You could make a part two. There’s more. The Childless millennial with a pretzel story. That girl deserved her pretzel AND the tshirts they made in her honor. Disney Dreamlight Valley. You can watch RUclips channels about it but it’s so fun if you like cozy games like that. Also I am a Disney adult but I’m not weird. I just grew up poor never getting to go like my best friends and only being invited once when I was like 17. So now I go because adult money. I’m not weird at all. My fiance and I carry our baby Yoda in our lounge fly like it’s a baby born with his own little Mickey Mouse hat ears and take picture with the princesses. Not weird AT ALL 👁️👄👁️
You forgot the ones who are so devoted to Disney, they move down to Orlando and go full Disney-mode 24/7 with their living conditions short of moving into the park.
😂I know this person 😅 she is always reminiscent of her time as a cast member then one day literally packed her family up and moved to Orlando so they could to Disney whenever.
Okay so this one blonde lady keeps coming up on my ig feed and she moved close to Disney to supposedly help with her mental health/depression and she just goes almost every day and walks around the parks with her kids
hey now, there’s a biiiiig difference between Defunctland and Disney fun fact content. the guy who runs Defunctland is producing whole ass documentaries these days, searching for creators who never got the recognition they deserved, discussing the concept of what makes something art. I usually don’t comment on things but I’ll ride for Kevin at Defunctland any day 😅😅
@@MJB-y7z I figured I was gonna get a reply like this lmao, but Defunctland has never been a Disney only channel. the video of his that hooked me was about Action Park, a theme park that caused multiple deaths and injuries that no longer exists
You’re missing a lot of nuance about working at the parks here and it’s coming off flippant to the struggles of CMs working there. No vast majority who have lived in their car or shitty dwellings aren’t doing it bc they are adults just obsessed with Disney. From my experience of a decade of work there pre pandemic Disney then had great benefits (other than pay) in high cost areas. They outright paid for college for FT emploees, had a robust job training program, offered paid adoption assistance, discounted daycare, showers at work, discounted location to buy some foods, the highest quality healthcare I’ve ever had at an affordable price along with several employee assistance programs in addition to union programs. When people are that low on income to live in their car in central Florida or Southern California and continue to show up to work believe me it’s not for the love of the brand or a theme park.
My boyfriend's aunt is college educated and had a high paying job and gave all that up to work a minimum wage Disney World job. She lives in a trailer park and not her car at least
I had this video on in the background while cooking and it caught me so off guard that I had to rewind to make sure I heard correctly. It sounds so odd, lol
worst disney adult is a teacher who only ever plays one single hour-long video of disney song piano covers on loop every single day during work periods and the lack of the lyrics that have been drilled into my head makes my brain fill them in and then i can't focus on anything. no of course this isn't pointed at anyone in particular why do you ask
Did we have the same teacher?? I had a math teacher in high school who told us, "A study found that students performed better on math tests while listening to Mozart, so I'm going to play music during your tests", and then proceeded to only play Disney piano covers while my mind involuntarily filled in all the words and the math questions turned to mush in my brain.
Ah shit it's me 😂 I'll play something else next class lol thank you for the reality check. I don't even like Disney that much but that loop has no ads 😂
Ok as a substitute I know I can trust those stupid videos. I don't always use exclusively disney instrumental but instrumental music is reliably school appropriate!
GIRL i was a disney cast member and got to work the sweet hearts nites in 2023, for 3 days straight there was a woman who would come into the park with regular clothes, change, and legit pretend to be briar rose. She had the basket of stuffed birds and everything and would offer photos with guest and would say she works there till security came to escort her out. I still think about her coming in 3 nights in a row to do that like girl just apply online
I’m gonna be real, I think one of the reasons millennials cling to Disney so hard is because of how many bangers came out so close together in our childhood literally back to back. Couple that with watching thousands of people dying on live tv at the beginning of adolescence and several crashes in the economy, followed by a MASSIVE recession when we started college/adulthood…it makes sense we’re trying to cling to the magic of innocence. That being said, I myself am not a Disney adult. I do however understand the fanaticism. But KINGDOM OF HEARTS…Tyler pleeeeease 🤣 As a cliff’s note, the game series isn’t about Disney characters, they just happen to be in it as a selling point (and it worked).
