Why Beck Rocked

- Beck was one of those rare adaptations that felt absolutely vital to its manga counterpart. It might feel a little dated today, but the music it brought to that silent world is still ringing in my ears nearly twenty years on.

Special thanks to Patrick Henaghan for covering and deconstructing many of Beck's songs for use in this video. Patrick has been producing songs and covers for Beyond Ghibli for years now, and you can find his work over at : discobible.com
My good friend Saku animated those wonderful eye-catches, make sure to check out the rest of his work over at : / fakegamer95 & Shiiverse?s=09

beck needs a new anime that covers the whole story. it also needs all the volumes to be released physically in english. such a great manga
yessssssssss
Sadly i believe the artist has died a while ago
@@nomore7285 that’s the director, author is still alive
For a little while they were available in English, I remember reading the entire story in a Barnes and Noble several years ago.
(And I wonder why Barnes and Noble is struggling after going there to read without buying anything)
I absolutely agree with you though, Beck really deserves a full anime rendition. It’s a huge undertaking considering the standard we expect from anime these days, but man I think it’s be worth it for a studio to do.
@@ringoringoringoringoringoringo the story is completed anyway, so we don’t have to worry about lack of source material.
Finally someone that gives beck what it deserves. Beck is such a masterpiece, both manga and anime. Thank you for 16min of great entertainment as always. Looking forward to seeing the results of your next project.
@TheWhiteFang284 i would say the main difference between manga and anime when it comes to beck is as it's being talked about in the video, that when reading the manga you miss the music and the personalities the characters display through the music.
Otherwise, i wouldn't say there's a notable difference but they do have a little different charms to each other that the other don't have. In my opinion at least.
The manga lacks the music. But its very very worth a read. Its absolutely worth it. It is honestly a better and more complete story. Where the anime ends there is so so so so much more story.
I agree, it is criminally underrated and not talked about. Beck is one of my top 5 anime of all time, and its one of the best show soundtracks bar none, only being bested by the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Carole and Tuesday.
It’s yet another best of had all the hype but just got forgotten because of its age.
Its one of the few mangas i own in whole i even have a collection of their mini guitars
I love how that commercial cutaway was placed in the video.
So, Beyond Ghibli has come back with 'Beck'. Oneday you'll surely rock the internet. As always, nice video.
Beck is my favorite depiction of band life in any media I've ever seen.
I’m always just kind of surprised whenever anyone has said they have seen this show.
Means they've gotten through the entry level stage where your favorite show is My Hero.
Beyond the point of watching 2 mainstream anime and calling themselves a hardcore weeb
Oh wait there’s a lot more series like that. Try to find someone that knows what el hazard, or dirty pair is, soul taker. No worries though the internet is slowly bringing the oldtaku back to the surface and the old masterpieces back into availability.
Same here. This anime has a special place in my memory.
I never seen it but read the manga
Oh man, I'm so glad you made this. As someone who's been a musician since I was 15, BECK really nailed how my teenage self felt about music. As I've gotten older, my musical dreams have morphed a little and, although I still play guitar, I mix and master music for other people and just wrote the OST to a video game.
In fact, your video made me realise that I met the band I just finished mixing for at a live house in Shimokitazawa that was the basis for one of the live houses in Beck! As shown in your video its called Club 125 in the anime, but the real live house is called club 251. Crazy!
That is so cool! I didn't know there might be references like that here.
Oh shit, what's the name of the game?
I still sing "Moon on the water" ... and I think that scene of koyuki singing this song, is one of the greatest scene for an anime ever^^
I listen to the closing theme "My World Down" in the car on a regular basis.
I remember watching the anime in my early years of high school. Then I found about the manga and spent a whole summer reading it with its OST in the background
Best experience that a manga has brought to me
I still need to read the manga.
@@gundamsondam make sure you have the Devil's Way song in the background when you read that one scene with Eddie. Fits
i don't know you but i alredy envy you son of a bitch. what a experience that must have been
Man I was the same way!
Watching Beck's anime before reading the manga elevates the reading to a bigger dimension, definitely. Once you've done it the soundtrack starts playing in your head while reading where there was only silence.
This manga/anime was so emotional to me and the nostalgia was just overwhelming. Great! Moon On the Water always make me cry lol
Yep ep 23 to 26 was such a good pay off and the emotion in the singing makes this a classic
THERE'S BEEN A BECK VIDEO ESSAY ON RUclips THIS WHOLE TIME???!!! RUclips ALGORITHM, YOU HAVE FAILED ME.
Man, seeing someone make a video on Beck in this day and age is awesome. Such an underrated anime and manga.
we got here in the end
Oh man, so many memories with Beck. I had a chance to see it only a year after I graduated from highschool. Be it a few years earlier, I might be a completely different person now. This anime and manga gave me a right push at a wrong time. Better late than never, but I'm still salty about missing out on such an inspiring piece in my adolescence.
