It's one thing (& a significant one at that) for as a parent to get to have and share the pride and happiness for your son when they successfully make it into the acting world when that as a profession was such a dream of theirs since they were a kid, but then ALSO it's having attained in particular THE role within that career that they'd wanted so badly as a kid. When it's an insanely exclusive club to which that child now belongs, only 10 people (by then) have ever gotten to do this one thing across a half century of show legacy.
It's like your son just nailed the acting equivalent of a dead on bullseye shot inside a 5 inch wide circle from 300 yards away lol

David had just starred in Blackpool, Secret Smile, and Casanova and had several critically-acclaimed roles on stage when he was cast in Doctor Who. He was up and coming. It could be argued that Doctor Who altered his trajectory. It took up five years of his life and suddenly he was known as nothing but Doctor Who (until Broadchurch came along.)
Despite his successful turn as Hamlet and Richard II, and several well-received BBC miniseries over the next few years, Dean Devlin and Neil Gaiman have both said they had to fight the money people to be able to cast David. Dean Devlin said he tried to cast him several times but no studio would let him. He is not seen as a "box office draw." He is only seen as "that guy from Doctor Who."
He still has yet to be nominated for a single BAFTA or prime time Emmy, despite several award-worthy performances, suggesting that members of "the academy" simply do not respect him and/or possibly resent his popularity due to Doctor Who.

@@sallyatticum He's received a BAFTA Scotland award as well as numerous NTA awards including one for special recognition for his entire career up to 2015. So it's not like he hasn't gotten some recognition. The thing is Broadchurch didn't get the recognition it deserved and Jessica Jones was an American production. In fact most of the stuff he has done have been smaller roles or stuff like Duck Tales that his kids would like but that wouldn't get him nominated for BAFTAs. I'm sure before his career is over he will receive one as well as an Oscar. Dean Devlin isn't the best person to be an endorsement for talent though and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him so I don't believe what he says about no studio letting him cast Tennant. Especially since he's been in several movies since ending Doctor Who (that are definitely higher quality than anything Devlin would put out) and while he was making Who it's not like he could really do any big movies. Since ending his time on Who he has been in at least one or two movies every single year (that's not counting the crazy amount of stuff he does on TV since then).