not just on TV...I know plenty of people who served in Afghanistan...not American but for Americans I'm sure lots of us either also served in Iraq or had friends or family who did...not to mention that some of us actually lost people in various terror attacks during the ill-fated War on Terror. And I keep saying we oddly just like, never really unpacked it. It was "you can't question it", followed by "oh so we all failed you for nothing and crashed the economy so now guess you'll have to agree to take jobs that openly exploit you if you want to have food at all and you'll never be able to afford a house - bye!" and we just had to sort of take what jobs we could and move on. So I get we can come off as "annoying" but I think what it really is is we all have a lot of just sort of trauma. Like, our "idealistic", "fighting for what you believe in" youth was spent...dying for nothing and getting screwed for it (at least in the West)...then having everyone else accuse us of ruining everything in wars they ultimately profited off at our expense. That said, that's not any younger generations fault and we probably should just actually unpack what happened one of these days. But also "that said" f*ck any younger generation that looks down on us for "not having boundaries at work" (if we tried to have "boundaries" at work we'd have been on the streets...there were no "healthy" jobs...it was work yourself to death or be out on the streets and die faster) or for "not owning a house" (we have debt...because the economy crashed, Brayden). But only f*ck then if they have *those* complaints, because *those* complaints (to me) come off as super entitled and insensitive...the rest of it, meh, it's fine that they mock it and are annoyed by it, we are kind of weird lol.
Crazy to me that people are taking their 13 children to Disney 5 times a year meanwhile my family can't even afford to go once in the whole time I've been a child.
I went once on a vacation and I did not have a good time. I think I was a bit too old (13) and I thought it was just crowded and boring. There was some good food though. So, depending on the age, you’re not missing much in my opinion
My mom is the ultimate millennial final boss, she's a Disney adult, Harry potter adult, An astrology girl, she unironically wears shirts that say "I'm adulting today", and she has a mug that says "but first, coffee" Edit: not trying to bully her, I just think it's funny lol Edit 2: didn't mean to start an argument yall, she's allowed to have interests, she just prioritizes disney over me sometimes so I thought it'd be funny to joke about 🥲
I always forget that millenials are old enough to have children that are old enough to type coherently online lol. I'm on the younger side of millenials with no plans to have any. My friend that's my age has an infant and my younger sister has a toddler (but I think she is barely considered Gen Z, not millenial)
I have SO many issues with putting Defunctland watchers and Disneybounders lower than the weddings and pin people. Defunctland, for me, just falls into "watching an expert be excited about a thing they know well" like watching YOU talk about Desperate Housewives or Jojo Siwa, things I don't care or know about at all, but watching you talk about it is fun! And the Disneybounders are often just... "hey, I'm going to Disney because I live 20 minutes away. Might as well closet cosplay for fun!" This doesn't apply to the people buying actual vintage pieces but like. Grabbing something disney-esque from your closet is way less deep in the iceberg than dropping 50k on a house of mouse wedding, you know?
This is so real, I have no particularly warm or fuzzy feelings towards Disney, but I love Defunctland and it's because I love niche history and really enjoy Kevin's approach to the topic. I'd say I'm one of literally millions of people who watch his videos and not all that many of us actually like Disney, we're just curious about the way this multimillion dollar conglomerate sprung up out of a small animation studio 😂
@@littlemisslizilonyeah like jengus crengus Tyler, sorry I'm an adult with ADHD... The quirks that lead me to watching Defunctland videos are the exact same quirks that lead me to watching Tyler yap about [topic of the week] so like... Idk about that
@arbyswitch5580 I actually watch him specifically *because* I can't stand Disney (like as a company) and it's entertaining to watch someone talk about how and why they went to shit lmao
Ngl I actually physically hit the dislike button after the defuntland tier. A video essay on facts and history is nowhere close to corporation obsessed Disney adults, like bffr
@@mrslvw Dollywood is better than Disney 😈 It's way cleaner, and less crowded (because no one knows it exists) anyways, might be more boring for kiddies, though.
