+dave akbaran yeah it was an awful shoe in general. Let alone a Jordan Brand retro. I tried wearing my pair for a long time to break them in, and just gave up on them. The leather is more cardboard than leather, and the shoes resemblance to the original model and other retros was insulting to me as a collector.

The 1999 still has synthetic material all around the shoe. It has a fabric underneath the synthetic leather.

+Derrick Correction. I did say durabuck but in retrospect now I believe they were made with synthetic leathers (which lead me to say durabuck). I've spoken to some collectors that own the OG and those pairs are cracking heavily. The pair that had duraback however and can confirm was the Black Cement 3.

I had the 1989 pair when I was 11 years old. to this day people Dont believe me that they were made of that durabuck material.
I wore 8.5 when I was 11, it was an adult size. Still made of the durabuck material, the white cement, black/playoff, and the white black and red. The military blues were predominantly the traditional leather.

jckix thanks it's nice to know that I'm not the only person who knows this stuff. That's what kills me about Jordan brand, I mean I was a HUGE JORDAN FAN and knew about everything there was to about him and especially the real Nike Air Jordans. What I don't understand is that he was obsessed with being as close to perfect as possible as far as his game and he has more $ than he knows what to do with. With that being said I don't understand why Jordan brand doesn't make these retros with high quality and EXACTLY like they were when they were originally made in Taiwan. I mean I'm just a 39 year old guy, who granted did know more than most average Jordan fans but I never worked for Nike and if I could produce an exact version of the originals if I had the $ and connections/resources then idk what stops them from doing so. Well actually I do and it all boils down to profit. Cheaper made shoes with cheaper materials = higher profits but it's like come on Mike do u really need that Lil bit of extra $? It makes me disappointed in him in a way. I mean I somehow managed to always have ever pair when they were released all throughout school without a job. I would save months ahead of time waiting on the next release. I still to this day remember the exact amount I needed to have. They were $124.99 and after tax it came to $131.24, I highly doubt M.J. himself ever reads this but if so.... come on Mike give us what us dedicated fans deserve. QUALITY AS THE ORIGINALS!!!
Just got these (2016) so happy. They are very comfortable too. Surprising. I think they're super clean. I didn't see mine having blue tint to the lining tough.
Been waiting for someone to drop this. I had the '99 back back in the days, so when my '16 came in, I noticed right away the backtab shape looked different.. The Skinny backtab on the 16's was a bummer, I was expecting the fat Nike Air like the 99's..Jordan Brand can never get it perfect smh

true, but sneakers in comparison to other items like apparel have inflated significantly. its not like petrol were everyone expected prices to sky rocket but it isnt as expensive as it was projected to be. i work at a sneaker store and core products like basic cons and nike roshes have increased by $20 but the quality hasnt improved or anything

Your right about the hang tag for the white cement OG RETRO '89 release I agree 100%....The 2016 white cements heel tab could've been a bit wider like the the '99 pair. However the splatters are hands down way better!

Great Review! makes me feel better about the speckling on my 2016. I had the 99' thought they were closer to the OG as far as speckling goes. Happy to hear that these are closer to the OG in that regard. Nice job!
+J Bellamy Actually I saw some other pics shared on Instagram and from some collectors and it really depends on the factory. Some 99s had major speckling and others like mine didn't but the 2016 apparently is supposed to be closer to the OG.
I think the 2016 version has subtle similarities between all previous releases 2012, 1999, and 1989. Hopefully We can see all versions in one video comparison. Great vid!

Both shoes are great but I do the like the 1999 white cement than 2016.
I found out that 2016 pair is more comfortable than my 2012 pair I guess thats what they do on the "remastered model" they make the shoe inside soft and nice.
Yeah way better than 2012.
One thing people don't know about the 2012 white cements is that the so called leather is actually durabuck which was used on the ogs

99s were very dope. Dopest. If we could get a retro pair that were combined with the 89 vintage and the 99 retro then we would have a nice shoe. Let's see what 2019 brings us.

the specling on your heel tab is insane mine was more consistent with the rest of the shoe and was much smaller. I got a good pattern on the right but the left side had dots that were too big, all luck i guess

If you look at the ones in "Do the Right Thing", you see that the netting on the toe ends where the laces end. There is perforated leather from there to the end of the cut of leather.

itas hilarious how people think the leather quality changed much, when if you look at the thickness of the cut, they are just about as thin as one another, they just started to use a thicker coat of plastic on top

+MJO23DAN 99's because of the toecap, shape, dried speckled on Nike Air letter s ALL DAY which I got 2 pair's DS and 1 to rock which I soleswapped myself. 2016 bulky looking toecap is nasty for most but mines was not that bad! Nice review to educate the rookies and enthusiasts!

The only thing that really stands out or doesn't look right on the upcoming Black Cement 4 release (2019) is the positioning of the "Nike Air" badge on the heels. The font looks good but the position of the logo favors the left side of the heel cap. Not sure if JB did this intentionally to distinguish the 2019 release from previous years or what?? Does anyone know?

