I've never laughed so hard at a review! Love it. I'm getting the Amazon cable.

I also love that you kept it in the video. Never liked or trusted a RUclipsr more!
I'm glad someone took the time to make such a specific video as this! Thanks man
Wade Hartley My pleasure!
the cable part 😂😂😂 i legit believe you! it's always like this! something don;t work, you try and show people it not working and BAAAM works flawlessly 😅 Great video!
GDogg Productions 🤣 Thank you!
Haha, dude. When it started working and he was just so perplexed. I was in tears.
Hahahah that part cracked me up😂
I needed none of this information but I watched because you are the best. I love it.
Thanks!
Super video, You really know how to get all the info out for everybody to understand! UPS!
Justin, Thank you my man. I am exactly on this same journey. Much appreciated from one youtuber to another. cheers
Love this video bro thanks for posting!
Imagine finding your video for this exact reason… i’m equally irritated af right now and laughing my ass off. i’m subscribing purely based on your honesty.
7 minutes and I’m subbed. Great job man
awesome! thanks!
Really enjoying the content keep em coming my friend.
I've got that Atomos cable, and I can't seem to get the 10bit 60fps working, only 30fps. Any help?
”that kills my whole video, but...”😅😅🤣🤣ya da man💪💪💪
This is hilarious! Thanks for still posting the video.
love this video. just so honest and no BS
Kaying Oznemen Thanks! That’s what i strive for! 🙌🏼
Man, I've recently had the caution logo show up when recording and I were also using the Atomos cable. I'll have to do some testing with the SSDs to see if those contribute to the error.
this was hilarious lmaooo and helpful. thanks man!
Thank you man! you help me a lot!
I always have 2 cables when I leave the house. And I have the $14 4K 60fps cables.
Great Video Mate!
So useful, by the way what budget docking station do you use to edit your videos with the san disk ssd card?
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching! I have two actually. I use the atomos one and I just picked a USB-C one up from amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0133F30R8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@JustinPhillip thanks brother! How is the Amazon one working so far ?
@@adtvchannel3 it's going great! no hiccups so far!
Question: Hi there - I have just purchased the Atomos Shinobi and trying to use it with my Canon EOS R6 - it appears when plugged into the camera I can no longer use the screen on the camera - how can I still have access to the Canon screen and just use the Shinobi as a duplicate screen just for a bigger view of what the camera is capturing? thanks and great vid , subscribed
Justin: I like your matter-of-fact, honest style ... showing the 'good' & 'failed' testing is a big plus to those of us who've spent the Big Bucks on equipment only to see it fail at some of the most inopportune times, so in my book, this was a successful video ... and showing the inexpensive Amazon cable working like a charm ... but you're also right to spend the $$ when it matters & get the most reliable & fast SSDs for the Atomos ... hopefully Skippy won't be your frequent companion ... Bart
Robert Bartelmes Thanks!
great vid, I was looking for a cable for my XT4 and Shanobi
awesome, please more videos like this one, thanks man
such an honest video dude!
Flying-Artz Thanks! That’s what i thrive to be!
Flying-Artz that’s what I was thinking lol! Authentic!
@@JustinPhillip you should try to shooting something more detailed, like a bunch of tree, that could bump up the mbps, maybe the expensive cable won't be working
A similar thing happened to me. I also bought an Amazon cable, and it works every time. Lesson: always have two on set.
Amazing video dude! That's why we love you.
Lol this is so awkward because I wasn’t expecting the authenticity. Dope man!
HAHA, that's my whole vibe, man :)
When he goes on about the Viltrox EF-M2 not having infinity focus for wide angle lenses... That explained a lot for me!! I had a 14mm rokinon that was always sharp when set to infinity but after upgrading to the viltron I I noticed the focus wasn't as sharp anymore, I didn't make that connection til now
That's what i'm here for!
Did you adjust the center piece of the adapter to get critical focus?
@@theRnBmovement Ya, I learned about that not long after watching this. Now I have no issues focusing
I love you man, the most honest and a down to earth RUclipsr!!

