Hannah, I used to hang all my sweaters to get clarity on what I own but in the end hanging them really stretched and misshaped all my beautiful knits. It’s a painful lesson. Better to fold them. Something to keep in mind when you organize your closet.

    • @emmy8526
      @emmy8526 Год назад +9

I find I can get away with hanging knits (if they’re not loosely woven or heavy) by using slightly wider black plastic hangers that come with grey rubber pads on the shoulders. It helps keeps the sweaters from sliding or developing dents. Also good for jackets, blazers and coats. I wouldn’t normally advise buying that much plastic, but I use them year round, they extend the life of my clothes and they’ve lasted well.
Folding sweaters is great, but the creases can limit wearing right off the shelf, and I don’t like ironing anything but thin knits if I can help it as it smooshes the weave, to use a technical term, lol.

You can flip the arms of the sweater up over the shoulders on a good, grippy hanger, and it takes some strain off of the sholder seams. Heavier cotton and thinner wool knits will still probably stretch out over time but if they are worn a lot it doesn't cause a lot of issues for me.

Oh my… I do that too! When I want to put myself into debt buying wonderfully beautiful clothes I reorganize my closet. I have lost 70lbs since July so my collection of lovely pieces has been edited several times recently. Whenever I see things online that I must have or I’ll perish from wanting, I reorganize. It helps me remember that I have a beautiful wardrobe. I have wonderful fancy clothes, soft comfy casuals, and very smart business attire. Not to mention a luxurious robe and slippers and a robust collection of pajamas and lounge wear. Undergarments so dainty and sexy that any woman would would feel blessed. That’s how I remind myself that I do not want to spend.

This is actually a really brilliant video for me to have watched. Thank you Hannah.
I have actual big holes in my wardrobe. I know they exist and they genuinely make it hard for me to effectively use the clothes I have sometimes. What I’ve desperately needed to do for a while was to wash everything and go drawer by drawer and aggressively purge. Not to get rid of the stuff I love, but to expose the gaps so I can make a list of the stuff that actually does need replaced and start doing research on replacements so that I am making measured, budgeted, sensible monetary decisions.
I am now inspired. Thank you Hannah.

I’m not sure if you’ve been working from home for a while or not but I’ve had that same confusion when I’ve dealt with new situations.
What helps me is to think about what I am actually looking for. What purpose it will serve (that things I already have wouldn’t) and how can I maximize itsb usefulness to me. Really take your time and consider it in the context of the wardrobe you already have and the occasions you regularly feel that gap.
I like to have a small wardrobe full of carefully curated pieces that are exactly what I want them to be, sometimes that means some of them are relatively expensive so I feel you there.
Right now my issue is that I went through a significant life change over the past couple years and I worry that I will need the pieces in my wardrobe that now do not serve me. So they have stuck around and cluttered everything up.

    • @faerynnnn
      @faerynnnn Год назад +8

I don't know if y'all will see this or not, but a shift in approach to this process that has REALLY helped me, is that instead of going through my wardrobe looking for pieces I don't wear/am ready to part with, I go through and pull out all of my absolute FAVORITE items that I wear regularly, and put those aside as "keeps," and everything else is up for getting chopped.
I found it sooo helpful because it helped me move from "well I maybe I can be the person who wears this" to "I am a person who wears these."
It was also really helpful because then I could see what I gravitated to naturally, and the things I wore consistently. That made it so much easier to make choices about what pieces to add in the future, because I knew 1) if it went with a bunch of those things it would be easy to incorporate, and 2) if I own and love something that fits in a similar way/makes me feel a similar way, I will most likely wear that item a lot too.

Hi Hannah, I can totally relate to your love for knits. I am a knitter and always struggle with buying wool in sweater quantities (because I can buy faster than I can knit and NEED). But I have one tip for you regarding extending the longevity of your sweaters. Especially big knits like oversized sweaters can stretch out over time, when left hanging. The weight of the wool stretches out the stitches at the shoulder and neckline. You can use it for your advantage, if a sweater is too short, otherwise it's better to store them laying with a lavender sachet (moths 🦗). Greetings from Germany, Ingrid

And also, wool does need more frequent cleanings. I had a beautiful wool sweater when I was younger and I didn’t wash it before I put it away for the warmer seasons. When I pulled it out in the Fall the wool had basically rotted in the armpit areas. It was ruined.

