After roasting Brian for his question, Nate "let me make it better" - "if it's a 20hr flight, give me 10 and then give me 8, that's how I'd do it." And no one mentioned that Nate would still be 2hrs from the destination...

    • @nathanielwiens
      @nathanielwiens Год назад +14

I feel like he deserves to be wherever he ended up lol I thought the question was quite reasonable and it was interesting that they had to hem and haw around it for so long and roast Blueberry when the answer, as we found out later was simply 10hrs. I thought we were about to have another Cow-gate on our hands.

Hey Bear and whatnot! I am a palliative care chaplain at a hospital in Denver. Each day we start interdisciplinary rounds with a short reflection, usually an inspirational quote or something. Today I instructed our entire team to come up with the five liquids they would dispense from their fingers. Each member of the team (doctors, social workers, chaplains) spent the whole day discussing, looking up various liquids (some NSFW), and crafting their perfect starting five. You have brought joy and levity to a sometimes difficult place to work. Thanks for being a source of fun and a reminder that we don't always have to take ourselves so seriously!

When Nate says something crazy like, "if you got $10 million you couldn't retire." I just have to shake my head. Even if I got taxed at 40% and had $6 million left, I could retire. I will only have a high tax liability the first year. If I place that money in various high interest accounts I can live off of the interest alone going forward, for the most part. (for example, 4% on that amount is $240,000. I make 1/5th of that right now. I think I'd be just fine.)

When I returned the next day, I asked someone where the parking garage was and they pointed me to a tram. Ten minutes into my tram ride I thought “I did not take a tram to get here”. Needless to say I wandered around a satellite lot for an hour before finally asking a cop to help me. Nate making fun of college is ironic after the altruism debate. Nate did exactly what college professors try to teach students to do in class: he challenged the professor’s argument by providing examples; he listened as the guys explained that the example good deeds he provided weren’t truly altruistic because they make you feel good; he realized that based on the professor’s definition of altruism, it probably is impossible; and then he concluded by providing his own argument that the definition of altruism is unfair/unhelpful because it is part of human nature to feel good when helping others. Nate would make a great liberal arts college student!

I became an instant fan of Nate’s comedy in 2019 after seeing The Tennessee Kid, and have been a weekly listener of the podcast from the get-go. It wasn’t until the last handful of episodes that I noticed a particular ism that comes up occasionally, and thought I’d check in for some answers. I hear Nate consistently say “we’re” instead of “we’ll”. Example: “we’re talk about that next time,” or “we’re be in Nashville next weekend,” etc. Are we supposed to add in the word “going” on our own as a part of the “we’re” contraction? As someone from the Northwest, I wasn’t sure if it might a Southern thing, although I’ve only heard Nate say it. This is my first comment/question, and figured this would be an opportune time to mention y’all are great and hope to see you come through Portland-Nate please come back, you were unbelievable.

Nate, Dusty, Aaron and Black Bean Breakfast Burrito -
My husband and I have been huge fans since we stumbled across Nate’s special, Tennessee Kid, in 2019 one night while browsing Netflix. We didn’t know what we were in for, but we laughed so hard we cried, and we have been hooked ever since. Now we have a fun hobby following stand-up comedy in general. It’s a nice escape from our daily lives as full-time working parents of four.
The reason I felt the need to comment this week is because I am the corporate dietitian at Panera Bread. I manage the nutrition, ingredient, allergen and food policy information that you see on our menus. Aaron - thank you for being a Panera fan! I have heard you mention Panera a few times. Nate - I hope you give us another try. Though Aaron prefers our drive-thru locations, there is still the option to walk into a bakery-cafe and order, plus there are calorie counts on all the menu items which I know is something you pay attention to. So many options to choose from - from bakery treats to specialty coffees & drinks to salads to sandwiches to soups to warm bowls to flatbread pizzas! You can’t go wrong.
Thanks for the continued laughs, gentleman! See you in St. Louis in October, Nate!

The vast majority of folks from Arkansas pronounce the "S" in Illinois. Of all people, they should know better. LOL
Are there other states with a silent "S" that pronounce it in other states names?

We have a full length discussion about altruism without once mentioning that Jesus did this very thing when He CHOSE to die on the cross for us and then encouraged us to do the same by giving our own lives for the good of others... so therefore I DO BELIEVE that it IS possible IF and ONLY IF one has been blessed with the Holy Spirit and is born again under the authority of the King of altruism Himself. God bless you guys. Love this podcast for its positive atmosphere and thank you to Dusty for being open about his faith and sobriety..Huge fan! (of Dusty Slay LOL) J/K thanks you guys.