Justin... Really good review and honest... Regards from London bro... I going to buy the cable 😁
Your honest review earned my sub
Love your honesty. Did you do any updates to your camera and/or inferno since you did the shoot?
nope
Firmware upgrade between this video and the set problems?
Love this video made me laugh. Love the honest reaction. But I'll no way spend £100 on a cable

What brand of short gold plated cable? Got the same exact problem with mat Ninja V and new A7sIII
some great solutions in here: kit.co/jpOnFilm/cable-mgmt
Great vid! Thanks so much
AIRWOLF Thank YOU!
Thank you for sharing your experience. My 100€ Atomos cable broke after using it for about half a year and I also got signal errors from time to time. The cable is very stiff and it looks sturdy but actually it is not. The stiffness of the cable can cause a lot of stress on the contact pins and they break easily. I also found it uncomfortable to work with. Btw. I neither like the Ninja Inferno. Basically it comes down to the same issue: Bad ergonomics and it looks sturdy, but actually is not. One more thing: The screen shade broke on first usage.
it is a hit or miss on the atomos cable. I bought the amazon cable. thanks
By any chance do you know the MAX length on the cable I would be able to use? I usually use 20-30feet worth of hdmi on my regular monitor on my car rig. But I’m curious to know if it’ll work with the ninja V
no clue
Hey justin just wanted to ask you. I have a ninja V on the way and plan to record at 400mbts. Does this mean as well as having a good SSD for the Ninja V, will I also need two V90 sd cards for the Gh5. Or should I only record to the ninja V. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks jf
Photography In A Click Hey! What i would do is record ProRes HQ on the Ninja, then just do 8 bit internally on the GH5, that way you have nice small files for backup, and you dont need any kind of special SD cards for 8bit 4K. 👌🏼
@@JustinPhillip thanks man really appreciated.
Hey Justin, Thanks for this video! you tal about what I was exactly wondering with hdmi cables!
On the other hand, I see that you use what it looks like a Rokinon/Samyang Cinelens. Got a question here, Ihave the 85mm/T1.5...How do you manage to stabilize this lens out of a tripod? I really like this lens but it is impossible for me to shoot with it when handling my A7III+smallrig cage+handles... even when activating Steadyshot 85mm.
Thanks again for the quality you provide!
CINEYTAL Hey! I no longer have the Rokinons, but yea, pretty much anything beyond a 50mm is gonna be rough when shooting handheld. Long lenses usually work best when the camera is locked down
@@JustinPhillip I was considering buying that Smallrig lens support (Y shaped) to give it an extra stabiliby. Do you think it would make any difference? Otherwise I think I would swap for the genuine Sony 85mm 1.8 (internally stabilized) Such a shame...
Thanks for your quick reply buddy!
I trust this guy more than anyone I think I have ever seen on YT. Good man, Justin.
MSF Productions 🤣 Thanks!
Great entertaining video, sub earned. I have the AtomX ssdmini 500gb with the Atomos HDMI on Ninja V and getting skippy on every codec except lowest quality 4k60p 10bit 4:2:2. Does that sound right to you?
Thanks! No that's weird....idk, i left the Atomos ring a while back...i'm rocking the new HDR 12G video assist from Blackmagic Design for the past 6 months...hard to tell what's going on there
Did the cable only work in one direction?
I bought the Samsung EVO 860 . Just recorded in 1920 x 1080p at 24fps . It worked but Atomos said not to use that in approved card . So I purchased the OWC 1t approved card . It works fine but I’m wondering if I could use the Samsung evo 860 ? Has anyone used this card? Please tell thanks . I’m shooting with a Nikon d850 clean out . Recorder set to Avid DNxHD 145 and Camera set to the 1080 x 1920 @ 24fps . Nothing crazy
Thanks again
I use an Atamos Shinobi and my false color isn't accurate - its doesn't display red even when I severely overexpose an image. Could it be a cable issue? Thanks!
That sounds more like a hardware issue.
@@JustinPhillip thanks for the reply. I've tried all kinds of settings on both my camera and monitor, contacted Shinobi about it and still can't seem to figure it out.
