Well, Ill never unhear that now
I see this a metaphor for someone ignoring their negative thoughts and allowing only the happy, though throughout the song they realise they can't keep everything negative hidden and have to face all their emotions. The ship is their mind, they have no crew and are the captain because it's ultimately a battle in their mind.
You've got your happy thoughts safe on that little boat, but you keep bottling up the negative ones, that bottle's going to fill. Or even, god forbid, someone (or some traumatic event) shakes it up.
You're the only one on that deck, frantically scrambling to do the job of what SHOULD be an entire crew, and you're going to fail if you keep it up, keep insisting it's your fight alone.
But you've made it this far, and it's been working fine until now, so it's hard to understand why it's suddenly so difficult. But the harder you try to go back to the old method, the faster you'll drown.
You could say they're *bottling* up their emotions?

@@TeamKyroCanAnimateFR you here from that animatic too?
I see this song as a huge metaphor for someone who is dealing with the flaws they see in themselves and is trying to improve themselves. They make a deal with themselves to improve themselves. Their thoughts are, however, dragging them lower the more they try to deal with their issues. They're trapped inside a bottle. Near the end of the song, I imagine them opening up to a close friend/family member about their thoughts and emotions and them making another deal with their friend/family member to start talking about their problems and emotions.
Agreed! It really does
This comment needs more attention. Ngl I kept thinking of an animatic idea for this song of what has happened to me and probably a lot of other this past year and this comment basically describes this last month for me.
💕💞💕💞
Agreed
I feel like this song is more about mental illness or flaws trying to tip the ship and destroy the happy memories in the glass box, but the memories keep the ship planted and unmoving. I feel like it’s a metaphor for the cycle of mental illness, you can’t get better without abandoning the past, but the future is even scarier.

Modern sea shanties are up there among the greatest things out there.
True
@Inari I dont think so
@Aether It's _about_ sailors but has 0 shanty energy besides that
@@yeethittter1285 I'd say it leans more towards folk. A lot of people use Sea Shanty as a term to encompass any folk song about sailors
What people view as shanties aren't even shanties.
A shanty requires a call and refrain. A leader sings a line, and the crew sings something back. This is because shanties were made to keep in time when working the ship.
But. People now use shanty to mean sea ballads as well. Which I can accept. Sea Ballads are songs about the sea or sailor life that were sung during down time or at a bar to raise morale and pass the time.
This is neither. Just happens to include a ship in some lines.
This would make for a good animatic

The quote "and you lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane" is a big mood for me.
A really depressing mood but a BIG mood
It took me until the last time he said "poppin the cork" to realize this song is a metaphor for drinking problems. More specifically, drinking problems with severe anxiety or depression.
I thought it was about bottled up emotions and issues, and eventually they pop the cork to try letting it all out, but it all comes out jumbled up, making him lose what made him feel sane

it fits one of my OCs as well, daaamn this song is SO good
Same! This is my OC's story (he was inspired by the Starset MV's, so you won't understand unless you watch them).
Lazarus (Laza, as he's called by his friends and family) lived in an orphanage with his sister Luna for a long time since their parents disappeared. He has depression and aphasia, and lost his left leg in a terrible accident. He can't quite put his feelings into words and often draws in his journal to express himself.
He's an introvert and often locks himself away to escape his suffering. Because of this, people judge him and call him a loner.
Weeks after the New East's takeover and the capitulation of the New West, he and many others found out about the beauty of the Brain Machine Interface. But then his depression kicks in, and he wonders about his parents' whereabouts. Luna, unaware of this, looks at his journal and thought about what the drawings mean. Laza tells her about it and they hug together.
There are times when his emotional state just spirals out of control, and when it does, his sister and their friends just reassure him that everything will be okay in the end.
This song makes brain go brrrrr