So u think u watched if late
@@elewoo7131 I think if I watched it earlier it would've made a much bigger positive impact on me.
@@telefrag.can’t go through life with that regret. I had that push of watching this in early high school, started that band that had that energy, but it all just dissolved. I used to have such regret that I didn’t push harder, or that we didn’t try to make it work, but now I look at it fondly as a moment of my life that was nice.
I'm having somewhat of a similar experience myself. You got this though man.
I was having a pretty awful day, but honestly, maybe it'll be alright, BG posted today.
your writing is just so extremely comfortable, you catch really nice emotions with the words and the paragraphs flow into eachother really well. always a pleasure to watch beyond ghibli
Thank you for giving this masterpiece the recognition is deserves. I used to read this together with my old band mates and we laughed and secretly be afraid of how hard the reality is to be a great band. I still read it even now when things get too hard to cope with. Your words have captured what I felt for this manga perfectly. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
You got me in tears man. This is exactly what I have been feeling about Beck for years and I'm so glad you brought that to light.
Just finished watching Beck because of this video. Honestly didn't feel dated at all. I'm in love with these misfits. Gonna go buy the manga now.
Welcome back, Joe! Hope, you are all right.
All good here! Gonna take a couple days off and play some video games now that this project is done. Hope you're doing well too :)
I have been hooked on every single song from this anime, especially 50 Cent Wisdom by Dying Breed, I mean hell, I even bought myself a guitar and started practicing because of this show
This series literally saved my musician self, as I am already quiting on playing music, made me cry from anime to the live action, pushed me to sart dreaming big and hold drumsticks again
Still my favorite man. Nothing really captured me like Beck
Greg Ayres and Brina Palencia were so great in the Funimation dub for BECK.
Brina's version of 'Moon on The Water' is pure magic.
I come from a musical family, but never really got into until I saw Beck on my cable’s “free on demand” shows. I was 14 now 26 and have been playing guitar since.
I've never said this in the comments before but you have the best editing of all the channels I watch on RUclips. Everything is just perfect... script, narration, music, and god that editing...
Thanks so much!!! 😊
Beck has always been a special series for me. I was never able to put it into words why it felt so special. Thank you for making this. :)
3 years late, but thank you for this wonderful love-letter to my favorite anime and manga
I watched Beck for the first time in either 2007 or 2008, and it has solidly been my favorite anime ever since. I've been thinking about it again recently, so I went looking for videos and watching this made me cry. It feels way too unknown of a series for how wonderful and heartfelt and just cool it is
I just finished BECK... I fell in love with this anime and I'm really excited to go find the manga
Manga is amazing, listen to the ost whilst reading it.
I watched this show in Canada as a kid, and at the time I was the young kid in a band (drummer), and the show hit me hard. And all these years later I still love the music. I do prefer the english music though, the koyuki voice actor has such a stellar voice, his moon on the water chorus.. chills
My favorite musical anime ever, one of my all-time favourite anime too
I would love to see your take on Paradise Kiss. It really feels like Beck's sister series, trading in music for fashion but keeping youthful passion at its core.
i watched this anime when it had just came out without knowing what i was getting into... and let me tell you, I've been listening to their music and bust in a dance every time is still listen to their soundtrack. I am so grateful to have experienced it.
Beck Mongolian chop squad is one of my personal top favorite anime series. I feel it's one of those always underrated hidden gems you'll find in anime that's get left or goes under the radar underneath the more mainstream popular anime shows that tends to happen at times, I love Beck for so many reasons such as good music in the show as well as the characters and their development of getting better with their music also seeing their whole musical struggles, mishaps, & journey along the way.
One of the few anime who's dub just outshines its sub counterpart in my opinion, mainly in the form of its music. Both Chiba's and Koyuki's singing voice actors just rocked it.
I loved the way that Beck managed to balance some of the shounen elements with just so many small, true moments.
The one that sticks out to me most is a bit in one of the later volumes where Koyuki and Saku listen to a recording of their first concert and both just go "Oh god, we sucked." I have never met an artist who doesn't cringe at their earliest stuff.
And thus, my favorite anime boi has returned to make me add another classic to my list.
I love the little animation you did before and after the ad. This was a great essay with so much appreciation towards Beck- I've always wanted to watch it but never got around to doing that. Now I'm contemplating whether I should read it. Thank you for sharing this video, it rocked ;)
I think this was the anime that resonated with me the most. Perhaps because it deals with topics that are such a big part of both my childhood and adult life: music, coming of age, friendship, girls, creating an identity for yourself, etc. This is in contrast to most fighting-based Shonens that I used to watch. Don't get me wrong, I still like them and get a great sense of nostalgia when I re-watch some scenes, but I feel like Beck somehow penetrated through a much longer stretch of my life. Thanks for the video!
i started watching beck as of recently and finished it a month ago it made me want to get more into music. beck is a great anime and manga as well, its incredibly underrated. honestly tho its a true diamond of the rough and i wish more people would watch/read it so they can see how truly great it is
This is everything I’ve ever wanted to say about this anime since I first saw it in like 2008. As someone who wanted to professionally play music, it was just a story that I instantly connected with. Excellent video, thank you.
