If anyone in here hasn't played this yet, do it. Don't even bother finding an actual physical copy, just get a ROM and play it, this game is unbelievably good. It should be noted, however, that it's part of a spiritual trilogy know as the Quintet's Creation Trilogy, starting with Soul Blazer, then Illusion of Gaia (Illusion of Time in PAL, which I think is a better title since the game's plot revolves a lot around the concept of the passage of time) and finally, Terranigma. All three are amazing, but different. Soul Blazer is a lot simpler and straightforward, and because of that I think it's the most fun to play. Illusion of Gaia improved a lot on the character development and story, but made the game more complex and less straightforward. Terranigma basically improved on every single aspect, but also had a nice balance between gameplay and story, where Illusion of Gaia had more story and Soul Blazer had more gameplay overall.

One of the best Overworld/Underworld themes from the 16-Bit era, I loved this piece..it has a very epic/melancholic feel to it. It's too bad the US never saw this Gem released. I'm glad I found it by emulation in the early 2000s.
Just started my playthrough today, I'm at the 2nd tower and this game is great! Really I can't understand why more people don't talk about it, the story is really intriguing so far, the main character has a great design and personailty, the inventory box is cool, the music is great, the combat is really fun, and the world is so cool
Parts of the game are extremely difficult, the sidequests are very involved, and the story arguably is too mature for both the medium and the rating. Also unfortunately never had a US release, making it effectively forgotten until the early 2000s with the rise of emulation. Like Soulblazer and Illusion of Gaia, the game's themes are rather heavy, like seeing the people you help get increasingly less happy with their world the more you advance technology. The last quarter of the game has been described by many as emotional, especially the ending.
Oh, just you wait... The game has only begun. It will tear your heart apart in the best way possible. Oh, and it'll make you probably replay it, to find out which things you missed through your decisions ;)
I think i was something about six or seven years old when i played this game... standing in the underworld for minutes and listen to the music... my favorite game for nearly 20 years now... memories...
Smooth McGroove PLEASE, you just can't deny this awesomeness... Even though the game was never released in USA, that didn't stop me for playing it (emulator )
Oh, the memories... I didn't play this as a kid, but when I discovered emulators, this was one of the first games I played. I love the music so freaking much.
Every second of this track is a masterpiece. My favourite bit is 0:20 to 0:32 because that is when a continent is restored after completing each tower and then you are back to the underworld map, ready to move onto the next one.
Anyone else here intentionally go an unnecessarily long way round to the next venue just to make sure this music got all the way round between each tower? Yeh, me too.
Terranigma really set you in the role of the protagonist. Feelings come out, monsters having to be defeated and the decision which you love more... i could spoiler the people who have'nt played the game yet but anyone who only knew the music and not the game... thats ashamed. Terranigma is a TRUE RollePlay-Game.
It was really sad when I dont hear this anymore.. I finished the game and this gives me nostalgia and vibes. It's sad that a game like this is underated..
@@blara2401 I come across your comment only now. I wasnt comparing the two. They are just my favourite overworlds theme. One sounds like an epic adventure, the other feel mysterious and kinda melancholic.
The first time I heard this song, it spoke to me as beautifully as do one's favorite melodies. These simple samples, this old-school buildup leading to such a melodic wonder. It didn't sound like another overworld theme - it was a theme with personality, not simply depicting the vastness of lands, but also the mixture of nostalgia, distress, and awe of Ark himself. By vibrating, the sound carried these feelings and poured them right into me and even today, I have yet to think of a video game melody that hit me this hard on the first go.
Me too, you described my exact experience better than I ever could. I first heard this theme on youtube when looking into Terranigma, I'd played gaia and found out it had a sequel. After I heard this I had to play this no matter what, but was very letdown to find out there was no western release. There was no translation at the time, so I imported a japanese copy and blindly played through it. I had to have the soundtrack CD too, took years to even find it, it's very in demand due to the quality of this music and very few were printed. I want to own everything related to this game, artbooks, guides, poster ect. The underworld theme is still my favorite piece of music. Look up "Roman Hauser Terranigma" on RUclips, you'll be glad you did
this song made me buy this game and this song made me by an SNES and this game opened up a door that inspired me to be ambitious and stretch out of my comfort zone and forget the "classics" and open up my boundaries to great games that failed to make a splash in the world. After all music is a language that can be understood by all languages and may the RUclips algorithm bless this wonderful song to anyone who likes music, and may that person be inspired to make a game that surpasses Terranigma in every way possible, and I will look forward when that game gets released.
This game has top-notch graphic and gameplay in its time & epic music and story even in today's standards. It's such a pity that this game is seriously underrated (even in Japan), but I'm glad it's at least appreciated here.

