UPDATE: Tomorrow (Thursday), Erik and Gina will host a livestream Q&A on our Breakroom channel to discuss this first Harry Potter film and our progress on this rewatch series. Join us at 3pm PT: www.youtube.com/@BreakroomNR
27:35 you must remember that in Harry’s year, all of those kids were born during a pretty violent time for wizards. Typically, less kids are born during times of war.
Especially for the Gryffindors who kind of act as the front line. Slytherin probably had twice as many kids and Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were somewhere in the middle
I don't think it's ever been officially confirmed, but my theory about Hagrid's wand is that Dumbledore repaired it with the Elder wand (as Harry did with his own wand), but they had to hide the wand in the umbrella because Hagrid was not supposed to have one. I also suspect that Dumbledore taught Hagrid magic after he was expelled.
I do not think Dumbledore would not have needed to repair it for Hagrid to still use it. Wands help channel and amplify a wizards casting ability. With Hagrid being half giant, he is naturally stronger against magic. So, he would be able to still control a broken wand better than a wizard would be against spells rebounding toward the caster...like in the case of Ron and Lockhart.
@@tshumameli192in the book he 10000% knows. Hagrid says he’s allowed to use some magic on the way to find Harry at the Dursleys. He even says he can stretch it a little longer on the route back to London. It’s part of why he was so excited to go get Harry, it would officially allow him to use Magic for a time
I dont get why he as released from azkaban, so believed innocent, but beleieved the most likely suspect proven by the ministrys immedite assumption its him, but allowed to work at the school despite all this
I like that in the extended lore, not all Slytherin's are evil and not all Gryffindor's are heroes. Merlin was a Slytherin and Pettigrew was a Gryffindor after all.
I also think most of kids kept family traditions, like Draco. Imagine he came home a Gryffindor. They're asking an 11 year old to make a decision that most of them don't even have a clue about.
03:58 Harry was actually brought to the Dursley's on the night of November 1st, but as a Brit that now lives in North America I can confirm that we definitely don't decorate our houses anywhere near as much as you guys do for Halloween (maybe the odd house with pumpkins on the doorstep)
In the 80's as a child we Never decorated for Halloween - or even celebrated it much! I remember we used to carve turnips or swedes in the 80's & early 90's - it was only after then that pumpkins were brought in to fashion for posh folks that could afford them. but still NO decorating of houses for that time of year - not until the 2010's did that become even mildly fashionable. We 'celebrate' fireworks/Bonfire night WAY more than halloween back then.
"Mischief Managed" is the perfect way to end each video in this series, soo excited to see the rest of it. Also not sure if someone else commented this but you didn't mention that both of the Phoenix feathers that are in Harry and Voldemort's wands' came from Fawkes.
Awesome video! - The Super Carlin Brothers actually theorised the reason for fewer children in Harry's year being down to the many lost lives, and families fleeing during the wizarding war and the height of Voldermort's reign of terror. So, theoretically, the older and younger years would have more children.
Man, this breakdown brought me back to my childhood. The Harry Potter books were actually the reason I learned the English language. These books were also the reason I opened a dictionary. These books helped me a lot especially whenever I feel down. They will always remain precious to me.
I always thought it was a worse stereotype for Seamus to be blowing things up throughout the whole series... Why would someone from England create an Irish character during the late 80's, early 90's that kept making explosions...? 😬
I took a class on the Harry Potter series in university and once you actually look for it, you'd be shocked at how many stereotypes there are in this series lmao
Great breakdown! A few items I would add: - Harry does meet Malfoy earlier in the book and he doesn't like him immediately because he reminds him of Dudley -There is a scene of the trio and Hagrid where you can see Emma mouthing the other's lines (love kid actors) - Rupert got injured in the chess scene, you can see it in the movie where there is a gash that appears on his face from flying debris -Please mention something that needs to not change in the TV show is that Ravenclaw needs to keep the Eagle and bronze colors, all of the movie items for purchase change their house to be a raven and silver as the secondary color! Overall amazing work!
