- Should you be worried to travel to Japan?
Over the last few months, many viewers have been asking me about this issue, STSS is a flesh eating bacterium that has been around for a long time but it’s increased a great deal the last year. I’ll break down the coverage and what we know now. #stss #japan
I just read about this recently. If it's not one thing, it's another.
You're not weird in wiping down a hotel rooms (especially the bathroom) when traveling. Since the pandemic, I wipe down everything. I even do it at work on items that everyone touches. Germs can spread so fast. You can't trust that other people wash their hands.
No one in Asia washes their hands, less then I've seen in the north America.
They wash in Japan, I stand next to dude in the bathroom and more pass the sink in the US than here, just FYI.

Ive observed people in Japan waving their hands under water, but soap isnt even provided in many public restrooms. More since covid but still not everywhere.

One of my daughters was just telling me about this bacteria a few weeks ago. I am planning to visit Japan in the spring and she just wanted to let me know what was going on so I’m glad you’re talking about this. I actually was waiting for you to talk about this.
I’m glad she brought it up. The media makes it out to be very scary, it’s rare and not something to worry about. I follow warning from the state department and NIID but there’s none at the moment. Just media reports of an increase. Knowledge is power and you’ll be fine 😊 I’m not worried, just I hate to get sick 🤧

There's nothing new about STSS, nor is it unique to Japan.
Practice common sense. Disinfect your wounds and seek medical help if you display symptoms. STSS can be killed with antibiotics, but time is of the essence.
Hi John! It's nice that you decided to talk about it, so that more people know. I read about it before a few weeks for the first time. It's not something that only exists in Japan, here, in Greece, I see that there are a few sites talking about it, and informing people on how to protect theirselves from it. In 2023 we had 89 cases, and in 2024 there seems to be a rise on the numbers, but I haven't found any specific numbers. People should just be careful wherever they go, and try to be hygienic. I wanted to wait until more data came in - honestly, it’s not worth worrying about yet but just people should know and washing hands, hygiene is important when traveling abroad. Hate to see anyone get sick here.
Im glad you tell folk about these things John, but is it not just fear mongering from the media?
Partially, as I showed, there is no alert for this by the US State Dept and they’d advise us if it were a real threat well before we got there. My point is to check up on ALL potential issues before traveling abroad 😉 all tourists should and most do not do their due diligence with international travel. 1000 sick, 300 fatal is scary but it’s still so rare, it’s not to worry about.
"Fear mongering". Aha... The action of intentionally trying to make people afraid of something when this is not necessary or reasonable. SInce when is stating facts and reporting about things "fear mongering"? What is "the media" (whoever "they" are) supposed to do? Not say anything? And before you say they should report less frequently, that is also bad since situations and in this case scientific data changes almost hourly.
I went to Japan last month and I was impressed by the amount of japanese people that don’t wash their hands with soap after using public restroom. Just a bit of water and on their way. Considering trains is how everyone goes from A to B, I was increasingly hesitant to touch handrails and such.
Some places don’t have soap and if you don’t pee on yourself, I can get why guys don’t wash well, but they’re washing which is good compared to many other countries, some where the sink is so filthy washing might be worse than walking out and using a sanitizer! You’re not wrong to not want to touch things on public transport but they 100% clean them at the end of the day and terminus but just high use areas. Seats don’t get washed often. I always wash my hands after getting off the train. Not holding on in crowded trains / buses when standing could be dangerous so it’s advised to survive the ride then wash. If you’re thinking about it as much as me, welcome to the club 🦠 ❌ 😂
Have you seen how well wiped down trains are? Subways? Especially since the fear factory 4 years ago?

Thanks for the video. It is scary traveling sometimes and people naturally get worried when they read the headlines. I am planning on travel to Japan next summer and I am keeping an eye out of whats going on.
Been waiting for u to talk about this because im going to Japan in Nov this year. I think there’s no need to be overly cautious. Just practice personal hygiene and everything will be just fine.
Wear a mask ! In the airport, on the plane . We went to Japan in May . My husband wore a mask . I did not . Upon return, I caught a terrible case of Covid. Hot fire surging through my muscles . I soaped up my hands everywhere. Wear a mask . ❤

Wearing a mask at the airport makes sense, esp around a lot of people coming from everywhere. Wash hands regularly is more important IMO. Wipe down seats. It’s that darn TSA and the crowds there that always concerns me. I’m sorry you got sick, glad you’re better now.
@@onlyinjapanGO Thanks ! I don’t think I caught it in Japan because we avoided crowds . We went to Kyoto so we went early to all sights , shops, and restaurants because of the crowds . The airports are crazy busy ! All my friends going on other trips comment on it . The planes are packed . People are sneezing everywhere . I thought I was safe because it was summer . No . 🤷♂️
ummmm, there are STSS cases here at home in the US too.....395.cases so far this year. Most cases are in the Gulf Coast and rising cases in the East Coast. Warm brackish water, even in very warm ocean water are areas where you 'might' catch it.
There are so many things we “could” catch - concerning the numbers rising by 2.8x this year but nothing to worry about yet. Keep an eye on US EMBASSY alerts before any international trip, the best thing any traveler abroad should due.
My main concern is if it is one of those infections that can be airborne. If it requires a wound to really get into you then I’ll probably not care.
As you said this is nothing new. Back in Hawaii about 10 years, this was shared by the media. When you get a cut or open wound, treat it right away no longer how small. Wash it, put ointment and cover it. Do proper wound care.
Right, in light of the sensational media stories, it’s a good reminder that it’s not new and we should keep practicing good hygiene.

