Despite all the upgrades and evolution, Formula 1 (1996) will always be the best PS1 F1 game to me. I'll play it forever. F1 2000 by EA is probably my 2nd favorite. I remember Formula One Arcade with the powerups, It was a fully arcade game about F1 but with things like turbos and off-road wheels to go over the opponents
I had all Psygnosis F1 Games for PS1 until the 2001 season. (then I switched to PS2) As well I had the EA Sports F1 2000 games (yes both, they brought out two😅) the origin F1 game was great, because it features all drivers of the season. F1 97 has 18 tracks btw. I know it was official 17 races, but as we could saw it in this video, it featured Estoril as well. But F1 never drove in Estoril in 1997. Originally F1 was planning to drive in Estoril as the last race but they needed to make reconstruction work. This never happened and therefore F1 canceled the GP during the season. That's why Estoril is a part of the game. What I as well really liked in this era of the 90 games (Formula One - F1 98) was the cool cheat modes, with bonus fantasy tracks etc. One of the greatest featured cheats part games was TOCA Touring Cars 2. (1 as well) But back to F1 games: Between 1997-1998 you were able to edit the whole driver names. That was funny as well. Also those games had many informations about the teams what I really liked. 1998 was btw my first F1 game for PS1. Handling was a little bit hard with controllers. Way more better with a wheel. I liked the game, even if it had planty pop up issues Really liked the intro of 1999
F1 98 is still my favourite out of the PS1 games, just because of nostalgia. It's not the best, it's not even that good, but it was the first F1 game I ever owned and that intro 😍.
13:26 The developers were actually different for '98, Visual Sciences were the guys who did the dirty! Bizarre offered them the source code but VS wanted to develop their own, so that's why it was so broken!
Yes you are correct, I definitely remember it was a different developer and F1 '98 got poor reviews and was rushed onto the shelves. I don't know why they chose to break a winning formula. I tried the demo from a magazine disc and I thought the game was poor, a real downgrade from F1 '97! Were the original developers back for F1 '99 and F1 2000? I'm wondering which game engine it used, a development of '98 or the previous games. They never could get the engine sounds very good whichever iteration they used. Gran Turismo was much better in this regard.

I have F1 98. Its a somewhat strange game, in addition to some curious things such as music, for example, it doesn't sound and you think its only from the game menu, however, at mid / end of the race the music starts playing, WTF!? , and then at the end of the race everything is silenced and you only hear the music, which is also always the same music. On the contrary, the commentators speak the first laps of the race and after lap10 approx, no comment is heard again. At least its translated (voices) in different languages. There is also the detail that you can destroy the car and go without front wheels and WIN the race hitting the walls, realistic physics xD Another curious detail is that if you play in split screen the AI becomes ultra slow and in a normal race its possible to take 5 to 30 laps of advantage (it depends on the rival). I don't like that the acceleration, speed and response is justified by the driver and car when driving the AI, while if you drive yourself all cars are equally fast. Continuing with the music, in split screen if one of the players reaches the goal the other player runs out of sound and only hears the music. (if I remember correctly).

I'm almost sure, that Viperconcept have never played any of these games. In Formula One 97, there is a huge difference when driving dry or wet track. Changing tyres too soon results in situation, when player cannot even drive a car. There is also highly visible, when a car has wore tyres. In Formula One 99, AI doesn't give a challenge. AI is CHEATING. For example, during Canadian Grand Prix I gain a pole position with 1:18.892, what is quite realistic result. During the race, after 3 laps, when I gained about 5 seconds of advantage, Hakkinen started to drive with fast laps about 1:03, and about 3-4 laps later had about 30 seconds of advantage. AI can glitch through the wall during Monaco Grand Prix. And Formula One 2000 is all the same....