You can fit everything you know
In a bottle for you to show
Pick your brain apart and put it in (pick your brain apart)
And build it again
With needles and pins
Everything you have earned is a ship
With blue waves crashing into it
But nothing can touch your happy thoughts anymore
(nothing can touch your happy thoughts anymore)
With your glass ceiling, walls, and floor
{Pre-Chorus}
Sailing on a ship in a bottle
Anchor all your thoughts to the bottom
Pulling ropes and pulling your head back
To see what is breaking the foremast
You set sail alone there is no crew
No one on the deck who can help you
This is all your own battle to win
This is your ship and you are the captain
{Chorus}
Oh, captain, let's make a deal
Where we both say the things that we both really feel
I feel scared and I'm starting to sink
And I only sink deeper the deeper I think
Oh, captain
Oh, captain, deal
Oh, captain deal
Oh, captain deal

From when you cry
Into the sky
Ocean waters rising above your neck, mmm
You feel the glass
Start to crack

Water's leaking through holes in the bottom
Flying flags of ships that have long since
Sat at the floor of the sea, but in defense

Before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time

This is one of the most powerful songs. This song is everything to me. It feels like the one of the few songs of all time where the singer IS actually singing DIRECTLY to YOU. It conjures such a powerful imagery and emotion in my mind, like sliding on bloody knees to your dying best friend who only moments before confessed his feelings, and locking hands and making desperate, empty promises. It's like a God parting the hellish skies as you lay broken and bleeding out for repentance, and they've offered that chance, but only if you agree to relive the moments you regret most word for word, eye for eye. It's like breaking down at two in the morning, weighed down like stones piled high by all your problems and feelings, screaming like bloody murder and knowing your neighbors won't save you or even ask questions. This song is the purest concentration of regret and tragedy. Your heart is crying out for the pain to stop, but you can't look away from it all. You can't stop it. It only is.
Holy shit you somehow put it into words
fuck, this might be one of *the best comments* in this comment section- like- jvdscdgvdsgfgxxjc
This strikes me as a metaphor for trying to bottle your feelings up and deal with your problems alone. The hardest thing to do is reach out for help, especially with mental illness or insecurity, but this song really says it well. Letting people in is so hard for me; I'm trying but it's only getting harder and harder to trust people with that sort of thing.
I have an OC that's been through the same things
Strikes me as something similar. I relate.
I have a fear of rejection and I feel this song
I love the way it basically shows a fight between the urge to speak up and the urge to stay quiet, wanting to be heard and seen, yet at the same time not wanting to be judged, the Captain being our thoughts and fears, and the person singing, is us wanting to break free and actually get help, but since we don't let anyone help us, we have no crew, it's a battle between the mind and the heart in the end
I'm imagining my OC Laza going through those things 😊
This song helps me calms me when I’m overthinking or overwhelmed with my PTSD. I remind myself that my mind is the ship and I’m the captain of my body.
Since everyone's interpreting the meaning of this song, here's my thoughts on it (admittedly influenced by a game I'm playing right now).
Something terrible happens to the subject of this song (or they have depression that they can no longer hide from those around them, perhaps) so they withdraw from everyone around them and the real world, creating a happy place inside their head. They're safe there from the "blue waves" of sadness and pain, but it's not real, the way a ship in a bottle isn't a real ship, and they're really alone. And no one can hold off pain and trauma forever, so it begins to leak in despite their best efforts to not think about it, then to fight against it alone, until they're pushed to the brink as the "water" rises up to their neck.
In the end, the song offers a choice- should they stay inside their bottle, "pop in the cork" to seal themselves away for good, and drown in their own head, for fear of the outside world? Or should they escape the no-longer-happy place in their head and seek a "crew" of friends/supporters again, despite the dangers the outside world has to offer?

"and I only sink deeper, the deeper I think"
THIS
Wow
wise!
I think this song is metaphor for someone who is losing themself, they are trying to keep everything inside to not be a burden or to worry other people. They don’t want to believe it’s happening so they bury their feelings. The good things in their life is the ship that crashing around in the waves, they are losing control. They have no crew to help them gain control, they won’t talk to anyone about their problems. They try and ignore what’s going on, but things keep getting worse. Some person or event happened and they are losing their reasons to stay alive, the ship thrashing around in the waves represents that.
This happens to too many people. Someone you know can be going through this and you wouldn’t know because they won’t talk to people. And if you are going through this, it won’t fix everything, but trust me, talk to someone will in fact help. You wouldn’t be a burden to anybody. If you have no one in your life to talk to, just talk to me. You are not alone so please don’t believe you are. There is someone out there who deeply cares about you. You might now know this person but they are there, they exist. Hope you are well, and thanks for reading ❤️❤️