    • @naomifarlow5220

You are both right actually. Wool doesn't need to be washed with every wear, especially if it wasn't worn next to skin, as it has self cleaning properties. However you must always wash wool before it is stored. Unwashed stored wool can suffer damage and attract pests. I hope this helps.

I had Christmas money to burn and more time on my hands because I was off work for about 10 days, reading every single night before bed for a few hours. Which is WAY more than I used to read, embarrassingly. But then when I got home from my vacation, I wanted to buy more books. Suddenly I was reading book reviews and watching Booktube and looking for books to actively want. I was planning bookstore trips that I couldn't afford in my budget even if I got them secondhand. I was planning on asking for nothing but books for my birthday. And I had my lightbulb moment, just go to the effing library and get a library card, duh. With washing knitwear, if your washing machine has a spin only (not rinse and spin) cycle, I really recommend using it after washing to significantly reduce the drying time, whether you wash the garment by hand or in the washing machine. Use the setting with highest number of spins, so it is more like a centrifuge, and will spin out lots of the water. After that lay it out flat to dry in shape as normal.
I was skeptical to try it, but a lot of big knitwear designers recommend it (I'm a knitter), and it's been a game-changer for me!

this video just explained to me why i collect makeup like how i used to collect fountain pens in school where I wasn't allowed to wear makeup, and now mostly see makeup as tools rather than something I have to own to participate in the "beauty" realm! Knowing that bit of history about what makes childhood me happy will serve me well as i tried to edit down my collections of makeup, clothes i own and strop buying more. I did this with my eyeshadow palettes and my sweatshirts. I went and organized what I have and instinctively talk myself out of the desire of more, so now is what I do, re- organize and look what I own before i shop. Perfume is something else I keep telling myself why? No! Is not like I will wear it, doesn’t go with who I am and it is just an idea in my head of this person I could be. So is a hard one that keeps popping back.

Very relatable! I have a few of those things:
    - Jeans: I had to go through my collection just last weekend to declutter and reorganise to stop myself from wanting more. I REALLY have enough
    - Lipstick. I love lipsticks but the range of colours that suit me is limited and I am very well stocked. No need for the 20th dark rosy nude lipstick.
    - Golden Goose trainers: That's the worst one because they are so expensive. I am totally not a designer brand person but those just fit my style so perfectly. I have 3 pairs and 1 on the wishlist. I always save for them and let it marinate for months until I break down again. I love all pairs I have very much and cherish them. Wearing them makes me happy, but 3 is really enough, isn't it 👀?

Excellent talk, Hannah, and congrats on overcoming those inclinations to buy. My problem is sewing patterns and, to a lesser extent, fabric. You are so correct about taking stock of current inventory of the item we want to buy! Every time I reorganize my patterns I remind myself that I don’t need anymore. Well, there was a pattern sale a few days ago and I managed to resist buying a dress pattern I was visualizing sewing and wearing (beautifully, of course). As I was driving in the neighborhood of the pattern sale, I talked to myself out loud about all the other patterns I want to sew that I already own, and also reminded myself that I have several unfinished projects at the moment, needing my attention more than this new dress pattern. I also remembered what the told myself the last time I reorganized my patterns... I have enough for two lifetimes! The urge to buy another pattern did pass after considering these things. As I write this I even feel relieved that I don’t have yet another one to file away.
The marketers of beautiful items are skilled at their jobs! Thank you for helping us develop our skills of resistance! I love the default “no” ... I will use it!!

(AKA daily wear clothing becomes lounge clothing becomes sleep clothing becomes cleaning gross things clothing.) I struggle to just bite the bullet and finally toss an item of clothing once it has gone through every stage of wearability. It clutters up my wardrobe and I’m overwhelmed by the clothing I own. Hearing your advice about getting rid of the super ratty items so you can fully appreciate the nice things you have to wear was super helpful to hear. I feel so seen in this video. I tend to fall down the rabbit hole for each new hobby. I am sadly one of those for whom a 10 bottle ink collection is a dream of minimalism. And I have enough Tomoe River paper notebooks to last me till 2030, and I have to fight daily the urge to get more notebooks, more planners, more fountain pens. I've had my makeup collections grow completely out of hand, and when I fell down the indie nail polish well, I fell hard. Nail polish cases in the storage room hard.

