Final Fantasy 7 - Defeat the Midgar Zolom and learn Beta early

- This video shows how you can learn Beta from the Midgar Zolom the first time you encounter it. The characters used are at an average level that they should be this far into the game in a normal play through. Once you know Beta, you are pretty much set for disc one, as it is a very powerful spell.
Strategy:
The key to this battle is having the Fire materia linked with the Elemental materia on the armor of the character with the Enemy Skill materia. That way, they only take half damage from Beta as it is a fire spell.
Being on the back row will lessen the damage taken from physical attacks and having the Sadness status will further reduce damage. You can use Tranquilizers to inflict Sadness on your characters.
Inflicting the Poison status on the Zolom is very helpful, although, not entirely necessary. Also, using a Graviball is recommended if you have one, as it speeds up the fight, but it is also not necessary.
Keep the HP of the E.Skill holder at max at all times and as soon as they learn Beta, cast it back in the Zolom's face.
A minor side note: you don't need a chocobo to cross the swamp as I inadvertently demonstrated. Just good timing. Or you could use the save trick.
I remember on my first playthrough i managed to get across on foot and avoiding the snake by pure chance, and i thought that was the way to do it, also because I've missed the chocobo farm (and the related summon).
Only years later I've learned the intended way was to capture a chocobo to outrun it.
This enemy skill is so valuable early in the game I remember spamming it when encountering groups of hostiles.
0:33 you actually crossed without encountering it!
And I did too! =D
Yeah i did it on my second try, it was easy
@@totallynotkhobsessed k
I remember I did the same cuz I was too stupid to catch a chocobo. But I was always really good at the game Snake.
So what? That has been a valid strategy for decades.
Aqualung and Beta are the best spells for early game, even surpassing the summons until you get Odin
What spells are good after Odin
White Wind, Big Guard and Matra Magic too.
@@JJ-vp3bd knights of the round
Flare, Freeze, Break, Tornado, Ultima, Comet.@@JJ-vp3bd
You actually went across without encountering the snake
I went across the swamp by foot every time I was at this point of the game, which is totally possible. I did visit the farm but never realized the chocobo option, lol!
@@Jungletraveler00_12 well long time ago RUclips was not a thing so alot of people can't get though haha
I'm surprised you ever have....I'm sure I've run across that swamp 10 or 20 times for sure. The impressive thing is defeating it at level 15.
@@ATerminalJunkie I'm lecel 23 and have Meteorain and Planet Protector lol
@Jedidiah Pakula It seems you really have to time its position in the swamp once you step on and make your move.
I usually beat him right after midgar its actually easy.Use tranquilizers to induce sadness, don't attack it with the person who has the enemy skill materia , make sure that persons health is kept at max and put elemental and fire in your armor slot.
Follow those steps and get Beta super early , with Beta , and a couple other enemy skills you become a power house early on which helps me speed up the pace because ive done beat this game like 7 times lol, have fun everytime though.
Oh and move all characters to the back row also this helps with regular attacks.
I don't see how it's easy at all. Like yeah you can try a bunch of times and eventually do it. But he has a bad habit off attacking the person with enemy skill equipped right before casting beta, and even when he doesn't, the first time I cast beta doesn't kill him and he just bites and kills the character. So it's more of a do it over and over until you win thing, but I doubt anyone gets it first try every time
💯💯💯💯
Out of curiosity, what is the point of having sadness on all your characters?
@@havenlewis5913 he will attack everyone. The person with the enemy skill materia will not get kicked out of the fight though if you don't attack with that character.
Its important to have 1 healer.1 doing damage.
@@ShawnHellwege you take 30 percent less damage from physical and magic attacks.
Comes in handy when it uses beta and also makes it easier to heal.
Your limit gauge will fill up slower.I usually do random battles until its full and then use the tranquilizers.
When i was 10 years old, i leveled up so long, that i was able to beat the snake, to across the swamp 😂
I actually did that on my first play. 😂
Same here, i thought i was supposed to beat it to advance the story. I think i levelled up to like level 40. I spent weeks just grinding that area. And then when i crossed the marsh and it played the cutscene, I was like, WTF am i supposed to do now? Beat it again? And i just kept wondering the wilderness until i realized that there was a cave. It was like the biggest facepalm i had ever given myself.
@@Jamie-cz2xu Old school games definitely never held your hand through the process 😂
i remember being younger exploring the place trying to figure out what to do and this thing appearing out of nowhere and made me shit myself
You can also get your limits up to lv 3 here if you grind some just use hypers to get them faster as for him just put everyone on the back row tank beta then use it on him and of course poison helps do it fast enough he will only kick one person out, great video bud
Came back for Rebirth
Don’t know why this was recommended to me now but sick thanks
And here I was grinding till my entire party was lvl 27
DID IT WORK?
......You can use Beta in the battle you learned it?!
What did you just see, Lisa?
Rebirth had me going "Am I crazy? Could've sworn it was called Midgar Zolom... Was I just THAT illiterate as a kid?!"
Today: I'M NOT CRAZY! 😭
idk why they felt the need to change it to something damn near unpronounceable
I think I have had a revelation. If one party member is flung out of the battle when the two remaining party members die it doesn't prompt a game over it takes you back to the out of battle character on the world map. If you get nuked by beta and die you should still learn it when it lands and then be able to have it in your E.Skill materia.
