He would lock the defence down and not allow anyone to come close by cutting each passing lane along with other greats like Nesta. How he never won the Ballon D’or I’ll never know. Just because attackers score goals and are creative they always seem to win it. But Maldini was unquestionably the best player in his position and the best defender in the world for years. He took defending to a whole new level. His timing, intelligence, positioning, game reading was outstanding. He was a better defender than attackers were at attacking. Simply the best

    • @blabla-rg7ky
      @blabla-rg7ky 3 месяца назад +1

      if he was to ever win Ballon d'Or it would have had to be in his peak years (which is 2000 to 2007), but during those years both Kaka and Shevchenko had won it for Milan, so my assumption is that the voters didn't want to reward it to another Milan player (although, let's not forget that Pirlo, too would have deserved the trophy in those years) so as not to be accused of bias. But, in reality, we all know that the almighty AC Milan have had at least 4 players that could have won the trophy at ANY time during those years were this trophy to be rewarded fair and square. But after this injustice, the moronic voters went ahead and gave the trophy only to Messi and Penaldo for over a decade, even though there were times when Messi didn't deserve it. In the 2011 season, for example, Messi had been injured most of the season and he only played 10-12 games (I don't remember the exact number), and I think he still won the Ballon d'Or at the expense of Riibbery, Robben, Lahm, Neuer or Alaba who have won the UCL that season. This just shows you how corrupt this trophy had become in the last 15 years or so....
      Or in 2013 (I believe) when Real Madrid had only won Copa del Rey and yet, Penaldo had won Ballon d'Or instead of - once again - Ribbery or Robben, or even Drogba / Terry / Lampard who were killing that season.
      So yeah... tell me more about how fair this trophy is when legends like Pirlo or Maldini carry the teams on their backs for a decade while Messi / Penaldo don't even play and they still win it....

    What people also forget is how important some of these games were, in which he produced so many great defensive performances...finals and semi-finals of major tournaments like the World Cup, the Champions League, and the Euros, as well as big domestic games as well against top opponents (both clubs and players) and in key games during a given season. He won it all with Milan (he once held the record for most Serie A title victories when his career spanned the era in which it was the greatest league we've ever seen, with seven world class teams and some of the greatest players, defenders, and goalkeepers ever), set a record for least goals conceded and most clean sheets and consecutive minutes without a goal in Serie A and the World Cup (the former has since been broken), and came up against all the greats, and also holds the record for most Champions League/European Cup victories and final appearances, keeping several clean sheets and had a man of the match performance in one of them and a goal in one defeat. Only bad luck prevented him from winning a title with Italy, which he so deserved, but he came close on many occasions, as demonstrated by the fact that he was included in the World Cup all-time team and was often included in the team of the tournament. And while he was arguably the greatest tackler I've ever seen along with Nesta (and the greatest defender I've seen along with Baresi and Nesta), he usually didn't tackle unless he needed to, which is even more impressive.
    Maldini really had it all...an impeccable leader, a classy player, who was precocious, consistent, and who had incredible longevity, and who could play in any defensive position (as he demonstrated during the 1994 World Cup) or even in midfield if necessary. He really had everything you wanted in a defender: two-footedness, versatility, timing, tackling, marking, anticipation, recovering, reading of the game, positioning, organisational skills, tactical intelligence, proficiency in one-one-one situations, physical power/strength, heading/elevtaion/athleticism/aerial prowess, pace, energy, awareness, concentration, composure, mentality, breavery, decisiveness, technique, elegance, passing, crossing, creativity, and attacking drive, both when playing on the flank or up the middle as a libero...the one thing which one might consider a possible "weakness," which maybe impeded him from being virtually "perfect" (not that I would call them that personally though), is that he didn't have the offensive qualities or goalscoring or shooting abilities, both in open play and from dead ball situations, of certain defenders such as Koeman, Hierro, Roberto Carlos, Vierchowod, Materazzi, or Ramos, but having said that he always chipped in with a few goals, and also contributed with assists as well, and I still believe that as a defender, one should be able to defend first and foremost...and aside from goals, he had it all, and I think that's even more impressive looking back on him today when technique and ball playing ability are valued more in defenders.

    people thought come here and see many legendary slides and tackles, but once maldini said "if i have to tackle that means that i've already done a mistake", if you're positioning is good the opponent players doesnt have even the space to challenge you, that's why players like wan bissaka do many good tackles but they always leaves too space for the opponents, to understand the ability of maldini you have to watch the entire match not highlights on yt

    Clean tackle. Always aim for the ball. Not the legs. What a legend.

    As Juve fan, I totally agree 👍
    He used to set up a show on the left side .... beautyful to watch too: his defence had style.
    But he was so effective and passionate too. Athletic and technic at the highest level, winning mentality and heart of a champion.
    Correct and respectful.
    He had all.
    He would dominate nowadays too
    PM3 .. Milan's and Italy's pride 🇮🇹

    When I think about Fair Play the first player who comes in my mind is Paolo Maldini! Strong but elegant, tough defender but he always tackled searching for the ball

    Back then, if you got tackled, you’d get up like it was nothing. Now, we have little children who whine on the floor for 5 minutes and cry about it.
