But reading Hana's story was so boring and tedius, he was nothing was i expected him to be. this was a very informative video, from your side !!
Thanks so much! Yeah the sequels are definitely a different beast to the original and Hana a vastly different character to Yoh. Will be really interesting to see where they end up going
I've seen this sort of thing before, this paradox of omnipotence defeating yourself. To those unfamiliar with Marvel Comics (not to be confused with the movies, which were far more concerned with resolving their own plotlines than representing their source material... and even that's being fairly generous...), this is essentially what undoes Thanos in the original Infinity Gauntlet story. I really like stories like this that depict power levels having some sort of Uncanny-Valley-like effect on your mind. That point where you become so powerful that you realize power is pointless, or that you don't deserve it, or the most rational use of irresistible force is to not use it at all. To pull from another western comic book villain, Lex Luthor, he had the following to say upon temporarily receiving the powers of Superman: "It's so obvious. I can actually *see* and hear and feel and taste it and... the fundamental forces are yoked by a single thought. [...] I can actually see the machinery and wire connecting and separating everything since it all began. This is how *he* sees all the time, every day. Like it's all just us, in here, together. And we're all we've got." One of the few things that can give me hope about the species is that some guy on the other side of the planet could come to the same conclusions about these kinds of universal truths. No one owns these ideas. No one invented them. We just find them at our own pace... or succumb in the attempt.
I want to congratulate and say thanks for this SK content I remember a time the only shaman king videos on RUclips were Spanish analysis and 7-8 year old low quality Japanese half episodes and two openings (English and Japanese) Literally NOTHING in English, no analysis, no explained, no “how much this anime/manga means to me” vids Thanks man
Loved everything from this series. But you can't please everyone so I'll leave my only concern: during the Osorezan Revoir arc it was implied that Yoh would someday meet with Matamune again. And that didn't happen. Haven't read the sequels tho.
It is fucking criminal how little attention your videos get for how well written and constructed they are. I highly recommend encouraging friends with mutual interests to share them in whatever communities they're in online.
@@SeaGee I mean, reddit and discords are the butt of a lot of jokes for a reason but they are really good tools for self-promotion if you make quality content. I'd look into some of those communities if I were you because your shit is really the full package and I don't think you'd be wrong to go somewhere and be like "look what I made"
I don't mind the ending except for the fact that Matamune's story was not really resolved. I would be totally satisfied if it had ended at the mountain story arc, but they did tease that Yoh would resurrect/meet him again. And the fact that Amidamarugot short handed as I feel their relationship was one of the most important things in the story. Does somebody know if Matamune's was shorthanded because of the cancellation. The anime made it seem like his absence was a clear choice made by the author.
I love the ending The final villain in all shounens is usually a god, and usually the main cast get powered up to that godly level, to defeat that god, Shaman king is no different, except it is subtly, whereas in normal shounens that godly status is achieved through an individual's hard work, and Shaman king, the powers come from collective work, and by the end it's still not enough, so the conflict has to be resolved with negotiations and compromise. The fact that conflict isn't solved by force, just delayed by it (hao being killed, and then revived), and it's resolved by negotiations instead is what makes the ending good for me, also seeing the entire cast again sweetens it even more
Got to take into account the series was basically canceled and given a quick ending. We were lucky that they gave him anther chance to give us more of a real ending and an opportunity to show more content was coming. I'm so excited for the new anime and really hope the last arc gets fully fleshed out and we see those great fights get animated leading to the ending with Hao.
100% Really glad Takei got to come back and end it on his terms. I really hope the anime nails those final patch battles. Especially Kalim's battle with Horo!
So I finally Read shaman king (which if you have amazon prime, it's all free you should do that right away) and yeah the ending just felt like it was going 200MPH and the brakes broke off, it never stopped even when it should have been explaining some things. I was very sour on all the Horohoro stuff, like you said it was introduced and resolved in the span of 10 pages.
Never finished the manga but I did get far in and liked the series. I’m sure the 2021 series will incorporate the side stories in the main one. I get the vibe that it’s going to be treated with love for the fans
I really loved the ending! Your criticisms are 100% fair, and I definitely think it could be better! But I love that overall the ending stuck to the themes the series presented from the start. So many shonen series would've just given Yoh so crazy new power up to defeat the "unbeatable" Hao, but I love that SK didn't do that. An OP villain who actually doesn't get beat. I love that! From the very beginning Yoh beat his enemies by fixing their heart/spirit, so it was fitting he would do the same with Hao. I really think Shaman King is a beautiful story. Great video! P.S. While Takei's art was always incredible, my lord he went BANANAS with some of those panels in the KZB edition. That man is endlessly talented.
Thanks Tyler! I do really like that Yoh stayed true to the saving people's heart style and didn't just anime magic his way to a win. Also yes! That half body shot of Amidamaru near the ending? Holy Moly, Takei nails his art!
"Fixing their heart/spirit" hmmm..sounds ..familiar.....like Talk no Jutsu. I'm sorry but that route isn't much better then a power up. An almighty god swayed by the words and actions of the protagonist. It's just the execution that matters. Preferably, would rather get Hao get beat physically into the ground.
@@SeaGee You don't need the sequels. The original already implied that the great leaders who have changed the world have all been previous Shaman Kings, including Jesus. So yes, he did win the Shaman fight.
I feel some of the problems with the ending are justified by context and how it was so rushed. I wonder how the series would have ended if it had enough time to fully develop.
That's what I'm so excited to go through the sequels for! To see what other ideas Takei has for the series but didn't have space to do in the original series
Yeah the ending does too. Good ending for him but sadly not given a lot of importance in those final chapters. Which is disappointing for a fan favourite
If you're just venting, then I apologize (not trying to be condescending), but if you're looking for the real answer it's because the anime was being produced while the manga was and it caught up to it. The decision was made (according to the director) by Shueisha to have the anime come up with an original ending to continue. Funny enough the director of the original anime is also the director of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime, so it happened to him twice! He didn't want to change endings, but it wasn't up to him. Thankfully just like FMA got Brotherhood, Shaman King will get it's reboot! And thankfully these days most anime follow the seasonal format so they never get too caught up to the manga and don't have a ton of filler either! But yeah, I agree that a good general rule is if you want the "purest" story, always read the manga! Cheers!
Likewise! I think there was also a matter of trying to wrap it all up in a nice clean 300 chapter count