Hannah Louise, thank you so much for beautifully covering this type of content! I purchased a pair of boots in the sales, from a brand I'd been coveting for over a year. The thing is, although the boots were SUCH a good discount, they weren't the exact style I wanted. In fact I'd justified even dreaming of this brand of boots because they would be a long, long term practical investment piece. However, the style I bought had a suede detail which I totally knew wouldn't stand up long term to the elements but I bought 'em anyway...only the transaction was cancelled because they ran out of stock and couldn't fulfil the order (not the brand's fault but the stockist). So I was serendipitously saved from myself - but your video here has armed me for the future when the fates may be less benevolent!

I love Ugg boots and I also love a pale olive color. This year the company came out w/pale olive Ugg boots for $170. I wanted them so bad and I still do, even though I own 3 other pairs. What I did to talk myself out of purchasing them, was to look in my closet at all of my clothes & the outfits I put together and see if I would choose the olive color Uggs or my black, gray or brown Uggs. My conclusion was that even if I would pull out the olive color, my gray, black or brown Uggs would match just as good & maybe even better. I still want them, but I don’t want to have to spend that much money right now. I have this quirk about me, that when I like something a lot, I want all the colors. I totally understand u Hannah. I always justified these purchases as ok because I'm supporting small local artists- but I am really trying to cut back on them this year. Last weekend when I got the urge to scroll and shop I instead looked at all the art I had that I hadn't put up yet (need to find a frame, haven't decided on where it'll go, forgotten about it etc), the frames I'd collected from charity shops, and what was already on the walls. I spent the whole day changing what was in which frame, deciding to hang some stuff with washi tape just to get it up, and basically re-curating all of the art around my home. It was so much fun and I feel so happy I'm the space now!! The prices I'd gotten used to feel fresh and new in new spaces and frames and I'm so glad I finally got up some bits I've had put away for ages

I think laundry is big especially for a minimal wardrobe. We own a huge washing machine as it is the most sustainable one regarding environment and energy costs. So we "need" a lot of dirty items to fill it and justify using it. I learned to compromise on my outfits and to rewear clothes (after I hang them in the dampy bathroom or spotclean them). I do handwash my bras as they are delicate (silks, lace ...) therefore I do not need a lot of them.

I want to decorate the tops of bookshelves with my pitchers collection in the future! But right now I live in a tiny apartment with a wild toddler so they wouldn't fit and would certainly break. I have to remind myself of that every time I see a pitcher. With the cookware, I have already invested in GREAT cookware. I love everything I have and don't really need anything else. Which usually also means I have to wait a while until I can even consider buying the quality I want. I just replaced some bras. I have not purchased bras in several years and the ones I had (and I had about 6) were all well worn and starting to not shape me/fit in a comfortable way as they were stretched out. I decided I only need 3 bras (with my weekly laundry routine) and looked online for neutral colors that would match my skintone so they could go under any color including sheer or white tops. I have since purchased and received my new bras and out of the 3 only one of them is not exactly what I hoped but I can still make it work. The old bras I got rid of and I have to say my drawer looks so pretty now when I open it up and the lovely new bras are laid out there waiting for me, and I know I can get thru the day without having to adjust and fidget with my bra! I appreciate that you took into account how many you had in total and realized you didn't need any. I too always think I need another Babaa same style different color but I’m holding strong like you and trying to thoroughly enjoy what I’ve already acquired. I did the same thing as you with Babaa about 5 years back when I discovered the Tradlands brand of button down flannel and cotton shirts. They are beautifully well made pieces (think double top stitching and an extra buttonhole to prevent that dreaded gape). Once my first shirt arrived I was so completely smitten I acquired roughly 8 shirts in different fabrics and sleeve length but finally had to put the brakes on when I realized I may have overdone it. I absolutely do not regret a single purchase but enough really is enough and these well made shirts truly will last a lifetime. Here’s to adding beauty and functionality to our lives in a conscious and intentional manner in 2023 and beyond! Looking forward to more great content Hannah! Cheers!! ❤

Buying less..... I'm doing meh so far. Luckily most of the stuff I want is actually very affordable, like the new e.l.f. color corrector. I was like, why am I beating myself up about $4? I realized, it's more about knowing that the L.A.Girl color corrector I already have could last me literally another year, maybe even two! That is something frustrating about makeup. Most products last sooooo long, it's like you feel sentenced to avoid buying anything else because what you already have could last so long. And usually it's not considered a DOWNSIDE to get a long usage period out of the products you buy, but there's something about it that's oddly toxic in a way I can't quite sum up. You are just left with a nagging knowing that you don't NEED more of what you have, yet you want to try different brands and formulas, and have the FUN of buying something that is a hobby of yours.

