Should be a great starter. I'd be interested to hear if you find BFS more forgiving. Some folks don't, but I absolutely did! Just remeber - smooth, finesse casting - don;t need the two-handed catapult cast on these! ;P
Hey, Thanks! Always happy to answer any questions as I share my journey deeper into Bait Finesse Style Fishing. Looks like you have a cool blend of fishing and aquarium fish on your channel.
So i just got one. My first bfs reel. Put it on a jenko double down rod. Haven't spooled it up yet. Kinda intimidating honestly lol Gonna be a steep learning curve i think. So any updates on the performance? Any suggestions on line to use?
performs well. maybe the most stable out of the clones I've tried. Couple tips: tighten the spool tension until the lure drops at a slow, controlled rate starting out, and set the brakes up high. You will miss to the left when you cast. But just drop the brakes down a couple clicks at a time until it casts straight. Then gradually decrease the spool tension adjustment for distance. As far as line, I've really been enjoying Diawa J-braid. Great casting distance and knot strength, and doesn't seem as likely to get a knotted birds nest when it happens... Enjoy!
Maybe a 4? 5? Not in the same category. I really don't find this reel to be smooth at all. I'd put Alde at a 9. Gekkabijin at a 10. I'd probably spend about double the money and get the Shimano SLX BFS if you can. I recently got the SLX DC XT and it's pretty impressive. The SLX BFS will be next for me. And you can get it in 6.2.
Another great vid Aaron. I haven’t had any internet since the storm came thru N.E. Pa Friday. Just got it back this afternoon and I was glad to see you uploaded some more vids. Thank goodness. So Santa brought me the GoPro hero 10. How are running cords out of it and still closing the battery lid? Or is that a mic wire? I’m gonna get out Friday to make my first vid. Do you think the word fishing has to be in the name of my channel to get proper search results or does that just reflect in the thumbnail I put to each video? Like if someone searches “fishing for smallmouth” or “fishing small creeks for big bass” does that search the name of the channel or the words that named the video? I’m having trouble figuring out a good name for my channel… obviously. Lol. Anyway, thanks again for ur awesome content and always giving it to us straight. Also thanks for your time with newbies like myself.
That is a mic cord. I only have run an external battery on a kayak so far - but it worked on my Hero 7. Channel name: 2 schools of thought. If you're building a personal brand, use your name. Second line is name it so people know what it's about. I kinda went the latter route for 2 reasons. 1: RUclips early growth is highly search-based. So the first year or 2 you'll likely rely on search for new viewers. But that is mostly from your titles, keywords, and "maybe" tags. 2. Once you devleop a following, you can change your name to a personal brand if you want. The best example from someone I've followed for years is a guy name Matti Hapooja. You can see why maybe he didn;t start with his name... LOL. www.youtube.com/@mattih His channel started as "Travel Feels" and somewhere around 4 years ago he changed. he went from around maybe 50k subs to 1.2M in that time. So the channel name, logos, branding, etc aren't very important in my mind, unless you really are targeting a niche. A recent one I saw was the Bait Finesse Fishing channel - or soemthing like that. I immediately knew what it was and was interested. Good luck, and have fun. The more videos you create, the more often, the faster you improve. :) And experiment with the type of video to find your style and what the viewers like. Hope you get some awesome early traction!
Ok that makes a lot of sense, thank you. I made a couple short vids(a couple 10mins and shorter) hiking with the kids on the GoPro today. I was able to wirelessly send the videos to my iPhone but it made a separate album and didn’t go into my videos folder so when I go on RUclips to upload I can’t because I only have the option to upload from my videos?? I guess I have to fire up the new MacBook and try it that way. Are you an Apple guy? What editing software do you use and how does it work. I’m gonna spend the day tomorrow fiddling around with it. It just seems like it should be easier to post a video from a go pro. I guess I’m not real tech savvy. Also my battery didn’t last that long in the cold. How many batteries do you have? I would need like 4 of them just to get a full 8 hr trip recorded. Then the 64mb micro card I got only holds a little over 2hrs of content. Guess I need a bigger one of those too right? Any input will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again for ur time Aaron.
@@johnsfishingjourneys Not an apple Guy. I sue Davinci Resolve. 4 hours. 125and 256GB memory cards. I always just download the files to my PC and edit there.
ok, changed the channel name and figured out how to upload. Thank you for being my very first subscriber. It means more than you know. My wife was my second. Blessed for all the love and support. I'm goin out trout fishing tomorrow and making my first real vid. Then I will have to figure out how to edit. Oh boy. 😳
@@johnsfishingjourneys Hey John, Shoot me an email at info@anglingwithaaron. I have something I want to share with you to try to help your new channel.
Snagged one during the 11/11 also. Hoping it’s a good reel. Love my DWU but it’s gonna be hard giving those some use when I have the Alde and Silver Creek
It’s a god problem to have. My Curado and SLX bfs sat at home last season but I’m going to try my best to use them. Great reels but the alde changed the game.
Trying to get your email, so hopefully you read this, l want to buy my first bfs reel, a good all around, im between 3 Zephyr, dark wolf ultra or the valiant eagle 2, whick would be your pick
Dark wolf ultra first, then Valiant Eagle second. Valiant Eagle is easier to cast, maybe a little smoother feeling, DWU is more versatile overall and can throw lower weights. Easier to modify for higher performance.
So helpful, Ive been using a bait caster for 38 years, but I'm a newbie when it comes to BFS. I think I will try the Genius for a starter reel.
Should be a great starter. I'd be interested to hear if you find BFS more forgiving. Some folks don't, but I absolutely did! Just remeber - smooth, finesse casting - don;t need the two-handed catapult cast on these! ;P
Nice, thanks for sharing. I have Dark Wolf Ultra KF 50S, it is good.
Agree. That’s the Only reel I have 2 of!
I'm looking for my first setup for trout bfs in little stream, what is the best Genius ou DarkWolf Ultra ? Thx in advance
I'd say Genius. They are very similar reels these days, but the genius has the extra gear ratio that I think makes it better for streams.
Awesome video! Your channel looks really cool!! Just subbed too!👍

Hi there, do you know if the spool bearings are the same as dark wulf ultra?
They are - 834, same as DWU.

@@AaronHuntFishing thanks.. I got a spool of 6 lb j braid so I guess that's what's going on.
Hopefully I don't over spool.
What size braid and leader do you use???
Typically either 6 or 8# braid with a 6# leader. Mainline is usually around PE 0.6 rating. In the process Switching to Sunline Siglon.
I currently have Alde. I am curious to smooth are these reel compare to the Alde 1-10? 10 is Alde. I want a lower gear(6.4). Thanks

i like how sincere you are😁 But i prefers daiwa and shimano reel😅 I try some Chinese but...not what i like. A, and abugarcia😉
The Shimano Aldebaran and Daiwa Silver creek are my favorites, but for budget reels the DWU and Hopefully the Genius are very good options.
Is this and the elf the same? Other than one is low gear and the other is high gear
That is my understanding. Same reel, different gear ratios.
It really is a good little reel. Only thing I don’t like is the drag clicker, feels like the “clicks” are a bit far apart
yeah, it defintiely has a mild clicker in it. great for the price though!
