Lucky enough to watch the best basketball player ever to put on shoes. Wilt chamberlain! Jerry West is all around great player, smart. Elgin Baylor was so fun to watch with his crazy moves. So underrated
Drop Jerry into the league today and he's getting BUCKETS. People don't understand what kind of athlete he was, his ultra-competitiveness, and just how fast he could get his shot off. Wilt would make any team an instant title contender, he'd be Defensive Player of the Year, MVP, and Scoring Champ. 35/15/5 with 5 bpg.
Try 35/20/8 with 6 bpg. He averaged 24.5 rebounds for a career! He’s easily pulling down 20 against league that definitely does not prioritize rebounding as much as they did in the 60s and 70s.
And the assists would be at least 8 per game because he averaged 4.4 for a career, but when he decided to take more of a role as a passer, became the only center to ever lead the league in assists. Now consider that assists were much more strict back then, making them much harder to get. Wilt would draw so much attention, just like Giannis, and easily dish out dimes to three point shooters all game. Wilt could pass behind the back, deep outlet passes on the dime multiple times per game, throw one handed passes while palming the ball away from the defender and dropping it right into his teammates shooting pocket. I think Wilt would find passing and getting assists to be very easy in today’s game, and might even be motivated to go for triple double seasons, just to fuck around like he did back then.
Also in the 100 games where his blocks were tracked, he averaged 8.8 a game, with three games of over 20 blocks! Team statisticians tracked those games because the NBA didn’t record blocks or steals until… surprise surprise… the year after Wilt left the league.
@@lukekiefer5964 I lowballed so as not to offend anyone in denial about Wilt being the greatest player of all time. He would definitely average 20+ boards, bordering on 30+ if players like Giannis and Jokic can haul in 17-20 routinely.
Wilt didn't join l.a. Lakers until 1969; wilt was getting old & knee surgery was coming; Elgin Baylor had knee surgery & getting old Gail Goodrich jump nba basketball teams ; only Jerry west was steady ;; 1969/ 1970 l.a Lakers missed Gail Goodrich
This is odd to say, but Jerry West takes his defender the same way Michael Jordan did. No need to cross his guy over, he hesitates and attacks. Great to see this!!! Very eye opening.
Also he defends much greater than MJ and any other guard did with his insane wingspan and iq of poking the ball away, playing passing lanes and even uncanny shot blocking. Him and Walt Frazier insane guard defenders
West was a FAR better defender than people realize. They only started keeping track of steals his last year and in 31 games with a broken down 35 year old body he averaged 2.6 steals a game with one game having an incredible 10, one off the record. EXCEPT they only had stats for 26 of the games so his real average was slightly above 3. That would have led the NBA in all but 9 years since 1974. Supposedly in his prime he could almost steal the ball at will and I know I've seen clips of him just taking the ball possession after possession.. like 4 or 5 times in a row.
I was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York and my favorite player was Elgin Baylor. It was always a special occasion whenever ABC aired a Lakers game and I got to see him play. The quality of this footage is beyond words. Thank you for your upload..
The shot by Baylor @ 2:23 is a H.O.R.S.E. shot in an NBA playoff game! No one today would even attempt a shot like that because he couldn't conceive a shot like that!
And Jerry (West) said no one would attempt and make some of the shots he'd take and make regularly. Wilt said he was the best he ever saw at twisting his body and using "english" off the glass with shots like the one you mentioned here.
Seeing them play in real-time is awesome. It makes you appreciate the talent of these guys, when prior to the video Ive seen was outta sink or sped up or down...never quite rt. but this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW more please..
Connie Hawkins was an amazing player. He may have had the biggest hands in NBA history. As for the 1969-1972 Laker "Superteam," Baylor was not the same player having suffered knee injuries. West was the main gun. Chamberlain was actually "Chamberlain #2 because Wilt stopped trying to score. By 1971, Wilt was basically defense, rebounding, and passing although he could score if need be. Wilt was first-team all-defense with West in 1971-72 and 1972-73.

