      I had to chop off my hair (verrrrrrrrry similar but mine is even denser, looks almost identical long, but mine is "wider") once it grew truly long, I just could not figure out how to take care of it. I don't feel so bad now, I can admit I am just not up for the work & planning. I have a "puffball pixie" right now because the last stylist cut the angle wrong and it doesn't want to curl, it wants to make a puff. I'm queer, I'm pretty androgynous, I could easily do a lesbian fauxhawk with what I've got right now, but it's just so much icky gel...

      I let my natural grays grow out and it has been an adventure to say the least. The texture is totally different from my fine, straight hair of my youth. I do only wash once a week but I’m very interested in trying your other methods for working with your texture. I feel like mine is a mix of everything but my biggest foe is frizz. I live in Louisiana and the humidity is insane. Do you leave your hair down at night while sleeping? I currently put mine in a silk scrunchy but maybe that’s not good.

    I do all of these except rule #1. Weekly shampooing just doesn’t work for me. A lot of beauty influencers talk about “training” and after years of trying I can say my hair and scalp have learned nothing 😅 I have a very oily skin type and very fine hair. Even with dry shampoo I can only get to 4 days and it’s looking pretty rough by then. I’m glad I gave up on trying to force a weekly shampoo routine because I feel at peace now and my hair is so much better.

    • @wplants9793
      @wplants9793 Год назад +24

      Same. For me with European sebum rich straight hair, washing 2x a week is a actually a big win. It is better than washing it every day like I did in high school ~ as in it doesn’t strip my hair and make it more greasy.

      @ParticularlyChar Год назад +41

      Agreed. You can train your hair out of being greasy if it’s greasy BECAUSE you’ve overwashed it but if you’re just oily skinned you can’t train it. It just is oily.

  • @meepmoopmeep1
    @meepmoopmeep1 Год назад +129

    One thing to note about frequency of washing:
    Your hair texture and density definitely makes a difference. Even after progressively spacing out washes to “train” the scalp to be less oily, people with thin, fine hair (like me) will still need to wash more regularly. My hair looks so much more full with freshly washed hair. Even after years of trying to space out shampooing, I can’t seem to go past day 4 without looking like Gollum lol

    • @meepmoopmeep1

      But yes this exactly!! thickness and density are absolutely key. I have a dense head of hair so it takes quite a while for my hair to air dry, but the strands themselves are VERY fine so I can't go without at least some help from dry shampoo and a boar brush by day 3.

    • @ghouliegarou

      Yes, my hair is the same way. I spent months trying to "train" it several years back and ended up with all kinds of scalp issues. I just use a very gentle shampoo and conditioner daily instead. The plus side is that I can wear my hair however I want to daily. I don't have to worry about babying the shape or denting it with pins. Everyone's gotta do what works for them!

When I realized that I don't find makeup fun and indeed found that it was causing the problems it claimed to solve (for me), it was so liberating. And cheap! And I think it's incredibly thoughtful and intentional to not mush and smush your hair too early in the week! Like it makes sense not to ruin the shape too early, and save that for later in the week.

    Totally appreciate that this is what works for you and you’re just sharing. However, studies have shown air drying may cause more damage than blow drying with low heat bc length of time of damp hair is correlated to damage. Also, for many people, washing only once a week causes scalp issues and definitely contradicts advice from dermatologists. For many, cleaning their scalp regularly- not just with water is the key to healthy scalp and hair. Also piling on dry shampoo is terrible for the scalp on a daily basis.

