After watching that promo, thank goodness that the WWF put Undertaker with Paul Bearer to do his promo work early in his career or he might not ever gotten over. Well deserved nod to Paul Bearer for HOF 2014.
Taker eventually learned to speak for himself. At first he barely talked at all, only a few phrases here and there, very slowly and in a very low creaky voice. After Paul Bearer and him split up the first time, Taker began to talk more and more, give backstage declarations, cut promos...and he was good at it, but at first he was very green and needed some help. Paul Bearer helped him a lot develop his gothic character. Oddly enough, in the past 10 years, since he brought back the old Dead Man gimmick, he has barely spoken again...he hasn't cut all that many promos, only against Shawn Michaels and Triple H, and more recently against CM Punk, all for Wrestlemania. He has only talked a few more times in 10 years. He's made the silence a way of intimidation...he doesn't talk trash, he uses the silence, the darkness, the shadows, the slow motion and a few gestures instead.
anxofarmesto True, I think Takers best period on the mic was late 2001-mid 2002 when he was heel big evil. He consistently cut good sometimes great promos back then, "say what if you like to sleep with your own sister" was gold.
Memphis Wrestling in the 80's and 90's was just the most awesome thing. So many future WWF and WWE superstars got their start in Memphis. All of the big names came through Memphis wrestling at one point. Awesome memories.
The master of pain was never going to be world champion. Credit where it's due it was the WWF genius of creating a character that would end up being the greatest in the history of the business. Right guy in the right place for the right gimmick at the right time
@@RobwLPOC I don't know if I'd call an undead zombie deciding to become a professional wrestler "genius". The Undertaker succeeded because Mark Calloway is just so great at what he does.
@@staticcharm3808 while I agree it was the perfect character for the perfect guy, even before the character had really developed and was at its most base form the fans reacted well to it. Anybody else it would have been a one or two-year run with that character. Mark made it Legend. Mark didn't create the character of The Undertaker but he made it his own. He never could have done the same thing with the master of pain character.
His mic skills really improved a lot through his career. Really underrated talker mostly because his gimmick didn't really let him speak out much. But the biker gimmick really let him talk more and he was pretty good at it
Producer “Okay Mark, this is your debut. You’re going to do a quick promo before your match. I need you to sound mean, intimidating, and make a good first impression with the audience.” Mark “I killed two guys in a parking lot, brother” (never looks at crowd or camera) Producer “Uh, get him a manager.”
Lmao if he debuted like this in 2016 he would be rejected by the fans, buried on the spot and fired in two weeks. These days people need to have Stone Cold level promos on their debut for fans not to reject them immediately. That's why it's so much harder to make big stars these days, no one has the patience to let people grow and get better.
Yeah but this is not his WWE debut. Takers WWE debut was as impressive as any tbh. Most wrestlers still have to learn their craft though and will start out doing small shows like this for quite some time. Taker was an instant draw from the start in WWE and won the belt from Hulk Hogan 1 year after his debut. You find the wrestling debut of pretty much any wrestler who makes it big and it will look like this.
Christopher Lloyd he had great speed. His leg drop reminded me of Kanes. When he got to the WWE he slowed his pace down for his kayfabe gimmick. Kane had a faster pace and was always more athletic and larger despite being billed at a lesser weight. I feel like Undertaker was 300 even most of his career where as Kane hit 350.
@@reaperactualgaming3075 Kane himself said he was 320 pounds at his heaviest and Taker always looked "skinny" next to Kane. I always found it funny when Kane was billed at 330 at some point during Taker's Biker days and Taker was 335 when Kane dwarfed him lel.
His voice and promo delivery went from Steve Austin, to Dusty Rhodes, to Hulk Whogan right at the end. The icing on the cake was when he said he was gonna "do a job" and paused because he knew he just buried himself lol. Also I like how this 26 year old video clip looks better in quality than half the WWE stuff from 10 years ago people uploaded.
this guy as you say became a mega-star, one of the biggest wrestling legend "THE UNDETAKER". You don't recognize him, it's the appearance he had in 1989.

I couldn't refrain from laughing my ass off watching this clip. From the unenthusiastic commentary to Mark's whole promo before the match, this was more like comedy gold lol. I'm so glad he dropped this gimmick.
You can tell how much better he got physically as well from here. Early WWE Undertaker coming off the ropes and doing the flying clothesline he flew 6-7 feet off the ground. Here he kinda gets some air but it was a worse flying clothesline that 50+ year old, knackered out Undertaker had been doing for the last 5 years. Also this was only a couple of years before his WWF debut so he clearly realised "more gym, less pies" was the way to go to make it as a wrestler.
Crazy to see how much hes improved and how comfortable he is just ten years later in the wwf, riding his motorcycle up to the ring and walking around like he owns the joint
At this moment no body, absolutely no body would think this guy would become one of the greatest werstler of all time and one of the greatest caracter in all wrestling
He was really never a promo guy. He never really spoke several years in the wwf. UT had Paul Bearer who cuts the 3/4promo for him. Most of the time UT just says Rest Innnnn Pissssss. His gimmick as deadman just worked. One of the best gimmick WWF pulled off. Plus you got his in-ring ability. The Undertaker as the American Bad Ass who spoke normally wasn't that great anyway. Also, Kane was the same. One may consider them both lucky to have such gimmicks. They just acted like Jason Voorhees during promos
@@foghornleghorn2445 He was a great wrestler. He doesn't get enough credit for changing up his style, notably towards the end of his career to include more technical/mat-based moves. Even in that debut match, it's nicely kinetic and has a couple of decent spots for what was basically a squash match. He's not a lucha-style wrestler, but he doesn't have to be. There's enough flippy, all-style-no-substance wrestlers in current WWE. He got better on the mic, kept and evolved possibly the most popular gimmick ever, is well-regarded within the profession, and he had enough great matches and standout moments to justify being considered great. A far cry from Hogan.
They looked at him and said you will never make it in this business....left wcw came to the wwe and went on to become the biggest pro wresler in the entire history of professional wrestling