One of the first anime I ever saw and one that very deeply shaped who I am today. Absolutely adore this anime and I'm really happy to see someone appreciating it.
This is one of the most beautiful reviews I have ever heard about anything.
This is one show I'd highly recommend the dub for. The cast did a great job and even did their own singing. Plus, it helps to not have to hear the botched English from the original.
I usually never listen to English dub because it always feels weird but Beck is an exception.
GROW THAT HAIR JOE!! beautiful video as always, very happy this project turned out so absolutely visually appealing and a slap of sound back to music i grew up with appreciating.
Beck isn't just a masterpiece, Beck is something different, on it's own level / tier. There are very few, if any, Becks out there. I just want to thank you for doing it the justice that it deserved. Plus tossing in some fun facts about real life bands that i never knew about!
One of (if not my top) favorite anime. I feel that you did an excellent homage to the series here. Thank you.
The BG eyecatches brought back the nostalgia of watching the anime when I was a college student!
prob my fav anime, cus i'm such a music freak and I relate and the dialogue is hilarious and heart felt
There sound is what make me want to learn to play. Though it has left a hole in me. that I been desperately trying to fill. If any one has any band that sound similar to beck please send it my way. Thank you Beyond Ghibil for creating a video that I can give my friends. because every time I recommend this as a must watch anime, they look at the cheep animation, they turn their noise. You perfectly describes the passion this show leaves.
loved this show so much. Damn is this music so inspirational
God dammit you make me cry even if I've never known the work you're talking about!
Fuck dude. That end got me as someone who had dreams of being in a touring band. I'm crying like a child right now.
God I love this show
Deadass the same thing. Read it about 2 months ago, now coming back to this video to see new comments. Its incredible.
I try to re-read beck every year or so, because it's such an important piece of art to me. I yearn for what Beck was in their world, and I hope to one day find people with whom to share in that dream however far it may take us.
Remembering it all, and going through your narration, I am left in tears.
Beck will forever be a piece of the music in me.
I love that you take time to cover classic anime. It feels at times as though I'm being left out because I don't follow the seasonal releases. Your thoughtful and beautifully worded descriptions are going to keep me coming back as long as you do this.
I'm not crying, you're crying... thanks man, now I have a video, relatively spoiler free, that I can send to people when I recommend this master piece. My favorite manga of all time. To me, not hearing the music in it was the secret sauce. That way, as I read the pages, my head would fill in the musical blanks with the magic that the narrative claimed Beck have. Starting with the anime, and then going to the manga, where they transcend their early work, is the way to go. Rock on Beyond Ghibli.
I'm always kind of surprised to stumble on beck content. I didn't knew there was a manga at the moment I started the anime, but I'm glad because I would probably have never experienced how Beck sounded like and can completely relate the experience of hearing the song in my mind as I read.

Some personal suggestions on the musical genre:
* 'Sakamichi no Apollon': coming-of-age, romance anime (haven't read the manga). It's a short and tight story, but it's packed with drama and melancholy vibes.
.
* 'Shori Experience': music, school and a pinch of supernatural manga that follows an english teacher who is haunted by Jimmy Hendrix spirit and has to become a legend before she gets 27 or die. Solid premise, good art and still being published (14 vol so far).
I watched this for the first time when I was 16 in 2010 and it changed my life. now 11 years later I'm rewatching it and still love it dearly. Because of it I am still a (sometimes) working musician
Honestly, this video should have had a lot more views
This is a very well put review, analysis and documentary of sorts for Beck. I'm very happy to watch a really nice and in depth tribute for Beck. Well researched, and I love the part showing references from the rock scene. The voice over is pleasant and very professional. I love the manga, anime, and even the movie. I like that each adaptation has its own share of creative effort to convey Harold Sakuishi's creation.
Thank you for making a piece on Beck. It's been such a long time since I have read the manga and watched the anime. I love the songs in the anime especially 'Moon on the Water'. I had downloaded all the songs and sing along with them. A masterpiece of a story.
Thank you for this. Seriously. It makes me so happy that there is still love for this. BECK carries a special place in my heart and a personal connection.
I’m 26 years old, only recently I have discovered this anime. One thing is showed me was it’s possible. To make music that connects deeply and rocks out. I always wanted to be a rock star. I’m 13 years deep, growing my hair out and now I’m going to piece together to world great band from the amazing pool of talent in my home town of Spartanburg South Carolina
I'm so glad I came across your video.
