Back in the days, I had my wow moment when I left the Underworld. I still remember playing the game and I thought it is gone be over soon. Then you get to the real world and everything unfolds with so many hours of gameplay, secrets, story twists, different areas (I was so scared playing the part with the zombies), speaking to animals (not being able to speak to them anymore was sad as hell), that game was an emotional rollercoaster with a shit tone of easter eggs. I play it once every couple of years. Its amazing and Americans would only understand if they had the experience as a child at the time. No other game creates the same emotions in me.
@MultiTarded "extreme minority" for those who didn't play it during their childhood mainly. Also not sure on what criterias you base that judgement off, gameplay, presentation etc are all long overhauled since then. Even worse. We also never got FFVI. But I remember the gaming magazines like „TOTAL!“ back then and their Import Reviews. Everyone was like „Chrono Trigger and FFVI are like the best games ever! Period! If you have several hundred bucks to spare, go to your local import dealer and buy those games! Your life depends on it!“. And we 15 year old kids with approximately 10 bucks in our pocket were like „Import what..??“. Them trolling us kids reached new heights when they regularly published a detailed walkthrough of Chrono Trigger. A game literally no one of their readers could play. I deeply hate them to this day and I never felt like a criminal for downloading the ROMs once we got our hands on this Internet thing...
The city-building isn't anything overly involved. It's mostly interacting with a few NPCs in a couple towns in certain ways (such as completing a simple task or bringing an item), to influence them to improve or develop the town in some way. The City-building part is mainly in seeing the results. They're ultimately not that different from you typical RPG sidequest, where they simply feel like part of the town exploration. It's nowhere close to something like Actraiser, where you have two different genres side by side, so I doubt it'd turn you off at all.
@@Ajogamer1 Actraiser was by the same guys. And yeah, its pretty easy. I mean, not a single RPG since then did do the effort of showing you the impact of their fetch quests, but it would be so easy. Thats the sadest part.
Have you ever played Terranigma once? If not - do it... Maybe you will change your mind! As said in another comment: The only really negative thing I can say about Terranigma is that it does not tell you the Level you need to use the full potential of the weapons you will find / buy... BUT if you use the right weapon against certain enemies / bosses you don't need to grind the entire game! You don't even need to buy any armor, because you will find armor in dungeons that is way better... And once you have the Ship you are FREE to explore the whole world (and you CAN explore it)... there are so many hidden things on the overworld to find... But if you prefer a game where you have a straight path set up for you and you can only explore dungeons then I do understand why you like Illusion of Gaia more... I prefer playing Terranigma over both Illusion of Gaia (or Illusion of Time as it is known here) or Soul Blazer... and I played ALL of them...
Terranigma is fucking awesome. I first played it when I saw a boxed copy at my local pawn broker for 20 bucks. I bought it immediately and loved the game ever since. And since then the boom in retro games has seen its value soar and that copy which I still have is now among my prized assets which are guarded by two Rottweilers by my bed, I feed 'em lead.
I still hope SamoStudios is going to do the Terranigma OST. Terranigma was like one of the most immersive games I have ever played in my entire life. I pity everyone who can only judge it by the way it has aged and never played it back then. I remember being kind of freaked out by some of the graphics, stills and visual effects. It was just wow to me. From the intro with beautiful music and images to when you leave Crysta for the first time and enter... well I don´t wanna spoil what you enter right at the very beginning of the most epic journey of all, but it´s incredible. yeah yeah I am a total Terranigma fanboy. :D
Being Dutch, i got this game on PAL, since it was never released in NTSC sadly, but damn, it was amazing. Everyone was talking about it. Thank you for your amazing review, it was quick and cohesive, to the point, and i always find myself loving your videos.
15yo me was kinda confused with all the existential questions in this game (like the rest of the quintet trilogy), and the ending left me numb to say the least. Still, I consider it one of the best games of its generation (which were, sadly, the last games of the SNES era). The music was just great, and the battle system allowed for quick action-packed fights. The story was great (again, for the era and compared to most other games out at the time) and the entire premise of going out to remake the world you had just undone intriguing.
