  • By some measures the birthplace of the modern railway, Darlington is a fascinating town in County Durham with a history dating back over 1,000 years. Set on the River Skerne just north of Yorkshire, the town is home to Norman, Victorian and 20th & 21st century landmarks, as well as a few hidden surprises.
    On our walk around the town centre, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Darlington Station, DL1 Leisure Park, the River Skerne, St. Cuthbert's Church, Market Place, Market Hall, Darlington Clock Tower, Mechanic's Yard, Post House Wynd, Darlington Quoits Club, the Majestic Theatre and the Joseph Pease Statue.

    My mother was from Darlington and my Grandfather finished his apprenticeship as a boilersmith at the Stephenson's locomotive works in 1911. I spent time on holiday with some relatives back in 1964 and also queued outside the cinema to see the Beatles film, Hard Days Night. Your excellent walking tour brought back great memories. Darlington is a fabulous place. Thank you

    Splendid ! Some very interesting historical anicdotes . I have only visited ' Darlo ' once and that was to change trains - about forty years ago . It was a Saturday night and I decided to go around the town for a few beers . However, there were punch-ups breaking out every five minutes or so. Consequently I decided to call it quits after three pints . As you say , the Quakers were/are influential in the area and the local football team got their nick-name from these worthy people . Seeking tranquility I headed for the Feethams as the stadium was called . Sadly , at 10 pm it was locked . I have often wondered if I had stayed in the pubs longer and had a few more beers .... I might have climbed the fence in order to tread on hallowed turf !

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 года назад +1

      A very interesting story! I'm sure you'll find a bit of rowdiness in all towns especially on a Saturday night, but Darlington is indeed a fascinating place to visit, perhaps more so on a calmer morning like this :) But still - glad you got to check out the footie stadium (or at least the outside of it!)

    I was born in Darlington and lived there for 25 years. I must have walked along Post House Wynd and up Duke street hundreds of times on my way to the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, established in the 13th century I believe, but the school no longer exists. Some parts of the town are quite picturesque but the majority of the buildings during your walk border on being ugly. It's mainly the shop fronts that let the place down, it seems the owners have no pride in their premises appearances. It has certainly changed a lot since I lived there; unfortunately for the worst. One of the best things about Darlington is the friendliness of the people. I now live in the South of England where people are not so open and a lot less friendly, especially to people with a Northern accent. My wife and I would not hesitate to retire back in Darlington if it were not for the grandchildren, who do, of course, speak with a southern accent!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 года назад +1

      Ha ha those are some wonderful memories indeed! You're right that there are some shops and buildings which are in need of a bit of care, but the character of Darlington and above all its history do make it a great town :)

      I was thinking of moving up there , but the South is where I am from; its a tough call. House prices are very much cheaper but is life any better up there??

    • @johnchampion7819
      @johnchampion7819 2 года назад +1

      It depends on how old you are; if you're relatively young, under 45 say, then it would be fairly easy to build a new set of friends. The people are more friendly and accept "foreigners" easier than they do down South. I suppose, life is what you make it, but perhaps you could make a better life with a few extra pounds in your pocket! Another factor depends on what family ties you would have to break by moving a couple of hundred miles away. I wouldn't suggest venturing too far North - some Scottish people do not welcome the English - in my experience.

    I really appreciate your comment about the restoration of the river bank...hopefully that noisy, polluting inner ring road will also be greened over, transformed into a boulevard, limiting traffic to one lane each direction and thus reconnecting the centre with the rest of darlington. Many Uk towns and cities could easily turn around their awful ring roads into tree lined, civilised boulevards, couldn´t they?

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 года назад +3

      It's really heartening to see lots of cities around the country starting to open up their road networks into shared spaces with pedestrians - I was recently in Southend-on-Sea where they've turned a previously ugly ring road into a gorgeous seafront promenade! You'll get to see a walk around Southend soon, but you're absolutely right - this kind of restoration makes all the difference to making a town a joy to walk around :)
