I read an archaeological magazine about 25 years ago before most people had even heard of the Taliban. The magazine ran an article on the destruction of ancient sites by a tribe called the Taliban. I thought that a better idea would be to preserve such places and use them for tourist purposes eventually. Tourism is big business in many places that have ancient ruins etc.
I agree with your point. I was reading about this monument destruction recently and found out that when US invaded Afghanistan and killed many civilians, nobody was providing medical aid for injured civilians during US invasion and during same time US sent people to preserve that monument. Civilians looked it as a unliving stone monument is more valuable than living human being and as a protest Taliban destroyed it

Hi Callum. There's an article from an interview with a Taliban spokesman, and published in the New York Times on March 19, 2001 titled "Taliban Explains Buddha Demolition". Basically, there was an organization who wanted to do maintenance work on the Buddhas due to damage from rain and whatnot. The Taliban said they had been sanctioned and also wanted money to go to the poor, as a few hundred children died each week due to malnutrition. The Taliban had felt betrayed because its members had fought against the Soviet Union and were subsequently thrown under the bus by their ally, the USA. So they saw aid to the Buddhas as the West valuing stones over humans and in spite, destroyed the statues. I think if the West had taken different policies, the Taliban would not have destroyed them. But for this reason, I supported them in destroying the statues.
I believe that article was a lie but each to their own and it’s all a game of opinions. The locals of Bamyan are still embarrassed and ashamed that this was destroyed. Some taliban members feel the same way too, they are just too scared to speak out publicly.