@@SeaGee Yea, i thought the same. I was hoping that the adaptation would leave more room and creative freedom for the creators, but if they wanna adapt the whole manga into 60 episodes (that´s what Ive been seeing so far) I ´m just hopping the finale won´t end up on the chopping block
@ Yeah 60 episodes seems tight for the whole series. Especially considering the 2001 adaptation was 64 episodes using only half the source material. Fingers crossed that the creators can make it work
Kind of disappointed you glanced over Faust's ending, though the story itself glanced over Faust so I can't really blame you. Nice analysis by the way.
Faust is such a good character that sadly gets a bit shafted in the ending. Besides a short fight with Radim, he is really only there to be a revive machine for the rest of the gang. It makes sense in the story but I'm disappointed too that such a fan favourite character didn't get the chance to do some more

You know what now that you mention it Ryo’s story about his “best place” does seem kinda hollow. I know that it’s the complete opposite theme of SK to be materialistic but I still wished he actually found a tangible place.
You know, I really dig that other patch guy. The one with the bazooka, god what was his name again? Meh, I'll remember eventually. After all, things will work out in the end ^^
i did end up spoiling myself horribly with this video, actually, but i was still able to appreciate the ending if anything, it actually helped me enjoy it more, being able to see the payoff of everything going on
Not just the fans. He also had creative differences with the editors and the publishing magazine was rushing him. So he ended it abruptly without it having an ending. Later on he would publish the final chapters in another magazine that gave him a limited number of chapters to end his story so he had to rush the final fights to oblivion to fit everything.
@@erois6190 thank you for clearing that up! From what I remember, I specifically read about the fans wanting the ending and basically rushing him to do it.
@@dina-fj6zl There is an amazing interview published on youtube 10 months ago called Hiroyuki Takei The soul of Shaman King where he goes in depth about his creative process, inspirations, troubles with the series and wanting to prove himself as a mangaka
The Soul of Shaman King video is really good. Would definitely recommend if you're interested in the author's perspectives: ruclips.net/video/zp6_kvcEI_4/видео.html
This is a great video, I want to start reading the manga but I know there is an alternative ending to shaman king. What Chapters do I pick up on shaman king kanzenban?
So Kanzenban is the full series. The main addition from the original release is Chapter 286 onwards which is the full ending. Originally it stopped at 285. There is a few chapters renumbering as well because the original 285 got moved and redone as chapter 295. Besides that, the content itself is the same so read away!
The ending’s content is good, but the pacing is rushed. If, for example, Anna explicitly searched for Hao’s mother and we followed her quest this ending would be easier to digest. Maybe Hao “_knows_ this and subtlety aids her by buffing her onis.
I would have liked to see that too. A few more moments or threads really building towards how this ending goes down. I imagine there was probably some limitations for Takei around coming back to the series and trying to wrap it up by that nice sounding 300th chapter
Hi, I just subscribed. I think that you’ve been really fair in your analysis. I love that. Horohoro’s story does feel rushed and it wasn’t the most impactful, but I’ve let it slide because he’s not the main character and the story doesn’t revolve around him. I think that it could revolve around him more but I’ve accepted it as is. Good job pointing out that the side chapter with Ohachiyo isn’t in the main story because that’s kinda bad. I think Shaman King is better than a lot of mainstream shounen. Can’t wait for the remake with a better designed Chocolove 😅
Hi Neutral, glad to have you here! I agree that I like SK a lot more than other mainstream shounen. It'll be interesting to see if the new anime pulls in some of the extra content to help support the ending. Hopefully that remake puts in all the right kinds of changes!
I still dislike this ending. People complain about Fairy Tail and even Naruto with the friendship and Talk no Jutsu stuff, but this takes it to another level. Not that I don't mind Hao being "saved by love", but I just know people are going to be pissed off at this ending. Good thing about it though is the sequel stuff with the Flower of Maize.
I was 100% in that boat too before taking a deeper dive into the ending. I find Shaman King handles it's "power of friendship" much better than other series (like fairy tail) but that may just be my bias from being a big fan of the series. I do really appreciate that the ending doesn't sour the rest of the series though
@@SeaGee I def. agree Shaman King handles it better than Naruto and Fairy Tail, I prefer the series overall to both anyway. I'm very curious about the Flower of Maize too....Dragon Ball is my favorite series and I hated Super, so I'm excited for a better tourney between gods lol
@SaiyanZ3 I'm excited too! At least we're starting with villains more interesting than Jiren was. Hopefully the other gods will get some establishing time too before it all kicks off
I'm really curious to see how the remake manages the ending and if they'll include any extra bits (e.g. from zero or mappa Douji.) Guess we'll find out next year!
You mention near the end that this ending can be considered average when comparing it to other series you have read. Could you please share the names of some of those series? I am looking for some good stories that do not drop the ball at the end!
