the way for me but)
Are you going to see War Paint?
I had a scheduled audition for this musical, but unfortunately a family emergency kept me from going. I was going for Patrick.
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING ABOUT THE SHADOWS
The only thing I could think of was if the light was reflecting off of the floor, but I couldn't tell because I couldn't see the floor from my seat
Shrek was a weird musical I didn’t feel like it followed the movie exactly. It added to the story and some great songs. Sutton Foster was amazing.
I'd really like to see you do an update if you ever see the broadway version.
1 Once there was an ugly barnacle who was so ugly that everyone died. the end
2 hehe its a giraffe
3 NO THIS IS PATRICK
4 So much later that the narrator got tired so we had to hire a new one...
5 B I G M E A T Y C L A W S
I will bet on Mapping for the projection following a shape.
Why should they be embarrassed? It was a great show!
Maybe if you actually watch it you'll change your mind
It is called "Video Mapping" my friend, threre are many artist that use that technology. I recommend you to watch "Spending All My Time - Perfume Cannes Performance" it will blow your brain out.
I'm an adult and LOVE SpongeBob (old SpongeBob) but I hate it when Disney copies and pastes their movies onto the stage, so......
fast forward to 12 tony nominations
I miss this show. I miss it so much. Yes it closed a week ago. Yes I may be a little overdramatic. Yes I do want a revival right now.
I love wheel the musical with all my heart
What is your felling on the Barnum musical? not the greatest showman, I mean the Broadway musical called Barnum.
And it ended up being amazing