@@lloydkline1518 Russell had five fouls. Sam Jones had fouled out already. Even though West was red hot, Wilt could have done whatever he wanted against Russell. But the real reason the Lakers lost is because of team dissension. Wilt hated Van Breda Kolff and Van Breda Kolff hated Wilt.
I really wish modern basketball had this level of ball movement and teamwork involved. The game back then was so much more team oriented and everyone could pass.
Thank you for this footage & the incredible quality. Despite this great trio winning one championship, i would love to see them healthy in a 4 yr span. Looking forward to your 4k Wilt videos & this video shows a great intricate detail adding to Wilt's legacy....Wilt is the 1st superstar center to hit clutch free throws to win an NBA finals series. Wilt's offensive diversity was vastly underrated, it was his kind demeanor & lacking on court aggression that held him back from being Shao Khan
The sound of Wilts dunks! And imagine a coach today saying they would make sure a player from the other team wouldn't make the end of a game...don't think they were that brazen in the "rough and tumble" 90s.
Wilt joins Jerry/Elgin in the 1968-69 season. Very first regular season game together, they got crushed by Wilt's old team, the Sixers. The big three all have good games, especially Elgin (36 pts, 15 rebounds) but they don't get much support from the rest of the team. They get their first win as a group in the very next game, defeating the Knicks 118-96 with Wilt leading the way (29 pts on 13-15 shooting, and 23 rebounds). They played together for a total of 55 games in 1968-69 regular season. In the games where all three played, the Lakers record was 38-17 (0.691). This would translate roughly to 56 wins over an 82-game schedule. And the Lakers actually finished the year with 55 wins. The most points they combined for in the 1968-69 regular season occurred on 1/26/69 against the Royals. Jerry scored 18, Baylor 20 and Wilt exploded for 60.
Their success was mitigated by age, injury and of course working out chemistry (Baylor and Wilt both needed the left block but without the other so they basically needed to take turns). Of course the whole Butch VB debacle as well. This video isn’t meant to imply they were successful just show how great their potential was because they really did show glimpses of tremendous potential even in this footage it’s clear. I think they just needed more youth and time together!
In the 1968-69 post-season, the Big Three played together in all 18 games (Warriors, Hawks, Celtics). They were 11-7 in those games. West was clearly the star, averaging 30.89ppg. Baylor was second at 15.39 and Wilt a somewhat disappointing 13.89. (Wilt did improve on his rebounding in the post-season, grabbing 24.7rpg). Their highest scoring (90 pts) post-season game as a threesome came in the first game victory against the Celtics in the Finals, on 4/23/69. In this case, West dominated by scoring 53 points. Baylor chipped in with 24 and Wilt with 13.
In the 1969-70 season, the Big Three played together in only 11 games. The main reason was that Wilt got hurt early in the season and required knee surgery. Amazingly, he came back for the last 3 Lakers games of the regular season. He had actually gotten off to a great start. In his first 9 games before the injury, he was averaging 33ppg. It makes me wonder if there was some emphasis being placed on having Wilt score more. By the time Wilt returned near the end of the season, he was understandably a different player. The surgery had taken its toll on his mobility. It still amazes me that he was able to return within the same season after a serious knee surgery, especially considering it was nearly 50 years ago when rehabilitation was not what it is today. In the few games in which they played together in the 1969-70 regular season, the Big Three put up some impressive numbers, breaking a combined 90 pts three times. Their best scoring output was in the 3rd game of the season, on 10/21/69, when Jerry (39), Wilt (38) and Elgin (21) combined for 98 points. For the 11 games that they played in together, the Lakers' record was 7-4. In the 1969-70 post-season, the Big Three again played together in all the game (Suns, Hawks, Knicks). They improved, relative to last season, to 11-6 but once again came up short, losing the classic Game 7 to the Knicks in the Finals. Mr Clutch Jerry West once again led the Big Three by a substantial margin in scoring - he ave 31.22ppg, Wilt was next at 22.11ppg, and Baylor ave 18.67ppg. It is worth noting that in one of the games against the Suns in the first round, Baylor only played 4 min. Their greatest scoring output in the playoffs was 88 points they put against the Suns in the very first game (Baylor 32, Wilt 29, West 27).