Ooo apologies, I meant better than average. But some recommendations? For sure Fernando! For an easy start both Billy Bat and The Breaker end really well. There's some intro videos on the channel if you're interested. Besides that, I think the JoJos endings are always good if you haven't gone down that rabbit hole! Assassination classroom also ends quite well if you havent read that either. Or if you're after something more episodic, the first three seasons of DICE the webtoon are really strong. It's in its final season currently which I'm actively not reading until it's done. Early DICE is probably my favourite webtoon so definitely recommended
As a Netflix only watcher, spoiled myself horribly, but worth it. Better than hoping for one thing and then getting something else. Personally I wanted to see Ren become the shaman king, or maybe be the one to beat hao then in a moment if self awareness offer up the seat of shaman king to yoh because ren knows himself too well and that he's not well suited for it; or hao killing yohs body to absorb his soul but yohs soul overpowering haos
If you haven't already, you should check out how the 2001 anime ends too. It has a completely different ending that, in part, runs similar to your latter idea. Personally I'm not a huge fan of that ending but it does do some cool stuff
I started getting interested in this series when I saw the reboot of it on netflix. Im a sucker for spoilers and knowing what will happen on the ending, so I've done some research to find out that the original anime and the manga both have different endings to it :,) so im a little confused edit: ok the original anime is also a little different from the reboot :,)
Because the og anime and the manga were running the same time back then, the anime wasn't finished so the og anime took another ending (and another way after the half episodes of the series). 20 years later the reboot is coming to tell us the complete story of the manga, animated. It lacks a bit as far as animations are concerned (it seems like the animations are getting better per episode) BUT it's pretty good and deep. Hope you enjoy it so far 😊
Correct, though the original anime differs pretty wildly from the manga. The anime came out (and finished) when only about half the manga was out so they did their own ending. In the anime, it ends with Yoh cutting Hao down and kind of glossing over the whole "he can resurrect in 500 years" thing. Hope that clears some confusion 👍
Hao spent decades and decades with nothing but hate and contempt in his heart and yet it only takes one talking to from his mommy for him to quit with his master plan lol. Even Undertale made more sense
Correct, flowers ends with Hana and Sakurai still in the Great spirit. the Super Star picks up where that left off and is still being released currently!
Lol i only remembered ages ago the anime ending Hao was godlike but in the cycles of life he was spilt apart and one half of himself was in Yoh. The anime concluded when Hao spirit literal ate the great spirit and became the spirit of fire. Yoh barely managed to defeat Hao thanks to everyone's power.
It's Spiran Scenery from Final Fantasy X. Here's a link if you're keen: ruclips.net/video/Ai841xucDPE/видео.html Final fantasy soundtracks always seem to have some absolute jams on there
I’m going to save this video until I finish the manga. 1 Day edit: I just got to the part (chapter 78-9) where they meet Hao and he fuckin slugs horohoro😂 Day (idk) edit: i am currently on chapter 263
That's fair, I definitely felt the same way for a long time. I get why people don't like the way this series wraps up. To it's credit, I think the series does a good job of setting up Hao as way too strong. He's had 3 lifetimes of learning and fighting which the intense training the main cast get still can't hope to match. So the plan changes to fight his convictions and win. ln the end they don't really "win", just opening Hao enough to buy some time to make a change. It's a hugely different take to how most series like this would wrap up and for me, I think it matches the tone of the rest of the series. Anyways, there'll always be the original anime to see Hao get sliced in half by Yoh!
You mentioning haos mom reminded me of the sage of six paths mom. That made naruto’s ending feel cheap. Almost as if the author wrote himself into a corner.
the problem is not the ending alone though. A lot of the arcs before the ending is equally problematic. I remembered reading that the angels are actually sports cars. Like WTF.
You're right, the angels are straight up transformers. To be super accurate they're angel spirits blended with sports cars. Takei really enjoys drawing what he enjoys and the man loves his cars. I think he just wanted a way to bring some cars in
I dont like the manga ending, it was too complicated and i didnt understand anything. I liked the 2001 anime ending way more. Since i was like 6yrs old at that time, the ending was so cool literally having them beat Hao with the power of the friedship instead of haos mother randomely appears and everything is good without a fight. but maybe i am just too dumb for the manga ending
It's the most boring and unspectacular Ending of all Shonen ever. It was so lame. "Here, forget your Ghosts and take the elements. Oh, and Love is all what you need." I hope the next Gen Shamans will get a better ending.
Oh that's my bad, didn't explain myself well. I find that I enjoy endings less than the general consensus. Not intentionally making myself dislike endings but more that my opinions always seem to be lower than where maybe it should be. I included that comment as more of a disclaimer that apparently I'm tougher on endings than I should be so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But you're right, going in with the expectation to dislike an ending is some hot nonsense!

