Because of this movie is what began the development of the Catwoman movie, which was originally set to be a direct spin-off from this but instead turned into the garbage Nostalgia Critic reviewed. Recommend doing that reaction with Kirby because she'd love all the people in cat suits.
Batman in this film and the prior film batman 1989 (which all the joker references in this review originate from since he was the villain for that film) was played by micheal keaton, who played the vulture in the tom holland spider-man movies
Doug doesn't mention it here, but in the last scene between Catwoman and Max Shrek, she's counting through her nine lives as he shoots her. Before the taser, she says "Two lives left. I think I'll save one for Christmas." So, her appearance at the end of the film brings closure to that as well as giving a bizarre moment of tonal relief
In case it wasn't clear, NC reviewed the first four Batman movies in backwards order: 4. Batman and Robin (1997) 3. Batman Forever (1995) 2. Batman Returns (1992) So the next batman movie review would be Batman (1989).
Now, if only Doug will review the animated Batman movies like Under the Red Hood, The Batman vs. Dracula, Gotham by Gaslight, Son of Batman/Batman vs. Robin, etc. He's already reviewed The Dark Knight Returns with The Last Angry Geek.
My granma had a mild heart attack yesterday, so christmas was essentially postponed. It good to have videos like this to bring a smile to my face. Update on the 26th: they managed to clear the blockage in her artery and put in a stint. All goes well, she will be back home tomorrow.
NC: *Shows the joker from a different batman movie* Kyle: Wait the jokers in this? The comments: No *Later* NC: *Shows the joker again* Kyle: Wait so the joker IS in this? The comments: No
If you want to imagine Tim Burton continuing the Michael Keaton Batman's journey, look up Channel Awesome's Fanscription Batman stories starting with What If Harvey Dent was in Batman Returns, then their Forever story and Batman and Robin Fanscription (3 parts)
Yes, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin come after this, and are also within the same continuity. The reason why the tone's so different in those films is because after this film (though still making money) did poorly with audiences primarily with families to the point McDonald's Happy Meal toys of the movie ended up getting pulled. Thus to make sure that didn’t happen again, WB not only switched out the directors from Tim Burton to Joel Schumacher, but also told Joel to lighten up the tone of the films as well.
Now you need to watch the best Christmas film that the NC has reviewed, that being Die Hard, becuase it's a christmas movie and you can't tell me otherwise.
23:09 There was a cat in New York that survived falling from a 32 story building 29:30 CAT Catwoman's 9 lives 10:00 (1) 19:55 (2) 22:56 (3) 27:50 (shot 4 times + electrocuted) (4-8)
I always wondered HOW exactly she got her "nine-lives" power in this version. Was it supposed to be like 2004 Catwomen movie?? Did Egyptian cat goddess sent an ugly cgi cat with magic breath to turn a random dying women to her champion??
Fun fact: Penguin's father is played by Peewee Herman. Years later, in the TV series "Gotham" (a serial reimagining of Batman's origin)... Peewee will reprise THE SAME EXACT ROLE: Penguin's father. And... oh, man, the sad arc he is in. Just imagine: Penguin, being "cured" by his evilness is let go from the asylum, he goes to his mother's grave, meets the father he never knew he had and he gladly invites him to his new villa and... Cinderella plays out, but the ending... let's just say it comes from the Greek Myth of Tantalus. "Which is..." Well... to put it simply... you ARE what you eat... Oh, also, little trivia: since you said you aren't caught up with Batman's mytho: Penguin is actually a human elegantly dressed, round, short and with a pointy nose RESEMBLING a Penguin, but in this movie they fused him with Killer Croc, a guy with a skin disease that makes him look like a crocodile (more recently, tho, he is a full blown crocodile-human hybrid). Moral of the story: Penguin is not actually like this.
Kenner was one of the biggest toymakers of the 80s and 90s. They were bought out by Hasbro in the late 90s, but the Kenner name is so established that Hasbro has released Kenner branded toys. If you look in the toy isle at say, Wal-Mart, most of the Star Wars toys will say Kenner. To misquote CinemaSins: "The Penguin's character is all over the place. It's almost like there were 3 people writing the script!"
Maybe do the previous film, Batman 1989, next. It is Doug's favorite Batman movie. Also, "What is that from?" Home Movies, 1 of the best cartoons in Adult Swim history
I still have three of the Batman Returns Happy Meal toys (Batman in some weird vehicle, Penguin in a weird vehicle, and a Batmobile). I think i also have a few Batman action figures.
Yeah early Batman was a little weird with firearms since they haven’t fleshed out that aspect of his character yet. It’s a big thing about him that he struggles with his own perception of morality due to being exposed to so much messed up stuff as a detective which is why he tries to avoid using objects made for killing. It’s ironic how he hates using firearms yet is one of the top ten marksmen in the world.
Checkout Nostalgia Critic Fanscriptions as they act out 'What If' stories such as if Tim Burton stayed on the Batman Franchise: Batman Returns if Billy Dee Williams Harvey Dent was in it, Batman Forever with Two Face and Riddler (Robin Williams), Batman and Robin w/ Mr Freeze (Patrick Stewart), and others.
Spider-man: Homecoming It’s the version from Marvel with the Avengers played by Tom Holland. He plays the main villain the Vulture who acquires weapons and tech left behind after avenger battles and then sells it on the black market.

Oh and While I do agree with you this movie is Dark AF but Michelle Pfeiffer was the first strong independent female actress and I wanted to be an actor so people will say what they will but HOT DAMN
This movie is actually meant for teenagers, not kids. The age rating was 13 and up. Really weird that people got mad at it for promoting to kids while being dark (despite Batman being one of the more depressing superheroes) yet as Critic himself pointed out they made kids toys from R rated films already! DC and Marvel always seem to get this weird reputation of being assumed they’re for kids despite having some films clearly labeled for adults.
Honestly wish more super hero movies went these weird directions more often. Sure it’s not all in character from the comics, but at least it’s not boring or uninteresting like some movies these days.
"Is that where the Penguin came from?" No, not remotely close. This was invented by the film itself. He does come from the wealthy Cobblepot family(No realation to the Wayne family as you keep guessing). He seen as an outcast and got bullied for being short and obese, as well as his pointy nose but he wasn't dumped into the river by his parents or had webbed hands. He doesn't live in the sewers. Joker is not in this movie at all, the Critic is inserting clips from the previous Batman film and makes references and jokes.
Feel like Batman Returns is like Die Hard with Christmas films it can be considered a Christmas film since it takes place during Christmas but outside of that it ain't really a Christmas film more so Batman Returns than Die Hard since with Die Hard at least the plot takes place during a Christmas party meanwhile Returns could easily be put as a winter film considering there's really no major plot that involves Christmas
Still better as a Christmas movie than literally ANYTHING off of Hallmark. I'll assume you haven't seen any of them. And this time, that's a good thing.
The best thing is these movies inspired the Animated Series version of Batman...which is considered one of the best and most accurate Batman versions ever.

Oh god the Catwoman movie sadly I watched that dumpster fire of a movie in theaters... On the plus side I saw Batman Begins in theaters the next year
I agree, really hoping Kirby watches it with him.
Today it’s Catwoman’s 20th anniversary and is meeting some re-evaluation as a camp classic

I refuse to consider the Schumacher films being the same continuity, they are just too wildly different from the Burton films to be the same
@theduckgoesmoo the joker was playing by Jack Nickolason .
Vichyssoise is a fishy sauce. It's French, typically made with leeks, potatoes and cream.
