The Reddit investors behind this situation don't care about the company's valuation, they care about destroying the hedge fund that was profiting from driving GameStop into the ground. They know the company isn't really worth much, but they saw an opportunity to stick it to the same 1%ers that destroyed the market in 2008 and got away with it.

No sympathy for the hedge funds here, but they and the algos are making money off of both sides of the stock price... the shorting is just a hedge for their long position for many of them.