And we're all we've got."
One of the few things that can give me hope about the species is that some guy on the other side of the planet could come to the same conclusions about these kinds of universal truths. No one owns these ideas. No one invented them. We just find them at our own pace... or succumb in the attempt.
I did not think I would see an All Star Superman quote when looking at the Shaman King finale, I dig it. Love your perspectives Cole, well put mate!
Only those reticent to wield it are truly worthy of obtaining great knowledge/wealth/power/etc.
I want to congratulate and say thanks for this SK content
I remember a time the only shaman king videos on RUclips were Spanish analysis and 7-8 year old low quality Japanese half episodes and two openings (English and Japanese)
Literally NOTHING in English, no analysis, no explained, no “how much this anime/manga means to me” vids
Thanks man
Thanks Alfonso! Glad you're enjoying the content! Just happy to get SK some much needed more play on YT
Thanks so much Kaiji, you're too kind! I don't really have many friends into manga but I'll see what I can do!
@@SeaGee I mean, reddit and discords are the butt of a lot of jokes for a reason but they are really good tools for self-promotion if you make quality content. I'd look into some of those communities if I were you because your shit is really the full package and I don't think you'd be wrong to go somewhere and be like "look what I made"
Cheers man! I'll give it a go with the sequels video once I get that out. Thanks again!
I just finished Shamen king and I needed this, thank you
No worries, I hope you liked the series!
I love the ending
The final villain in all shounens is usually a god, and usually the main cast get powered up to that godly level, to defeat that god, Shaman king is no different, except it is subtly, whereas in normal shounens that godly status is achieved through an individual's hard work, and Shaman king, the powers come from collective work, and by the end it's still not enough, so the conflict has to be resolved with negotiations and compromise.
You a GOAT a man who deserves million subscribers I hate that I discovered your channel so late, Loved your Billy series.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you loved Billy! That's one of my favourite series ever and definitely deserves some more love
Never finished the manga but I did get far in and liked the series. I’m sure the 2021 series will incorporate the side stories in the main one. I get the vibe that it’s going to be treated with love for the fans
I hope so too! That's the kind of fan service I can get behind
Hao: Your Inside Me
Yoh: ....
Yoh: 😮
Hao: "I'm the f***ing shaman king"
@@UnifiedEntity that’s the first thing I thought talk no jutsu😂
Jesus actually takes part in the Shaman tournament
From the look of the sequels, he may have even won a previous Shaman Fight
He did it was in the first chapters
@@SeaGee You don't need the sequels. The original already implied that the great leaders who have changed the world have all been previous Shaman Kings, including Jesus. So yes, he did win the Shaman fight.
I also didn't like how despite the implied importance, Matamunes medium (Yohs necklace) was mostly ignored
Yeah I'd agree with you there. That was something set up that I was waiting to see paid off. Hoping it will show up down the line in the sequels
I feel some of the problems with the ending are justified by context and how it was so rushed. I wonder how the series would have ended if it had enough time to fully develop.
That's what I'm so excited to go through the sequels for! To see what other ideas Takei has for the series but didn't have space to do in the original series
We just gonna gloss over Faust dying and being with Eliza?
Yeah the ending does too. Good ending for him but sadly not given a lot of importance in those final chapters. Which is disappointing for a fan favourite
?wait what?
In any other series this ending would be a huge cop-out, but for Shaman King it feels like the only natural conclusion for this story.
Agreed, very in character for Yoh and the vibe of the series.
Why is the anime so different wth, this is why I read mangas more
If you're just venting, then I apologize (not trying to be condescending), but if you're looking for the real answer it's because the anime was being produced while the manga was and it caught up to it. Cheers!

