- The world’s best Taiko Drum group is also the toughest and has an intense routine almost like the military. Members go through a challenging apprenticeship and those who make it learn the ancient drumming technique that have been the heart of Japan for centuries. Enter the Taiko world. We are on Sado Island in January for a rare look into Kodo’s drum training and practice.
They’re off to a European tour soon.

★ KODO in the Boston Marathon!
Members of Kodo's antecedent group Sado no Kuni Ondekoza ran the Boston Marathon in 1975 and played the o-daiko (big drum) at the finish line. When the group became Kodo in 1981, some members continued running. (But there have been no post-marathon performances ever since!) One of those members who is now staff, Kiyoko Oi, was the first women in Japan to complete a marathon in 1979. Kiyoko will carry the torch during the Sado leg of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.www.kodo.or.jp/news/20110100k...

Thanks for sharing with us in USA! I look forward to Native American POW WOW in Denver Colorado (In March every year, the 3rd weekend Friday Saturday and Sunday) Tribes Gather from other States!Tribes have HUGE DRUMS/SINGERS and ALL THE DANCERS! The Stadium is Packed and you FEEL DRUMS BEATING in your own Body! Natives Dressed to compete in Dances! PLUS THE AROMA of FRIED BREAD and INDIAN TACOS on FRIED BREAD! ITS NICE TO GET TOGETHER
They work their bodies so hard and have to know how to breath to not pass out. I would drive head first in a hot spring. After drumming like that. Pure energy, pure power.
Good fortune and good health. Generation of success to them.🙏🥁💖
🙋☕🌴
I trained with Kodo in 1983. I ran at 5:00 am, and I dug up the vegetables. I cleaned the toilets like every one else. I lived in that abandoned school house and cried more than once in the rice paddy behind it. While I was expected to learn the drumming techniques as part of the regimented discipline expected of everyone , as a Canadian woman I had no illusions about joining the group. With my background in ballet, I went to study Japanese dance with Chieko Kojima a wonderful dancer who was with KODO in the 80's and maybe one of the two females in the group. She usually danced in traditional Sado style kimono and headpiece across the stage in concert to the sound of waves as a kind of calm counterpoint to the next explosion of thunderous drumming. Her fluidity and grace were innate and silken.
To be around the group and take part in the practice sessions at that time was incredible and intimidating. I came to be friends with members most of whom have retired although the fellow in the yellow shirt in the background here may be Eichii, one of the last remaining members of that era. What a lovely man he is, incredibly friendly and welcoming. And a machine. While I am happy to see that more women are included now in the group and there seems to be a softer mood now compared to the precise and extremely regimented version of the group that I knew. I have seen KODO many times in many incarnations and the female drummers hold their own. However like John says KODO has a fierce reputation and it is well deserved. I left my blood on that abandoned school room floor. I cried but I never cried in front of them. It was a wonderful time.
Sugoi ne! 🙇♀️
Flipping FANTASTIC.
Hi John,
We just had an event in Los Angeles called Asian American Expo. This was the 39th event. At this event, we have Taiko group as well and many other demonstrations but your Taiko group KODO were far more into the Japanese Culture with long-time Shigyou. Hope you had great experiences. The sound came thru just fine but like you said that RUclips may not able to feel all the energy given out live where you are at... Until next time John... Take care.
There is not a single thing in this video that isn't awesome. Even the building architecture! Thank you very much!!!
I've heard Kodo and enjoyed it. Pretty wonderful !
John, thank you so much for making this trip and arranging to see the the pro taiko group! the ultimate taiko perfection in japan..
Yes please more of these types. Saw them in USA several years ago and you are so correct, it is an emotional experience and stays with you a very long time.
Taiko is amazing 🙂
Thank you John and Kodo for sharing this on youtube. It is one of my favorite pieces they play.
Great live stream! It was awesome to watch and listen to some of the very best drummers in Japan. The audio came through nicely.
hellohi821 Thank you @hellohi821 !!
Fell in love with the Taiko Drums when I saw them in the movie "Rising Sun" back in 1993, and 27 years later I still love them. I hope I can see some when I go to Japan soon. Great Performance Kodo.!!
Wow! T y for this...you prepared us to be expecting this!
Yes...heartbeat!!!
Thanks, John! Good show!
I love taiko drums so much! The sound of the drums let beat my heart faster. 😍 Its nice to know that KODO will come to us in Germany soon. 😊
Wow they're amazing. I'm sure the crowds on the tour will love it
Love Kodo. I have actually seen them in person twice and cannot wait to see them again.
that was awesome to watch thanks john!
Awesome, John! Well done!
Wow, haunting! Wonderfully done!
We were lucky to watch a performance by the Yamato drummer here in WA Fantastic
That was a stellar performance! You don't just watch their performance, you feel it! Thanks for bringing us this John! 👍🥁
I've seen and heard a Taiko Drum performance at Morikami Gardens in Florida. It is something to behold. But it all breaks down to a guy beating a drum with a stick. Leave it to the japanese to make it a great show... LOL Disney's EPCOT in Orlando Japan's Pavilion also has Taiko Drums but not on this scale.