I just got back from Tokyo few days ago. Thank God, i didnt experience any sickness while I'm there.I went to Tokyo on the 14th June and the news did got me concerned. Perhaps the media is probably blowing it out of proportion or our perception of how serious it is largely influenced by the word [deadly, rare, and flesh eating] accompanied with it.
But of course still exercise caution but don't let it hinder too much of your enjoyment during your trip there.
My father died from such a disease. As you say be alert but not be alarmed .It has been and on-going a disease picked up in a hospital situation especially if your immune system is already weak and the hospital is lax in its cleanliness.
I’m very sorry to hear about your father. It’s a good time to be reminded that it’s rare to get and we need to be mindful that this is out there, good hygiene can prevent more than getting sick from this.
I think it’s going up recently because of the warmer waters so the risk is higher than it used to be 20 years ago
Could be, interesting to see what researchers find over the year. NIID is working on it.
Necrotizing fasciitis is no joke it took me years to recover from only to end up with c-diff due to the antibiotics I was taking.. both tried to take me out

Yeah, and since it's a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics easily

When sepsis sets in and isn’t detected soon enough/IV and supporting care is late, then mortality is high. I’ve personally experienced multiple cases like this. IV high dose amoxicillin + clindamycin and hospital ICU admission, young 40ish woman - didn’t make it.
I will go to Tokyo for several days in August or September. Is there any information about where the infections happen? Countryside? Major cities?
This is why i Always bring Clorox Wipes especially when using Public Bathrooms.
When traveling out of town or even to other countries always buy a small can of odorless Lysol and Clorox wipes. Always wipe down or spray the stuff your skin will be in contact to. Toilet seats, Hotel bed sheets, Pillow cases, you get the gist.
Lately chatgtp has been very lackluster, unless you pay the full version, although those general advises were good
I am currently paying for it and everyone has 4.0 now I believe. For general info it’s good but I always double check. What if does it point you in the right (or a) direction and we have to confirm it. This was mostly common sense with good hygiene.

This is a concerning topics as I may be reliant on a medical specialist to get the 'Ok' to fly to Japan. I'm immunocompromised and could be starting immunotherapy in a few months. I'm going to be devastated if this news means I cannot fly.
Thank you for the good, sensible info. It’s not at epidemic levels and there is effective treatment for Group A strep. Practicing good, general hygiene can prevent it.
I Lol’d 😂when you talked about disinfecting high touch surfaces in hotels and airplane seats. I had my share of travel related nasty illnesses like influenza, norovirus, etc. Not life threatening, but miserable for a few days. Now a little germaphobic. I do the same thing you do even before the p’demic.
Don’t forget to disinfect the germiest thing in a hotel room - the TV remote! (They did studies that showed it grew out more microorganisms than the toilet seat).

this is more prevalent in gyms and jujitsu mats, because of lack of hygiene from the establishment and of course some people who don't shower very often so yeah its common but not that common for the average folks, its more like fear mongering sheesh
That’s the point of this episode, it’s concerning but there’s no warning for it and it’s not an issue for tourism, but it’s always good to know and a chance to remember good hygiene when traveling abroad.

Water is fine :) tap water is very delicious outside the cities. 1000 out of a population of 125M so the odds are small. The media over hypes it but the numbers are rising and the implications are not good - as always, a time to remember good hygiene and health.

I found synthetically made V-C does not have much impact. Use lemon in water, eat strawberries or blueberries, tomatoes etc. it’s 100% better. V-D3 and Zinc are supplements I take daily with a break every 3 months.
I strongly believe Onsen may play some role into this disease.
No, I stronly believe over tourism and the lacking hygienic practices of most tourists is playing a role into this. Because this bacteria has been around for a while and there have been several outbreaks in the U.S before as well as in other countries. Japanese hygienic behaviour is several levels higher than most countries which is why it is not common for diseases to spread form person to person there. I am not concerned about that in Japan. This is also why many onsen do not feel comfortable allowing foreigners into onsen because they are considered as dorty and whether ppl like it or not compared to the behaviours of the Japanese on cleanliness the majority of other cultures are less concerned about that. Tatoos also being a risk, not just for their bad reputation culturally but the skin injury risks they present. The only factor that has changed is the exorbitant amounts coming int such a small country from all over the world. I am more convinced this has been broughtor triggered form aborad and a combination of people's lowered immunity.

@@LarindarrAs per the official data from the JNTO, we are getting around 3 million tourists a month (vs 120 million locals). So they are accounting for LESS than 3% of all individuals in the country at any given time. Get a grip. Also hygienic standards? Do we live in the same Japan?! I swear most of the men here do not wash their hands after using the bathroom - not that half the public restrooms even have soap in the first place.

The only thing you go right about your word pasta - and this is even if you meant this - is that scientists believe it's due to the lockdowns and how we 'owe' immunity. This is why so many othe viral and bacterials infections have been bonkers ever since the lockdowns went away.

Hygiene is important, soap saves lives so tell that to the Tokyo subway toilets, no paper, no soap, lots of people.

Baby’s are not one of the risk groups according to NIID, but it’s a good idea to wipe kids hands after public transport and touching a lot of public stuff anyway when traveling abroad. Just good practice.

The way it’s covered is over the top but the point of this is to check the embassy notices before any international trip. There is none for this so that means it’s highly overblown. However, it’s good to know what STSS is as the trend is up and surely more news will over hype it again.