I love this ... i believe you man... good for you, you made it work...
bruh like 30 seconds in and I love your energy bro hahahah
I sub'd straight off the fact you still put out the video with your whole reaction. haha.
Honda Vlogs 😹 Thanks!
Hello, my name is Urias from Brazil... I have the nex fs700r camera and I have been trying to record in 4k on video assist blackmagic 5 ", and do not give me the option to record in 4k, that is, the video output does not show the option of 4k. You can help me
Thanks for making this video! So useful! I'm about to buy the Ninja 5 and I didn't want to buy their expensive HDMI cable. But today i just read (from a seller on Ebay) that if we want to record ProRes RAW, we need the latest expensive cable from Atomos. Is that true or can we record in that mode with a cheaper HDMI 2.0a?
Be careful because I’m running into those issues now. You will get banding and the images coming out of camera will look better than what’s coming out of the atomos
Pretty cool to me. Got some really useful info.
The Reason your not getting the skippy all the time is because you had the camera pointing at something not moving, it does make a difference when the subject or what ever is being recorded moves and so the sensor works and processes this, if you was recoding motion it would skip, because than more date is being written, when like color changes and motion changes that all varies ..
Also the best HDMI cable you can get cheap is the
"GERALD UNDONE MK2 FULL HDMI STRAIGHT BRAIDED CABLE (PURPLE)" 18" cable this cable rocks and it's only $19.99
it's the perfect size and designed by Gerald Undone and the KONDOR BLUE company. it's perfect size for what we all do and it works every time with every camera and situation, you won't go wrong at all..
Gerald Undone has a video on it, i have 5 of them cables , they are awesome and i had them over 1 year and they still work great and are in good shape..
Cool. Thanks. Do they make right angle ones?
The cable has directionality to it. You have to plug the right end into the camera. There is usually a tiny arrow on the cable end showing direction. Happened to me many times until I figured out the arrow thing. I looked back at the beginning of your video where you showed the cable and there are arrows on it. Arrow should point in direction of signal path (should point to recorder).
Not so.
This is the big-B, not the little B. Love it! @14:25
On set in the middle of Texas with no store within 100 km of me. HDMI issue you’re talking about...yup, present trouble. Fml lol
taught u said u didnt get the $100 cable to work b4 now, so when was it skipping again?
Hey Justin, a total noob here. I had similar issue with an 4K HDMI cable. The time it wont work for me is when my camera send a signal above 4K (for example 5K). I was wondering if the time your Atomos cable did not work was due to similar condition as the one I experienced (maybe you tried sending 8K RAW). Let me know if you eventually found the condition under which your Atomos cable would not work. Thanks!
Dude! Thanks for doing this and sharing! I appreciate the effort and info without all the typical bullshit/corny "youtuber personality " that some new/popular channels do. Keep it real & raw! Just subscribed! Keep up the great work bruh!
Ven Jemen Thanks man!
ha ha you are cool man. Alright I will order now the cheaper HDMI cable and the cheaper SSD. But 1 question can I use the SSD for the Atomos Ninja and also for my laptop to fasten it and also safe the 4k videos on? Or do I need different SSD's ?
Fitfatal Can def use for both. i have three of these SSD’s that i use for hard drives that i can swap footage between mac and pc and edit off of
I'm having the very same issue loads of cables tried and very few work just get no signal I need a longer 2m thin cable to use on jib, just been at local electrical store where they actually let me open boxes to try different cables we found 1 cable that worked but it was the only one out of loads that were tried.
