The Brazilian guy said "I don't like football that much. I'm a DJ, I prefer music" and the subtitle is "of course I love football".
Lol
Yes, I wondered why he said "music" when the translation didn't say anything about music. I think he did say he was a DJ.
@@renato5384 It is mixed with Spanish, I guess. Instead of "olhar" or "Assistir" he uses the verb "mirar" as watch... That's Spanish

@@theopinionchannelforyou7739 Yeah, sort of ! He said "“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
This was evidenced by the fact that he taught himself Afrikaans while imprisoned on Robben Island, and was the able to negotiate with
F. W. de Klerk in his language (even though this was abhorrent to many, Afrikaans being so strongly associated with Apartheid.)

Wrong video
She doesnt understand what the man said because she cant speak tagalog and she only understand it a little bit. So stop being an idiot
He’s kind of profiling her
She's from Indonesia not Philippines.
I met so many of Filipino in Indonesia and 98% of them speak English all the time in their own filipino community.
I think they don't have a real national language like bahasa Indonesia. That's why a filipinos girl in this video cant speak tagalog.
And im sitting here knowing only 2 languages
at least you know two. the vast majority of the English-as-the-first-language speakers know only it.

Well, in my opinion it’s good to even say a few sentences than nothing at all, to learn any language, you gotta practice and practice.
So to me it really doesn’t matter if he speaks fluently or that his accent is different.
Just for his effort to learn other languages is already a huge accomplishment, and that is already great!

Funny, when a European speaks Mandarin the Chinese lose their minds, when it's the other way around we don't even blink.
Same as any other asian who doesn't speak Chinese but managed to learn Chinese, and yet it's nothing special for them.. Unless you fake the whole "I love China"
Well, maybe bacause English is a global language? 😒
It has to do with familiar language families. Chinese is so different than a European language.
Fun fact, china is a closed country. When a foreign go there, people pay them to stay in front of the restaurant, just to make natives go there. This is why they get so chocked when a foreign speaks their language. You basically only see asians speaking mandarin there

I love this video so much. It's so sweet when people let their guard down, smile and laugh when you speak their mother tongue!
The brazilian guy says: "Foi ano passado" in english "It was last year".
Subtiltle is: " I went to the embassy". Lol in portuguese that will be "Eu fui a embaixada".
Oh it warms my heart how these people were "no we don't wanna do an interview" but when he speaks in their own language they are smiling and so friendly towards the interviewer. That is amazing!!
There was a flaw in the translation from the brazilian dudes tho - he didn't say "yeah, I love football!", he said that football isn't really his thing since he's a DJ, so he prefers music 😂😂😂😂
I'm really amazed tho, you're very talented!! As a multilingual myself, I really appreciate the effort and hard work!! 🤙🏼
Matrixyst what joke?? I just watched it again and in my opinion, if it's not a translation flaw then it's plain profiling and generalizing a whole population into one stereotype.
I prefer to think it was a flaw in the translation.
@@jubiloks_ and that is, in fact, the joke.
Major Fallacy I don't necessarily like thinking of generalization of stereotypes as a joke. I know that it's not that huge of a deal if someone does or does not like football, but it can be misleading.
Anyways, if you find it funny and see it as a joke then good for you, it's nice to laugh. I just prefer not to see people purposely putting all brazilians in the "we're all crazy about football" box, but that's just my opinion 🤷🏻
Edit: spelling
Major Fallacy the guy also said he went to Amsterdam last year, and in the translation it was embassy ? Was that a joke or is he lost in the translation? Also his Portuguese is pretty bad, he has a short vocabulary, bad intonation ( sounds Spanish ) and he also used the verb mirar ( that’s spanish) instead of ver/assistir.

Muito bom seus vídeos! Geralmente não usamos “mirar” em português. Mirar é usado para o espanhol no sentido de “ver”. Quando você está “vendo futebol” você está “assistindo”, acho que este é o verbo mais correto.

With all due respect his Chinese is pretty poor.
Like 去过 and 中国 sound the same coming from him.
But hey 18 languages, cool overall
This (along with other comments) answers my question. I suspected he only had basic knowledge of each language. He seems to have a knack for pronunciation, and that makes it look like he speaks fluently.
This reminds me of the time I was with some friends, one of them half-Japanese. At some point I said one very simple sentence in Japanese ("kore wa nan desu ka" == "what's this?"), and he went completely bananas, eyes wide open, shouting "you speak Japanese and you've never told me!!", only because I got the accent right and I sounded convincing. BTW, I still can't understand basic directions in Japanese.
@@requemao He takes the Walmart approach to language learning, lots of languages but he didn't spend much money on each.
bbcmotd Exactly what I thought.
It is cool that he has Basic knowledge in so many languages but at least his Chinese was Really with a terrible accent 😐
I Think he should focus a little more on quality then quantity 加油
The歐Boss This is a premise in all these videos from people saying they speak 10-20 languages, leading people to assume they are fluent. It's sophistic, you can't be fluent in 10-20 languages, fluency requires practice and deep knowledge in some areas, in general it requires at least a B2.