For reference in the future deep dives, the town is Little "WINJ-ing" and Dursley is pronounced throughout the moves as "DURZ-lee". Not complaining or judging, just informing.
You mentioned the fact that it's Philosopher's Stone in Britain, and Sorcerer's Stone in the US, because the American publisher didn't think the US kids would get the reference. I noticed that in the beginning they also changed some words in at least the first two books from British words like JUMPER & TRAINERS to the American SWEATER & SNEAKERS for example. The later books didn't have as many adjustments.
changing some words to be recognizable to american children makes sense, but the sorcerer's stone thing is literally just so stupid 😭, like who cares if they dont notice the reference, we're not gonna change goku's name in dragon ball in the dub cause american kids wouldnt get the journey to the west reference
I think the publishers are ignorant. How can we learn cultures if we aren't fully exposed to it all? I visited England and I learned the language and what meant what. As a reader you will learn what terms mean. They should have kept it as is.
@@jhank708 I think it's a golden eagle, not a bald eagle, of course, but yeah. Apparently it's because that was Ravenclaw's patronus. Does make some sense since none of the other houses are named after animals at all.
@@theotakux5959 well they are sort off, griffindor is named after a griffin which is an animal to wizards at least, Slytherin is named after the movement of an animal, and Hufflepuff is also named after an action made by an animal in a story, so all are animal related.

1:02:12 Harry Potter is for ALL ages. If you enjoy the books/movies, say at 10 years old, then enjoy them as a child. At 20, as a young adult. At 30 as an adult…. Etc. At 60, like me, then as an older adult. Again, it’s for all ages, if you were lucky enough to be 10 when the series was first being released, I’m envious. You can revisit these stories through your decades of life and bring your current mindset with you. In that way, you can identify with all of the characters, what a treat that is.
We will be releasing these Harry Potter breakdowns every Saturday on this channel through the end of the year! What other past film series would you like to see New Rockstars revisit in 2025?
FYI, those round Harry Potter glasses were meant to be the cheap, crappy glasses provided to poor kids for free from the National Health. Meanwhile, I spent a ton of money to buy beautiful round "Harry Potter" glasses from Germany and got a ton of compliments from random strangers those years I wore them.
I have to disagree. Snape being portrayed as sassy and flamboyant is a directing issue not acting. The shift in overall tone for the movies after his replacement was needed to put the series on the right course.
also fun to know, in the potions class, Snape is saying Harry isn't paying attention, but if you look closely at what Harry was writing, he writes everything Snape says, so Harry WAS paying attention
6:33 Terry Gilliam was born in Minnesota, and while he may have actually formally renounced his US citizenship I'm not sure you could actually call him an "Englishman".
Just woke up and I don’t have to be at work for 2 hours so perfect timing!!! Harry Potter is my favorite series ever, I’m so excited that you’re doing these breakdowns!
Not all slitheryns are evil. The attribute most notably associated with Slytherin is ambition. While this can be associated with evil, it can also be associated with success in the person's chosen Field.
I’m surprised that you guys didn’t point out the moment on the chess board where Rupert was actually cut on the cheek by a piece of debris after falling off the knight
We don't hear much of the Malfoys homelife, but I dont' think Draco can go home the loving embrace of his parents. His mother loves him but are cold and aloof and his father is bossy, controlling and just interrested in how he can use hos son to elevate himself and his family to higher power. This does not improve after Voldemort is resurrected after the Triwizard Tournament. At least Harry has the Weaslys as a surrogate family Draco is just stuck in his ivory tower.
I'd love a follow up video going down the Harry Potter iceberg, discussing the validity of various theories and whether or not to include them in the WB show.
28:21 - In the Return to Hogwarts documentary, Daniel Radcliffe actually mentions David Bradley as an example of actors who were in smaller roles in the movies, but have done these amazing acting roles. (like the ones mentioned in this video) And I loved that he said that, because there is a lot of talent in the movies, though in some cases, you only realize it when you delve deeper into the actors and actresses' resumes.
