Hey Emma, FYI the squash and pumpkins have female flowers attached to the fruit that need pollinating. The male flowers do not have a fruit attached. The inside of a male flower has a magic wand covered in pollen the female flower has a place for the pollen to be dabbed on to it with the magic wand. True the bees should do this but sometime we have to do it ourselves. If you report the bees to their local labor union office you can receive a voucher for a free jar of honey! Happy gardening Cya friday
I believe this is the first time I’ve watched you but I subscribed straight away. Very entertaining. Much love and beautiful garden from Georgia, USA ☺️
My grandma always cut off the dead and caterpillar eaten leaves , because the plant tries too hard to rejuvinate the dead leaves to the detriment of the healthy leaves.
Hi Emma It’s the females that have the fruit behind the flower, if you pick one of the males you can brush the long pollen stem inside the female flowers to try and ensure they get pollinated x
Love watching your vlogs! Rocky is a Cornish Rex. They are normally indoor only cats because they can’t regulate their body temperature very well and if they do go outside they stay very close to home. They are very vocal and affectionate. Pedigree cats are chipped by the breeder and although he most likely has an owner because he’s in good condition, one of the cat charities would come out and check him for a chip if you are worried he’s lost.
A feral momma cat decided to use my shed as a maternity ward earlier this spring. She has 3 beautiful kittens, a yellow one, a grey one, and a black one. The only thing they have in common is their white feet. I'm not a cat person, but these have grown on me. We feed them all twice a day. 2 of the kittens have had eye infections and I have treated them with antibiotics. They are all also flea and tick free. Might have to keep them and let them be shop cats.
I laughed so much when you ate the leaf and flower i knew what was coming .my pumpkin arch is doing so well too as is the whole of the plots i have in south west .Rocky looks thin ,so im glad you feed him .im rubbish at carrots too. Thankyou Emma for keeping us entertained xx
Hi Emma, love watching your videos. They are so real life. I got myself a battery strimmer to cut the grass. It's so much easier than shears. P.s. thank you for taking care of Rocky. Cats never say thanks, so I'll say it for him,😂
You’ve inspired me to feed nasturtium leaves to my brother-in-law next year 😂 He claims to like spicy things. Too late this year, I expect, as I didn’t plant any. But NEXT YEAR, I swear! Your reaction to the nasturtium leaves was quite amusing.
You need to treat yourself to a battery strimmer it would save you so much time and energy, I love watching your videos, I think Rocky is a stray cat maybe give him a few cat biscuits instead of treats he looks so hungry poor thing.
Love the swede thinning apologising to them 😂 Thank you Emma, love the videos lots of good info. I started out in April with an allotment so it's a learning game for me.
I had a blackfly infestation on my runners and cucumbers. Sprayed with a mix of 1small shallow tsp neem oil and 1tsp Castile soap in 1 litre of warm water 3 days running and not had any problems with aphids or anything else since. Can also be used as a soil drench.
Lol I love spicy food. I don’t know that most places eat spicy food quite like some on the other side of the pond. 😅 I am growing habaneros, aji chombo, and jalapeño peppers because I enjoy my homemade salsa to be spicy. I also am growing pablano peppers as well but they are more mild but I love to make some stuffed pablanos with some Philly cheesesteak type of filling 🤤
Here’s what you need to do for the pumpkins! FYI - the tying but he does is the night before they’re going to open (you can tell by the change in colour of the unopened flower petals) ruclips.net/user/shortsFbZ9xeFlyoE?feature=share
Next time you try eating the leafs and flowers take a bottle of milk and put it into a chiller box for safe keeping , love watching absolutely brilliant, at our Allotment we could do a fly on the wall for TV it is incredible what we see and what goes on with what the plot holders do and say , it is all fun , at Times , have a go at this for next year Tromboncino let me know on your thoughts , we have never seen one before but we are now growing . PT