@@Sandtalon I'm incredibly fascinated with why theme parks exist, and all the ways that they are very dangerous places and fail more often than they succeed, so Defunctland sometimes feels like perfectly curated content for my interests tbh
fifth generation “girl from your hometown” weighing in: the disney money comes from their monthly BAH (aka a monthly allowance for being a military wife). i’m pretty sure the disney engagement is contractually obligated by uncle sam himself, but luckily my boyfriend escaped before his sargent forced him to propose to me, so that’s just what i’ve heard from my friends and family. hope this helps!
BAH is for your rent/mortgage (it stands for basic allowance for housing). If you live on base, your BAH never even sees your bank account. BAS (basic allowance for sustenance) is probably what's being used. That's basically your grocery money so if you shop frugally and prepare your own meals you will definitely have some left over. Plus if you live in a high cost of living area, you get a cost of living allowance (COLA) as well, but if you're any kind of smart you'll shop on base and put your COLA in savings.
I feel like Dapper Day people should be their own category higher up on the iceberg, as a lot of them are people from the vintage community who usually just go to the Dapper Day Expo to shop vintage, show off their amazing outfits, meet other vintage people, swing dance and listen to jazz. For some, Disney's just a cool backdrop for it.
Seems cruel to poke so much fun out of that girl who cried at the castle because she was happy. Feels like mean girls picking on a girl for her autistic fixation that makes her really happy and trying to make her feel ashamed about it.
The Kingdom Hearts bit made me feel attacked, but I'll let you in on what this is about! So one of the biggest game genres through the 90's was a certain type of RPG. There was one company (Squaresoft) that created a ton of these bangers that we all grew up with and were huge parts of our childhood. Kingdom Hearts was a cross-over of Disney (another thing we grew up loving) and Square's Final Fantasy series. It was this giant merging of 2 different areas of our childhood, being headed by an industry-leading game company at their peak. It was also a huge deal for a household name like Disney to be doing such a big project with video games, which were not mainstream at the time and were mildly stigmatized. So it was a big step in broadening the gaming population and the normalization of gaming more broadly. The Hype was real. The game comes out and the opening video has this badass abstract cutscene and an absolute BANGER (Simple & Clean, Utada Hikaru). It's a major success and the game delivered. We all get to see our favorite characters from 2 different universes together and it's amazing. It was a real moment in time for those of us in that Venn Diagram. Anyway, they make like a dozen more games in the series to capitalize on the success, with many being in development hell for eons and others being so poorly thought out and nonsensical that the story is an actual meme at this point. The newer games also don't capture the same excitement because younger people didn't grow up with the types of games that are relevant to what made it special. I assume most KH people are like 90% nerd and 10% Disney like me. All Square fans were exposed and knew about Disney while most Disney fans had never played or knew anything about Final Fantasy. So it doesn't do a lot for the typical Disney person.
The Kingdom Hearts Adults are the anime millennial nerds now with tech money. It was Disneys way of trying to secure a foothold into the Asian market as they partnered with Square Unix (makers of the popular game Final Fantasy) to make the game. The game was pretty solid from what I remember. It was also around this time Disney was also expanding their theme park presence in Asia (ie Tokyo Disney Sea, etc). So securing the market in Asia was key, and as all things anime, weebs latched on. As you can tell I'm a defunctland Disney adult, lol.
I’m a 34 year old millennial who didn’t discover my love for the parks until I was 32. I just got back from a month solo in the Disney bubble in Orlando working remotely from the parks and resorts. That’s what kind of Disney Adult I am.😂
It is. Honestly, when people rip into Disney, HP etc, it just doesn’t stick for me. It’s essentially a hobby and something they enjoy and brings them happiness. It’s the same kind of people who ride and die for certain Anime series, cosplaying, Warhammer, D&D, etc. Let people fucking geek out and enjoy their lives. They’re trying to collect backpacks and “disneybound”, not trying to get you to buy essential oils and drink raw milk.
@@barbaraelizexactly. I don't know why people can't see that this is just a hobby and recreational activity. There are overly obsessive sports fans and weebs, making one thing your whole personality isn't exclusive to Disney. And I bet the same people who crap on Disney adults love going to Six Flags or Cedar Fair parks. Like that's any different. 🙄
It really is fun. It doesn’t have to be cringe. But as everything it’s the cringe that gets noticed the most. I finally leaned in pose COVID and it’s been such an outlet.