It was a story about life itself and just like life, it always ends by setting the stage for another iteration of itself. This is not an easy message for anyone, especially not for kids, but it's an important aspect to learn for each and every one of us.
Yeah I live in the U.S. and definitely feel cheated. I didn't get around to playing a ROM of this until a few years ago and boy did I wish I had done it sooner! I was so completely blown away by what the game accomplished, I immediately played it again. I remember the first time I heard the "Underworld" music...I knew right then it was going to be an epic game and I was not disappointed. Now this game isn't PERFECT...but it's insanely ambitious without losing you (that was my main complaint about Xenogears, just too much).
You feel cheated huh?... Well cry me a river. In Europe we didn't get Earthbound till it was released in Nintendo e-shop and we never got Chrono Trigger
Norsk Dritehumor Don’t forget Final Fantasy II (IV) and III (VI), plus Super Mario RPG. I’m pretty sure that Soul Blazer was never released in English in Europe too. We were screwed when it came to SNES RPGs, Terranigma was a rare exception.
Played both Terranigma and Chrono Trigger, both are great but I prefer Terranigma for the more epic story of the resurrection of earth - let's face it you can't get more epic. What you said about the soundtrack is 100% accurate. Considering the game balance I had a different experience, I didn't need to level up once except for the final fight (Bloody Mary was actually pretty easy in my version). When I think about Terranigma the first two things that come to mind are the story and the soundtrack. Never played FF6, but I played Tales of Phantasia and can also highly recommend it.
I wouldn't compare them, personally. Chrono Trigger is the best menu-based JRPG on the console, Terranigma is the best action JRPG. Both are epic in their own way. One has you reviving an entire planet, the other has you crossing the whole of history to save a world you've already seen destroyed. Equally epic if you ask me.
If you use the Weapon you get in Louran, you will deal more damage to Bloody Mary regardless of your level! In my first playthroughs I NEVER grinded and still beat every single Boss with little to no problems...^^ (Even the Final Fight is really easy if you know what to do...^^)
All correct what you said, but dude, do yourself a favor and play FF6, its not just the best final fantasy to date(you can look into all the rankings, but its also my own opinion), its considered the best JRPG on the SNES(along with Chrono Trigger, but they have different themes and FF6 is extremely HUGE for just a 16 Bit system.....its more like a CD release, were development didn't just went into cinematics) Terranigma stands out as an action rpg, and only Seiken Densetsu 3 could compete with it, it was released in the same year too, on the SNES.(i could mention suikoden series, but lets just compare games on same consoles to be fair, but do yourself a favor and play Suikoden II if you are interested in a great story and ost with traditional JRPG gameplay, yeah 2d sprites and massive loads of text and all the drama)
@Blood Omen The rankings actually show Final Fantasy IX as the highest rated FF of all time (which it deserves) The US never got to develop nostalgia for Terranigma but they did for other SNES games so all polls related to best SNES RPG's of all time are pretty biased.
Bloody Mary is brutally difficult, and largely impossible without magic. Everything else was easy besides Dark Gaia 2's light attack (which can catch you off guard for the first attempt). The bosses were largely creative, but not nearly so satisfying as Gaia's bosses.
Loved this game. Personally I would put this over Chrono Trigger and FF6... granted I put FF5 over FF6. But, yeah, Terranigma is my favorite SNES RPG, hands down.
Terranigma was hands down my favorite SNES game when I was a kid in Europe. When the internet eventually came and I watched some retro videos I was quite shocked how obscure it was. I was kind of expecting it to be in every top 10 SNES games list and it would probably still be in my personal top 10 games list to this day. But, nope, it's existence is mostly not even acknowledged. I really blame it's lost US release for that.
