You hit the nail on the head for me. That is why I love Vortex. It is a difficult song to play. And yes Tati is amazing in it but the band is also super impressive. This was written by Vlad, who is an amazing drummer, but also a classically trained pianist. And the way it moves from movement to movement reminds me of a classical piece of music. I love this song, the only really good live performance of it is from Hellfest 2021, done without a live audience due to Covid and first time played live. Hope you loved the show! After listening to the end of your reaction. Eugene's bass work is processed with distortion and helps to fill in the fullness of the guitar. So sometimes what you think is guitar is actually guitar and bass.
I saw them live in a small bar in upstate NY and they came out for an encore with this song and absolutely nailed it. I was expecting at least a little bit of slop to show they’re human. But now i’m not convinced they are lol
I am sure you enjoyed the concert last night! This compositional and technical masterpiece of music got me on the hook with Jinjer. Prog metal at it's best. Vlad's Jazz drumming is something I am used to from my lifetime favourite bands like King Crimson. The string work is intricate, Roman and Eugene perfectly match and complement at the same time. While I have no connection to growling, Tati's use of it and her singing approach as a whole id rather lead instrument, like guitar clean and guitar fuzz. Perfect song in Metal and Prog genre, even outperforming Tool's and SOAD's masterworks. Second masterpiece on this record Wallflowers is Wallflower. If you don't mind videos, do the lyrics only audio version. The lyrics are magic. Looking forward for more of your straight and honest reactions even if you already might have heard some of the material once at a concert gig in Toronto 😂
I'm glad you made that King Crimson comparison. Vlad is a prog innovator like a Bill Bruford. Roman is almost as out there as Fripp or Belew in his own way. Eugene is a beast. They also remind me of Rush in some ways. They push the boundaries while incorporating melodic, almost poppy elements to keep it grounded and pull it back to something more familiar. At once experimental and headbanging. I love all of it!
@@ericpeterson7512 I hear the Rush connection by means of structural similarities as well. Roman's use of guitar textures is very Alex, while the interplay of Roman and Eugene has a lot of resemblance for me compared to Alex and Geddy. Not being a Rush expert or lover, just from Pictures to Fire is the stuff I like. However, see this clearly as well - whilst assuming nobody of Jinjer has ever listened to Rush
@@frankh9600I'm with you 100% on the Rush comparison. I'm no expert, but I did see them 36x in concert between '78 and 2015, and I can totally see the parallels. The way Alex was part of the rhythm section reminds me of Roman's synchrony with Eugene and Vlad. Eugene's sound is part of the guitar sound. It's awesome!
I love that the guitar evolves constantly over the first half of the song. As to the role of the vocals, the guys compose the music first, then hand off demo recordings to Tati who finds inspiration for titles and lyrics, and weaves her vocal composition into the music. Progressing from being a Jinjer fan for Tati's vocals to having a more balanced enjoyment of their music is a common journey. I agree that Vortex is one of the strongest musically, on the other side of that the few where the music doesn't quite do it for me (on the other hand, I see people commenting that those are their favorite songs so I can't really call them _bad_), Tati's vocals can rescue them because she's building on that foundation.
5:02 - It must've taken them a very long time to get it right to play live because this song is a sequence of different parts that are never repeated again. They basically had to memorise each part and each transition independently, then put everything together and hope that no one forgets what part comes next. 😄
Since you’ve been really liking Jinjer, I would suggest reacting to my favorite song by them “Home Back”. I know you don’t care much for music videos but their video for this song is a must, it really coveys the message of the song.
I've seen a lot of music from a broad spectrum of genres that has moved me in various good ways but, when I discovered jinjer five years ago, i discovered something very, very special. I've seen nothing like them, esp in the metal genre (where I totally roam). This is a once in a lifetime experience...but you get to enjoy it every day.
That’s why I love music and finding new bands. When you find a band that you love, like you said it’s like a once in a lifetime experience that you get to listen to every day!
The “Superfecta” of Hard Rock and Metal: Band-Maid / The Warning, and Jinjer / Lovebites -- all pushing their core genres into the next realm! 🤘 🤘 🤘🤘 Thx, Ashlena!
Love this song, since I am a bassist I am obviously biased, just love the progressive bass riffs and slapping ^^ everything else is a blast as well :) it just shows that they are more then just metalcore.