Disney runners though can fall into one of two categories: 1. Disney adults that started running for the experience (like mentioned in the video) 2. Regular runners that just go around doing different fun themed runs.
I do fun runs as a travel excuse. Why? Cause my kids are grown and my husband is like ‘cool have fun’. Cause if I’m doing a fun run while traveling it’s a health trip. Not a waste of money. Absolutely not. I’m not being lazy and wasteful. No. I’m traveling for my health. I have totally looked into doing a Disney run.
i was a huge fan of your content but seeing you negatively use and somewhat belittle plus size people for clicks on RUclips was heartbreaking, especially since you didn’t actually address it in the video. (ps defunctland is on par with the history channel at times it is genuinely one of the most well researched documentary and video essay channels on this app. don’t loop them in with fun fact accounts)
My uncle who passed a few months ago used to do the disney marathon. He was a big runner in general and he actually despised the disney theming but liked how easy the trail was. Only non-disney adult ive ever known to participate in that.
i have an ex that did the disney college program, the amount of effort i put into wrapping my head around delaying school to move to florida to work as a parking usher is mind boggling. To each their own.
The Kingdom OF Hearts killed me 💀💀💀 Also damn, as a former CP I definitely knew people who would die for Disney, buuut I just went to lifeguard because I wanted a break for a semester and go to the parks for free 😅
I don’t love how you put the Plus Size Park Hoppers in the thumbnail that way. It insinuates you think there’s something wrong with them and their account surrounding accessibility.
Are we surprised? She’s a straight sized girl hating on people for having a good time. Of course she’s gonna make plus size people the butt of the joke- visually. Straight up ableist behavior.
I have so many thoughts on Disney adults. Part of me thinks “whatever. Let people enjoy what they enjoy.” And the rest of me wonders “why?” It’s hot. It’s crowded. It’s overpriced. You spend the entire day waiting in line. I don’t enjoy it. I DO love endurance running, and the idea of running through Disney seems…like a waste of money. Perhaps the Disney bug missed me. I was a full-on adult the first time I went, and I hated it. Why have I been dragged there so many more times? Bc my husband loves Star Wars, that’s why.
As the older brother of one of the biggest Kingdom Hearts fans on the planet, I can safely say that they do NOT qualify as Disney adults. The Disney factor is almost insignificant to the super deep lore that you mentioned
my mother has a friend who is a nightmare before christmas disney adult and honestly? she's cool as fuck, always has brightly colored hair, plays dnd, has several cats, she's an icon with halloween decor up 365 days a year and i wish i had her wallet
I don’t like Disney, but I would ride and die for Defunctland! His content is well researched and presented. He’s probably the best documentary channel centered on Disney park info and other amusement park events on the internet!
I actively cried when i heard "kingdom of hearts". its just kingdom hearts. Legend has it the Disney Japan Office and the office of the Final Fantasy game devs shared a building, and in casual conversation they created kingdom hearts as a mashup between final fantasy and disney
i in no way enjoy disney. i do enjoy the history of things, and anime. kingdom hearts is a creative game thats been around for a long time, its interesting! and defunctland does far more than just disney parks stuff. an iceberg is supposed to include things everyone knows at the top, and things that are super niche as in you personally and maybe a handful of others could go into detail about.
I am on a Disney College Program & it is lowkey indentured servitude but they're VERY upfront about that in the contracts and info beforehand so like you gotta know what you're getting into & I LOVE it here! Also pin trading kinda satisfies the same feeling as gambling except you end up with corkboards of pretty, shiny things at the end of it
Our last trip we kept running into this one group we called "The Purple Family" because they all were wearing matching purple shirts, the dad looked like he was on valium or something and the mom was screaming at everyone constantly because she wanted like 50 pictures with every little decoration and the kids were just running rampant it was the actual worst. I'll never feel bad about Disneybounding- it made so many cast members smile and getting to wear my little homemade horns to meet Figment was probably the highlight of my whole trip. As far as being into defunct attractions go- the parks are full of so much history. It's a bit like watching an old, beloved painting being covered up and you only get to see photos of it and hear about what it was like to see it in person from those who were born before you or were lucky enough to be there. Maybe that's too sentimental, but you can't tell me you aren't a little sad Disneyland doesn't have its peoplemover anymore.