I personally love it as much as FF6 & Chrono Trigger. Terranigma is a very unique game with enough independent pros to stray itself from being generic, and solidify itself as a cult classic. In most RPGs you fight countless battles and sometimes you don’t want to replay it because you have to level up, remember certain secrets, etc. But Terranigma has great replay value because the battles are fun, the storyline is great and you catch or remember certain parts playing through that have a lot of bearing to you and gives you certain feelings about life and your own experiences. No game is really perfect, because one person might perceive something as annoying while another might think it’s a cool addition. But I highly recommend this game to anybody, if you like Link to the Past, you’ll like this game as well
I don't know if you would consider this a spoiler, but I think you did pass on the opportunity to elaborate on one of the most memorable aspects about this game and Illusion of Gaia. And that is the fact that you could say they both take place in OUR world. To me it was so entrancing to travel all around the globe, interacting with all its different cultures, and stuff. I wish more RPGs and games in general did this. On that note, have you ever considered making an episode on Mario is Missing?
I totally agree, I love the setting and how you can see real life stuff, it’s amazing. I fell completely in love with Illusion of Gaia years ago and the real ruins and locations were a big part of that.
@@MegaFinalRound I wouldn’t consider it much of a spoiler, Terranigma’s intro tells you that the world definitely resembles our world in some ways, and within 20-30 minutes of gameplay you know it takes place in the real world. In Illusion of Gaia the intro tells you that it is our world by showing you a bunch of the real ruins you visit, and I can’t remember how much gameplay you need to do before you find any real world locations but it’s not that far, the first dungeon has you finding Incan ruins and although I don’t know if any of them are based off real locations they are based around the Incan culture.
I'm so glad that you talk about character motivation, character arcs, storytelling, etc. in your videos. It seems like hardly anyone talks about that in regards to video games.
BIG SPOILER (Not for people who didn't finished the game yet): Ark's world will soon erase after the fall of Dark Gaia, and his final dream was reborning into a bird to see the future world
This is easily the top ARPG on the SNES. Like if I was going to make a top 3, it's Terranigma, Actraiser, and Soul Blazer. The story is great, the music is amazing, and the action is fast and fluid. You can completely customize the controls as well, and I like to put the dash on L or R so I can run everywhere.
I think you just convinced me to play this game. I tried it years ago but never was able to leave the village. I do love Illusion of Gaia so this game looks cool.
+Cragnous This game can be a bit clunky, but the scale of it and the journey you make in it was really special. This was one of those games that really made an impact
One of my favorite games of all time. Wish SE would re-release it already. I beat the game like a dozen times and only AFTER that I learned how magirocks worked.
This whole trilogy (Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma) was great. I only played Terranigma a few years back on an emulator, though I owned the other two. God - Enix was great before the Square merger. They published so many awesome RPGs.
I just finished it and this game was really a ride. Really really impressive. Fun, beautiful, good ost, fantastic story, and an ominous tone through all the game. Quite sad when it ended!
I really appreciate your work on these golden classics of SNES. Terranigma brings back so much memories. It must have been around 15 years by now and i still remember feeling so sad after finishing this awesome game. I just felt like part of this game ;) Keep up your good work!
My 2nd favorite game on the system next to Super Mario World! The story is my favorite part for sure, the ending along with that song was easily the most emotional experience I've had on the SNES.
I only discovered terranigma (along with a host of other snes rpg's) very recently, and it's easily one of my favorite games. Top of Saint mountain is also one of my favorite video game tunes, I'm so glad you mentioned it lol.
Im reading the plot of this game and its amazing how much esoteric wisdom is weaved in. Tree of life, Antartica, the writer was clearly in to the fringe, facinating stuff and something i always wanted to do, weave everything ive ever learned in that catagory in to a one player game.
Regarding the Bloody Mary fight: you didn’t had to grind for the fight, you could have used the very well hidden „elemental weaknesses“ system and use the light / prisma spear (iirc) to do much more damage
I was 14 years old when I ran to the local pawn shop, during my work-experience break, and purchased a copy with my lunch money. No box, no manual, and I was hungry as hell, but goddamn I enjoyed every second of Terranigma.
More relatable than religion, how did the writers capture humanity so well? Love you terranigma fans, you know whats up :D (edit: its not shakespeare because its better)
I came into this game this year when I got the SNES Classic and I was left wondering where this game was. I was definitely absorbed into it. I also got a chance to play Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Illusions of Gaia and couldn't helped to say that I've been missing out. It's well worth it to examine.