Cut bind weed off just below soil level and leave it to die and shrivel up .if you start pulling it out while green chances are bits break off drop onto soil and root forming new plants .I just use poundland gardening scissors they are super sharp
Thank you Emma your so funny but at least you tried the borage and nasturtium leaves ,l wonder what the seeds taste like lol have fun and love your videos xx
About the pumpkin flowers, mmm .. you've got it other way round.. Male flowers are in bunches on the stem only and they are not growing into pumpkins but are there only for polinating. Whereas female flowers are growing by one in each spot and have a little bump underneath, and if they are lucky enough to be polinated then that bump grow into a pumpkin. The same thing for pumpkins, curgettes and cucumbers.
In the case of pumpkins it’s not the males that have balls 😉 😂 My Jack be little has a pumpkin as well, it’s my first year growing them so it’s very exciting 😃 I did have to laugh at your Nasturtium tasting, you’re braver than me, the smell of the leaves puts me off 🤣
I'm over here accidentally snapping seedlings when I transfer them with gloves on, to then doing it all with barehands as to spare my plants lives. And you've got one glove on and one glove off, which is definitely what I'll do in the future 😂
No female is the one with the pumpkin under, the male have the pollen (like sperm!) In the UK, we often have to hand pollinate as bees can take the pollen and deposit it on another plant. Also, the Bees may cross pollinate between your different varieties.
What I do, is when it looks like a male flower AND a female flower will open the next day, I clip them closed to keep the Bees off. Then when I wake up, I snap the male off, remove his leaves and then stick it into the hymen on the female flower (I know!) and if there’s more than one male flower open, I’ll put that one’s pollen into the female hymen as well to be sure. Then, I clip the female flower’s petals closed again to make sure the bees don’t interfere. That usually does the trick
@@TraceUK Or in the case of squashes you run the risk of making one high in the cucurbitin toxic - as happened in 2020 with the Fothergills seed recall!
Hi, instead of cat treats you can give the cat(s) normal dry feed as a treat. Way cheaper and they like it just as much. Loved the nasturtium taste test 😂 You are way braver than I am!
I don’t do thinning. I pop one seed where I want it and just replace the seed of it doesn’t germinate. With carrots I dib 1xcm deep holes and plant a seed in every one of them. Takes a bit more time than sprinkling them in but they’re so tricky to get found that I’m NOT thinning them!
Don't want to be a party pooper but it's a bit early to know if your pumpkins have successfully pollinated yet when they are that small. They can look like the flower is wilting and dying and you assume it's been pollinated only for the fruit to start growing brown and fall off. Sometimes even if the flowers have been pollinated by hand the fruits just die and fall off. I think this tends to happen early on a lot when the plant just isn't large enough and so not ready to bear fruit. On my Crown Prince squash I find I get several fruit losses even though I've tried to hand pollinate. I would think growing up a trellis like this would help though as it makes bees able to fine the flowers more easily. When growing on ground as I do, I find that a lot of male flowers just get hidden under the large leaves so don't think bees will find them easily. I would hand pollinate anyway if I were you. One issue though is the flowers tend to open early in the morning and close up by early afternoon. Not good if you aren't an allotment early bird. I find I have to rip open the female flowers to be able to hand pollinate.
Emma do NOT spray anything with viniger!! It acts as a weedkiller .There is a spray that Charles Dowding uses called BT spray that the caterpillars hate but it's very expensive .
Just to say. Vinegar, though it is a natural product, is quite damaging to the environment. It is illegal to use in gardens up here, not sure about the UK.
Worse thing you can do is feed stray cats. My neighbour feeds the cats in my street and there is always cats looking for food, and they all use my garden as their toilet. We have tried to kindly ask her not to feed them. 😭😭🐱🐱
Your carrot success in your first year is probably due to your soil being loose. Carrots like loose, well draining soil. Try growing them in a large container and remember they need lots of water.