I think the "hate that I love this" part is actually pretty toxic and generally culture seems to be in a cycle of letting people embrace the things they like (so long as they don't press them on others or be obnoxious and stuff) and then it swings over to 'you must like the normally acceptable things or you're just weird' and it seems like we keep swinging between those two things being 'in vogue' without it settling. It's still nowhere near as bad as it used to be, so I think acceptance *has* moved forward very slowly, but I just don't...get...why people care what others like if they're not being annoying about it. There's lots of stuff that I personally dislike a lot or would find cringy, but if it makes someone else happy and doesn't hurt others then *GOOD,* I hope they enjoy themselves. People should just be free to explore things and then able to like what they like. (P.S. not really a Disney person myself tho I *did* like Star Wars a lot, but I do love SciFi and aviation like *way* more than the average person)
Exactly. I hate the toxic idea that we should make fun of or shame people who love things. Whether Disney, Anime, ect. People are literally OBSESSED with sports teams and somehow that's acceptable but not these other things?
My stepmom did the marathon, the 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, and full marathon are actually part of a challenge- you get a special medal when you complete it. We went to disney so she could run the marathon and it was INSANE. Merch, full-blown shoe stores, runners gear, and Disney stuff was set up in a massive room the day before the run, and all the runners got up at 3AM to do it before the parks open. She wants to do it again at some point
probably just me being a chronically online weeb but i find it weird when people think kingdom hearts is niche...it's basically FINAL FANTASY but they let disney cook. and sora has been the most requested character in smash for YEARS. sure not everyone has played it but i'll be surprised if no one has at least heard its ost, even if it's just background music...dearly beloved literally my beloved
How tf are you recommend that video of the dude sneaking onto the Disney island and then not say or even show the name of the video or the creator... Come on, give credit to the creators whose work you enjoy and use footage from and make it easy for us to actually find it. Video is ESCAPE FROM DISCOVERY ISLAND by Southern Pirate Outdoors.
I’m 54, I’ve been to Disneyland once, it was my honeymoon, April 26, 1992 AKA The Rodney King Riots in LA. There were no lines because everyone was hunkered down in their houses, and we actually really enjoyed ourselves 😂😂
I went to Disneyland for the first time for my 6th birthday, which was about a week after 9/11. The park was absolutely deserted and as a child I picked up on a weird vibe without knowing exactly why. To this day, I have recurring nightmares about a nearly abandoned Disney-esque theme park that is always semi-dark and has dead leaves blowing around in it 😅
@@parissinclair6513 that sounds horrifying! 😂 When I was 6, my grandparents took me to see Jaws, for the next 10 years I was scared of sinks , toilets, rivers, even my parents water bed. Kids are weird 😂😂
Thank god I'm not a weird Disney adult. *shoves kids out of the way at Olivander's wand shop, demands my mom take multiple pics of me with my butterbeer, and ugly cries the first time I see the Hogwarts castle*
Relevant fact: Disney adults represent a higher proportion of guests at Disneyland than at Disney World. I observed this while visiting both this year. Long story.
From my experience being in the forums and stuff a lot of Disney Adults prefer Dsineyland and some never been to Disney World, they swear its so much better or something lmao
It’s true! Most of Disneyland’s guests are annual Passholders, most of the guests at Disney World are unfortunately clueless tourists who think they’re at Universal🙃
as a pin trader, I find them as just cute little mementos from my trips and they’re cute to display on little corkboards (i’m also too far in at this point to stop 😅) ps. the editing on this video was stellar!!
Its very strange to be this early, excited for the video. Edit: Not a Disney adult, but I do feel like Disney bounding is also a thing cosplayers do. A closet cosplay is taking items you already own to make something that looks like a character without buying or making new stuff. To me they feel very similar.
Yeah, I could see Disney Bounding not because I'm obsessed with a certain character but because it a fun cosplay challenge. Also, I'm not gonna Disney bound in the Florida heat in kitten heels, fuck that.