Fingers crossed that the creators can make it work
Thankyou I just finished and you made the ending more clear
My pleasure Carmel, I'm glad this helped!

It makes sense in the story but I'm disappointed too that such a fan favourite character didn't get the chance to do some more
@@SeaGee Pretty Ironic the necromancer of all people was the only character to not get revived.
@@R0-83-RT I'm still hoping he'll show up outta nowhere in one of the sequels to do something rad. Then again he's with Eliza again now so probably won't see him come back
@@SeaGee I'm just hoping the anime gives him a proper fight in the battle against Team: The Ren and Team: Funbari Hotsprings, instead of instant elimination.
You know what now that you mention it Ryo’s story about his “best place” does seem kinda hollow. I know that it’s the complete opposite theme of SK to be materialistic but I still wished he actually found a tangible place.

Glad this helped let you appreciate the ending more! Shaman King's a great series so I hope you enjoyed the read through
i love the dub that aired on fox kids i should have recorded this show on vhs
I've read somewhere that the writer got annoyed with the fans and just wanted to get it over with. I personally felt like the ending was rushed

I dislike how the ending try so hard to make Hao seem like a sympathetic character and he got away with all his crimes Scott free.
I don't think anyone could do anything to him anyways.
In shaman king flowers,he is still the god
Beautiful!
@@SeaGee Thanks man, I'll check it out.

Love your work
Thanks Billy, glad you're enjoying!
I imagine there was probably some limitations for Takei around coming back to the series and trying to wrap it up by that nice sounding 300th chapter
thank you
great ending
Hopefully the other gods will get some establishing time too before it all kicks off
It’s one they should re animate. I feel like I missed a lot in the English 4kids dub.
Im a sucker for spoilers and knowing what will happen on the ending, so I've done some research to find out that the original anime and the manga both have different endings to it :,) so im a little confused
edit: ok the original anime is also a little different from the reboot :,)
Because the og anime and the manga were running the same time back then, the anime wasn't finished so the og anime took another ending (and another way after the half episodes of the series). 20 years later the reboot is coming to tell us the complete story of the manga, animated.
It lacks a bit as far as animations are concerned (it seems like the animations are getting better per episode) BUT it's pretty good and deep.
Hope you enjoy it so far 😊

Wasn't hao defeated in the ending of anime? I'm confused

The final fantasy soundtracks are such quality
So they do all that fighting/training just to get beat in the end by Yohs prick of a brother.....yeah, not a fan of the ending.
@@SeaGee Very true.

the problem is not the ending alone though.

I think the anime ending is millions times better, they smoke zeke and the tournament ends out of no where and thy get called back to the tournament
Well.. There was a GBA Sequel to the anime if memory serves. it was a oddball.
After finishing the remake of Shaman King, I honestly think the original series is still better.
The ending was pretty disappointing overall.
So you usually don’t like manga endings as a rule of thumb? Talk about dumb.
The anime series sucked