I would like you to know that I think you have one of the best channels on RUclips, and I actually got this game because you recommended it. I can't wait to play it. Keep up the good work, Snesdrunk, and I hope you have a great rest of your day.
Another great legacy review, I found your channel very late but im here. Props for praising the 1 main thing that i remember this game for - the music! I had Terranigma's music on my old phone for alarm clocks, ringtones and just listening to it. This game is a huge part of my childhood
Being resident in the UK I am lucky enough to own this game (as well as Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, or 'Illusion of Time' as it was known over here for some reason), and it is absolutely magnificent. Good piece on this game, though I do disagree on Final Fantasy VI being better than it (game seriously loses steam both gameplay and story wise in the World of Ruin)... Chrono Trigger and Terranigma are the best RPGs on the system in my opinion (perhaps with CT slightly edging it over Terranigma).
That is very similar to how I feel as well. What's weird is that while I consider Terranigma to be the best in the series, Soul Blazer is probably my favorite. It's quicker paced, has simpler gameplay, and has a certain charm to it that is different then the others. I don't know if you can really say that a certain classic SNES RPG is better then another. They all kind of do their own thing, so I think it's kind of unfair. Terranigma is an action RPG, Chrono Trigger is a turn based RPG, Super Mario RPG is a turn based RPG mixed with a platformer, Earthbound is an old-school Dragon Quest style turn based RPG with crazy western humor etc.
***** Besides the Soul Blazer games, these are what *most* people consider to be the very cream of the crop for SNES RPG's: Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 4, 5, & 6, Dragon Quest 5 & 6, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3(AKA Secret of Mana 2), Chrono Trigger, Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, Live A Live, Breath of Fire 1 & 2(although they butchered the latter games' English translation), and Shadowrun. There may be a few more Super Famicom titles that belong on that list, but I know I got all of the top tier RPG's released in North America in there. That's pretty much the full list, but there are more that are damn near top tier as well. (Robotrek is just one example.)
Completely agree with this. From the UK but I'd never heard of Terranigma until maybe a decade ago. Playing it is like discovering a lost work of art. FF6 loses steam late on (although not nearly as much as 9 does), spreads a bit thinly at times with characters that add nothing, and pulls a few things from nowhere, but it's still a great game. Terranigma has a weak middle, tacked onto an exceptional begining and ending. Chrono Trigger is paced perfectly with a series of mini crecendos that always move things forward, so kind of edges the others out, but is by far the shortest of the 3.
This game was in just about every single shop in Australia in the 90s. If you went into the games section in any store, there were always copies. I don’t know anyone who’s played it but just about every friend of mine who had a SNES in the 90s knows about it. It’s always been this enigma. You could say, a Terr-enigma
Watching this really takes me back to my high school years. My favorite SNES game. Thank God for emulation, or I wouldn't have been able to play it and other favorites of mine like Tales of Phantasia and FFV before adulthood. It was fun telling my friends about these awesome games that would never make it to our local stores and rental places and then go to my place to play them in my dad's computer. Heck, even famous games like Chrono Trigger and A Link to the Past were unknown to us for a long time.
This is my favorite SNES game. Just a high quality production all around. Too bad so few US players ever played it, even in emulated form. I mean, I'm willing to bet more Europeans played FF 4&6 or Earthbound than Americans Terranigma.
Now that we have Collection of Mana, we need a Quintet collection of Soul Blazer, Illusions of Gaia and Terranigma. Also, hell, throw the two ActRaisers on there. Make it an actual quintet.
I recently started playing this game, and it always gives me something to keep it fresh. The levels have surprisingly amount of interactivity, and they teach you the new mechanics in a clever way. Still there's a great amount of discovery, some things even today video games should keep an eye on.
I'm only 20 min in and the music really is amazing. I'm worried it's been built up too much, but after recently playing Breath of Fire 2, it's hard to believe the two are from the same generation.
@@ilovegaren5943 unfortunately, it's one that wasn't released in the states. What makes it more frustrating is it's the only "quintet trilogy" that didn't make it to the US. So? Learn Japanese or buy just buy a Japanese copy(wink) so you can legally use an emulator. I think I used downloadroms.io but there are others. It's a beautiful game.
