Despite moving toward becoming one of the biggest economies of the world, poverty and hunger are the daily companions of a large portion of people in this country. There are still people living under bridges, on footpaths, in clumsy slums. Whenever the price rises, the middle classes and the lower classes are the hardest hit.

The present direction of our economy is clearly to please a particular class of our society. The government is clearly in the pursuit of fulfilling "class" interests. The government policies are so framed as to cause the least concern to that particular social clique. I am not saying that Nehru's policies were flawless. But his foreign policy was a realist one and it largely facilitated our economic development. We can't ignore the fact that India emerged as the champion of the Afro-Asian world under Nehru's leadership.