I love it. To me, it’s about that moment where you have to prove yourself. You’ve put yourself in a challenging situation, back to the wall, you’re alone with no crew, and no one can help you-it’s up to you, only you, to keep yourself alive. It’s do or die. I’ve been in moments like that, and once you prove to yourself you can do it, you feel like you can do anything. There is nothing more liberating than saving yourself (in my opinion)
I've always seen this song as someone who's struggling with the 'outside world' and they want to be stuck in their little bubble (bottle) where they have control, hence being the captain, where they're the happiest and are safe. Then as the the song goes on they feel like they're losing their safe place, like when the glass starts cracking, they feel alone (hence the no crew) and they feel like their losing control and spiraling and 'drowning' and desperatly trying to stay on the ship and stay happy and like the 'oh captain deal' can reference how they're trying to tell themselves it's okay and they just need to 'deal with it', and that's why this is such a comfort song to me because I can relate to that

So, I know this song clearly has a deeper meaning, but right off the bat, the first thing that comes to mind when I hear this is one of my OCs. His name is Reid, and he's a great traveler sometime in the 18th century (I haven't yet decided when exactly). He's been all over the world and sailed six of the seven seas, and when people see his ship sail into the harbor, they know an adventure is about to happen. Not all of his tales took place at sea, but many of them did, so as I listen to this song, I can imagine him braving terrible storms and battling pirates upon his ship. It's so neat!!
Also, if I _do_ acknowledge the deeper meaning, I could still apply it to Reid, for the whole reason he travels is to run away from every little bad thing back home and ignore any negativity. He wants to feel free and pretend everything is okay, when in reality, there's a lot that's not, and sooner or later, he'll have to confront it.
Anyways, this is really cool. Gonna be listening to this for awhile, lol.

The chorus sings very deliberate to me, it starts out kinda loud and sticoto and details the scene. I love it
A lot of ppl are saying what they think this song means so I'm gonna add mine:
It reminds me of times when I was really depressed and felt completely alone. The beats are like waves smashing into you everytime you try to stand back up as you slowly slip away from reality into the void of exhaustion. As the song continues the bottle starts breaking, meaning the depression is winning and when the song ends the bottle breaks completely spilling the water everywhere either freeing you from your own destruction or you losing yourself completely
This song. They say nobody's perfect, but this song stress-tests that saying. Everything about this is perfect, the way the song transitions from part to part, the instruments, and the lyrics are amazing.
Whoever said nobody's perfect was lying.
Ngl I’ve been struggling with my mental health for years. Never been to a psychologist nor talked with my family. This song realy to me feels like how I’ve been trying to deal with and fix myself to no avail and the glass keeping everything is braking, and the emotions drowning me. Trying to fix it even though I know it’s near impossible.
I’m sorry to hear that and I really hope you’re doing okay (feeling better) !! That sounds really rough, I can’t imagine what you’re going through rn, and I’m here if you ever need to talk 💜
I'm in a similar situation, I've never talked to anyone either and I'm going through an especially rough day so I put this on to cry to. So apparently this whole album (of four songs) is inspired by the story of Peter Pan. This song is definitely about some kind of inner struggle/mental illness, and uses the allegory of a sea captain as the "enemy" that is bargained with in the chorus. Even gives the touch of the red eyes in the second verse. The first song was really on the nose with Peter and Wendy, the second song used the Lost Boys' forest, and now a ship on the seas? This song's about Captain Hook.
This song never gets old omg
The violin in this is really amazing. As much as I love the vocals, it really blows me away.
“I am the captain of this ship, and I will see it to the bottom myself before I give you the power you so crave” - my coffee addled brain when this popped into my playlist
Is that a quote from somewhere, or did that just pop into your mind wholesale?