If you haven’t seen Pale Blue Eyes, a blend of mystery and horror lite, Harry Melling, who played Dudley, is cast as young cadet Edgar Allen Poe who is one of the leads. Christian Bale fills the lead role, but, fun for me was also seeing the reunion of Harry Melling with Timothy Spall (worm tail/ Peter Petigrew)
It was difficult to "see" Dudley in his character and it wasn't until I had watched it and someone told me that I went back and realized! He was no longer "Dudley-esque".
49:20 My headcanon is Snape's sense of legilimency was passively detecting another mind, since Harry was so close. But with his other senses saying nothing was there, he refocused on his threat to Quirrell. Or - going a step further, though it's truly just speculation now - maybe even being able to recognize it was Harry's mind, and wanting Harry to witness him confronting Quirrell as the true threat. Which of course, Harry could still misinterpret and see Snape as the real villain.
Ya, that whole commentary on the knight and its importance was very odd. It is actually the least valuable “piece” besides the pawn, so very off on that one haha
Fun fact: a long time ago, the queen could also use the knight's ability but ppl noticed that made it wayyy too powerful. Knight's are important but not the most. They're sneaky pieces and I enjoy playing against ppl that utilize them very well.
@@burneyboys02right? I will never get the movies changing the Ravenclaw hose mascot to a raven but then thinking Hufflepuff was good enough name to represent the badger
I just wanted to say how much I love watching this channel's videos! The amount of detail that you guys put into it really shows and I always learn so much!
22:19 Fact Check: Harry and Neville don’t share a birthday. They were born at the end of July (July 31 and July 30, respectively) one day apart. The prophecy is that the one who will defeat the Dark Lord is a boy born at the end of July which is why it could be referring to either Neville or Harry.
I love this!! I pray to the Sky Gods that the people behind the HBO series use videos like this to craft a really good story within the Wizarding World.
If Terry Gilliam wasn't a constant nightmare for studios to work with he would've gotten the job. I love Terry as a filmmaker but he 100% lost out on that job because of his inability to compromise creatively.
I honestly feel bad for the adults cast as characters Snape, McGonagall and Ollivander who have to follow legends like Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and John Hurt. Their casting was so perfect. They are tough acts to follow.
3:37 Voldemort killed Harry’s parents the night before. I the book, Uncle Dursley saw all sorts of “ funny looking people “ celebrating in the streets and weird sparks coming from branches. McGonagall was watching the Dursleys all day.
In the first book/movie there's a theory that a giant squid that lives in the lake is what pulls the boats to the castle just like the "invisible" Thestrals pull the carriages in the for the rest of the years/students.
I love the way American cancel culture works. It looks like "We must obliterate this person for what they said/did and retroactively cancel everything carrying their name... Unless we really like whatever they made, then we're suddenly able to tell creator and creation apart."
Never read the books. Love the films. "Deathly Hallows Part Two" was my favorite film of that year, actually. Alan Rickman's performance was amazing. Great films.
Yes he does. He went to Albania in the summer holidays before Harry's first year, so when we meet him hes ahd Voldemort on the back of his head for a while. Thats why he wears the turban, its hinted he didnt always wear a turban
Well done. As we constantly grow and evolve so do our thoughts and feelings about shows or movies we watched. Like when you and Jess ranked your Marvel movies and recognized that sometimes your position shifts based on where you are in your life or things that have affected you!
Something you didn’t mention about the challenges at the end: Fluffy, takes teamwork Devil’s Snare takes teamwork Keys is all Harry Chess is all Ron Troll would have been teamwork Puzzle is all Hermione This shows all their strengths and areas for growth. But more importantly. One more child was awake that night, who could have gone. Neville. What is Neville best at? Herbology. Which means: Fluffy, takes teamwork Devil’s Snare would be all Neville Keys is all Harry Chess is all Ron Troll would have been teamwork Puzzle is all Hermione This further leans into Dumbledore’s plan for Harry his first year (as described in the book).