I might have been able to bleach it effectively, but it wasn’t a white initially and I wasn’t going for a white look. Just word to the wise for the cotton cardigans in that color-that you will definitely have to wash at some point because the light color will get dirty. Because of my new year's goals to read and exercise more I'm very tempted to buy books and activewear at the moment... I already have almost 50 unread books on my shelf so I def do not need more! But I did allow myself to restock my shampoo and buy a tote bag (which I'd been eyeing for 2+ months and was on sale). Skincare is also an eternal temptation... sorting through and reorganising all of my skincare definitely helps curb the craving for more. I've made a big wishlist excel sheet, I find plugging things into the wishlist and waiting does help the initial flare of excitement settle down. Tbh most of the things I put on my wishlist I end up forgetting about, and if they stick around in my mind, then they tend to be worth buying

Plus having the prices lets me see the total cost, which is so helpful because I can look at it and be like, do I actually want to spend $2000 on lipstick? Maybe not! I really appreciate hearing the process of becoming truly self-aware in the shopping dept. I spent too much on eyeshadow palettes last year, before really examining why. I realized I had a picture in my mind of my "perfect palette" and that I was chasing that picture. So silly! I still love window shopping them, but now use Temptalia to deeply examine each color to see if I already own it. 95% of the time I do, and I feel relieved.

I adore how you described the furry elastic of a worn out item of clothing! Your bra situation is my recent brow pencil situation. I was trying to talk myself into buying new brow pencils because my favs are almost done. I took out all the pencils & other brow products I own & started using those. I found that I actually like the other non fav products. They definitely do the job & in reality I probably won't need a new brow product for at least the next 12 mos if I'm being completely honest with myself. Which I think what this exercise really is about. Being honest, truly honest & realizing that no, you do not "need" anything most of the time! 😏🙌

I'm sooo interested in seeing your modest but likely beautiful fountain pen and ink collection. I'm on a stationery no buy this year, and so far so good though I nearly stocked up on greeting cards and notebooks from a local gift shop that's closing. My rules are 1) replacement purchases are okay if I have absolutely nothing in my existing stash that cannot do the same job and 2) buying postage stamps for outgoing snail mail is acceptable. I rearranged my supplies so that I can better see all that I have, which has helped so much already in cutting my desire for more things.

Thank you for sharing your challenges and strategies ❤ This morning I realized I have all of the symptoms of online shopping addiction 😢 It just creeped up in time and now it is a real problem. To make things worst, this afternoon I received a delivery of 3 packages of clothes and running shoes I ordered earlier this week. I felt so sad, not angry at myself, just sad, thinking: Who have I become? What am I fixing in my life with this constant ordering of things? I am not even happy when I buy them.
I bought 3 new things last week, obviously those things have not changed my life nor improved it. Why would these new things make any difference?
It is that horrible temptation: this is the only thing like a missing puzzle that I need to buy to feel complete. But that missing puzzle is never the last one. When is it enough? 😑🥺

You sound like me and I finally had enough! I can't commit to a year, so I do it by month. Had 2 months of no buy and messed up before the New Year. No one can be harder on myself than me. I just have to keep trying. It's a he'll of a habit! Or addiction! Something that helps me is the definition of insanity. Repeating the. same mistakes over & over again & expecting different results!

