I need to reread this book now. The writing didn't really strike me as that weird but at the same time besides the major plot beats I can't remember the writing itself hence why I feel a reread is in order.
Basketball is hugely important to Indigenous Americans and has been for years. There are reservation leagues and their own style of play called Rezball. It’s not surprising that basketball was a critical element of a story set primarily on a reservation and the “ticket out” for one of the kids, Denora. The 1:1 game actually made me quite nervous because I was afraid the Elk head woman would cause some horrendous physical injury to Denora, like an ACL tear or broken ankle, possibly ruining her sports career (future). And that 1:1 face-off set in motion the anger for the final transition from human, along with bringing out the fighter/survivor in Denora.
The writing in this book was SOOOOO HARD to follow. It took away from the book because I had to keep rereading shit. By the end I didn’t care about the story anymore because the writing really did not jive for me.
ohh, i have coincidentally have the terror on my list as the first book i read in 2022! i look forward to your review - i might save it for after i've finished it though! i was a little on the fence about the only good indians, but i think you've swayed me to keep my eyes peeled for it!

Thank you for this. It makes a lot of sense now that I know about the cultural significance to it.
love this setup! Also hope this isn’t inappropriate but you’re looking particularly handsome in this video hahah
Agreed! We can almost say inappropriately handsome, even 🙃
Thanks Patrick. You're pretty handsome yourself.
I'm glad I participated in my first book club. Stephen Graham Jones in my new favorite author and I'm binging his other works currently. Cheers!
I thought the elk stomped the dog?.
Yeah, that could be too. I wasn't really sure.

I hear you. There were a few times where i had to reread something i didn't understand, but after a while his style grew on me.
I’m currently reading it and I absolutely agree with you but I’m still enjoying it
Totally look like Jimmy Fallon here
Hahaha people tell me that all the time. No joke, you are the third person this month.
You're leaving your clock like that specifically to drive people like me crazy, aren't you. Evil!
Haha yeah. I will probably set it at some point.