    My hair is an enigma to me 😆. I have very fine hair, but a ton of it. It has some natural wave to it and I’ve always been fortunate that it can handle just about any cut because it will just fall nicely. However …. it mystifies me. It will NOT hold a curl when I use heat of any kind. I have tried the lowest settings. No go. The best curls I can get with heat tools is with a flat iron set to the highest setting, which on mine is just under 500. Yes. 500. I know. But even then, the curls won’t last the day. The only thing that works is heatless curling methods (I tend to do a version of the robe tie wrapping method) or putting it up in a few buns overnight. Even on dry hair these methods work for me. Curls and volume for days. Baffling. It also takes ages to dry with a blow dryer, but if I just play with my hair and keep spreading it out with my fingers, it will air dry pretty quickly. I mean, what? Is my hair allergic to heat?!? I can’t go an entire week without shampoo, BUT what I did figure out is that it’s just the front section of my hair that gets super gross, probably because of oils from my face and the fact that I cannot stop fiddling with my bangs. So, I only wash that section when it gets untenable and the rest of my hair is fine. I can’t use dry shampoo. Tried so many. They make the situation 10x worse. They’re like an oil attractor instead of an oil sucker upper on me. Because my hair is so fine, I have to brush it every day or it’s a rats nest of tangles. But I only do it at night. The whole 100 strokes thing. And then I put it up in a bun or do the wrapping thing and overnight it seems my hair absorbs the excess oils and by morning it’s fine. In the morning I only need to lightly de tangle with my fingers and it’s good to go. I don’t use much product in my hair either because none of them work, really. (Again, baffling). Except a texture spray I found that magically does miraculous things for my hair style. It took a long time to get to the point of being able to only wash all of my hair once or nearly once a week. But it’s been worth it. I have way less fall out, my scalp is less irritated, and I can afford to buy really good shampoo because a bottle lasts me so long now. What funny animals we humans are lol. So much fussing with the hair. But getting it right is EVERYTHING!! ❤

All I have to do to revive it is scrunch my hair up of fluff it at the roots a tiny bit and it’s back to being like it was when I styled it. A little goes a long way for me.

    This is a weird one but I clip my hair 1/2 up while it dries (I’ve got fine hair but a lot of it and it takes forever otherwise.) Gets those under layers dry faster and less scalp stress. I could do 8-10 days when I lived in the desert, but now in a more humid place (plus I have a sweaty job), I’m at like 4-6 I think.
    I wish I could avoid hair up for the first half of the week, but for others that can’t- a loose french braid is where it’s at :). Stands up to hiit and handstands and so forth but doesn’t leave you with that single-crease look lol.
    Weirdly new wash never worked for me, even in the desert! I was much happier when I realized what my hair wanted was actual soap, but less often.

    I don’t wash my hair every day, but at least once or twice a week for sure. I don’t like the dirty smell and the limp feeling of dirty hair. People can wash their hair as often or as rarely as they want but…I’m sorry, Hannah, no one can “train their scalp” to produce less oil by not washing it. That isn’t the way the human scalp works at all. As we age, we get less oily. It is possible that, with age, people don’t get as oily as they did when they were younger, but not washing your hair doesn’t make it produce less oil or sebum from the follicle. That just isn’t how the human body works.

    Whether or not you can do the washing once a week thing depends on your hair type. This will generally work for thicker and coarser hair, but this will not work if you have fine hair. I know some curly people who go a week without washes, no problem, but this generally is not going to work for the thin, pin straight hair types

    Been following your hair method for years, though I've never been disciplined enough to manage to get my hair completely dry before bed. I've found that using an air dry mousse right after I wash my hair, helps my texture come up and it forms a slight cast on the hair to keep it lifted and piecey a bit longer. I could never do Nuwash because I color my hair, but I just use a color-safe shampoo that my stylist recommends.

    Dermatologists on youtube have spoken out about this “training your hair” misinformation. Washing too much or too little cannot biologically change the amount of oil your scalp produces, it physically cannot have an effect such as “overproducing oil.” Sebum production is determined solely by your genetics and your hormones. I get that youre trying to be helpful but the info in tip 1 is incorrect. Not washing often enough can actually cause hair loss. THAT BEING SAID I’m glad youve found a routine that works so well for you!

    This has been so helpful! I've always felt a little silly for how careful I am not to handle my hair, lest I disturb my natural texture and wave pattern - the waves seem to fall out as soon as I touch it. Its so reassuring to hear you describe how gentle you are with yours. I especially loved hearing "the ideal version of the hair that I have". That was inspiring :)
    I would love to know how you wear your hair when you sleep? Or if you might have a video touching on this already? My hair sounds very similar to yours, and the only way I've managed to maintain the shape while I sleep is to put it in a loose bun on the very top of my head, secured with a big, fluffy scrunchie. But no matter how gently I try to secure the bun, the weight of having my hair up always leaves my scalp feeling sore by morning.
    Thanks so much, your videos are all so fun and relaxing.