I like how he carried on using his Flying Clothesline into WWE. Never changed the technique of it, such a consistent and legendary wrestler. Taker4life
I watch old WCW videos and remember MMC, but when I was a kid and The Undertaker debuted, I didn't draw the connection at all (I literally had nightmares of v1.0 Undertaker as a kid)

Yeah a lot of them got their start there. Future Hall Of Famers
The announcer sure does enjoy being there, such excitement in his voice.

@@RobwLPOC The Undertaker character was pure WWE garbage no different than Papa Shango. He got it over
@@staticcharm3808 while I agree it was the perfect character for the perfect guy, even before the character had really developed and was at its most base form the fans reacted well to it.
Anybody else it would have been a one or two-year run with that character. Mark made it Legend. Mark didn't create the character of The Undertaker but he made it his own. He never could have done the same thing with the master of pain character.
You can see why he is so great. The agility and speed he posses for a guy that size is impressive.
Hardly he is TERRIBLE
"Pushing up daisies"
So, taking souls and digging holes before he was the undertaker.
Taking souls because he never had one. We all know why that is.
It started with chum punks, but once he finished mortician school, it was warriors and maniacs pushing up daisies.
That commentator sounded like he was narrating a golf game on prozac.
Prozac??
More like valium/Ativan/Xanax/Klonopin.

Ohhh how poetic... The Master of IRONY. I liked that. xD

His mic skills really improved a lot through his career. Really underrated talker mostly because his gimmick didn't really let him speak out much. But the biker gimmick really let him talk more and he was pretty good at it
he spoke a lot during the ministry of darkness era as well
The biker gimmick was perfect because that's who he actually is.
LOL his promo sucked but you gotta start somewhere! He eventually became the legend we love.
JuicyPlayer I don't think it sucked, you gotta remember that it was his first promo and he had a live crowd and it was unscripted.
And from here, Rodney Napper went on to have a great wrestling career including a 21 streak at WrestleMania.
I never thought I'd see Mark Calloway nervous cutting a promo! No wonder he became the Deadmsn... his debut promo scared him to death!
Producer “Okay Mark, this is your debut. You’re going to do a quick promo before your match. I need you to sound mean, intimidating, and make a good first impression with the audience.”
Mark “I killed two guys in a parking lot, brother” (never looks at crowd or camera)
Producer “Uh, get him a manager.”
This comment nearly killed me in a parking lot and then cut a promo about it.
Hahahahaha damn so true
lmao...two punks who tried to jump him both now pushing up daisies...oh and he got out the Atlanta pen to wrestle lets not negate that part lol.

He was wrong both times, it's actually Jerry Lawler.
Lmao if he debuted like this in 2016 he would be rejected by the fans, buried on the spot and fired in two weeks. These days people need to have Stone Cold level promos on their debut for fans not to reject them immediately. That's why it's so much harder to make big stars these days, no one has the patience to let people grow and get better.
well the fans these days are green too and all they do is say this is awsome too shit matches 😅😅
ThePieMan not only that people are to judgemental as we'll that a shame
+Shane Canning lmao
people these days are impatient, they want the belt put on someone immediately without letting a storyline develop
So he was always been cool since day 1 with that flying lariat, damn.
_"Names aren't important where I'm from."_
Living in a cave in Death Valley, I should hope not too.
He actually moved around the ring pretty well.
He sounded nervous doing his promo.

His voice and promo delivery went from Steve Austin, to Dusty Rhodes, to Hulk Whogan right at the end. The icing on the cake was when he said he was gonna "do a job" and paused because he knew he just buried himself lol. Also I like how this 26 year old video clip looks better in quality than half the WWE stuff from 10 years ago people uploaded.
lol smarks

AlexisDesterie same here
even though its old school.. that finish augh!!
Also this was only a couple of years before his WWF debut so he clearly realised "more gym, less pies" was the way to go to make it as a wrestler.
i watched the way he enters this ring a few times make me laugh everytime😂 , Gold Roasting Material
Zandohaha awesome observations
Kind of the Big Evil gimmick
Guess he'll M.O.P. the floor with anyone he wrestle according to his In Ring Name here. LOL

This Undertaker promo >>>>> Anything Reigns has said on a mic
Master of pain > Roman Reigns
Rodney Napper >>>>>>>>> Roman Reigns

C'mon man. that was clearly irony
It is somewhat true though.. The best Roman promo I heard is only above average. He's the most forced, over pushed wrestler in history hands down.

Several years later, when did he actually establish his mic skills?...
Love the Undertaker .... but in 1989 he realllllly couldn't cut a promo! Just shows what hard work can do!
Little did people know this guy would become one of the greatest wrestlers ever.
Actually he wasn't a very good wrestler. He was a good character. Like Hogan and many big names back in the day.
Glad i grownup see taker. No matter how time flies. There still goosebump!