In the 1970-71 season, the situation got even worse for the Big Three. Baylor played just two games before rupturing his achilles tendon. West injured his knee, and played in 69 games, but - like Baylor - missed the playoffs. Wilt played in all 82 games, and - as the only member of the Big Three in the playoffs - led the Lakers to a series win over the Bulls. Gail Goodrich had a great series for the Lakers. In the Western Conf Finals, the Lakers were matched up against Jabbar and the Bucks. Gail Goodrich couldn't repeat the excellent performance he enjoyed in the Bulls series. When Keith Erickson also got hurt, the Lakers had no chance and they lost to the Bucks in 5 games. Wilt averaged 22ppg/ 18.8rpg while Jabbar averaged 25.0ppg / 17.2rpg in the series.
1971-72 is the legendary season for the Lakers, and it's also the season in which Baylor retired. He played the first 9 games of the season, and then decided to hang it up. In those first 9 games, Jerry West missed 5 of those games. The Big Three only played together in 4 games and in those games, the Lakers were 4-0. Two interesting sidenotes: most fans are aware that the game after Baylor retired is when the Lakers started their 33-game win streak. But what most may not be aware of is that because West missed those 5 games early in the year, he had an individual streak of playing in 37 consecutive winning games in the 1971-72 season. And if you go back to the 1970-71 regular season, the last four games West played in were all Laker wins. So, over two seasons, West played in 41 consecutive games won by the Lakers. The tally for the Big Three over the 4 seasons is therefore: 72 games played together, with a record of 50-22 in those games. They only played together in the playoffs the first two years, because injuries to Baylor and West prevented them from participating as a trio the final two seasons. In those 2 years, they made it to the Finals twice, losing both in 7 games. Overall, their playoff record as a trio is 22-13. Summing it all up, the Big Three were a combined 72-35 in the regular and post season. Interesting sidenote is that 32% of all the games they played together was in the post-season.
Holy Crap!!! Elgin Baylor doing something besides the Jumpshot. They tell you how Great he is then show you his jumper? Aboit time for film of this guy Doing ehat made him Great and not just Jumpers!!! Good work
The "Superteam" of Baylor, Chamberlain, and West really never had a chance to materialize. 1969 was the only year that they were all relatively healthy, with a combined total of only 28 regular season games missed (21 by West) and none of them missed any playoff games, but their coach was terrible and likely cost them the title. Still they made it to game 7 of the Finals against the Celtics. In 1970, Wilt missed all but 70 regular season games with a knee injury and was not in shape when he returned, Baylor was hobbled (missing 28 games), and even West missed 8 games and was dealing with leg injuries in the playoffs, but they still made it to game 7 of the Finals vs the Knicks. 1971, saw Baylor miss 80 games and West 13 and neither played at all in the post season, but Wilt still led them to the Conference Finals, where a great Milwaukee team over-matched them in 5 games. In 1972, they finally hired a good coach (Bill Sharman) and had a season for the ages, winning a still-record 33 consecutive games, and a season record at the time of 69 games, finishing with a championship; but they did it all without Baylor, who retired after 9 games. Wilt was Finals MVP, despite playing with 2 injured hands, as they defeated the Knicks in 5 games. 1973 was was Wilt's last year, and he and West again lost in the Finals to the Knicks, with West playing on a bad leg. If they had been together in their primes, NBA history would be completely different, as it is very likely they would have taken several titles away from the Celtics, but as it was, their time together didn't begin until West was 30, Wilt was 32, and Baylor 34 with bad knees.
Thank you for explaining why they couldn't win a championship together. At least,Wilt & Jerry got one.Just a few years earlier perhaps,in good health, they would of been very hard to beat.I always how a young Wilt & Oscar together would of done against the Celtics.
Such great footage. Basketball at its purest. It’s cool seeing the ppl in the stands actually watching the game too and not having a phone stuck to their face. Wish I could’ve been alive in those times
Wilt put more fannies in seats than anyone even the 8 time defending champion Celtics who rarely sold out at home but did when Wilt Chamberlain came to town
Such great looking footage - well done! It's a shame (although I'm a lifetime 76ers fan) that these three couldn't have played longer together - and when they were a little younger/healthier. Still, you can see some of their skills, with West (being youngest and closest to prime) still close to his peak here.
By the time Goodrich rejoined the Lakers the trio of Baylor, Wilt and West probably played less than a dozen games together due to their age and constant injuries - perfect opportunity for Goodrich's steady scoring contributions
@@WiltChamberlainArchive Yeah Elgins legs were jello from the million dunks he landed in his career and Gail was on the suns but still when these guys were at their most winning and successful Gail Goodrich was the #1 bucket getter

