    A striking point with the letter from Michelle: she was capable of writing the letter because of her high school educaton. The same education she denied her own children, especially her daughters, by homescholing them to the IBLP curiculum.
    Not saying all homescholing is bad, but this particular curriculum is not the most science based....

    • @neonradius
      @neonradius 7 месяцев назад +8

      100%. I know people who are homeschooled who turned out absolutely fine, smarter than me in some subjects and and not as smart in others (which let’s be honest, is true of public school as well). But there’s so so many kids who are homeschooled not because their family has valid critiques of public schooling, but because it makes them easier to manipulate and abuse. I honestly don’t know what a solution is, because I don’t think outright banning homeschooling is right, but how do we regulate it? It’s already hard enough spotting abuse in kids who go to public school, and oftentimes programs end up hurting kids more than helping them. What sorts of policies or oversights would have stopped the Duggars, or at least helped them? I’m honestly not sure, but your comment really does illustrate that even if we don’t know a solution, there *is* a problem. The fact that the one enabling/participating in the abuse has the literacy and wherewithal to defend her husband but the actual targets of his abuse either don’t or had to fight for their right to learn is horrible. I was only able to escape my abusive environment because I got into college on a scholarship, if I was homeschooled I would still be there.

      I can think of a few things to change, but I'm nog sure how my european solutions will be met in the USA: a national curriculum for minimal levels of education, federally tested every year till children turn 18. How they reach the goal is up to the educator, but homescholed children should be able to pass a GED at the finish.

    Okay, 2 things from Jills book that show him to be even more the villain. First they had a fight for years to even see the contract because TLC said that Jill didn’t have right to the contract that she signed because it was for Jim, Bob and Jim Bob didn’t want her to see the contract and be in this whole thing, they went like gray rock almost no contact, and Michelle had to come at like midnight, banging the hell out of their door, and then just left it there and ran away. Like they thought they were being robbed but it was Michelle sneaking them the contract after YEARS and them starting to use the court to force JimBob to give it to them.
    Second-Jim Bob committed tax fraud. We know he did it against Jill and my guess is if he was doing it for jail. He was doing it against of his kids. He had his attorney and tax guy doing all of his children’s taxes and on those taxes it was saying that he was paying Jill $80,000 a year so she got a bill from the US government stating that she owed taxes because she made too much money and the only reason they found it out is because of that bill and because Derek wasn’t getting approved for any financial aid, because they made too much money when they didn’t make any money. Then Jimbob told her he wasn’t committing fraud because he had paid for things when she was a child and young adult so he didn’t have to pay her, but he could put on taxes that he paid her.
    Imagine if he has been claiming to the US government that he has been giving every one of his adult children 80 K a year for years, think about how much back taxes that man would owe.

      I think it’s because he thought oh because I have IBP structure and you know all that he figured oh I show her she won’t know so I’ll just take care of it not thinking about as I got older than possibly start questioning, and it probably helps that Derek young gone to so that probably helped her to like piece things together and it’s sad. Once they became 18 they should’ve had the ability to choose that but because Jim Bob became greedy he didn’t care so he found ways to manipulate his kids essentially.

