- Short Form anime is a medium that understands the value of time. Less than twenty minutes a piece - often a lot less - these bitesize shows truly embody the mantra of 'less is more', working twice as hard, twice as fast to make an impact. In this video I explore this fascinating art-form, and share with you eight of my favourites from its wide and varied pantheon.

A huge shout out to the ludicrously knowledgeable Anime Collector, who helped track down an elusive OST for this video - and even generously bought it for me! You can find his work over at : / animedvdcollector

"Many turned out to be hentai". Love how he still tells this in such a soothing voice. This guy coul make a top 10 hentai and still hit you in the feels with it.
"just because our heroes are 2D their lines doesnot have to be"
❤❤❤👌
"It's a good reason not to waste time, on things that are willing to waste mine" is another good one. Such a quotable video.
2:53 I could say that about your videos. You speak so calmly and at a relaxed pace but so eloquently that it feels like you’re giving a full 10 minutes to each series in this video. Excellent work!
I completely agree. I felt like I was the one viewing the each series. Great pacing on the storytelling :)
I'm so happy that you talk about Galko chan. I love Galko Chan, it's cool that an anime talks about girl stuff and explains stuff about it. The author's artsyle in terms of coloring is everything I want, it's so pretty 😫💓💓💓.
It's one of my favourite series ever! So glad to find a fellow fan :)
Thanks Joe, that was worth the wait.
"a surprising amount of which turned out to be Hentai"
And yet, I dont feel surprised hearing that.
I can't belive it's not Hentai!
Anything can be hentai, if you're creative enough.
Seconded about Honobono Log, I liked the opening song so much I kept looping it. For some slice of life comedy I also recommend "I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying", about an office lady and her otaku husband.
You have such a way with words. Thank you for another video.
I feel like Nichijou should get an honorable mention. It still has a standard 20 minute per episode run time but the pacing of it is just a bunch of comedic bits that range from 5 minutes to 5 seconds.
Great, as always. Joe, if you haven't seen the live action of Wakakozake, I highly recommend it.
I watched it for this video! I never knew it existed before now - there's so many seasons :D
Nice to see Honobonolog get some recognition! Definitely deserves to get some love with how it deals with day to day life and mental health!
Good to see some Space Patrol Luluco too!
Looking forward to watching Fireball on your recommendation!
I've only been binging your channel recently, and I find in a sense your show-specific review style matches with the mantra of these shorts. Conciseness is part of it, but knowing which words to use and let them punch with your delivery too.
Great job on this one. I'm looking forward to watching ALL of these!
There's something about the simplicity of Shorts that bring a lot of meaning to them.
You are the Master, Joe. 3 minutes in about a 3 minute show I've never seen, & you have me crying already!
Made my day waking up to a beyond ghibli video
I did not know this was a thing! Thank you so much for putting in the effort of putting this together, I'm really looking forward to enjoying all of these!
Great work as always Joe - can't wait to see what you do next.
I truly love your videos. Thank you for making them.
Great writing, great editing and your voice is relaxing but impactful at the same time.
Oh boy, I can't describe how grateful I am for this video. I just watched Kanojo to Kanojo. I never thought there were so many short anime
Patiently awaiting *that* video. Great work as always!
Thank you very much for this kind of content man! I really enjoy listening and watching your videos,Truly terrific content.
Have a great day!
Been awhile since I watched one of your video, really loved every each of it. Thank you.
that was an excellent list, you really did them justice with such well-worded praise. I think I'd enjoy a good many of these. thank you for the great video.
Great Video as always.
I'm in the middle of watching Nadia: The Secret of Bluewater. Anno's and Myazaki's handwriting is all over it could make for an interesting video. Not only for the history, the show is pretty good as well and no one else did it justice so far.
Take care!
Great video as always
All of the titles you covered are fantastic and I'd like to add two of my favourite shorts for anyone interested:
-I can't understand what my husband is saying (4 mins, 26 eps.)