The one that learns Beta has to survive the battle. That is one of the conditions for learning an enemy skill. If the battle ends with that one dead, then it doesn't count.
ahhh got ya. Yeah I am replaying after about 15 years and was trying for beta last night, but I mistakingly forgot to grab graviballs.@@ViralHijack
Using beta to beat beta's user
It's funny when you come back level 50 and crush it in one second.
Midgar zolom take well over 1200 hp when he "beta's" me... im lvl 22 at this point maybe ive lvl'ed up too much to do it.
Great Weapon make sure your team is in the back row, has sadness, and the person learning beta has the elemental and fire materia linked on their armor
Put your party in the back row so they take less damage.
Nathan Hansen gave good advice. Another tip is to use the Talisman accessory to give the person with the Enemy Skill a Spirit boost. That way they take even less damage from Beta.
If you can get Barrett’s second limit break, you can remove all his mp, so he can’t cast beta
@@nathanhansen6784 Back row doesn't reduce damage from beta since it's a magical attack. It will reduce damage from the physical attacks though.
Congrats, you just won the game.
how about if you didnt get Elemental materia earlier on.. his beta attack usually wipes me out
Tranquilizers induce sadness and you take less damage. Limit Break charges slower tho
You can also put that party member in the back row so they take less damage. If you cross the swamp and head into the mines, you can pick up a long range materia as well (although I don't think this is a necessary part of the build) it can help to keep your damage output the same as if you were in the front row (for whatever character you put it on)
My best friend beat Zolom on his first try. So it is possible.
What level are your characters? I never survived the bite after Beta. the only way was to give enemy skill to Aerith, because her Limit is the only thing which can heal her before the bite occurs.
Cloud and Red are level 16. Barret is level 15.
Using Beta against it was just epic.
This scaled bastard's trump card really is the element of surprise. If yer properly prepared like this bruv here, you can get the E.Skill and own Zolom without and Chocobo hassles.
I "accidently" learned Beta and leaved the fight cause i knew i wasnt beat it.then i saw i learned that Attack.i saved and get in a new fight and beat hear easily with her own attack. 😂😂😂
oh smart! I usually wait till I get fire ring, I should have thought of this lol
I just level up to lvl 30 and beat him normally
That is the one materia i dont understand. I have had it equped since i got it...and it still has no skills learned.
Ive played the game 5 t8mes...and the max number of skills ive had on it 7 i think.
What am i doing wrong?
To learn an enemy skill, you need to first be hit with the skill (on the person that has the E.Skill materia equipped) and survive the attack. Then you need to win the battle to retain the skill. Running afterward won't work. There are only 24 acquirable skills in the game. Some need a special setup (i.e. manipulating an enemy) to learn. Your best bet to get them all is to look up a guide as some are missable.
why is the beta taking 600 hp, my takes 1200 hp
Elemental Materia + Fire Materia in linked slots of your armour reduces fire damage and so does having Sadness applied to your character.
Sadness you can apply to yourself with tranquilizers but the Elemental Materia is a missable item from Shinra HQ, you get it from answering Domino's puzzle correctly on the first go on floor 62.
You can do it at even lower levels than shown here you just need to change the battle timing settings to active and be ready to use cure once Beta is cast so the zoloms bite doesn't KO you right after.
Beta was that shit when you were at your lower levels
Where do you learn metra magic? Or what enemy teachs you?
The Custom Sweeper enemies in the area just outside of Midgar have Matra Magic.
Viral Hijack Thanks a lot!!!
When u get matra magic also steal from the same enemy to get a strong weapon for barret
To add on to the Barett weapon from custom sweeper. The Atomic Scissors are very powerful in this part of the game raising his weapon at stat I belive to 32. Use the Long Range Materia so he can still attack enemies that are airborne since the weapon becomes close range like Cannonball and Rocket Punch.
@@spadez808 k
por qué usas sadness? no es mejor fury?
recién vi en internet que el daño recibido baja un 30%, no sabía eso, siempre usaba fury para aumentar la barra de límite más rápido
Sadness so the damage intake is lower
I had no idea that fire would half the betas attack. I did it the hard way and got my characters hp passed 1200. Bad thing about that is you can't collect on Aeriths what is it weapon or special from that guy in the cave because of all the battles.
What do you mean, you can't get these because of the many battles? You can always get them 🤔
@@Kaiser_Wilhelm_IV. N0 I meant if y0u 1ev1 up t0 that 1eve1 y0u wi11 g0 passed aeriths what is it 1imit break 0r 1weapn fr0m that guy s1eeping in the cave wh0m c0unt's y0ur 1v1s
@@OwlyEagles he will give you the mythril whenever you visit him and your total battle count ends on an 11, 22, 33, 44 and so forth. However, you can only visit him after getting the buggy after the Corel desert prison.
You can't get Aerith's final limit earlier than Rocket Town, because the other guy you have to give the mythril to is not in his house (nearby Gongaga) before that time.
Just use Aeris planet protector lol. Her limit breaks are the easiest to gain. Giver her the E-Skill with Matra magic for the kill based Limits you'll have it in no time.
Cept she dies :P
@@jaydee758 not really, enemies at that point of the game shouldn't be a threat considering if you leved up as you're supposed to. By this time the party will be 15 atleast and got carbon bangles back at Shinra HQ.
Who is Aeris?

Just use chocobo to get to Mythril mines, lvl up to 30(cloud will have limit lv 3) and beat him normally
Sounds like something a loser like Stalin would say.
or you can just do this, which is easy, and a perfectly sound choice
LMFAO I was level 23, had planet Protector and Meteorain. I made quick work of him. :D
Haha first time I’ve ever seen beta.