    I love your videos. I'm so glad I found them!
    I want to make a point about Jim Bob "comes up with a name and holds a funeral service for his nocturnal emissions" Duggar that I feel like a lot of people either miss entirely or don't make explicit in criticism of how he treated his family but especially his daughters: yes, he exploited all his children financially. But he also made the family's rules about purity and modesty such a focus of their public profile that the sexual "reality" of his daughters was a main selling point of the show and a HUGE focus of discourse around it. I didn't have access to cable when the shows aired, but I watched a lot of pirated episodes online years later, and I remember how the family and show were talked about online. I may be wrong about this, but I got the sense that the Duggar parents wanted their first born Joshy to be the "star" of the show (he narrated one of the first documentaries), but the producers of the show saw that a) Josh Duggar has always been an uncompelling human being with mediocre charisma and middling ability at best, and b) that the Duggar family's collection of beautiful, parentified, broken-spirited daughters was the shows obvious selling point. The snark subreddit wasn't called "Free Josh," it was called "free _Jinger_ ." Everyone had an opinion: could they really be happy? Were their lives going to work out okay? Did they want to court, or did they not have a choice? Where would they find decent guys to marry? How was this supposed to work? Is it gross to think about their wedding nights? Is anyone surprised that we're going to speculate, hard, about their wedding nights? Look at all the housework and childcare and cooking and sewing and first aid and organizing they can do!! I wonder how that's going to work out for them! Is this kind of substandard education child abuse? Is this education, in light of all the things they're able to do which secular teenagers can't, actually substandard? People were obsessed with the oldest Duggar girls. In particular there was a lot of sexualizing and sexualized interest (a lot of speculation about how their lifestyle was really working for them, some of the speculation was genuine concern or criticism, some of it was just a way to harp on the sexuality of teenaged girls in long skirts). Jim Bob knew this. He knew that everyone was thinking about Josh and Anna's wedding night (I realize Josh and Anna were legally adults, but letting the camera film them disappearing into the honeymoon suite in their wedding episode should be a fvcking crime.) Jill wouldn't let the show film or show her and her husband closing the hotel door the night after their wedding ceremony, and I think in addition to it being a private moment and she being a private person, she was also aware, on some level, that some of the show's viewers were a little too invested in her 'loss' of virginity, and she just... felt understandably uncomfortable about that. All this to say, Jim Bob exploited _all_ his kids and _every single one_ of his wife's pregnancies, but he also basically PIMPED his daughters to TLC. Speculation about JB's daughters' sexuality and safety drove the show's relevance, and Jim Bob only saw $$$, never once considering that this might not be why "G-d" "blessed" him w so many surviving girl children. The fact that off camera their physical safety from their own brother was never really addressed or considered really hammers home to me the point that the Duggar Dictator did not consider his daughters. Like at all. His religious organization taught him they were possessions, and as possessions, everything about them may as well work for him! How the he'll else could a guy who thinks he's an honest business man even _come up_ with that crime of a contract in the first place, let alone trick one of his own children into signing it?! I think the fact that his daughters were _women and girls_ before they were people really helped!
    If my dad had known or seen that putting me on TV or other media was attracting _that much_ sexual attention about me from the public when I was barely done w puberty, he'd have at the _very least_ sought ways to minimize the kind of coverage that encouraged viewing me through that lense, and probably have decided that this was no way to make money, and walked away. I don't _think_ my dad is unusually principled, I think he's just got fewer patriarchal brain worms than American fundie types, and thus sees his daughter as a human being as fully worthy of privacy and consideration and protection and self-determination as much as his son.
    When I try to explain "Patriarchy" to my middle school aged kids, I talk about looking at a social situation and asking, "is everyone in this situation considered a _real person_ ? If not, whose needs and rights come first?" I think when Jim Bob learned that his oldest son was doing crimes on his sisters and allegedly justified this behavior to his father as being "curious about girls," this made a perverse kind of sense to Jim Bob. After all, Josh wasn't doing anything _unnatural_ , like sexually abusing his brothers, what a relief! The "girls" in the Duggar household weren't valuable persons with rights or futures. In the infamous Megan Kelly interview with the parents, I can practically hear Jim Bob saying, in his head obviously, "I don't see why this is a big deal, he only did it to the _girls_ ." I believe his daughters' 2nd class status in his household and world view is _the_ explanation for what Josh did in the first place, and for every decision JB did to address the situation from the first he learned of it up to that interview, in which he strong armed his daughters into revealing their trauma and shame to the public in order to save their unrepentant scumbag brother while he cracked jokes in the same room just off camera as well as to protect their father's cash cow and reputation. That, in my opinion, is what Patriarchy looks like: letting your daughters get sexually abused, pimping the same daughters out to the public, and then fighting like hell in public opinion and in court to save your son from going to jail for CSAM and sexual assault! This should be obvious, but Jesus would never!

    I think it was a great way to phrase how they were radicalized into IBLP through trauma and their misguided advice/shame. It doesn't excuse where they went beyond into IBLP but it does give some insight into how they got on the path they're on.

    The Duggar's were a huge part of my life growing up. While my parents didn't belong to IBLP, they were fundamentalist Baptists and our upbringing was very similar to the guidelines of IBLP. We religiously (ha) tuned in to watch that stupid show every week. Even as a child I knew they were phony and fake. I distinctly remembered Pest's wedding episode and how cringy the song he sang to Anna was. Alas, my suspicions were right and when it came out that he was a predator, my mother defended him. She didn't want to admit that her precious Duggars were skeezy creeps who defended their pedo son. She justified this by saying "Well, he did what he did while his sisters were sleeping. It's not like they remembered it." Which wasn't even true and even if it were, it's insane to defend an actual child predator just because you don't want to look bad by associating with their religion.
    Her saying that was actually one of my final hints that the culture I grew up in was toxic and lead me to break away. The year after the scandals I moved out and went to college against their explicit will. They disowned me for it but it's fine by me. I only hope the same for all of the Duggar girls- that they can break away from the cult.

    That Aughties was certainly a weird time when it came to religious "mainstream" TV. You had a lot of shows about really really big religious families. There was 7th Heaven, 16/17/18 etc and Counting, that Polygamist reality show along with Big Love. Big Love actually held up pretty well to a rewatch because it was more critical of religious institutions and sexism but there was a very big fundamentalist cultural push back that somehow shared space with the ultra-sexualization going on with Playboy and sex tapes. The Bush twins were kind of a cultural mixing of the two- party girls whose religious dad was putting anti-choice judges into power. Though as was typical of the Naughties most of the focus was on the women for being 'sluts' and not so much the more important cultural forces at play

      Jim Bob and Michelle joined Bill Gothard's IBLP cult instead of a REAL church! They teach their members to let God decide FOR them how many kids they'll have, and they don't allow birth control of ANY kind! When Michelle's parents were alive, they worried about her health, and I'm sure Jim Bob's parents did, too! They kept asking: "Is this your last one?" Michelle had 1 miscarriage, 1 stillborn, and 4 cesarean sections, and I learned something about her having a hysterectomy, but I never found out whether that was true or not!

The youngest, Josie has only 3 more years left before turning 18, and it's possible that Jana won't do anything with her own life until then, because she feels she needs to protect her! Last summer, Jim Bob and Michelle were under fire for Josie wearing an "unsafe" swimsuit at the beach!