I first watched Beck when I was 13 years old and it instantly became one of my favorite anime, since I've always been passionate about music and having a band was (still is) a dream of mine.
I used to have this sort of tradition to watch it again once a year for a while, it was my "comfort anime", until I eventually stopped. I kept telling myself I would only read the manga if it ever got published in my country... That never happened.
However, your video made me feel like watching the anime again and finally reading the manga (online).
Thanks to your passionate review of this masterpiece, I am now subscribed to you. 😊
I read Beck years ago and even tho I never finished it it made me feel so much, watching this video made me feel those emotions again so thank you. I think I owe myself a reread and to finish it this time, it is such a great manga.
I think you are undoubtedly the best content creator I am subscribed to. No matter what your topic, the story you tell has me engrossed. I chanced across your channel when I first started watching anime and now I am an avid fan. You have given me an appreciation for the anime I watch that I feel I would not otherwise have. So... Thank you. Thank you very much.
I have never cried as much as I did whilst reading Becks last 15 chapters then any other manga or story... This is something special.
The shot of Eddie standing behind Koyuki always gets me man 🥲
commenting 4 years later because more people need to see this. beck is so special to me there was so many moments in this video where i almost cried. and i still feel like crying now. I've loved the anime and manga for so long I can't believe I missed this but I'm glad i still search beck mongolian chop squad on RUclips every now and then so I could watch it now.
This channel doesn't get the recognition it deserves. And thanks again for making me feel nostalgic about a work I have love for, because it's going to be plaguing my mind for the rest of the day.
This Animé gives me tears…..
I remember coming across a couple random episodes. They've always had a specific spot in my brain
I love how you incorporated the feelings of the reader or watcher of the anime in this video through their journey with the band whose tunes will ring on long after the last page or pane.
Just wonderful. Thank you for all your hard work.
I loved this anime...this takes me back
It's nice to gain the broader context of music in Japan at the time too
Thanks
One of my top 5 for sure.
Incredible as usual, you never fail to amaze me, your content is amazing!
Your videos always makes me warm and happy. Thx my guy.
I'm always captivated by your videos, glued to the screen from beginning to end :)
One of my favorite series, awesome video. Thank you
magnificent, its been wonderful to watch you yourself grow as an artist through your videos, thank you for doing what you do.
Another one that I watched on your recommendation, and well worth the time. Thank you again!
Your videos are just top tier. I love you :)
I haven't watched this video when it first came out. i just watched the thumbnail title and directly watch the full Beck series and finally now i am here
I can't believe the amount of references to other videos you compiled in the beginning. I have to bookmark the video for later, I want to go through all of them carefully.
And I'm also super happy someone does Beck some justice, this serie is criminally underrated. I read the manga when I was 14 and it made me discover most of the rock music I still listen to today
this needs more views! Great content!
Glad to see you back man!
I could listen to your voice whole day and won't get bored with it. Great narration with great editing. Keep it up. Looking up for your videos in the future.
I'm watching it at the moment. Thanks for sharing ❤
thank-you for the video, I love this anime since it came out and I'm glad to see that i'm not alone to feel it that way. You Rock
Love beck and this video is awesome! Thank you
Great video dude!
Beautiful round up
Far and away the best anime review site I've seen.
I'd never heard of Beck before yesterday. I'm most of the way thru subbed version.
Certainly in my top 5 anime now.
Finished the manga yesterday (as suggested, start at chap 34). Once started, couldn't stop reading. Loved the art, outstanding main characters / development, even secondary chars used to best effect. Plot even more interesting than expected.
Recommended order: anime then sequel of manga.
So glad to hear it works so well! Did you end up stopping the last episode half way through before it starts spoiling stuff or did it not bother you too much?
@@BeyondGhibli
I watched all of 26 but didn't pay too much attention to the 2nd half. I found the manga such a good read that I really forgot about the anime end. I think starting with the anime gave me a much deeper connection to the manga because I'd fallen for the music and seen the characters in action. The development (character and particularly musical) thru the anime were very well done. One of the best parts of the story was the way that total hard-ass Matt looked thru his own issues to see something valuable and important in Koyuki.
I come back to your channel again and again because you review anime that genuinely deserves to be reviewed and, in turn, your reviews are genuinely worthy of your subjects.
Please keep doing what you're doing.
One of the most under appreciated animes ever. It deserves more than a single season.
You make great content, videos, stories... Thank you
This brought so many emotions, I teared up. Thanks.
Thank you for this video. Really.
Ill never stop rewatching this masterpiece of a video
Thank you for making this video sir.
Awesome video! This is one of my favorite anime so Im really happy that you made a video about it. This made my day, thnx man!