My good man, I love you. I played this hack a while ago, and I started playing Terranigma today, and noted how familiar was this song. You killed my agony, thx
That game really managed to give you a sense of epic :D I definitely wasn't expecting to leave Ark's village into such a hellish looking world, it was cool.
This game just had everything you could wish for in an (Action-)RPG. A protagonist you can identify yourself with, interesting places to discover, many different other characters you interact with and build a relationship with, true masterpieces of music that wake up the most different emotions in you... This game was pure magic. The creators of this game were gods back when developing this masterpiece. And nowadays games... they will never play in the same league as the older games. Shameful.
I looked it up. Turns out some rapper used this song as a backing track for some song he did. Not sampling, mind you, he just flat-out ripped the song without crediting it. He didn't even use it that well; the loops he used cut off at the beginning of some of the harmonies. I'm not even going to link the song.
It's sure been a hell of a journey so far... can't wait to see the rest! I wonder how those mad scientists pulled off that crazy double Mode 7 effect, or packed all this wonderful music within a few megabytes of space?
While the overworld sounds so adventurous and free, the underworld sounds very mysterious and heroic but the cool thing of this piece of music is that there is some kind of hollow to it. I mean, you are inside the planet (underworld) and it actually fits perfectly since it is completely hollow in that state.
@Spackenspastenkind The best games of all time were on the SNES. These, at least to my opinion, are the most epic games and EXTREMLY recommendable: Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia/Illusion of Time. Game developers nowerdays have far less imagination and creativity than those people back then. The only series that sort of has an epic feeling left nowerdays is the Final fantasy series but even that one is losing it slowly lately.
then it looks like you (or whoever did it) did a great job introducing him to those games! I sure hope those games will somehow still be remembered in the future
I can still imagine me, going out of crysta for the first time, stepping in the over(under)world and suddenly this theme started... and i was standing still thinking "what the hell, this is fucking awesome, does this come from the game?!" i needed to check a second time and after that i always had a huge grin on my face while listening to this... best worldmap theme OVERALL. no wind scene or terra theme or else can compare, in my ranking is this 1.0, everything else starts around 1.3 !
@ZeroNight75 True. I think this song is the far most epic videogame song every created. Even if there are better programms and virtual instruments nowerdays, this song still has a charm that is unimproofable. Ive looked for remixes for the underworld theme of terranigma... none even closely reaches the epicness of the original
I came back to say that this is the best music of all time. I want someone to come up with something better than this and blow my mind away. I truly doubt that its possible though.
@NeroTheDarklord The SNES had great games because it was so closely competing with the Genesis, resulting in two systems with some of the best games ever made. I'd be daft to deny any of those SNES classics you listed, but Phantasy Star, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Toejam and Earl, and Ecco the Dolphin were just as awesome. Long live the rivalry between SNES and Sega Genesis!
Bosta Cósmica é dois, acho que já sei o próximo jogo que irei jogar no cell kkk. ~Also lembra muito memories of mana, o melhor jogo de rpg maker(minha opinião) que é baseado na série Seiken Desentsu.

That game really managed to give you a sense of epic :D
I definitely wasn't expecting to leave Ark's village into such a hellish looking world, it was cool.
Shameful.
"Song: Sell Dope No More"
Wat
I looked it up. Turns out some rapper used this song as a backing track for some song he did. Not sampling, mind you, he just flat-out ripped the song without crediting it. He didn't even use it that well; the loops he used cut off at the beginning of some of the harmonies. I'm not even going to link the song.
@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 How about these rappers make their own music instead of ripping off other people's hard work
I looked at it too. Utterly disappointed.
It's sure been a hell of a journey so far... can't wait to see the rest!
I wonder how those mad scientists pulled off that crazy double Mode 7 effect, or packed all this wonderful music within a few megabytes of space?
Here from the call of cthullu romhack soundtrack , suprised how close it sounds to the original actually
I'm not sure what kind of horns those are, but they send chills down my spine.
Those crystalline arpeggios are giving me major FFIV vibes - some of the best sounding audio on the SNES
I'm just now finding out where this song came from. I heard it in a Mario romhack about Cthulhu and that's all I knew.
These, at least to my opinion, are the most epic games and EXTREMLY recommendable:
Terranigma,
Secret of Mana,
Secret of Evermore,
Chrono Trigger,
Illusion of Gaia/Illusion of Time.
Game developers nowerdays have far less imagination and creativity than those people back then. The only series that sort of has an epic feeling left nowerdays is the Final fantasy series but even that one is losing it slowly lately.
Epic music!
then it looks like you (or whoever did it) did a great job introducing him to those games!
최고의 명작... 내 인생 게임... ㅠㅠㅠ
아직도 기억나는 꽈잡아! ㅋㅋ..
저랑 같네요..저도 제 인생게임
아무것도 아녀유!
God this single track is top 5 on the SNES, almost reaches Corridors of Time levels
I want to mod Terreria to have this play whenever we go underground.
I used to sing this to myself on the playground in elementary school...ahhh man.
i have to thank an old friend of my sisters who got me into using emulators the only way i ever got to play this masterpiece was thanks to that guy!
Happy Birthday old friend, and favorite game
Wow, wow, wow... This is so beautifully sad...
@AstysFortune yes man, Terranigma again saved the slightly older snes
i pity the young generation for they will never know what a true masterpiece in gaming is...
Great song and game. I have to replay it again someday
Esse rpg é sensacional.
nem me fale
Looks like it's Emulator time.
Nunca joguei este jogo, mas esta musica é perfeita ♥
i did read all comments and agree with all of you!! terranigma was/is the best game ever! keep it in mind and it will never die
great song, I should play the game someday
Não curto muito RPG, mas nossa... quero jogar isso só pra ouvir essa música linda!
