Personally, I think the reason behind the new Sultan, Salim, threat to kill Ezio had Suleiman not spoke highly of him is a bit related to Tarik's death. Tarik and Salim were closed friends.

Poopsie Pop I think the most reprehensible thing Ezio did in this is to quickly accept killing Tarik under Suleiman’s suspicion. In Brotherhood he was careful not to pin Machiavelli as a traitor, going so far as to rush and save him from being murdered by Volpe under the same suspicion. But here? He questions Suleiman, but goes with his plan either way. I was expecting a wiser Ezio, at least interrogating Tarik.

It's subtle, but Tarik being marked for death by Suleiman foreshadows a pattern that would repeat in his reign: He suspects of a person, has them executed....only to find out they weren't necessarily against him.