Elgin playing with essentially one hand on so many of these plays amazes me. As someone with average to small hands (I can palm a woman's basketball, but not men's) I am always so enamored when players can make the ball look like a softball.
Connie to me is the biggest what if story. Had they let him come in his prime right after first year of college he’d be top 10 ever. Boston Celtics was the first structured team (superior team) from top to bottom and while they won consistently, when wilt chamberlain had a healthy team with players the equal of the celtics, they matched or beat them!

@@allistermcginlay6476 Or if we look at it the other way Celtics always stepped up in crunch time and I particularly remember 69 finals although the end result makes it look very close but actually Celts had already attained a massive lead and game was over.. eventually with bench guyz on floor Lakers made a later rush but couldn't reach it. So I honestly doubt that they were Championship material.. I mean forget Celtics they lost to Willis Reed's Knicks, Kareem's Bucks similarly close games but ended up loosing.
@@mayankrathi7333 a healthy team was essential for the team winning, matching a team is also important, but Elgin was prone to many injuries at the later end of his career and bad management decisions didn't help the situation!
@mayankrathi7333 the big three in a two year period only played 14 games together because of injuries...the Boston Celtics had great players coming of the bench without exception, even to the point their bench players would be on the starting five of many other teams in the nba!
Kareem deserves any praise he gets as with Oscar his teammate. But just for context on this big 3, West and Baylor were both injured and DNP in the 1971 season Playoffs (when Milwaukee won it all). It was Wilt and the Lakers limping along with out the other two superstars. That was the big problem with this team, in 4 years together they barely ever played as all 3 on the team. Mostly 1 or 2 of them were injured at any given time. Too old and injury prone to really keep it together and iron out their chemistry
@@WiltChamberlainArchive And you know how much Kareem respects Oscar. I would even say he probably considers him his 1st pro mentor. He does not consider Mike or Magic to be better than him.
Good question! 80’s team has more size and talent I’d think, 60s were so so good at execution though from what I can see on film especially their fast breaks. I would hate to pick, probably the answer depends on the era rules chosen for the game. 60s team is nearly unbeatable with 60s rules. 80s and it leans heavier toward the 80s team ofc
@@WiltChamberlainArchive I agree. tommy heinsohn once said that they can beat 80s celtics because they were more faster and have a better bench. He said speed beats size.

I'm glad you did that with footage I found in recent months. The video looks phenomenal!
Keep on finding! Thank you so much for the acquisitions that’s hard work and you’ve done great at it!

West was an athletic phenom because he somehow managed to be so gargantuan on both sides of the floor
@@CapAnson12345 I remember first seeing him steal the ball multiple times watching 70s all star games I forget which one

Wilt wasn't same basketball after knee surgery either 1969; ❤️ Connie Hawkins; could dribble& handle the basketball like a guard ; unstoppable in the low post 📫 I hear defense was his weakness! ; don't know if 1966 years wilt last great nba basketball year
@@lloydkline1518 Speaking of Wilt's knee, in game 7 of the '69 Finals vs Boston, Wilt aggravated his knee in the 4th quarter. He requested to come out of the game. When his knee calmed down, he asked to be reinserted in the game and Butch Van Breda Kolf refused! Russell had 5 fouls but the Lakers had mounted a comeback led by Jerry West. Free throws! Wilt
That was Richie Guerrin - he actually got fined for saying that but yes that was quite a bold and crystal clear threat!

It just makes you appreciate Kareem's first championship run even more.