Not entirely sure how the troll would require teamwork as it’s implied Quirrel knocked it out the same way Ron did with the other back in the bathroom. You really just need to knock them out with their own club and that doesn’t necessarily take teamwork, it does take bravery though and a mastery of the skills learned throughout their adventures
Also, Hufflepuff often is seen as the house that gets the rejects, however this actually goes into the second train that is associated with the house. Acceptance. Hufflepuffs are quick to accept others while the other three houses are standoffish
Peeves was in the film but he was cut, he was played by the amazing late Rik Mayal. He stated it was one of the greatest roles he did because he got the role, got filmed got paid and wasn't in it.
I love that you're doing this. Watching the films over the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend (after the Macy's parade :) ) is also a tradition in my household.
There's more cores than those 3 though (I remember Fleur had hair of a veela and I think Krum had a different one, too?). I think these 3 are the ones Olivander uses exclusively. Also, Neville doesn't exactly share b-day with Harry - there's a day difference between the two
Different wand makers and countries though. Ollivander supplied hogwarts students, many other schools and countries likely had their own wand makers and places like Diagon alley that unfortunately never got looked into
@livingphoenix1 fair point and also the one I did consider. Which is also why I added that those three cores may be simply ones Olivander restricts himself to or specializes in.
57:37 - Slight correction: Richard Bremmer is playing the face, and the cloaked figure in the flashback sequence, but the voice is provided by Ian Hart, who also plays Professor Quirrell, which makes the two characters even more connected together.
I'm sure others have noticed that, in the book, when Harry meets Professor Quirrell for the first time, he does shake Harry's hand. Later in the book, after a few failures, Voldemort actually attaches himself to Quirrell in order to keep him in line better. I'd like to see that dynamic played a little. Also, except for the bucking broomstick in the first game, each subsequent Quiddich game gets a little more exciting. Don't do stuff like take out players or have them fall from a height. That makes Harry's fall from 50 feel less dramatic in the 3rd year if others have also had that happen and no one helped them. RIP Maggie, Alan, Michael, Richard, Robbie, and Helen (etc)
I’ve followed both this page and Morgan(Movie Flame) for years now. When he gave you guys a shoutout I went nuts! Seeing you guys drop this video I immediately thought of Morgan and was so happy you guys gave him his flowers!!
@@owencoles2798they most likely have them all or almost all ready already as they mentioned in a lot on the breakroom channel and other than breakdowm agatha video's here
@@calvinwright2214yes in the books that would be right. He also wasn’t wearing his turban at that point either. He is able to interact with Harry without issues in their first meeting as Voldemort doesn’t attach himself until after the Gringott’s failure.
@@WaterMeLoan64I hope you can. The entirety of the two parks are fun. And if you go to the Wizarding World parks try to get a wand, it’s kind of a surreal moment for me having a wand.
It's totally understandable and fine that they wanted only actors from the UK, but still insane that Robin Williams literally begged to be in the movie and got told no.
I kind of thought Harry Potter World at Universal might be kinda lame, but it was SO fun. I got a beer and fish & chips at the Leaky Cauldron, a wand at Ollivanders, and a Hogwarts Express Christmas ornament. Plus we rode the dragon coaster through Gringott’s. It was a blast…. I highly recommend it if you’re ever in Orlando
33:25 The first thing Snape asks Harry is "Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning 'My regrets follow you to the grave' and wormwood means 'absence' and also typically symbolised bitter sorrow. Fun fact
A theory that a friend told me is that at the end of the day Harry is an Horrocrux that is why the family was so bad to him, being around a Horrocrux corrupts you , as you see with Dumbledore
Possible but they were already awful. It could have made it worse but than, logically, all the people in close proximity to Harry after his start at Hogwarts would have been affected too.
If this were the case it would have affected everyone around him, not just the Dursleys. The Dursleys simply never liked him and the more different he became the worse their treatment got. We see Petunia was already that way with Lily and they’re not nice to anyone else either. Dumbledore’s case was that the Gaunt’s ring was cursed a trick to protect it (which most of the horcruxes had on them such as the poison needed for the locket, the hiding place of the diadem, the charms set to protect the cup, etc). Doubled by the fact that Dumbledore was blinded by his guilt and ambition regarding the resurrection stone on the ring and to see his sister he didn’t even think about a curse or take precaution.