That was awesome, John. Thanks for filming it.
Thank you for sharing this! Seeing their earth performance through this channel was amazing, and it was one of my favorite Only in Japan Go live episodes!
Great live stream loved listening to the drumming taiko are absolutely amazing 👏👏
What a powerful performance! love it!
When you see a live taiko performance, your body and mind certainly does absorb the power of the drumming, and this comes through in this video. Amazing to see and hear how this troupe trains. Nice camera work, John, and loved the interviews too ✔ Only in Japan 👍
Kodo is so cool. Thank you for sharing.
I have friends in an amateur group in Newark, CA. Just watching them is intense. And yes, they do a lot of outreach and teaching everyone. Taiko people are awesome.
What a honour to watch, thank you for giving us this opportunity.
Definitely do more like this. Walking around a town is cool and all, but I think this kinda stuff is of the charts. Part of what's so great about Japan is the high standard everyone holds their craft to.
It's been awesome to see a similar thing for a Kabuki troupe (famous or not) and maybe the teams behind matsuri (like the guys who train all year to carry 3-story lanterns at Akita's Kanto Matsuri) as well as people behind uniquely Japanese disciplines such as the making of yukata and traditional family crests...
*those are ideas I've had in mind for years, but I dunno when I'll be back in Japan.. and your production quality has gotten so tight and I know you'll do justice to whatever you document 🙌😀
I’ll keep trying to get permission to film like this. It’s really special. So glad to have friends at Kodo who want to share this music with you. Love some of these ideas! Thanks! -John
Hey John. Thank you. I put my headphones on and it is amazing!! It gave me goosebumps all over. 🙏🏻💖
They're amazing performers.
Thanks John Good show
Oh No way!! This is the same soundtrack from the movie The Hunted (1995). I listen to this all the time I still have it on CD. The movie starring Christopher Lambert and John Lone.
Thank you for sharing this with us! Truly amazing! I love taiko drums. Some years ago my husband and I had seen a group perform at a Renaissance festival in Massachusetts. It had moved me to tears. Watching this I once again was moved to tears. There's just something about that drum beat that reaches someplace deep inside of my soul.
I hope they come to New England some day. I would definitely want to see them live.
Awesome! Great stream. ✌️
Uff! I couldn't get enough of it! Fantastic performance! It sure was intense and energetic! Loved it! Thanks John for sharing this! Hope we get to see more of it! Blessings. :)
I remember watching this video a couple of years ago, and this June I get to go see them perform! So excited
This was awesome!
I love this. So much insight into a traditional art form. Thanks. G
I was able to watch a taiko drum show here in Manila performed by Drum Tao and i never thought that i would enjoy it. It was my first time watching a taiko drum show, it was amazing! This group is amazing too. I hope they could perform also in Manila.
Wow! That was awsome 😎
I'm so happy that you're a Kodo fan! I get to see all these behind the scenes videos! :)
That was amazing!
This practice session/performance was spectacular. Thank you for filming it, John.
You’re very welcome Richard! Glad you enjoyed this ٩(^‿^)۶
That was great to hear and watch, loved it!
I bought a CD years ago with Taiko Drumming in it and loved it then. The Hunted reminded me of one of the tracks I heard on the album and I had to listen to it again. It's called Hunter by Nihon Daiko.
Thank you for bringing this to the world John! I hope they come to Australia some time soon. Or I'll just have to come back to Japan.😊
Thanks again John and Kodo! 🙏🏽
Truly amazing. If this is just via youTube in person or live would be mind blowing. The different tones and pitches resonates into and through your body. Awesome.
I just love this !!! So beautiful !!! :D
KODO are fantastic John I remembered the live stream few months ago loved watching love to see them come to Sydney oz!!!!!! ♥️
Thanks for sharing, that was cool thanks Leo for sharing your story have a great day 🤘☮️😜
Great performance of the KODO band. It's amazing. You got me in Taiko. I bought recently 3 albums of the KODO band when I play it's for me kind of healing. Thank you John for uploading. Can you make a streaming about KOTO, Shakuhachi and Shamisen. I love Japanese traditional music. Thanks again John you're best.
Amazing.. will book ticket for uk tour.
Akira271979 you won’t regret it! There is something about Taiko - it sticks with you for a while.
It was a great performance.
I am in awe! I want to thank you for sharing such a wonderful performance! I could "see" and feel the animal being hunted by the hunter. The excitement of watching the story unfold was astounding! I have wanted to see this drum style performed live since I saw a piece on a group learning this skill in Ireland. Thanks again! Sincerely, MeKe
Sado Island can do taiko drum retreats for practice or health. It looks and sounds very meditative. Maybe training camps if people are more serious.