@@ilovegaren5943 Yup. It's full English. Can't remember but may be an EU version as well. The files are pretty small though, worst case scenario just try a few out. If you hit a total brick wall I can prolly help ya out via email or something if ya need.
My favorite SNES JRPG by far. I still wish to go back and replay it. You forgot to mention how you can influence the towns and shape the world or just leave them to be underdeveloped and simple.
I was referred to this game from a friend and played it on the emulator for the first time ever back in 2004. I loved this game so much that I put it up there with Chrono Trigger as one my top faves snes games. Seeing it now hearing that music brings back memories, such an awesome game.
so sad that i only remember like 30% or so of the story i should replay that :D was a really great game as much of the snes rpgs for my oppion the golden age of rpgs
I wasn't aware that this never released in NA, but goes some way to explain why this game has never seemed to get the praise it deserved. It's not the story per se which makes this game my favourite action RPG on the SNES, but specifically the evolving world map - it was truly epic; you feel your impact on the world as much as in any other game to date.
Never would have heard of this game if wasnt for you so thank you very much! Im still playing it but having a blast with it and is easily becoming one of my favorites games on the Snes so once again thank you for let me know this gem exists!
I'm quite surprised you didn't touch on one of the best selling points of Terranigma, the world EVOLUTION. I loved that you could encourage towns, and cities, to grow and expand by facilitating trade between them. One guy catches the best fish, everyone loves it, but unfortunately it spoils quickly so he can't expand his business. Solution? You find another town out in the world that has invented a new kind of metal that is thin and easily pliable. Take that to the fish guy.. suddenly you've introduced the concept of tin cans and he can expand his business, which you can then take the canned sardines to a world-famous food critic in another city, and help expand the town even further. Great stuff. I loved that aspect of Terranigma, absolutely loved it, and that - along with gut-wrenching story (that goat... :( ) and the phenomenal music - easily puts the game into my top 5 favourite SNES games ever.
I was glad that we, in the UK, actually managed to get this.. when we didn't get so, so, SO many fantastic RPGs :( It was a weird choice that it was never released in America, but hey; at least the game has been fan-patched to support NTSC-US systems now :)
@@sabin1981 There's some documentary series on youtube about the development of Jet Force Gemini, and it's kind of amazing how these console releases back then used to be handled essentially like indie games. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
I was so lucky to play this game back in the 90's in a small town in Australia. How it found its way there I will never know but its the only game besides Harvest Moon and Metal Combat that I played again as an adult in order to fully appreciate it...and to ensure I was in an appropriate age bracket to be cast sexy looks.
I'm finally playing it. 3 years after stumbling upon your channel. I'm still in the very early stages - the towers, so I know I have a long way to go. It's....OK so far. i'm not blown away, but I have faith that it'll win me over. Just came back to watch this video to remind myself what you loved about it, so I'll make sure to play when I can hear the music and pay attention to the story. The whole submenu/jump into a box thing is REALLY bizarre and I don't like it at all, I feel like I'm not doing something I should be, but I'm not struggling with any enemies and I'm leveling up, so I'm just assuming that I'll figure it out as I progress. Will report back! ;)
@@noslen8232 I hate to say that I think you're right. I do think a big sticking point is that I started on PC emulation, then I switched to a modded 3DS...When I went back and played (what is now known as) Trials of Mana, I did so on my SNES Classic and I LOVED it...I think if I had done that instead of making Terranigma a kinda on-the-side game, I would have appreciated it more. i actually really liked it and was having a blast, but for whatever reason I just fell off, and now I'm worried I won't be as smitten with it if I pick it back up. Now that you've got me thinking about the game for the first time in a few months...I'm actually really wanting to go back and play it more.
@@remakeyourself fair enough, I had recently beaten Terranigma myself and when all was said and done I found myself not impressed by it, whereas Trials of Mana and especially Tales of Phantasia kept me coming back for more
and on the subject of Mana, Secret is still my jam over Trials, the game just felt more sluggish compared to its predecessor likely thanks to it's prettier graphics, still a gem though.