-Detroit metal city (13 mins, 12 eps.)
Underrated channel. You deserve more views
Thank you for your continued hard work and love of anime. You really do stand out as a unique producer of great content in a very crowded and often hypersensitive field.
Well, time to add Flugel & Galko to my list of anime waifus from series I've never watched. (Even though the former isn't even a human being.) But other than that, can't wait for Aggretsuko S3 though.
Great video as always, Joe!
Your voice is so calming! Thank you!
So many good recs! Can’t wait to start watching:)
Such a fantastic video! Your Chanel is my favourite on RUclips!
Well now, do you have any idea how many more anime show I now have to watch because of you.....
I never gave the shorts a chance, I assumed wrong.
Hearing your voice again makes me feel at rest and appreciate this form of entertainment
As always a very good video. This is a very good introduction to this type of anime.
I just stumbled on you...already one of the few anime review sites I love
Thank you
Omg thank you for putting the names of the anime in the description! So many times I’m watching a video and they don’t put the names and then I have to go searching after the end of the video...gyahhh!!! So thank you!!!!
I loved how the Honobono Log part felt like I wanted to know more... exactly how you said you felt, nicely done :)
As always, a lucid and heartfelt - I was going to say "analysis", but I think "revelation" is a better word. I love the calm yet deeply human tenor of your narrative. You let the pictures say so much and your words are always complimentary to the visuals, not overriding. Thank-you again. Would love to know where a number of these shorts are available.
Aggretsuko is available on Netflix, whilst Climb, Wakakozake, Luluco, and Galko-chan are all available on Crunchyroll. As for the others... google is your best friend ;)
@@BeyondGhibli Thank you! 🙂
Your video’s make feel so good thank you for making such an amazing
Channel and always being awesome also this episode was a list of anime I love 💕
Only RUclips channel I have notifications for....every time it pops up I remember why! Great video as always!
i've been watching your videos for a year now. seeing you always manage to put out my favorites and narrate what laid unspoken in my mind and a lot more new information in every video of my favorite stuffs. sori bad english, what im trying to say is. i love you and your videos are so beautifully well done and a alternate universe Beyond Ghibli would do justice in reviewing your channel.
I have waited two years for you to make this video. I am so happy you made a video on short-form anime
Long time viewer of the channel! This video just got recommended to me again and I still like it. Your deep calming voice combined with the high quality editing and wonderful stories you tell, make every video of yours one truly charming experience.
Nevertheless, my point is that you are an amazing content creator has given so many good memories of your own works as well as the ones you advise have left me in awe. I hold only admiration for you and wish you everything good.
PP. : To every other one who reads it. I just want you to know that every day can be made special, and life is worth living it, just be happy and try make others happy too. Beyond Ghibli is a talented creator who deserves a lot more recognition and you can help just by watching his videos, I am sure there is something for each of us to enjoy there.
Your videos are really warm
Really liked the thumbnail and a very well done video.
As always sublime, I'll watch this again and have your voice lull me to sleep, that's a compliment by the way!
Love the content keep it up
Thank you for bring forth these gem's of the medium... Your point is spot on, a show that gets to the heart of the story and take great care in preserving the narrative, as well as staying in touch with it's audience will always be at the top with me.
This is precisely why I hate shows that have good characters, but story lines and arc's that are drug out simply for the sake of cranking out another episode, One-Piece and JoJo are prime examples of this. To the point that they keep going back over already seen content, or create worthless filler episodes only because the staff is so exhausted with creating a series that seems to have no end, or substances for that matter.
I love the short format as well as one season shows that are endearing as well as staying on course, that don't loose their audience to the boredom of having to endure a 10-episode sub-arc just to resolve a minor issue in order to advance the story along.
Again thank you. ^_^
Anime shorts never get enough attention, so good on you! There are some great ones out there.
Super nice! Lots of interesting shows to add to queue👍
Excellent as always, I knew about shorts but ignorant of the quality or quantity
I loved this. I would support a second part to this to explore more short form anime
Good stuff, thanks!