As you said " it sounds like it is super hard to play". Yes absolutely, it sounds chaotic and it also feels chaotic when you play it which makes it very hard to perform. The great thing about it is that you don't get tired of chaos. You can listen to it hundreds of times and it won't feel like it is getting repetitive. Even the other way around, the more you listen to it the better it will sound. I think metal music is like red whine. You really have to have a sophisticated taste to be able to enjoy it, but if you get it you will be amazed by every well made song. Now, i don't drink red whine and i would probably thing that even the very expensive ones thaste disgusting and bitter but if you are able to taste the details and the aroma then it probably is an amazing experience. Same with metal music. Hidden melodies, polyrhythm on the drums and harsh vocals are all incredibly hard to detect and even harder to create, but it feels nice if you can hear it and keep up with it . They are all masters of their craft.
Great reaction, liked and subbed. You're like me--i discovered Jinjer last year, fell in love instantly, and was fortunate to snag a ticket to see them live just a couple weeks later, before I knew many of their songs yet. I was blown away live, and that sealed the deal for me. They're my favorite band now, and that's saying a lot. I just saw them again a couple weeks ago. I'm officially obsessed. Never liked harsh vocals much before Tatiana. I'm a "mature" professional bassist and singer and long time metal fan. I've seen a lot of metal bands live. These guys caught me from out of left field with their potent mix of genres, and their pure polished passion. They're insanely tight live. I hope you enjoyed the show as much I did. Their material is complex and layered and varied and challenging. The lyrics are poetic, deep and thought provoking. The individual musicians are super talented, cutting edge. Tatiana is a goddess, a superhero of metal, with her mild-mannered alter ego transforming into the beastly Captain Metal onstage. It's a deep rabbit hole, lots of songs that reward intense analysis and study. Classical-level compositions, really. And they just kick ass live!
What’s funny is, when I started checking out songs other than “Pisces”, I watched the concept videos for this as well as “Judgment and Punishment”, “I Speak Astronomy”, “Retrospection”, and “Wallflowers.” I just didn’t get into them. I think part of it was they were a bit distracting from the song.
Can I throw this out.. it's problably off the beaten track for most. But it would be cool to see your reaction to "Igorr" is the band "himalaya massive ritual recording" is the youtube video of them recording the song... yes there is singing innit too :)
Hi, dear Ashlena ! Once again, a very nice reaction to a great Jinjer song... Normally, I am quite good at figuring out the measure in a song... but here, I had - and STILL have - my difficulties, since they seem to change it several times during the song... so if anyone knows in what measure(s) this song is,, please let me know. It's definitely not 4/4 all the time, just dsuring the refrain, other than that, I thought it was 5/8, then 7/8, then 9/8... but it never is a straight forward 4/4 measure during the stanzas and the bridges. And Ashlena, although I know you are not caring pretty much about music videos, I must say that I am very impressed with the canera work and also with the spoecial effects, especially at the end of the song, when everything seemed to be sucked in by a black hole.... Anyway, thanks for reacting to this great Jinjer song and have fun at the concert ! Best wishes from your fan Gerry
This isn't one of my favorites from them. The drums are amazing, though. Vlad is a perpetually underrated drummer. Couple interesting tidbits about him. He's the only one with any formal music training, and that training is in the form of classical piano. He also didn't learn the drums until much later in life. Also, he's a right handed drummer and plays open...Meaning he doesn't cross to play his high hat (usually much more difficult pattern) with his dominant hand, like you'll see a lot of players do. So, he's probably pretty darn close ambidextrous. All in all he's turned into a fantastic drummer.
Since your not a huge fan of music vids. Perhaps the live performance of "Pit of Consiousness" Live in Kyiv is more to your liking. One of their best shows.
Tatie is the best front person in the world! 🤘
Have fun at the show
Had a blast
Jinjer doing Jinjer things! I love how they completely ignore standard song structures, no verse chorus verse here! I hope you enjoyed the show!
Every member of Jinjer is an exceptional musician. Hope you enjoyed the show.
Listen to "Pit of Consciousness" live in Kiev.
Jinjer is a progressive jazz band, at least on some days.
I would never of thought of that lol