You DO have a chance even if underleveled... and you don't even need to really grind up until a certain point! And if you grind in a certain area, you will level up VERY FAST... And Leveling is NOT ALL! In Terranigma EVERY ENEMY has a weakness to a CERTAIN WEAPON... Equip this Weapon and you will deal MORE damage! And there is another thing regarding weapons: You need to have a CERTAIN LEVEL to really use that weapons full potential! (Last Weapon in game for example will only deal max damage if you are level 36 and higher)... But - and that is the only really bad thing I can say about Terranigma - it does NOT tell you said Level... Up to this point it is one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite SNES Game...
Except for that lady boss in the Spanish castle. If I remember correctly you have to be at level 25 or else you can't defeat her. I remember not beating her multiple times (although I was using a lot of magic and attacks) because of that reason.
The thing about the grind wall when you get to Bloody Mary is that you actually don't really need to grind. Just equip the right weapon. Sadly the game doesn't communicate this all too well but most of the weapons have some sort of special ability. One can break rocks, another heals you slowly and many different weapons are exceptionally strong against certain enemies. So to easily deal with Mary you actually have to downgrade to an older one with lower attack stats. I think it was called silver spear or something like that.
Was lucky enough to pick this up on it's original European release and I still think it's the best game released for the SNES. Would love to see it get a Switch release as part of the Enix trilogy.
The ending to this hit me harder than any other game ever did. Like, even to this day, just remembering the ending still makes me sad.
Same here. This is the first, and probably the only game with the ending that stick in my head for 23 years after I finish the game.
When a RPG leave you with a knot in your throat once you finished it, this is how you measure the greatness of it's plot.
Well said. It's truly epic!

Terranigma is unquestionably THE greatest action JRPG on the SNES. And believe me, that is DEFINITELY saying something.
Absolutely.
Uh, you're wrong. It's actually the greatest game of all time!
You're wrong. It IS the greatest action JRPG on the SNES. But it is questionable.
I think that Seiken Densetsu 3 comes close.
Do you still have it?
You know that "feeding them lead" is a common euphemism for shooting someone, right?
Me too. I love it.
Best game ever made. That statement is controversial, but I will never love a game as much as I loved Terranigma
To each his own, I respect your opinion but I don't agree. I do however thought it was a really good game.
It's a true masterpiece.
Red88Rex Totally agreed with you. I love this game and to me is the greatest game ever made 💕
You feel cheated huh?... Well cry me a river. In Europe we didn't get Earthbound till it was released in Nintendo e-shop and we never got Chrono Trigger
Red, did you find this was your favourite of the Gaia Trilogy?
Norsk Dritehumor Don’t forget Final Fantasy II (IV) and III (VI), plus Super Mario RPG. I’m pretty sure that Soul Blazer was never released in English in Europe too.
We were screwed when it came to SNES RPGs, Terranigma was a rare exception.
Terranigma is a true Masterpiece. A story and a soundtrack that stays in my mind and heart forever.
Played both Terranigma and Chrono Trigger, both are great but I
prefer Terranigma for the more epic story of the resurrection of earth -
let's face it you can't get more epic.
What you said about the soundtrack is 100% accurate.
Considering the game balance I had a different experience, I didn't
need to level up once except for the final fight (Bloody Mary was actually
pretty easy in my version).
When I think about Terranigma the first two things that come to mind are
the story and the soundtrack.
Never played FF6, but I played Tales of Phantasia and can also highly
recommend it.
@Blood Omen
The rankings actually show Final Fantasy IX as the highest rated FF of all time (which it deserves)
The US never got to develop nostalgia for Terranigma but they did for other SNES games so all polls related to best SNES RPG's of all time are pretty biased.
Me too. Terranigma is an epic masterpiece. Best game ever.
But I highly recommend this game to anybody, if you like Link to the Past, you’ll like this game as well
We Europeans got Terranigma but for what cost? No Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger.
Played those 2 much later, but I think I prefer Terranigma over both.
As someone with no nostalgia for any of these games or consoles:
1. FF6
2. Terranigma
3. CT
@@zenyousapprentice3732 I played both FF6 and CT and also Illusion of Gaia (loved it) and rank both FF6 and CT like you did so I trust your opinion.