I grew up thinking there was a Springfield in every state, but when you pulled up that map I was shocked to see it wasn't true. More than that, I was confused to see 67 Springfields in less than 50 states. Upon further investigation, it turns out that *according to this* Michigan and Indiana have 2 Springfields, while New Jersey has 3, Virginia has 4, and Wisconsin takes the crown with 5. Every week I become more and more thankful for this educational podcast.

Hey Bear! In reference to the altruism discussion, I think the more productive focus would be on the actual motives themselves instead of whether you can do it without an agenda or motive. It might also be less infuriating to Nate. Anyway, as a Christian, we see that it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6) & that everything we do should be for the glory of God (I Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:23, Isaiah 43:7). So our "good deeds" should be first & foremost for God's glory, & then we can have secondary & tertiary reasons. If the main reason is anything else such as feeling good about it or people respecting you for it would be or you get rewarded... literally anything besides God's glory being the priority would be sin. The other stuff is "icing on the cake" if we're doing good deeds for the right.
As a side note, but important point to clarify, we are not saved BY our good deeds, but UNTO good deeds (Isaiah 64:6, Ephesians 2:8-9).

57:33 you catch the snail, without touching it. put it in a mason jar with a lid. This way, you know its whereabouts at all times. Plus, you have the satisfaction of living your best 10 million dollar life in front of the creature that wants to kill you, but can't. You put food and water in the jar on occasion because you are altruistic. The snail soon becomes dependent on you, and you begin to feel a sense of stewardship over the critter. Eventually you name it. And you and the snail become friends. You begin taking Shellby along with you on trips and parties (in his jar, of course). With your money, you buy him a larger, beautiful custom made jar to live in at home and one for all your travels. You both live happily ever after.
    The End.

So an altruistic act is not truly altruism IF the person has a nice feeling from helping someone? So, you should have absolutely NO FEELING? Like a ROBOT?
IF that's the premise, then the opposite could be true? If I hit a total stranger in the face, I should walk away feeling no remorse??

Hey Folks. Hello bear. Went back and was listening to the “Aliens” episode and heard the topic of the Cowboy Church that Beefcake worked in Montgomery. I live in Conroe, which is north of Houston, and there a lot of Cowboy churches. The basis behind it is it’s a judgment free place where you don’t have to dress up (or cowboy wear). Anyone is welcome, but most of them look and feel like you’re at a ranch. Love the show. Coming to the show in Ft Worth later this year.

I donated a kidney in February to a random stranger - still haven't met them but hope their life has been saved and is better. Maybe that will convince (kidney) Beans Bates to rethink his opinion on altruism. Although, it does make me feel good to know someone might be living their best life... but it was a long recovery and that part didn't feel good. Does that count for anything?
Name idea for Baby Slay... have been shocked no one has thought of this: Rusty. Rusty Slay. And if its a girl - flip the y to an ie and have a Rustie.
I've introduced the podcast to a coworker of mine and we have tickets to see Nate when he comes to NYC to Radio City - we will be the ones yelling "HEY BEAR". We are working on a wildly intense project and didn't know where to start with some of the analysis. I had a lightbulb go off while listening to one of the animal fights episodes and I thought "WE CAN DO A TOURNAMENT to help us narrow down the decisions." It was a huge hit and I have been praised as being brilliant with the idea. I only told a few people where I got the idea so I don't lose my status as being brilliant.
Keep up the great work guys. I wake up every Wednesday excited for a new episode - you all make my life a lot brighter and when you end the podcast with "we love y'all" I truly believe its genuine.

I am an Orthopedic Surgery PA. Argument for altruism being possible would be certain times in the medical field. Example, a gangbanger needs emergency surgery, they essentially get the same treatment as everyone else. The job is to provide good no matter the circumstances. You might could argue well you do it for the money. 1. Some people are on salary and get paid whether this patient shows up or not. 2. You think gangbangers walk around with insurance? 3. Ask a nurse about their worst patient and if they would have paid money to not have them as a patient.
On a much smaller scale a patient will brag on the surgeon how good their scar looks when I was the one that closed the incision site, so I did that for nothing haha.
Fortunately, I live in a great small town in Alabama so we don’t have to worry about this often! Thanks for the entertainment guys!

In the kid example, you’re getting outside praise for that act. Whether you sought that or not. How many kids would you help find if you got screamed at or locked up when you did it. You would never do it again. But if you did afterwards then that would be altruistic. It’s all theory anyways, that’s half the fun of college is discussing things that would never actually work in the real world anyways.

The fact that Nate who (like me) sometimes has a hard time pronouncing some words, nailed "worcestershire" is one of the funniest things. When I heard it brought up I was all excited to hear him say it. Thinking, like me he was going to destroy the pronunciation. But not only did he say it correctly, he said all three different versions.

Altruism is just mankinds carnal definition of charity and nate doesn't understand that and which is why he argued the argument when there really is no argument if you really beleive God.