13:50 love your work like always man.🌟
Another Stella Vid Joe! 😁
Among these anime, I've only watched "Honobono Log". It's so cute & adorable. I'll definitely watch the other ones. Thanks Joe. These anime are so unique.
Thank you for your effort to make such excellent content! It's very inspiring to dig deeper into the huge amount of mediocre animation to finally find the gems we are longing for
Magic! Thank you. Just what I needed today. It's a bit grim here in Melbourne at the moment.
Terry and Dianne
excellent vid, i love what you introduce to me :D
Some worth mentioning:
Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu - a sci-fi comedy focusing on a mecha pilot more concern with his comfort in the cockpit than on the grand space conflict around him in which he's fighting, but the fun moments keep coming, especially if you have some passing familiarity with mecha classics.
I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying - a charming slice-of-life about a couple where the husband is a stay-at-home otaku blogger, whose world is somewhat alien to his wife.
So good!
great video
Every time I watch your channel I get the chance to fill my torrent list with great works.
Um, why hasn't anyone offered you a job reading audiobooks ?!?! You got a powerful voice and I really enjoy your video!
Great video. Thx.
Thanks for your work Joe, all of your recommendations are great.
I personnaly recommend "The Diary of Tortov Roddle"
I'm glad to find someone who's talking about this, especially from the aspect of saving time. I won't get into the larger animes mostly because I don't want to spend that much time on a single show. Why do that when I could watch a diverse lot of movies and other shows in the same time? I look for animes with fewer episodes, like Magica Madoka and Munto, or shows with bite-size episodes like what you're talking about. This needs to be more of a thing.
I am a huge fan of short-form anime series. This was a great video. I have to check out Fireball.
Yesssss missed ya
I definitely see why one would want to consider short anime but never really tried it. But now I am definitely watching a few... great video as always though.
12:15) Please Tell Me! Galko-chan absolutely wanna watch this one. I need something to counter act the " boy accidentally running into a changing girls room" and "overpowered protagonist" tropes.
Come on "unpacking and demystifying and making us feel silly for ever believing them.." while panning on this 13:22 so good 😂😂😂😂
The manga is also amazing, if you end up enjoying the short anime then definitely check out the manga,
Agreed, I only started reading the manga after making this video and was overjoyed to find it carries on long after the series ends :) and the art style and colour is absolutely stunning as well!
Absolutely, thank you MugenHeadNinga (really cool name by the way). 😱
@@BeyondGhibli Galko-chan has a manga, too!? Yay! More time well spent with my favorite doppelganger! Sweet!
One I don’t see on here, much to my surprise, is very soft and fluffy Pan De Peace, an understated anime that literally only revolves around bread, the discussion of bread, and a tight knit group of high school girl friends being shown eating or making bread. With just 13 episodes in the recipe, and a baking time of 3 minutes 15 seconds each, you’re going to want to gobble up every morsel of this fancy, tasty treat.
Thank you! I watched Wakakozake a couple years ago and loved it, but I forgot what it was called and could never find it again..
The Diary of Tortov Roddle is my favorite. Somewhat similar to A Piece of Phantasmagoria, it's a collection of stories of a traveler witnessing various surreal occurrences. It's fantastic.
Wow talk about my new favorite anituber.
Yesssssss new vid! :)
hell ya man good shit
Many thanks to you for sharing these gems! Liking, commenting, and already subscribed! I'll hit the bell too, come to think of it...
Space Patrol luluco is now one of my favorite studio trigger anime, with little witch academia & SSSS Gridman below it.
I suggest you give a shot to Hakumei to Mikochi, the 24 minutes episodes are actually composed from smaller ones, usually 2 to 4 mini-eps!!! And also Olympia Kyklos is amazing!!!