Spoilers !
Sadest ending ever in gaming history
biggest cliffhanger in snes rpg history ever!
BIG SPOILER (Not for people who didn't finished the game yet):
Ark's world will soon erase after the fall of Dark Gaia, and his final dream was reborning into a bird to see the future world
Lufia 2 has the saddest ending in gaming history, but Terranigma takes your heart away
Mother 3 would like to have a word with you
This one and "THE FUTURE REFUSED TO CHANGE" are true nightmare fuel
One of the videos that made me go out and play the game. I finished it yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it. That Crysta theme at the end..
I played terranigma 11 years ago in a rom. One of the best game i ever played.
Same. I was way into Chrono growing up and my Brazilian friend eventually sent me a ROM of it since most of them are corrupted online.
I think you just convinced me to play this game. I tried it years ago but never was able to leave the village. I do love Illusion of Gaia so this game looks cool.
Cragnous If you liked Illusion of Gaia you'd definitely enjoy this one
+Cragnous This game can be a bit clunky, but the scale of it and the journey you make in it was really special. This was one of those games that really made an impact
worth playing for the soundtrack alone. I loved this game when it came out and now it's one of my favorite games ever.
all u have to do is throw some vases at the blue door and you can leave the village...
Leaving the village in Terranigma was one of the top gaming moments of all time for me.
One of my favorite games of all time. Wish SE would re-release it already. I beat the game like a dozen times and only AFTER that I learned how magirocks worked.
DI GAME IS THE BEST COS YOU INVENT HAMBURGERS!!
Oh yeah definitely.
Played this when emulation was in its early days, on zsnes with weird layer glitches. have so many good memories of this game
me: yes 7 hours ago a new SNESDrunk video! also me: wait 7 years ago...
I think I really should finnish this game someday
I urge you to czech it out. It's a pretty swede game.
Hamstrung Harry But take your time and enjoy it. You don't want to be russian through it.
Its Hard To china through it. I mean You could japan In it
Man, the Leim the lion cub part its got to be the most adorable thing a game has ever made, so epic, I would have wished to have more about Leim
One of the only video game who made me cry. The goat...
Terranigma is comparable to Chrono Trigger. You will be blown away how well it's made.
I started playing this game because of your suggestion SNES Drunk. I am having a blast playing it! Thank you!
Another great legacy review, I found your channel very late but im here.
Props for praising the 1 main thing that i remember this game for - the music!
I had Terranigma's music on my old phone for alarm clocks, ringtones and just listening to it.
This game is a huge part of my childhood
One of my top 3 RPGs alongside Chrono Trigger and Suikoden 2.
Thanks for covering my favorite game of all time :)
BraunerBomberBatzen pass
When talking about best RPGS on the SNES, one cannot leave out Super Mario RPG
JMF. Great list of RPG's there. I love Robotrek too, great game.
The ending, and story overall, had me glued to my seat - and the screen! It's one of the best stories and ending I experienced. Ever.
3:03 This track and the Menu Theme from Melee are very similar. Super cool!
This game was in just about every single shop in Australia in the 90s. If you went into the games section in any store, there were always copies. I don’t know anyone who’s played it but just about every friend of mine who had a SNES in the 90s knows about it. It’s always been this enigma. You could say, a Terr-enigma
This game also has one of the saddest (or bittersweet) ending in SNES RPG games...
I’m not too fond of most action RPGs, but Terranigma is far in a way the best one I’ve played.
Thank you for introducing me to this game
Make it an actual quintet.
the dialogues , the vibe it brings...Ark is loved, blessed and alone
Thank you for the great work Sir
I recently started playing this game, and it always gives me something to keep it fresh. The levels have surprisingly amount of interactivity, and they teach you the new mechanics in a clever way. Still there's a great amount of discovery, some things even today video games should keep an eye on.
I'm only 20 min in and the music really is amazing. I'm worried it's been built up too much, but after recently playing Breath of Fire 2, it's hard to believe the two are from the same generation.
Can i play it on pc? Do i need to pay for it? Can u give me a link or tell me where i can download it from?