Check these out: kit.co/jpOnFilm/cable-mgmt/came-tv-2-foot-ultra
god bless you mate
you helped me a lot !!!
nice video, I have 2 sanho hdmi cables that work. I bought a 3-4ft one and it doesnt work they said its defect or somthing. only paid $30 or so, also using samsung 1tb ssd with my ninja v on gh5 and it works great.
jason lindquist hell yah! Thanks for watching!
thank you so much for this video. I just bought a GH5s and am about to get the atomos ninja v and was looking into ssds. I noticed that the wd blue 1tb is less than half the price of the angel bird and it has a bit faster write speed. I don't know what is going on there... On their website, atomos has a list of supported ssd's but i think it's a bit outdated as it lists the samsung 850 pro, but the 860s are out now. I don't know why they only recommend the pro? The 860 evo and pro have write speeds of 520 and 530 MB/s respectively. The list also mentions the sandisk extreme pro, but that is not listed on their website. Seems it's been replaced by the Ultra 3D ssd with a write speed of 530MB/s. Too bad they don't support M.2 ssds. Those can go over 2000MB/s write speed.
Michael McGill Awesome! Thanks for watching! I assume Atomos has a partnership with certain companies. Lemme know if you end up using the WD 1TB. You shouldn’t have any problems!
Hey Justin Iove your video I was laughing only as this always happens to me regarding all sorts of things, it works when im using it as soon as I show someone it doesn't work I will subscribe I Iike your videos
🤣 Thanks!
lmao I'm dead was not expecting to laugh so much in this one
Hello buddy!
I am about to buy the Ninja V for my sony a7s (mark 1) and I was checking the different SSD's cards to record and I have noticed that the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD it has a really similar performance that the Samsung 850 PRO but is cheaper so my question is do you think that the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD will work for the ninja V to record 4k and all the goodies?
Thanks again a big fan of your work here.
Hey! Thanks for the view! Yeah, you shouldn't have any problem at all. That Sony i believe only puts out 8 bit, so either way, it won't be a problem.
@@JustinPhillip thanks mate
On Atomos Website the Samsung 860 EVO is not Compatible... Only the pro will work..
@@Diminish12 I also contacted with Atomos and they have confirmed that the Evo 860 will work, so no problem
@@adtvchannel3 interesting, i wish they would put it on the Website so incase something goes wrong they cant use an excuse of non compatible SSD as the problem..
I plan to use the Atomos Ninja V in a camera car. Can anyone tell me that it can record in RAW with a 5 meter HDMI cable? A quality cable, of course.
My Atomos cord had a similar issue where it would lose connection for about .75 of a second about every minute (which makes my recording essentially unusable). After testing all day IT FINALLY WORKED! FOR NO REASON! So far it has a constant 30 minute record time without error. I think it just needed to work and warm up out of the box. Can't know for sure. Just going to buy some low cost backups in case. Thanks man!
One thing, buddy. If you have more white front of the camera, especially more shaded whites, that results more data for the sensor (more of all the 3 colours). So the light and colour can affect the amount of data of a picture!
I may be wrong, but wouldn't a scene with movement provide a higher data rate and get closer to the 400Mb/s rating.
Jason Green yeah, that sounds about right. Is the ALL-I intelligent like that? Like similar to Constant Quality in BlackMagic RAW? 🤔
Still getting the amazon cable hahaha good shit dude, keep it up.
Justin, this testing method is problematic for few reasons:
1. You test recording without any motion in front of the camera, so the recorder don't work so hard to compress and encode lots of data, so even the cheapest SSD will pass. Go shoot outside.
2. Do not buy and use any sub 256 GB SSD drives. They suck. Pay a bit more, get the 500+ version
3. Cable testing: again, you'll need motion, that's when the camera sends tons of data to the recorder and that's the real test. If there is no motion, even a $3 cable will work
It took us 12 minutes to get to what I wanted to hear. But we got there.... Good information.
Hey man I have a question for you, is there a need to shoot in V Log while using the GH5 when attached to a Ninja V or Inferno?
KB STRONG Recording in V-Log gives you the highest dynamic range. If you’re recording on an Atomos for ProRes files, I imagine it’s because you want the highest quality image. V-Log is the closest thing you can get to a RAW image.
Justin Phillip hmm so you wouldn’t say that using an inferno would be just as good as shooting in V Log?