I am trying to have six non-consecutive no-buy months this year. I have a real addiction to shopping for fashion, toiletries (skincare) and home wares and have never tried this before so I am starting in February as the “easiest” month (only 28 days) and now need to put in place some strategies to help me resist. The automatic no and wishlist strategies, as well as organisation, seem like useful ones, so thank you for this really helpful video. ❤

    • @Mina_Susnjevic

@@wavyjenny602 I will do a similar thing officially starting from February. Though I stopped all buying after my first comment. I also think it is good to be aware of trigger points: boredom, fomo, if I just… and then address them with default No. Some influencers I follow are so difficult to resist watching… inspo should be in my closet and in the pinterest board, not in reels 🫣.
      But we’ve got this! 💪🏻💪🏻

I've found spending money to be very stressful this past year, even though I know I don't overspend or buy impractical things for me. I'm still spending more because I'm now fully supporting myself, so buying beautiful things feels extreme because I'm already spending so much on rent and groceries, which is a first for me freshly out of college. Your videos have added some very helpful perspectives on both sides of the coin! The love of beautiful things is wonderful and worth spending money on, but only in ways that make sense

You're not alone! Everything in price is higher. Food , gas, clothing, beauty products, etc. Yet people are not making more. It is stressful when you shop for food and each time it costs more! We had a pizz & salad delivered the other evening and with tip it was $50.00! We are blessed that we have enough to get buy (if I stick to my no buy). Many have to choose between heat & eating, or medication!

Marisa, I totally agree. Why can't we all have health coverage like Congress & the Senate. Our drugs are over the moon right now because it's the beginning of the year and we have to meet deductibles. And we're on Medicare! My husband can't retire yet because we can't afford it! Here's hoping 2023 gets easier for everybody.

I had something similar happen this month where I was feeling like I desperately needed a pair of all-black running shoes (Nike Pegasus, to be specific) and I felt compelled to buy them new off of their website, about £90 on sale. They have excellent arch support for a flat-footie like me 😅
I ended up feeling like "I do need running shoes, but I don't want to support Nike as a company because I disagree with their labour practices" So my automatic "no" was fueled by a sense of responsibility to not support that company. I've decided to wishlist the item and keep checking Ebay over the next few months until I see them for the right price. This way it will be more cost effective to me, and Nike doesn't profit 😎

    What helps me sometimes from
Shopping: when I want an item, I often have a special situation in m head, just like a film scene. It’s a FEELING, an idea, a song… then I try to imagine the whole scene with clothes I already have. Often I realise that it’s not the clothes I want…

I am super grateful you make these videos. 😭 They help so so much in reducing my spending. I talked myself out of going to TJ Maxx today to go pick up the super discounted Pat McGrath Bridgerton collection that I've been wanting for a long time. After watching your video I analyzed exactly what shades I wanted, where my collection may already have dupes, and thought about how much use I would practically get out of them. That was enough to squash the urge. Thank you for the good you put out into the world!!

Never in my life that I think that eyeshadow palettes could become both a point of joy and a burden for me, as I have begun a hobby and then fallen into the consumeristic rabbit hole it can lead to! However, I have found that when I really want a new release but don’t immediately get it, the process of waiting several weeks or months dims the appeal of that item. Particularly as new things come on scene and I can step back, assess and compare with a clearer head.
I love the wishlist idea as well as one commenter’s suggestion of taking a screen shot! Thank you for a well thought-out video, Hannah!

Please keep updating us on this, because I really overbought clothing last year. It was the first year I started fully shopping second hand and everything being so much cheaper made me buy more objects thus still spending the same amount of money. Now it doesn't fit in my closet anymore and for the first time in almost 10 years I have to switch out my winter and summer stuff. Really not happy about that

I feel you on the fountain pens. I handwrite a lot in my work, and I enjoy it (when I was eight, a teacher came to my school and taught us a beautiful flowing italic script, which I still have). I use Kaweco sport pens (not the best but easily replaceable) and yellow legal paper. I once had a vintage ladies burgundy Parker that my boyfriend inherited from his great aunt. It wrote beautifully but sadly I lost it.

I've been struggling with this lately too. Especially after the holidays, it seems so tempting to take advantage of all the sales and fill out the holes in my wardrobe with the items I put on my holiday wish list but did not receive. Even though most of the items I've purchased in the past month were replacements of worn-out items so there was no net gain of stuff, I really have to question if those items really needed replacing right away or if I could have just gotten by without a replacement and lived with less for a while. There are two more items on my list to replace, but I am going to try my level best to hold off until the end of summer/early fall to replace those pieces for the next cold season and finish out this one with what I have.