I finally found the perfect song for the Odyssey!
Not the entire musical being written about it?
There's Epic: The Musical, if you had heard of it.
why does this whole song describe me?
"you'll get lost in your brain and lose touch with all the things that made you feel sane"
"and i only sink deeper the deeper i think"
i felt those
This song has such a great beat and a wonderful message.
Listening to this I imagine a young pirate stepping up to be the new captain after the previous one died or went missing. The crew is being somewhat hunted by a strange entity who takes them out one by one, so he tries so hard to push his friends out of the situation, not wanting to lose anymore of them.
I imagine The one singing the chorus “oh captain part” is his optimistic, goofy side as a young boy talking to a more mature, serious side that he’s slowly growing into as a captain.
The way i have never heard this song before and i can just sing it and make quotes before the song even starts!!
Thank you so much for this! This is also one of my favourite songs. It's absolutely beautiful and it's a pity the author doesn't have many songs... Have you considered "Cecily Smith" by Peter Friedman?
Ofc!!! I know right, it really is a pity he doesn't; hopefully he'll make more!! Oo I've never heard of that song before, I'll take a look at it! Thanks for the recommendation!!
I made the video; it was pretty fun to make!!
Aww thank you so much!
@@zhi_maqiu Anytime!!!
That fact that this only has one dislike is fucking awesome.
Agreed!!
Guess that one person has done mitosis 285 times
About that...
and now we dont know!
@@DarkSteve Actually my extension still works and it is 416 dislikes rn.
I’ve never related to a song more in my life
This sounds like it's about a person dealing with a drinking prob "your popping the quark and your losing touch with all the things that made you feel sane" and he is promising him self to be honest and to get out of it before he might die (maybe) "oh captain let's make a deal where we both say the things that we both really feel" "oh captain make up your mind before the salt burns your eyes and you run out of time" he is taking control of his life "this is your ship and you are the captain" and I think he made it out
Why are you still reading this
I’m still reading this cause it’s a good theory, nice work dude

I'm pretty sure it's a metaphor for depression, so drinking and addiction could fit in there tbh

GAWD DANG IT WERE PUCLED, BILLY GOT INTO THE RUM AGAIN AND HES DRIVING THE BLOODY SHIP!!!
This video makes me think of an animatic where there's two versions of the same person: the 'captain' in their head, who is colored in and living in a colored world. Then there's the real person, who is black and white alongside their world. Both versions battle with their own problems- the colored version facing a wave, for example, and as the wave crashes, the animatic transitions to the real person battling with their own problems- maybe trashing their room or coping in their own way.
I relate this to school- with the “thoughts anchored to the bottom” part reminds me of how they want you to think how they want you to
my friend made a lego city adventures animatic for this and it destroyed me emotionally so i’m just gonna weep in the corner
That's so cool that ur friend made a lego city adventures animatic for this song!!
Ok who came here from the Shandzii animatic? Show of hands
Ay over here
I did!
*touches sky with hand*
This is my comment flag to remind myself to make an animatic for this song in a year or two cause I'm working on my general drawing skills before continuing my animation studies ;D
quick reminder :flushed:
Hey, hopefully you did it
You know what this needs? More animatics/animations/AMV's.
I’m making one!
@@nellie1779 Noted -Look-
I'm actually also making one though it is slow going.
I Think An Omori Animatic/Animation/AMV Of This Would Be Cool Af
@@baileypressman7650So true!
Have I played this over and over again for a full day now? Yes. Yes I have.
This feels like sailing on a ship in cold weather 🌊❄️🚢
Came from a tma animatic but now im obsessed with this song. Very lonely feels. To me its about cutting yourself off from everyone but then stuff gets really bad and you have no one to help you because you pushed them all away.
TMA?

i want to see this song as like a song that the bard wrote for the captain he's in love with.
tbh i ship them.
I'm sure some of us was brought here because someone ascended as a god of the ocean.
*Shandzii OC Animatic - Ship in a Bottle*
Nah I think it’s more like 100%tbh
You all see it as a person being simply insecure with themselves and all but actually my theory is that this song is about a person trying to deal with mental issues they caused themselves and decided to handle them all by themselves; Just the way they began their cruise with no crew they had no choice but carry on by themselves. Like they weren't social enough to gather crew and just took the storm on their bare chest no matter how much better they might even be aware the entire journey would be. They just wouldn't be comfortable with having anyone on board, it's a pride matter.
I came here from shandzii’s OC animatic with this song. So good!
Same!