Simply amazing. I have to see them while they are in Europe. Thank you a great tip. :)
3:56 - whoa, are those Malayo-Polynesian gongs? And they use it for taiko performances? Dang.
Also, I wish you had a stereo mic together with the directional one going during this practice. Imagine people flipping out as they hear the different instruments go from left to right (or vice versa), and those more acoustically astute appreciating each instrument as you point a mic at them
Keep it up John .Love this type of cultural involvement.
Cheers. Vancouver Island, BC.
Sounds like they train with the warrior ethos in mind! excellent sound/performance on video, would love to see them live :D
Waa! Sugoi ne! Good stuff 👍🏼
Super merci !!!!!!
wow, you were in taiko paradise. Great Performance, the group showed a wide range of percussions, thank you.
as a former drummer it's like you can visit your favorite club while training.
This video is a great resource for Taiko drums modeling, thanks a lot.
realy nice chanel with inner insights
My pleasure Michael. Did you see the eyes, focus and performance of Leo who was on the left center? Amazing. Truly inspiring to see professionals at their trade like this.
John is well on his way to being the next Peter Barakan after seeing this video 👍
This was so good. An excellent performance , Would love to see it with original costumes and dance. Love drums. Cam we see them again?
There's a place in the UK you can do weekend courses in this, and now I think I need to do one.......
As I am watching your life-stream every day now, I seen you definitely much more often than my family who lives just 2 hours car-Ride away from me.
Yes John, this is what we’d like to see!!!
John, thanks for posting this. I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos, but this is the first time I leave a comment. I love kodo. I live in Southern California and went to two of their concerts when they were here. I would love to travel to Sado island for the festival one day.
I really appreciate you doing these videos. Japan is fascinating! I followed your ideas and went to Asakusa Senso-Ji temple. In fact, my family and I were there the same time you went on New Year's Eve for the countdown earlier this month. We could've run into you. We also went to the top floor of the Asahi building to have a beer and enjoy the view of Tokyo, Skytree, etc. What a treat!
Btw, have you done a video on Studio Ghibli? Would love to see it.
Cheeers and have a wonderful 2020.
Steve
Now tha the Grandpaa stops, i can hear you clearly.😂👍
I promiss, if they apear in Germany, i will take a look.
Good morning Japan.
I saw taiko drumming over the summer and i was so moved to actual tears. It's a incredible feeling of the beat of the drums.
Hi John it’s me Christopher Craig just to let you know that I watched your flog off the tide runs it won’t beat the real music what we listen to now it is sold me is it me up at the park me to excitement what I mean excitement it gives me a lot of energy what I watch Tydehams I actually had to go before with one of them over here in Northern Ireland so hitting them drums you need to have muscles and energy you are right about that one so thank you Jon I hope to talk to you on live tell me what time when the next live streamq

Wow o-o
Thanks John, thats Kodo, I do remember seeing them at stanford in 95, was there Great Sound !! They have a site ?
I've watched that movie "The Haunted". This practice is intense but amazing! I'm blown away with their practice performance!!! Are they performing here in Las Vegas???
If you could combine Taiko drums with bagpipes, you'd have the ultimate fighting music.
This is a freakin’ awesome combo!! I wonder if they’d ever done this - would live to hear it if they swing by the UK, Scotland 🏴
I'm having flashbacks of the drum solo in Iron Butterfly's - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida .
I love this Channel. There's always something for me to watch when I get back from work. Keep it going! I really recommend this to everyone
They are amazing! Unlike any other taiko drummers I’ve ever heard. When I closed my eyes I could see the hunt. Thank you for bringing such great content to us!
I have no choice John. It's 3:34 am Wednesday Dec. 30th, 2020. 🛌
You should visit Anjo City. There is a gentleman that makes the largest sushi in the world. 🤩🤩🤩👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I saw the video too 😂
@@onlyinjapanGO so you have a food challenge in your future? 😉😂
なんかちょっと英語理解できてうれしい
I can hear you master atari, i can hear you...😭😭😭😭🤘🤘🤘🤘
Remember the movie The Hunted, it was starring Christopher Lambert.
It’s amazing that Kodo did the music for it!! They’ve done a few commercials on TV here recently too.
AMAZING!! Can non-Japanese (myself) come over to Japan and do the two year apprenticeship?
If you have a passion for taiko, there are some non-Japanese in the group. It is SUPER CHALLENGING to be an apprentice, but not impossible. I always say in life, you gotta go for it sometimes esp if it’s where your passion lies
@@onlyinjapanGO I would happly do it for sure! It does indeed!
The woman's drum solo at 17:00....what kind of drums are those?
I felt hunted for sure lol, got my blood pumping as If I was anyway 😨
2:12 lol that guy
John can you buy their music
If Alfred Hitchkock had hear this, he would create a new thriler. And who is singing (what the Fox say)?
Better than COFFEE ! What !😲 Nooooooo , it's great with coffee like I'm having now in bed. ☕☕☕☕🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭👅👅👅👅👅👅 🙆