@@jhank708 Haven't seen it yet, but I know he played Edgar Allen Poe in something, just didn't know the title.
It was difficult to "see" Dudley in his character and it wasn't until I had watched it and someone told me that I went back and realized! He was no longer "Dudley-esque".
@@acatismansbestfriend5719 Yeah, he ended up wearing a fatsuit in later movies.
"The knight is the most powerful piece in chess and the one it hurts the most to lose."
You've never played chess, have you? 😂😂😂😂😂
The Queen: "Hold my butterbeer."
One must agree that promoting a pawn to a knight is a boss move, though 😁
Ya, that whole commentary on the knight and its importance was very odd. It is actually the least valuable “piece” besides the pawn, so very off on that one haha
Fun fact: a long time ago, the queen could also use the knight's ability but ppl noticed that made it wayyy too powerful. Knight's are important but not the most. They're sneaky pieces and I enjoy playing against ppl that utilize them very well.
OMG I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE REST OF THE MOVIES, ALSO OVER AN HOUR OF CONTENT!! WE DON'T DESERVE YOU GUYS 😭
Harry didn't share a birthday with Neville Longbottom. He shared a birth month.
A day apart
@@Dronkers56 Neville was born July 30, 1980, and Harry the next day.
Right, the prophecy stated born at the end of July
@@squirrerlas6340 I love how prophecies are always vague.
I really appreciate how deep you and the team have gone into this, can't wait for the rest of the series!
Literally got chills when the theme song played. This series made me believe magic was real. In fourth grade, I just knew my owl would come for me
I swear the Hufflepuff slander is just so casually easy for people, its downright offensive.
WHAT THE HELL IS A HUFFLEPUFF?😉
@burneyboys02 😂
@@burneyboys02right? I will never get the movies changing the Ravenclaw hose mascot to a raven but then thinking Hufflepuff was good enough name to represent the badger
Ngl, when I took my pottermore quiz and got Ravenclaw, the first words out of my mouth were “thank god it wasn’t Hufflepuff” 😂
@@spencernewton992 Well Ravenclaw isn't that great either. That's the nerd house. Gilderoy Lockhart, Professor Quirrell they all kinda stink.
My local theater played one of these a week for the last 8 weeks.
I’m completely fresh and these breakdowns couldn’t be more perfectly timed!
Morgan ross's video essay's are the reason i am obsessed with this universe ♥
I love this!! I pray to the Sky Gods that the people behind the HBO series use videos like this to craft a really good story within the Wizarding World.
This was such a treat and so thoughtfully laid out and executed. Can’t wait for Chamber!
If Terry Gilliam wasn't a constant nightmare for studios to work with he would've gotten the job. I love Terry as a filmmaker but he 100% lost out on that job because of his inability to compromise creatively.
Ron playing a Gambit to test out the chess pieces is absolutely justifiable. The boy plays dangerously!
This is an awesome breakdown! Special shoutout to the editor(s). I’m sure this took awhile
The books are great you should try reading them
For a certain generation, that was practically an Avengers:Endgame-level event, the finale to a decade of storytelling on film
27:07 Harry’s year is smaller than other years because their parents had less kids during the 1st Wizarding War
Biggest details the series needs to get right is all four House colours and mascots.
Don't dumb the details down!
Love how you talked about Diagon Alley at Universal and showed Hogsmead 😅
54:51 the most powerful and effective piece in chess is the Queen.
In the book, when they meet Quirrel at the leaky cauldron, he doesnt yet have Voldemort on the back of his head, nor the turban
Something you didn’t mention about the challenges at the end:
Fluffy, takes teamwork
Devil’s Snare takes teamwork
Keys is all Harry
Chess is all Ron
Troll would have been teamwork
Puzzle is all Hermione
This shows all their strengths and areas for growth.
But more importantly. One more child was awake that night, who could have gone. Neville. What is Neville best at? Herbology.
Which means:
Fluffy, takes teamwork
Devil’s Snare would be all Neville
Keys is all Harry
Chess is all Ron
Troll would have been teamwork
Puzzle is all Hermione
This further leans into Dumbledore’s plan for Harry his first year (as described in the book).