This is some pretty insightful stuff, really changed my perspective on this topic, ( who has seen poyo poyo by the way )
can you do a video about "Japan Sinks 2020" please. Your calming voice and the heart-felt anime really suit each other
For god's sake work on your tags dude, it took me way too long to find this video again after i forgot how it was called. Videos this good shouldn't be that hard to find.
Shorts have forever been but a cool breeze in Australia, if it wasn't for the internet id never get to experience them.
Great stuff! Have you heard of I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying?
3 minute episodes about a married couple, rare in and of itself, that is so emotionally touching but hillarious at the same time. It's a little packed with references that will date over time, but most of the jokes aren't referential.
i'm just waiting for the Socialist revolution arc of Aggretsuko
James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman, and you, are three people I could listen to while ya'll were narrating the end of the universe, and I'd be happy to listen.
Just became like #1000, get to it x'D
"My video [...] ended up a lot longer than I intended. Apologies for that."
Are you fucking kidding me?
I wish all your videos had Spanish subs, I really like to share this with some of my friends.
I'm glad Hobono was on the list
Hi there!! Thank you so much for your videos! It would be great if you could tell us were we can find, watch, buy or download all the animes you talk about, at least how you watch them in your country. It is very frustrating wanting to enjoy all these content and don't be able to get it anywhere :'( Thanks again!!
Hell yeah! I hit the Like Button cuz I want to know which Hent*i is your favorite! ... And no need to apologize for the lenght of your video because they're never too long :)
Thanks for posting the wonderful video. These are definitely going on my Must Watch List, especially now that I have less time than ever to watch my favorite anime.
Galko-chan is one of my fave anime, ever, but not for the reason you might expect. Although, I love & laugh at the ribald absurdities of the characters' antics, it's for Galko that I couldn't stop watching.
My beloved twin sister was 27 when she suddenly passed away, leaving me grasping for anything I could find to fill the gapping hole her passing left in me. And Galko, although I discovered it 13 years after the event, did a wonderful job of plugging that hole, even for a few minutes a shot. Galko IS my sister. The attitude, her looks, her brilliance, her ditziness, her kindness, the way her nonconformist streak & pornstar body so badly juxtaposed against her inherent shyness & Christian faith. It was like getting a chance to visit my darling for a little minutes before having to return to the insane bustle & noise that drove me to want her again in the first place. I'll always be grateful for those few minute visits, & I keep going back for more whenever life gets to heavy & I just need a breather.
But it's you, Joe, that I want to thank for releasing this video when you did. I just suddenly & expectedly lost my job of 6 years a couple weeks ago, & was just as suddenly dropped head first into a new one I didn't want & that turns everything in my comfort zone on it's head. Life has been complete chaos, confusion, & physical pain since then & to hear your warm, soothing, comforting voice talk about short anime to watch when you have no time to even sleep, was made to order for right now. May Haruhi bless you, my friend. You're the BEST!
Wow, I'm really touched. Thank you for your kind words! I'm sorry to hear about your sister, but I'm so glad you found solace in Galko-chan of all places! Take care of yourself :)
One of my favorite short anime series is from Studio Trigger, it's on the youtube channel Anime Bancho, and it's titled Turning Girls. Basically, after making Inferno Cop, they took all their female non-animation staff and told them to make something. They made one of the most bracing cringe comedy series I've seen. It's mean, and biting, and... oddly bittersweet.
My Last Days is one and only anime that have transformed me compared to anything else
Ooh, could the lightbulb in the desert imagery from A Piece of Phantasmagoria have inspired parts of Trigun? I was struck by familiarity as soon as I saw that clip. The series certainly looks older than Trigun at any rate, so it’s possible.
So, just one recommendation, you should watch "Genius Party". It's a compilation of shorts with a very unorthodox approach to styles used. As a bonus, the last entry is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, with the score composed by Yoko Kanno.
Some of the best Shorts I have seen are actually music Videos.
Wonderful research, mate.
I feel I am relieved from outperforming anime into actually enjoying anime.
(I hate current hollywood. I haven't watched a new hollywood movie since three years)