@@ilovegaren5943 unfortunately, it's one that wasn't released in the states. What makes it more frustrating is it's the only "quintet trilogy" that didn't make it to the US. So? Learn Japanese or buy just buy a Japanese copy(wink) so you can legally use an emulator. I think I used downloadroms.io but there are others. It's a beautiful game.
@@OzymandiasWasRight im in europe. So can i download it on English language?
@@ilovegaren5943 Yup. It's full English. Can't remember but may be an EU version as well. The files are pretty small though, worst case scenario just try a few out. If you hit a total brick wall I can prolly help ya out via email or something if ya need.
@@OzymandiasWasRight very big thanks man!
I just don’t understand why Square Enix hasn’t remastered this game and released it in North America.
We deserve to play it too.
Damn man... Your channel is solid gold with diamonds and rare crystals on the side!
My favorite SNES JRPG by far. I still wish to go back and replay it. You forgot to mention how you can influence the towns and shape the world or just leave them to be underdeveloped and simple.
Here was me.. looking at the title and hoping for a remake.. Great video by the way
I was referred to this game from a friend and played it on the emulator for the first time ever back in 2004. I loved this game so much that I put it up there with Chrono Trigger as one my top faves snes games. Seeing it now hearing that music brings back memories, such an awesome game.
This will always be my favorite game of all time. I've never come across a game with a story as good as Terranigma's.
so sad that i only remember like 30% or so of the story i should replay that :D was a really great game as much of the snes rpgs for my oppion the golden age of rpgs
I like this better than Chrono Trigger.
I beat Terranigma about 4 days ago...
That ending still has me fucked up. :'(
It's been years and the same feeling always crawls back when you remember.
Will you believe reincarnation now?
" knock knock " . . .
If you want a story that *really* fucks you up - play Silent Hill 2.
great part of my childhood, i really still love this game
2:10 ironically watching this video while using that exact room to grind in to get ready to fight the boss you mention immediately after XD
so wtf happened to Enix once they merged with Square? They threw away their entire IP library sans Dragon Quest.....smh
Same with Square and their library too. The Mana series was largely abandoned, Front Mission, SaGa, countless other titles too. All gone. Honestly, there's a *reason* why many of us reckon games truly were better "Back Then©"
@@sabin1981 There's some documentary series on youtube about the development of Jet Force Gemini, and it's kind of amazing how these console releases back then used to be handled essentially like indie games.
This kinda felt like the first *half* of a video, buuuuut it did get me interested in playing it so good job.
Will report back! ;)
I'm going to go on a limb and assume it's not all that and a bag of chips like people think it is?
@@remakeyourself fair enough, I had recently beaten Terranigma myself and when all was said and done I found myself not impressed by it, whereas Trials of Mana and especially Tales of Phantasia kept me coming back for more
and on the subject of Mana, Secret is still my jam over Trials, the game just felt more sluggish compared to its predecessor likely thanks to it's prettier graphics, still a gem though.
just started my first playthrough of this one, digging it so far!
I loved this game and playing it blind was an experience i'll never forget
I only learnt about this today from some random comment on RUclips and immediately got Chrono Trigger vibes from the visuals.
I never heard of this game before! Looks pretty cool! Thanks for the review!
This game is emotion central.
This guy works so hard. Leave him a like and a comment. :P
Finished this last month after this video, just excellent all around.
agreed on pretty much everything - i felt like a lot of the music was very similar to that in Earthbound
Best SNES RPG!!!
Finished this game and can attest to that: IT'S AWESOME.
well done review. could take a little longer, as terranigma has so much to offer. let's see if there are also reviews of the other soulblazer parts.
Was lucky enough to pick this up on it's original European release and I still think it's the best game released for the SNES. Would love to see it get a Switch release as part of the Enix trilogy.
still have to play this one. illusion of Gaia was fantastic
There is a very good fanmade sequel out there!
Search for "Terranigma 2 - The Continuance"
Fo0tie Rom hack? What's the name of it?
***** Its not a hack. The game was made by Envil Media. But it is in German language. Maybe it is also published in English, but I am not sure.