Love your channel bro! I only speak 5 languages but language is one of my passions and I was your interactions all the time. God bless
I mean, he has an impressive amount of languages under his belt, but as a Chinese speaker, I have difficulty understanding his Chinese as he is butchering it and repeating dumb phrases like "I love you" "let's go drink beer." Albeit, Chinese is pretty difficult.
That's the thing when you're trying to learn Chinese and actually communicating to Chinese people, they tend to always praise you and, I have nothing against praising someone or motivating them to keep learning, but with that also comes the lack to improve one's self, hence being cocky about it
@@rob_patrick1 The secret is if they praise you they are trying to end the conversation and get away. If they talk with you, then your mandarin is good enough to be understood.
Ryan Martin very true! I’d rather talk with him in english about more real issues, instead of listening to his shattered Chinese full of simple greetings. That’s why we always praise foreigners trying to chat with us on subway or tourist spots in shattered Chinese. we compliment, we say goodbye quickly and feel relieved.
Yesssss! Omg I heard that too, ahah!

This man is soooo amazing! I want to be just like him when I grow up! And if you're reading this Wouter, I want you to know that you are an inspiration! Love from Washington State, US
Yo you are incredible! You deserve at least 1 mil subs!
So he can basically say some variant of "You are from ____? I speak ____. Can you understand it? I would love to go to _____, maybe we can have a beer there" in about 20 languages.
To be fair, his language skills varies language to language - he's clearly very confident in Tagalog and Portuguese which are featured here, but his Mandarin and Cantonese skills are limited. And I struggled to understand his Mandarin as his tones are waaaay off (Chinese languages are tonal, which is often a challenge for white people who are not used to this aspect of the language) and he needs a wider range of vocabulary - like he uses 'hao li hai' for everything which is like, oh come on, there's more than one way to express the concept of "that's great/good" or "alright" and hao li hai can mean like 'that's awesome' or even 'you're awesome' but he uses it to describe himself sometimes and I would find that inappropriate if a native speaker did that (self-praise is a no-no) but I can forgive him as a foreign speaker who is not using the most appropriate term. However, as a fellow polyglot, yeah, it's impossible to be fluent in every language you speak - you'll be fluent in some of them and get by in others, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be afraid to use those foreign languages that you're not fluent in. However, for the purpose of RUclips, perhaps it was a mistake to try to do stuff in Mandarin which is struggles in (and he admits that in the video) - the Tagalog and Portuguese were impressive though. Mandarin is a bloody difficult language to master as a European and he's trying his best.
How many languages can you? I think he's got better than that in quite a few and still beginning to learn others. One of the big issues with language acquisition is people feel insecure about speaking it until they get "good enough," and they can't get "good enough" without actual conversational practice. He'll get much better much faster by going out and speaking to people, even if he has to initially keep conversations very simple and makes many mistakes.
English is my first language, but I speak a little German and Spanish, and I'm currently learning Cherokee. Outside of Spanish, there's literally no one I can speak with in person where I live, but I make a point to try to use German and Cherokee in online conversations regularly. I'm sure in a few years I will look back on stuff I've said now and find tons of errors, especially with the Cherokee polysynthesis, but all that will mean is I'm improving, and the year after that it will be the same.
@@gymnastalexliang I agree completely, I'm learning Mandarin at the moment (Not that far in yet) but the grammar appears to be really simple yet the tonal side of things is very tough. If you want to see another channel check out this guy, he speaks Mandarin and Cantonese very very well (Check him out here ruclips.net/video/63hB5ZthbP0/видео.html) - He's one of the reasons I started learning Mandarin, I love the reactions he gets when people realise that he speaks it fluently. Super super impressive.
@@BennyDACHO That's the problem with being an polyglot. Too many languages. It would take a lifetime to master each and every language unless you're incredibly skilled at it (like incredibly incredibly, miles beyond what even the 1% are good at) - My question is; is it better to master a few languages and have better conversation with those you do talk to, or is it better to know a lot about a lot of languages and connect with a lot more people but be less proficient in speaking? (Not a rhetorical question at all, I think either answer is good)
@@BennyDACHO The definition of a polyglot is "knowing or using several languages" - It doesn't imply that they are proficient in their use. I personally would rather know a few fluently than a load with imperfection, but it's subjective, everyone has a different preference.
This is great! Make more of this!
