A duet of science and art | Fanyi Zeng | TEDxChaoyangWomen

Fanyi come up with the concept of “Science stems from crossover”. According to her, the relationship between science and art is just like the crash between rigor and romance. As Einstein said, “ Both science and art come from the fountain of hope. That is balm to our life.”
Fanyi compares music to a stepping stone on her way of studying. Her singing impressed the professor in University of Pennsylvania, who has helped her to embark on the road of studying medicine. Besides, she also got comfort from music, which kept her peace and calm even in the hard research environment. Having been remained off school for two years, she even fortified by her belief - Follow her inner heart; Follow her dream to fulfill herself - on her way of pursuing life as a Beijing drifter. To her, art is the wing of science’s imagination, and science makes the dream of art come true.
Professor Fanyi Zeng received her B.A. in University of California San Diego, CA, USA in 1991. In 2005, she got her Ph.D in University of Pennsylvania, PA, USA. Currently, she works as the president of Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics at SJTU and director of the Ministry of Health’s pilot laboratory in embryonic molecular biology. Besides a scientist who was awarded as the Youth Female Scientist by the Third World Organization for Women in Science, Zeng is also an artist who has released her own albums and performed solo concerts in the United States and China.
