My advice to anyone who really wants to be successful as an attorney here in the United States is to get a J.D instead of a LLM. I have many LLM friends from India who are constantly calling me up for constitutional questions. To really understand the underpinnings of American law you have to have a very thorough understanding of 1) The United States constitution. I don't mean just the articles of independence and the amendments, but you want to know why the framers made the arguments, you HAVE to read and understand the federalist papers ALL OF THEM 2) You have to have a firm grasp of civil procedure, which I don't think the LLM program covers very well 3) Legal writing, the J.D will prepare you to be a good legal writer. (I've proofread many briefs written by foreign LLM and they are not good). Take the LSAT and get a J.D.

every state in US requires its own state bar exam or one state bar exam is okay for the whole US ? and what exams i need to clear from India to study JD or LLM in USA ?

little correction one can practice as an attorney in California , if you are foreign trained attorney with a certificate of good standing at your home country. no need to pursue llm in california.just take the bar exam and you are good to practice law as attorney.

@@wajeeshah5445 NCA is mandatory even after LLB or LLM .. like for LLB you will have 6 exams and for LLM you will face 5 exams but it is to be given by everyone to be equivalent to canadian law after NCA you will do articling and Bar exam as well. Long process but you can appear for NCA exams in India as well . Thanks ! I hope I helped.

In order to practice in New York, you will need to pursue an LL.M. in the U.S. and then pass the NY Bar Exam.
(Section 520.6 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals) For foreign students, the bar rules allow a law degree that is durationally and substantively equivalent to a program of study at an approved law school in the United States, but this evaluation process takes very long. In most cases, it is better to successfully complete an additional program of study at an approved law school in the United States.