Justin Phillip & would you you say it’s necessary to shoot in V Log while using the inferno? Or the inferno is good enough? I guess my goal is to get a tad bit more out of the camera. Maybe achieve more of a “movie” look somewhat
KB STRONG ProRes is not the same as V-Log. But they do shake hands nicely
KB STRONG Then i would say most definitely shoot V-Log either in the All-I setting C4K ... OR send out to Ninja Inferno shooting in ProRes HQ ... no matter what codec you choose, if you’re going for the best your camera can give you, i would shoot in C4K V-Log ... the codec is up to you, the best the camera can do internally is the ALL-I option and externally is ProRes HQ
Usually you have to be rolling for a while to get the Kangaroo, between 8-10min.
So expensive for just a HDMI cable... But thanks, i was looking for an flexible HDMI cable Atomos compatible to use the Ninja V with a Ronin M without stressed the motors ! :)
BHC Prod yeah check out that Pearstone cable! Link in is in the description
I agree - I'm pretty sure you just need any HDMI 2 grade cable... there's a few third party's that do that - I shoot with the Ninja V and the Z6... Atomos told me I needed that cable... well I got a third party HDMI 2.0- Cable and everything works just fine - At CES they even showed RAW footage from Atomos to z6 in full frame usiing a generic HDMI 2 cable!
Herb Holder Media there it is! 👊🏼
Love it man.. $15 HDMI ftw (18gbs speed), just spent days researching cables.. bought 3x of these for the same price as the Atmos (we get screwed in Oz).
Bitrates are not always constant, It depends on the speed and detail of your content as well. So that could be why your Senabel SSD did work fine this time.
Hey buddy thanks for the video 😅. My friend got the same issue with the expensive atomos hdmi.
Oh man
Yo I just bought this same pear stone cable and it shows the caution sign
Nicholas Lloyd Whaa??? What type of SSD?
hi there about to get the atomos ninji v it has ultra hd 50fps for monitoring use only not recording so i dont need to get ssd just more batteries i use the panasonic hcx1 cam for this plus could you please tell me the cheaper amazon hdmi gold cable full subscribtion
Anthony Peirce link at top of bio
The reason why you had dropped frames wasn't the codec in the gh5. Actually it doesn't matter what codec you choose in the gh5. You are sending uncompressed signals to the atomos. The reason why you had dropped frames was because your ssd couldn't handle the bitrate of the atomos. When you have prores 422 hq, in 4k 60p that's a huge shit load of data. Just select prores 422 or lt and your are good with your ssd. I had the same issue with prores 422 hq.
that i was thinking when he was playing with the codec on camera
great video and thanks for the information on the kangoroo skippy just goes to show price is not everything quality is look forward to viewing more of your videos as i have just subscribed
Regards from the UK
Nice!
Even-though an old video, i've run into the same problem with the Atomos AtomFLEX Coiled (C5) HDMI Cable (12 to 24") connecting the a7s3 with the Ninja V for ProRes RAW 4k 60p..
It worked flawless with 4k RAW 24/30p.. but as soon as i changed to 60p.. it started to loose connection over and over again every few seconds...
..so not so good/reliable when it comes to they're 4k 60p rating..
I send it back and went for a 'much' cheaper cable (one sort of like the one you have) which works flawlessly also with ProRes RAW 4k 60p..
...started with some trouble, but thankfully discovered it before my two week long shoot...
And at the end, it saved me a nice amount of cash..
Hello Justin, I have the same kangaroo skippy sign with my GH5S Ninja V Atomos cable. I have the Angelbird 2 TB SSD. I made a lot of test. For two months everything was working fine than the kangoroo sign apperared. Sometimes after 2 minutes, but sometimes after 25 minutes. But always appears. If I change the codec on Ninja from Prores HQ to Prores LT and instead of 4K60 I switch to 4K30 it works. On the Ninja you could check how long you may shoot if you use Prores HQ 4k60 ( 2 hours 25 minutes) or Prores LT 4K30 ( more than 10 hours). This means if you use lower write speed (lower quality) it may works. I will test other cables and I already contacted Angelbird to replace the SSD, but because the virus I can not send anything to Austria.
Thanks for this video, I saw it and still didnt listen. I learned the hard way about frame skipping with cheap SSDs
