Easter egg decorating

  • Years ago, as a family, we had lots of eggs that we had decorated which unfortunately got smashed several years ago. So I decided to start a new collection with my kids who are now adults! These are the eggs laid by the Aracana hens, so they are quite small. I have a personal rule that I won’t eat, or sell, fertile eggs, it’s just my own peculiarity, and these birds have a cockerel with them. So this idea occurred to me. We had a huge amount of fun, which is, after all, the whole idea.

Oh, my mom did this years ago when I was a kid and hung them on a branch from our back yard. I remember her blowing the eggs out and thinking, hmm…okay. 😂 Now I think I’d try it myself!

Loved watching this. Looking really good. We did the first eggs ever this year with my 3 year old. It was so nice :) A trick we do in Norway is to tie the string around a piece of a match stick, poke it through the hole, and when you pull at the thread the stick goes horrisontal, almost like an anker. Classic trick :)

Genius! Gluing fabric scraps. Who knew? (You knew:o) Another cool thing is to colored tissue paper that bleeds when it gets wet. Tear it into little pieces and stick to eggs with water. When dry, peel off the tissue. For the ribbons, I use a really long needle and run the ribbon all the way through and tie a bow at the end. You can add a ribbon rose, too. I've also used clear stretchy stuff used to make stretchy bracelets and hang Swarovski crystals. Craft on!

The Last Homely House East of the Sea - We landed back home last Wednesday while you were filming part 4 of the Easter quilt, and we still can't seem to get to sleep before 4am!
I had my first day back at work today, though heaven knows what I actually did! I'm trying to get as much sun and garden as I can to get back in rythm with nature in this part of the world. We had the *_best_* time! 😃 Amsterdam was just magical! We had no plans, and just made each day up as we felt like it. I didn't manage to find the cafe though, the weather conspired against us when we went to the market near there, so I guess we saved you the cost of a cuppa 😁

I started watching this for the chickens and ended up here. My mom is Polish and we take Easter very, very seriously in my family.
What she used to do is bend a piece of fine wire in half--about a foot long so six inches--and cross the ends twice to form a loose loop.
Then she'd thread it through the egg, put some string or ribbon through the loop and pull it back through the egg and secure it on both ends with a knot. She puts up an egg tree every year with branches from one of her flowering trees and some of them she made over 50 years ago.
By the way your daughter really looks like you.

Oh you have so much fun! How wonderful that your adult children came by to help. Did this w/ my children when they were young - did wax relief as well. They loved decorating eggs and we did varnish a few favs each year and save but eventually w/ moving house several times they are sadly all gone. We would hang on flowering branches or willow branches I forced to bloom. I will have to take a wet walk in swamp today and look for pussy willows to bring in. The trees around my house are all decorated w/ little yellow and purple finches - it is mating season and they are all pairing off. Wish I could get a photo but too grey and foggy outside. I love Spring!!! Have a wonderful Easter/Spring.

The eggs are high enough the cats won't think you just made them some fancy toys to play with. lol The cats had a fine meal with the left over eggs, I'm sure they were licking their lips after that. :) Now for a nice long cat nap. Have a great day!

Beautiful! Your project reminded me of the first time I painted eggs for ornaments. I was in nursing school and we were to decorate the Christmas tree in the hospital main lobby. While the class was collecting the eggs for the project, I saw a sleeve of tin can lids from my grandfathers store (he died before I was born) The cans were no longer suitable to use for food processing so the cans and lids were designated for craft projects. So anyway, we decorated the eggs and canlids for the tree. for the can lids, we painted designs as desired and most of us glued ribbon, beads, etc in the outer rim of the lid to frame our artwork. For the eggs, we put a small hole on the pointy end of the egg, larger hole in the bigger end, washed them out, let them dry, then used a long large eyed needle and threaded it with small ribbon or yarn, made a knot bigger than the small hole and still small enough to go in large hole. Next we threaded the egg from the big end and out the top so the knot would be resting under the small hole inside the egg, clipped the needle off and tied a small bow or knot at the top as desired. For the single loop like you made, we threaded the needle with our ribbon or string, knotted only a single strand , threaded the egg as above but since it is single thickness, took the needle back down through the top, looping the string around a pencil or other small object (prevents our hanging loop from going back into egg) back on the rounded end of the egg, remove the needle, knot the string and use the pencil if needed to help pull the looped end up in position. You now have two knots inside your eggshell and a single loop on top coming from the small hole to hang your ornament. next- paint/decorate as desired. The favorite two designs I did for my eggs were 1) painting small holly leaves with 2-3 small red berries- scattered around the ornament and 2) painted the egg a dark blue background surrounding a nativity scene. I stored my egg ornaments in eggcartons and brought them out year after year. ..... I had not thought to glue fabric to them... Beautiful job. I will have to do that again... not sure I have the air power to blow those eggs... that is a job.

I just remembered the concern and fear my classmates had at the thought of decorating canlids... the sharp edges... until they saw there were no sharp edges- these lids were never used- had never been placed on cans - the area that seals to the can was the rim that was decorated to frame the ornament- also the area used to punch a hole for the hanger.... Thanks for the memories.

Rebecca Foust wonderful! I can really picture all that you say - the knot in the large hole and pulled through to the small would have worked better on these eggs - the glue worked , but your way I’d better.
I love making things from discarded ‘rubbish’ I’ve been wanting to replace the eggs that were broken years ago for a while now - this was such a lovely project to do with my kids xxxxx
      Thank you for sharing that

Hello Kate, easter is coming again even though it is 2 years later now. You asked for another way to put the hangers in. We used wooden matches but I guess little tree branches would work too. Just break them down into little pieces that fit into the top of the egg, tie the hanger around it and push the little match with the knot vertical through the hole in the egg. The match repositions itself horizontally inside the egg and holds it that way. It is harder to explain than to actually make. Have a creative day!

Suggestion: Change the big hole to the small end of the egg. Run the ribbon on a long needle through the big hole pointy end so the knot stops inside the small hole end. A sequin or star or bit of pretty cut cloth can cover the big hole in the pointy end of the egg that doesn't have the ribbon coming through. They are wonderful hanging from the chandelier )))

Liberty is a very iconic uk brand. It’s a shop primarily, Liberty of London, selling a whole host of beautiful and expensive things from a very amazing building. The fabric is much thinner than ordinary cotton, more like silk to feel, but it’s the designs, they have become famous over more than a century. I use them to make quilts .....