YES THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING!!! NEV SHOULDVE BEEN THERE!!!
My love for Harry Potter is so deep! Im so happy your doing this👏🏾❤️
Also, Hufflepuff often is seen as the house that gets the rejects, however this actually goes into the second train that is associated with the house. Acceptance. Hufflepuffs are quick to accept others while the other three houses are standoffish
Peeves was in the film but he was cut, he was played by the amazing late Rik Mayal. He stated it was one of the greatest roles he did because he got the role, got filmed got paid and wasn't in it.
I wonder if the books will take place in the 90's like the books or if it will be modern day.
There are no words to say how thoroughly I enjoyed this. Watch it on the treadmill and the workout flew by
I love HARRY POTTER so much. Thanks, thumbs up, have a great day.
You had me cryin when u did their voices 😅😭🤣
47:18 In the books he bought Fluffy from a Greek fellow at the pub, making a lot more sense with the cerberus connection
@ it might also be what’s easily attainable for him as well
I just finished re-watching the films! Perfect timing!
57:37 - Slight correction: Richard Bremmer is playing the face, and the cloaked figure in the flashback sequence, but the voice is provided by Ian Hart, who also plays Professor Quirrell, which makes the two characters even more connected together.
This came out at the PERFECT time! My 9 year old just got into HP! Thank you!
@14:20 at that time Voldemort was not on Quirril back, he does it after the break-in at Gringotts
Rip to all the great actors and actresses in these films we have lost
I’ve followed both this page and Morgan(Movie Flame) for years now. When he gave you guys a shoutout I went nuts! Seeing you guys drop this video I immediately thought of Morgan and was so happy you guys gave him his flowers!!
I wonder how fast you guys will get these through compared to Movie Flame.
i think he said a movie a week .
@ that’s a crazy amount of time to put through if that’s the case.
@@owencoles2798they most likely have them all or almost all ready already as they mentioned in a lot on the breakroom channel and other than breakdowm agatha video's here
richard harris was such a beautiful dumbledore. he played the character perfectly. i wish we had him in all 8 movies.
There’s a theory that the reason Harry’s scar didn’t hurt when he met QQ at the pub is because he wasn’t yet possessed by Voldemort.
His scar hurt when the back of Quirrell's head ( front of Voldy's face ) is facing Harry. He started wearing the turban to hide snake face.
@ if I’m remembering correctly, he didn’t experience scar tingles from QQ until Hogwarts.
@ they shook hands in the LC if I’m not mistaken, with QQ nor Harry feeling pain.
@@calvinwright2214yes in the books that would be right. He also wasn’t wearing his turban at that point either. He is able to interact with Harry without issues in their first meeting as Voldemort doesn’t attach himself until after the Gringott’s failure.
Can you please do impersonations like the chess scene in every Harry Potter movie break down! 😂😂 that was great !
Please no
The troll going straight to the girls bathroom 😭💀
I'm so happy you guys are doing this!
Diangon Alley was really a magical experience when I went to Orlando.
I WANNA GO!
@@WaterMeLoan64I hope you can. The entirety of the two parks are fun. And if you go to the Wizarding World parks try to get a wand, it’s kind of a surreal moment for me having a wand.
@@WaterMeLoan64 They're also adding a Ministry of Magic themed land (alongside Super Nintendo World) at their third park, once it opens next year.

Great Work New Rockstars !!!❤❤❤
It's totally understandable and fine that they wanted only actors from the UK, but still insane that Robin Williams literally begged to be in the movie and got told no.
New rockstars doing Harry Potter breakdown? This feels like a fever dream!
The big thing they need to fix is giving Ron his seance back so he looks like he belongs rather then just a joke that they have with them.
Correction I'm sorry but Harry and Neville have different birthdays. They both fit the prophecy though
I thought they had the same birthdays too, I guess I also remember it wrong
Quirrel was not yet possessed when he met Harry in the Leaky Cauldron (that's in London).
Fun fact
This video made me go buy to book.