Honestly, I'm not a Disney adult/fan, but I totally understand pin trading. Not to the extent you described, though. Pins can be really sentimental to people! I used to compete at health profession competitions. We would get pins for our respective state, and if we got to international comp we would trade for the other states. I loved it so much!! I still have all of my pins, because they bring back such fun memories.
I went to Disney World for the first time at 29, and I have loved looking for a pin that "speaks to me" to commemorate the trips I've been on, like I bought a Mickey Christmas wreath one when my mom and I went during Christmastime. I have a small collection but I don't want to trade any because I picked them out with purpose! Lol
let's be honest, Walt wondering why there are people dressed up as Disney Characters at his parks would be the last thing he would be questioning- the first thing he would say if he walked into any of the Disney parks in the modern day would be "Why are there so many coloreds ("colords" would be putting it nicely you know what word he would use) in my parks!!?" the second thing he would ask would be "Why are there queers in my parks!?"
""Why are there so many coloreds ("colords" would be putting it nicely you know what word he would use) in my parks!!?"" Disney had no problem with African Americans. It's Hispanics he had an issue with. He even got his mother to sign an affidavit to prove he wasn't Mexican and was in fact born in Chicago. (The entire story is hilarious, including Disney not being permitted to donate blood because of a Birth Certificate issue) I'm not saying he should replace MLK Jr. as head of the civil rights movement - but his pettiness towards "coloured" people was definitely pointed to one specific group.
One word: Celebration. Somewhere near the bottom is the rich people spending 3 million to live in a Disney home, on Disney property, and usually decorated with Disney stuff.
Yes..how DARE she try to correct her mistakes and grow as a person?! Everyone knows once you make a mistake, it automatically seals yours fate with everyone being doomed to interpret it in the worst faith imaginable, which will reveal your true character at its core
My mum collected the Hard Rock Café pins of places she went to prior to it being quite as franchised as it is today. She had/has it on her old denim biker jacket. Her point was that she'd go with the jacket, get a new pin (or all of them) of the place she went. One of her friends who didn't quite get the point of "she's been to all of them herself" got her several for her birthday once. She accepted them (ofc) but I think they were expecting a different/bigger reaction. Also the pins never got put on the jacket.
Nooo, I used to be a Nightmare Before Christmas goth! To be fair to my former self, I was 14. My prefrontal cortex was basically nonexistant. Also, yes. I was/am a theatre kid and if I had money, I would totally buy a parasol unironically. Hmm...Maybe my prefrontal cortex hasn't made as much progress as I thought.
The idea that fun has to do with your brain developing is sad. You can like things as an adult. Who cares what other people think? I was 30 when I realized I didn't have to care and be perfect adult. This is a whole video shaming people having fun.
Your prefrontal cortex has literally nothing to do with this, can you stop this crap, if not for others then at least for yourself? Let yourself enjoy shit. There's no age limit on enjoying a movie. Nightmare Before Christmas was a huge part of many of our lives and there's nothing wrong with still loving it. There's nothing wrong with wanting to channel the style, there's nothing wrong with enjoying things. At best you're being a bit of a jerk to yourself and others who like TNBC, at worst you're being an ableist ass.
So, even though you dont talk about them in the video you put plus sized women on the cover? To what? Be funny? Clickbait? Or just be fatphobic.. pretty sure I can guess actually.
I posted this elsewhere but the point stands here: I get the more obsessive Disney adults are pretty cringe but have you noticed the RUclipsrs posting videos trolling and dunking on them look and dress the most boring and have the most sterile, boring rooms/background possible ? Not that much better imho haha
I'm an out of the closet Disney adult. I went to Disneyland for the first time in 30 years last year. Was mostly looking forward to taking it in and enjoying the vibe. Went all out and stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. But I figured that trip would likely be the last time I'd go to the park. I do think about going back but it probably won't happen. The cost, the crowds, the weirdness of being a 50 something childless adult at Disney will likely keep me from going back.
My ex-boyfriend had a Star Wars, dad and a nightmare before Christmas mom. They were very thankful for they were 100% Disney adults. The whole house was Disney. They went to Disney all the time.