Same here except I lost like 12 pair of them. They were all OGs ranging from OG 1's to OG 6's. They simply were gone one day. I have no idea where they are.
1999 is Durabuck. The 2016 is genuine leather.

Great vid comparison. I just wish Jordan Brand could Crack the vault giving us exact specs of the O.G.'s. For 220+ they are sticking it to us fans. I like what I see in the 2016. But give us the whole enchalada.

My 2016 pair came with a Nike Air plastic tag. Wonder why your's came with the Jumpman. Maybe there was only one pair sold with NA and I won something!

One thing I never understood about this video is why you said the 99 leather was better. I have a DS 99 pair and I’m certain it’s synthetic leather. The 2016 is definitely genuine and much softer
Older video. I learned later down the line of synthetic when I had a homie work on a pair of beat 99s. My pair isn’t cracking like that so I didn’t observe it that directly. Is this something you caught/learned of recently? This vid is a couple years old to be commenting haha
MJO23DAN I know the video is 2 years old, I saw it in late 2016 and just didn’t really question the leather thing. Once I get a 99 pair I was like “hol up” so that’s the only reason I came back to comment 😂
jckix yeah. I work with DS sneakers so I’m not gonna see a lot of the beat sneakers we come across in down the years. I will say though the 2016 was made well. Jordan Brand has been making sneakers soft and wearing out the box and even stuff past 2016 is getting better. I’ve bought a lot of recent retro this year.

Why does the plastic shoe tag have a jumpman logo on a Nike Air Jordan Retro shoe. The original '89 cement 4's came with a Nike Air plastic shoe tag with Nike Air on the back of the shoes smh.

+Daniel Trimble black socks will do it haha. Especially cheap ones. Some of those have some strong dyes on them so it's going to ruin the shoe. You may try using some detergent on a brush and scrub like hell. Dyes are pretty hard to get off shoes once it has penetrated the material. I don't have a direct answer for you there. I'll have to look into it. Wear white socks with white lined shoes.

+Daniel Trimble Any really. I use Tide and you can probably mix in some Oxy Clean diluted with water. Test an area to see if it does the trick. Maybe even add a little bleach but don't over do it.

+Glenn Rivera I don't have a clue. My guess is the type of last they build the shoe upon. Eliminating materials where it wasn't necessary. They shaved the back tab to a skinnier back tab. Production costs. That's my guess.
The decal on the 99 is closer to the OGs from '89. Not a big fan of jumpman decal on the 2016

Wish I had a secret for you but I don't. I actually don't handle the older stuff much. The cracking actually got worse leading up to the release because I was prepping for my video. But typically I keep my stuff in a cool climate controlled room out of light and in a dark closet.
Is there a special cleaner you use? I hear Magic Eraser works well. Too afraid to try for fear it may mess with the finish.
As you saw I used Air Legends cleaner. It does the job. You can use any of the other brand types like Crep Protect, ReShoevn8r, Jason Markk. Magic eraser is cool and will get scuffs out. Just depends on the work you need done.
Wow, the back tab your 2016 pair has ton more speckling than mine. While mine does have more speckling than the 99 pair, it isn't a much as yours. I got two pairs from Nike and neither of them are as speckled as yours. Have you compared to other 2016 pairs? Or are we seeing a lot of production variance here?

+KABLAM for me these shoes and any other originals that had NA is a big deal for me. From a design aspect and nostalgia, I always dreamt of having NA pairs over the Jumpman. If they originals had a Jumpman, I'd want them that way!

looking at the speckles on your 2016's i think the ones i got off ebay might be fakes fml....$255 down the drain i cant believe this...someone please advise do some real ones have less speckles on the back??? or should they all have the same amount as @mjo23DANS??
Are they supposed to be that speckled on the 2016 because in the pictures they don't looked that speckled.

+Teh1337geek For me it's not just the logo. It's the shape and color for starters. The color was just too dark. The leather they used was purely synthetic and the direction of the netting was not true among other reasons.

+Mauricio Winston yeah retros will never be as close to OGs. The way they construct things, materials, methods, etc will never be the same but color blocking, font sizes, the direction of a Jumpman should be easy fixes for the Brand to correct.

My pair was made in China. It could be Taiwan has more speckling but then again it's a different factory as well.

why skip the 2012 pair because of the jumpman. After you get your own company separate from Nike who wouldn't put their own logo on it
+carl freeman It's not solely the jumpman. Theres SO many other things wrong with that version which is why I passed on it in 2012. Leather, color of midsole, splatter, direction of netting, shape, etc. It just wasn't true to what we knew at the time which was the 99 so I hold that one on a pedestal. The 2016 version is great too.

They're DS. Cracking happens with older models eventually because of the type of midsole which is polyurethane.

Tough to tell. Really depends on a multitude of elements - heat, moisture, storage, etc. If you wear your sneakers you can get the most life out of them. Typically 10 years you can go the distance if you store your shoes properly you can go for longer. I have 2000 Jordan 5s that haven't cracked yet.

+Fredo Avelar Yes. The OG had a synthetic leather upper. Durabuck doesn't necessarily mean the same as nubuck or suede (although that's what most people associate with).
