Coming from somebody who just paused painting a portrait of pedro pascal with oil paints to watch this video, the main reason your painting looks so different and the colours didn't blend properly is that the base layer of liquid white wasn't even. That meant that you had to use a thick layer of blue for the sky and water, resulting in the clouds being blue etc etc. Also, you don't dilute or wash off oil paint with water, that's what the paint thinner is for :D
@@moosymelly ethan was using the bob ross brand paints, they're all oil paints. Haven't tested the brand myself so idk, maybe their texture is different
I think ethan did a lot better than he thinks :D His only problem seems to be that he can only apply he brush FULL FORCE against the canvas haha, there's some parts where you need to be a little more delicate or just use the tip! But art isn't about doing everything "perfect", it's about expressing yourself and letting out your inner creativity.

This is like if Bob Ross had a twin brother who was a drunk and broken down bc he was never good enough to be on TV and I really hope he comes back for episode 2
As someone who did “Bob Ross Fridays” every Friday for 2 years in high school, I can relate to the anguish. I have a BFA now and this shit is STILL hard
My reaction seeing the thumbnail: “Oh my God, this will be a beautiful disaster”. My reaction watching the video: “Some way, somehow, this is even worse than I thought.” My reaction looking at the final result: “It’s actually not THAT bad!”
Honestly! I feel it was the liquid white that messed him up (also not having thinner lol,) if he had applied enough he would def be having an easier time. I think it'd be cool if he read the feedback and did another video trying to follow another one.
As an art teacher I have to say you are doing a great job for first starting out! Try using a more even layer of the liquid white next time :) This is also exactly what it's like in my classroom LMAOOO
Every time I see a RUclipsr follow a bob ross video, they are never happy with the result. But I think it’s important to remember that they made something! They made a whole painting! And bob ross would be so proud of them! Most of these people don’t ever paint but they stuck with it and they did their best and that’s what matters! Good job Ethan 😊
This really goes to show that the same materials and directions can yield so many different outcomes, especially when attempted by someone with years upon years of experience and someone who is casually picking up a brush without a background in art. Loving the art videos Ethan! Some of this is relatable and then other times I'm internally screaming as my Art Brain cries in despair 😅
Honestly, you really haven't done badly tho. The only real constructive criticism I could make is 1. Use some more liquid white at the start so that your canvas is wet before you start laying down colour. 2. You need a little less paint on your brush and be a little less heavy-handed with your brushes, putting the colour down.. remember you can easily add more, but you'll struggle taking it away 😊 hope this helps ❤
Why does literally everyone I see that does this challenge always skip the liquid white and them immediately complain about their color being too dark and not blending?
Oh Ethan. PLEASe please make this a recurring thing. This and your ASMR are two forms of entertainment that makes me laugh more than anything else. Consistently. Endless funnies that I will always tune into and return to. PLESe don't stop.

Hey Ethan, art student here. The trick to gain those textures he has in his videos is something called dry brushing. Don’t use water or globs of paint dab the brush in then brush it along the pallet a couple times to get rid of the wet globby bits for some parts and take the texture of the paintbrush and use it to create the desired textures! 👍