The older I get, the more I understand escapism. For me, I'd have season passes to the Renaissance fair if it was year round and I'd go on a regular basis or if there was a theme park that was strictly Harry Potter themed, I'd be there.
I feel like kingdom hearts fans dont go to the parks that much am i the only one? I've never gone to any of them. From my experience, most of the KH fans are just fans of Japanese RPG games..this one just so happens to include Disney characters LMFAO
Former Disney College Program here! I worked at World of Disney and we had a lady who would bring her kids and stand outside of the cast member only area and ambush us to check our pin lanyards. She would literally grab the lanyard around our necks and pull to look at them. She came at least once a week.
Btw, the challenge your friend made at rundisney (to run the 5k, 10k, 21k and full marathon on the same week-end), it's a real thing from Disney. It's called the dopey challenge and it's crazy expensive to take part in it.
I went down a defunctland spiral a couple months ago lmao. I've been to Disney a handful of times as a child but never got invested. Then idk I just stumbled upon one of those videos and found it oddly fascinating.
Do you remember the Turpins? They were the Disney obsessed duggar knock off family that were abusing all their kids and went to prison after one escaped and called the police
I feel like with the Defunctland genre of Disney adults, it's more so fans that love learning about the history of the park/attractions. I think the one thing you got right was the "they'd probably tell you a fun fact about how many bones were put in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride" line, because that is 100% something I would do lmao
As a professional Pin Trader, I can attest to the fact that we are in fact very serious about our pins. Think of the pins more like artwork and less like hard enamel pins. Some pins are made with moving parts special metal work that is very intriguing. And a lot of pins are made at limited addition 50, 250, 300. So these pieces of art are very hard to get your hand on and instead of buying one piece of art you can buy a big board, and create your own gallery at your house
I mean pins are art, I collect various pins from artists and they very much are, artist put just as much effort in them as they do posters and whatnot.
I'll be honest, as a massive theme park fan, one problem I have with the label "Disney adult," is that it implies that because you love the parks, you have a devotion to Disney as a brand, or even a corporation. (I don't) I've actually really pushed back on Disney for including so much IP in their parks for this very reason, the theming comes first. The reason why Disney is my number one theme park destination is because I love the art form as a whole, and Disney is still the best example of that. (No, Universal has NOT yet surpassed them in that, though Epic Universe looks likely to do so) I might be a fan of their parks, but I'm not going to devote my soul to some corporation, and recognizing those same elements I love in places like Universal or Efteling is real special. I wish a lot of so-called "Disney adults" would realize that for themselves
I've never considered myself a Disney adult BUT I will occasionally listen to the soundtracks at work every now and then. I can't help that the music is so perfect and nostalgic.
Another good one to add which is similar to the pin collectors are the popcorn bucket collectors, heard of people waiting hours for them and doing trips just to get them
My family had a friend who we used to collect popcorn buckets for, he couldn’t travel because he was in the kidney transplant list😢unfortunately once he got his kidney transplant the drs found cancer all over him & he passed away shortly after😞it was actually really sad seeing the viral Figment popcorn bucket cause I knew he would’ve loved it. I can’t explain the popcorn bucket hype but it’ll always remind me of Alan

Forgot the employees who live in their cars in order to work there.
Dang she didn’t heart this 😂😅
Wait... is that real
When people are that low on income to live in their car in central Florida or Southern California and continue to show up to work believe me it’s not for the love of the brand or a theme park.

worst disney adult is a teacher who only ever plays one single hour-long video of disney song piano covers on loop every single day during work periods and the lack of the lyrics that have been drilled into my head makes my brain fill them in and then i can't focus on anything. no of course this isn't pointed at anyone in particular why do you ask
I actually enjoyed that from my teacher. It kept the classroom calm.
JFC that’s unreal. I’m a teacher and that would never cross my mind.
Disney stalker 😅

I thought the same thing, so weird of a video essayist to dog on people who watch video essays…
This is so real, I have no particularly warm or fuzzy feelings towards Disney, but I love Defunctland and it's because I love niche history and really enjoy Kevin's approach to the topic. fifth generation “girl from your hometown” weighing in: the disney money comes from their monthly BAH (aka a monthly allowance for being a military wife). i’m pretty sure the disney engagement is contractually obligated by uncle sam himself, but luckily my boyfriend escaped before his sargent forced him to propose to me, so that’s just what i’ve heard from my friends and family. hope this helps!