Brilliant , Emma with the nasturtiums . 😃
I spent 8 hrs catching up in my plot after a flood. I felt so discouraged to get back at it today, until I watched your video - thank you😊❤

I don't think I've ever seen anyone gargle on RUclips before, I was crying with laughter!
Hi Emma my sun flower snapped in two places a fortnight ago anyway taped it up and today it’s starting to flower 🌻🌻🌻so there’s hope xalby

Emma, you are such a comfort watch. Thank you so much ❤
Aww, hope you get loads of pumpkins like you did a couple of years ago and me too look 😊
You made me laugh so much Emma, your a breath of fresh air. Love watching your videos.
Try a pumpkin leaf to eat, 2 mins in the airfryer. They are lovely.
Not a problem moving the swede poants 😊 they will be fine
That whit moth in the background is the cabbage moth .It's the one that lays the eggs and you have to get rid of them for your brasicas.
Your plot looks fantastic. My pumpkins are still not attempting to grow up the arch. Was looking forward to having them like yours

Emma , you can replant seeding as long as you keep the watering up ,I've replanted half grown veg and they have been ok just keep the watering up,
Hi Emma have you try coffee that keeps the slugs away for your veg I do and I don't get any give it a go .John from Nairn Scotland
Borage flowers look so pretty in ice cubes
They look nicer on the plant.
What do you have in the palette on the side of the shed? I like that idea

Thanks Emma, great video x
Sweet cherry pie Emma love it best gardening videos on RUclips !! 🍒❤😁
Thanks for the heads up on nasturtium leaves and flowers. I won't be eating them any time soon! 🤐
I love sweet peas, yours are lovely.
That was so funny Emma i grew nasturtians last year & tried the leaves i love pepper but that was insanexx
Nasturtium flowers and leaves are nice but you should try the seed pods when they're ready but have a drink ready 🥵🤯
That looked hot Emma 😂 sweet peas came back lush 🥰
Oh my god, I'm dying. 😂 I've never successfully grown nasturtiums so no idea what they taste like, until now. I think I'll still with pea shoots. 😂
For Squash and Pumpkins the females bare the fruit but need the males to pollinate which you can help along with a kids paintbrush
Cut bind weed off just below soil level and leave it to die and shrivel up .if you start pulling it out while green chances are bits break off drop onto soil and root forming new plants .I just use poundland gardening scissors they are super sharp
I always celloptape my broken veg stems too😆
Thank you Emma your so funny but at least you tried the borage and nasturtium leaves ,l wonder what the seeds taste like lol have fun and love your videos xx
Rocky, I reckon - from head shape, ears and markings - is a pedigree cat, so I expect there’ll be an owner somewhere
i grow my sweed in cell trays then plant out when gigger

Swede is another one of brassica family. It is truly brassica if you are using their latin family name.

Emma have you used coffee grounds, got a free bag in our local ,thinking of putting some in the compost to ?
What type of camera do you use 🧅🧄🥔🥬🥦
Hi Emma, I've just got an allotment but need to do the pathways asap. How often do you have to rechip yours?
Emma I use the app “picture this” to help me ID if it’s a swede or a weed, really helps. 🌱
im subbing coz you used ducttape to fix a plant lol
eat the nasturtium flowers, not the leaves. the seeds can be used as pepper.
I am sad 😢 I am one of your biggest fans xx
Are u not using your new hose

You inspired me to go eat a nasturtium leaf!.... 🥵🥵🥵
I thought it was just me apologising to my plants when pruning them 😂😂😂
Thanks for making me laugh 😂
Emma do NOT spray anything with viniger!! It acts as a weedkiller .There is a spray that Charles Dowding uses called BT spray that the caterpillars hate but it's very expensive .
👍 And I've found you have to re-apply BT after every rain. But it is organic, it's a bacteria that kills the caterpillars when they eat it.
@@fareebug8439killing caterpillars also kills the future pollinators. Murdering our future 😮
Ha ha ha, that's funny because you keep eating it 😂.
That cat is hungry. He not eating enough.
Yes you have that back to front the females grow the fruit just like humans
I know what you mean about thinning out, I feel guilty
I think you should wear gloves for protection.