    I did not win the hair genetics lottery lol mine is thinning, oily and prematurely gray with a tendency to develop dandruff. I have tried washing only once a week and it just got so oily and itchy from dandruff that I scratched it until I bled 😅 Its better if I wash every other day and use dry shampoo in-between. However, my hair is that wavy/curly combo that is very suggestible so my go to is similar to yours in that I always air dry, after I wash it I throw some curl cream on the ends, twist it around my fingers and it will air dry in ringlets. That and the shine are the two best things I've got going on with my hair. I never learned how to do anything with my hair as far as styling so once I stopped lamenting the fact I am not a high maintenance girl and ran with a low maintenance style that works for me, thats when I started getting compliments and actually appreciating the hair that I have.

    there are so many factors to one's hair - e.g., hair usually needs to be cared in a different way after dying but it depends on the amount of hair impacted, whether there was any bleaching, were there chemical or physical pigments. then there's a percentage of gray hair, the base tone of natural colour, texture, volume, thin/thickness, seasons, climate, water quality, lifestyle, habits, tools used etc.

    I think not coloring your hair and getting regular trims are the best thing you can do for your haircut.
    Washing is very personal. I have fine, medium density, very curly hair. Oil doesn’t run down my hair easily, even when I distribute it. I let my hair tell me when it’s ready for shampoo by checking to see if it is flat at the root or gunky or snarly. Depends on the season, whether I am indoors or out a lot, sweat level and headgear worn. Could be 3 days or maybe 10.

      I also use a microfiber turban! I think for me the initial "weird and frizzy" phase during dry-down pretty quickly evolves into the piece-y texture that I described in this video. It's like, the frizzy bits take longer to settle down, but they eventually do. If they don't, a very light spritz with Undressed calms them down. Sometimes it *seems* like it's tangled when it's drying down, but it's not actually tangled, and once it's all dry and gotten over itself it all makes sense.

      I use a mister to revitalize my hair. I have thick, coarse hair with a ringlet. I go two weeks usually between washes. I wash my hair in the tub. I use a colour freeze product in silver( I’m mostly a varied grey) and a colour safe conditioner. I leave both products in for 10 minutes. I get my hair “detangled” in abundant water. I usually brush my hair before washing but I’ll sometimes brush my hair before I shower if I need to redistribute oils or fluff it up.
      When I’ve had my hair super short, I wash more frequently and use oils to increase the shine and smoothness of my hair. I’ll use oils on the ends sometimes to increase the texture and separateness of the hair.

My hair is super thick and has just enough wave that i can like you go either straight ish or curly with a little help. However it gets so tangled so easily that i have to use a wet brush and sometimes even use a leave in conditioning mask to detangle it. I dont heat style it ever. I only brush it like 2 to 4 times every couple weeks. I dont blow dry or anything. I basically do a messy bun or a more sleek bun depending on what im doing as well as how close to a wash day it is. The cleaner my hair the sleeker and less textured my buns are.

    With the washing though, I really have to wash every other day. My scalp itches so badly by the day 3. And I have tried many times over the years to switch to less frequent washing. Wearing your hair up super often can also make your scalp feel oilier and you hair feel drier because you aren’t allowing gravity to pull the natural oils down your hair shaft and basically forcing them to stay at your scalp.
    I do still pull my hair up, but not nearly as often as I once did and it’s a total game changer as someone who also only washed their hair about once a week (I wash it when it needs washed, water to remove sweat & other water soluble things, shampoo to remove oil & product buildup).
    I also do not use dry shampoo at all. My scalp does not like it and it makes my hair oilier.

    My mom said when she had long hair she washed it by bending over and throwing her hair over her head. Maybe that would help keep the oils off the rest of your skin so you don’t break out. But I guess it would be forcing your hair in a certain way.
    Right now I only wash my hair about twice a week because honestly I forget to shower. When it’s shoulder length I find I need to wash it more often because the oils travel faster. But I’ll try implementing your brushing and not sleeping with wet hair rules and see how that goes. I feel like my current shampoo is too harsh because I have a lot of dandruff, so I’m going to try switching it up.