It is. Honestly, when people rip into Disney, HP etc, it just doesn’t stick for me. It’s essentially a hobby and something they enjoy and brings them happiness. 1. Disney adults that started running for the experience (like mentioned in the video)
2. Regular runners that just go around doing different fun themed runs.
Ok, but who would pay so much for that?!?!
I do fun runs as a travel excuse. Why? Cause my kids are grown and my husband is like ‘cool have fun’. Cause if I’m doing a fun run while traveling it’s a health trip. Not a waste of money.

""Why are there so many coloreds ("colords" would be putting it nicely you know what word he would use) in my parks!!?""
Disney had no problem with African Americans. It's Hispanics he had an issue with. He even got his mother to sign an affidavit to prove he wasn't Mexican and was in fact born in Chicago. (The entire story is hilarious, including Disney not being permitted to donate blood because of a Birth Certificate issue)
I'm not saying he should replace MLK Jr. as head of the civil rights movement - but his pettiness towards "coloured" people was definitely pointed to one specific group.
I mean it's not like you can tell people are gay by looking at them, he'd be annoyed that there were Latinos working in his parks

One word: Celebration. Somewhere near the bottom is the rich people spending 3 million to live in a Disney home, on Disney property, and usually decorated with Disney stuff.
LMAO THE THUMBNAIL CHANGE. Remember you can never truly delete something off the Internet. We know what it originally was and shame on you. 😊
What was it….
Yes..how DARE she try to correct her mistakes and grow as a person?!
Everyone knows once you make a mistake, it automatically seals yours fate with everyone being doomed to interpret it in the worst faith imaginable, which will reveal your true character at its core
I don't do Disney pins but I love pin collecting, it's fun and more interesting than a fridge magnet or some other souvenir like that
My mum collected the Hard Rock Café pins of places she went to prior to it being quite as franchised as it is today.
This whole video was just ri-damn-diculous. And I’m not talking about the Disney Adults.
I kept waiting to laugh. Is this what commentary RUclips is now?
Wow you changed that thumbnail fast
As someone who has been deep in the gaming community for a lot of my life, hearing you compare the Kingdom Hearts lore to FNAF absolutely sent me😭
OMGGGG so proud to be your fav genre, nightmare before xmas purple/green haired girlie 🥰
I bet they had awesome merch collections!
@happilyeverafterhanna they did! Some of the coolest Disney stuff I've seen.
The older I get, the more I understand escapism. For me, I'd have season passes to the Renaissance fair if it was year round and I'd go on a regular basis or if there was a theme park that was strictly Harry Potter themed, I'd be there.
"anime kids of Disney adults" I feel very attacked, but KH was my entire life from 14-20.
Tyler I have such bad news for you. Kingdom Hearts lore is way beyond Five Nights at Freddie's. Like, at least 3x the amount
22:05 LISTENN I'm just autistic and two of my biggest special interests are theme parks and roller coasters
As a kpop photocard collecter I unfortunately semi-understand the pin trading community
Disney Urban Explorer things go insane
It got to the point where an animatronic at an abandoned attractions at Epcot got stolen
As someone born and raised in OC CA with annual passes off and on since junior high (I refuse nowadays though), you NAILED this.
(No, Universal has NOT yet surpassed them in that, though Epic Universe looks likely to do so)
I might be a fan of their parks, but I'm not going to devote my soul to some corporation, and recognizing those same elements I love in places like Universal or Efteling is real special. I wish a lot of so-called "Disney adults" would realize that for themselves
17:30 i would argue that in some ways they are the evolution of cookie monster pj pants girl
like my memory is not good enough to confirm this but i’m PRETTY sure those girlies had the pj pants on the bottom and nightmare before Christmas top
Real
I've never considered myself a Disney adult BUT I will occasionally listen to the soundtracks at work every now and then. I can't help that the music is so perfect and nostalgic.
tyler - i have never heard anyone call it kingdom of hearts.
ive been playing KH since i was 12. the lore is so fucking weird.
love you & your vids :)
