Loved hearing the design influences of this sneaker and your thorough breakdown of the retro and OG. I've had friendships over the years with a few great people of Japanese ancestry and from what I gathered from knowing and talking with them regarding the history of imperial Japan (symbolized by the rising sun flag we all know from WWII) is that most modern Japanese (and the diaspora post WWII) look upon their imperial history with much heartache and empathy for all the horrible things that were done in the emperor's name. I mean he was willing to have every man woman and child die to defend the homeland from the allies. The things done in Korea and china and Indonesia, just utterly monstrous. So putting your foot on that symbol of oppression might be empowering, depending on your worldview of course. Just thought I'd share that tidbit with you all. Love and respect to all my sneakerheadz.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for bringing this up. This is actually the real reason why that insole was taken out. Not because it was disrespectful to walk on the flag. But because the monstrosities that took place and what it represents to the people it’s ideology effected. Crazy situation where the shoe is basically cancelled in some of the countries you mentioned. Thought it was interesting that @mjo23dan didn’t bring that up. I’d like to know his honest opinion/thoughts on the shoe after reading this
@Ygh123. It’s never easy speaking about our world history because of such turmoil involved so I try to take sensitivity or remove politics altogether from discussion on the channel. I did not know the depth of that portion of history. We are all a student of the game here. It’s unfortunate for the parties involved and prayers to those that lost their lives during that horrendous time.
GR shoes would be $250 which is exactly where we headed anyways might as well give us the plush underpadding beneath the leather and the metal lace holders 😂.
Brother the only reason I can think why the top eyelets are plastic vs. medal is because the metal ones eventually would chew through the laces when tightening your shoe. I played ball for an entire season in the OG back in 97 and it frayed multiple laces. Plastic is more forgiving. Let me know if you find others with the same experience.
Someone also commented that the mold to create the metal eyelets would be expensive to produce. Probably not something they kept since the OG as a lot of the molds then were used during the original run and then destroyed. I do remember the laces getting frayed during wear but I never tied them up all that way either.
I was a freshman in high school back in 09. I had space jams & rising suns. Very years later i got 2013 taxis & i still rock the hell out of em. Cherrys are nice but im trying to not buy as much & stuff price wise isnt going for much after release
It's Funny 😂 You Do An Comparison Now.. Because Earlier @ Wrk I Was Telling My Coworkers That You Do Comparison & You Had Nothing 😮.. But In All Thanks...
Great comparison! I hope to get a pair🤞🏼, I had the taxi’s back in the day but always loved this color. Taxis can come back anytime also. They keep giving us different white and black color versions that are slow close. I think next year there’s a version but they have red metallic eyelets 🙄.
You definitely never owned any OG pairs or the retros from the late 90s and early 2000s. They can't get the shape right and the materials are trash on most releases. I will say they did a pretty good job on the black cement 2s and the SB 4s.
The Jordan 12 "Rising Sun" colorway was indeed controversial, as it drew inspiration from the "Rising Sun Flag," which is associated with Japan's imperial history. Due to this historical connection, it was banned from release in South Korea and China, and the marketing approach was altered. This controversy highlighted the importance of considering cultural sensitivities when designing and releasing products. (From chat gpt)
Thanks for the comparison 💯. I see what you’re saying with the Jumpman tab on the originals. Back around 2016-17 I picked up a pair of deadstock OG Taxi’s for $100 (couldn’t believe it myself), only issue was the plastic on the tabs were deteriorating. I bought a beater pair of the 04 low top taxi 12’s and removed the Jumpman tab on those to put on the OG’s. Restitched the threading and used Barge to glue them in place. I got a review of them my channel. I picked up these “Cherries” today. Excited to add them to collection, never had a pair.
If it’s true that phylon last way longer then polyurethane, then I think it would be cool if they made the older Jordan’s like the 3s, 4s ext out of phylon instead that way they’ll last longer and be more durable.
Been fucking with you for a min . Subbed like my sophomore yr in high school i just started copping again heavy in 2020 . started wit me getting them UNC 3s lol.
You brought up the Rising Sun AJ 12 - a shoe I forgot about - but I’m sure the reason it was recalled was for political reasons. The flag is offensive in Korea and Japan because of its connections to imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. I remember that backlash vividly
Wore these today for about 7th time in year I’ve had , & appreciate them more w every wear….much closer to 97 , than 09. Better everything Insole full polyurethane (all OG.s should have) insoles. They gotta get the reptile print on lateral side most specifically straighter, the retros have a big hook or s curve whereas the 97 OG is more straight w slight slant. Plus i noticed the true red on 13s , the varsity on 12s & 14s also on Playoff 11a so much more vibrant. Why can’t they get that spot on Marv ? If have any idea. You know I always comeback binge watch or after wear something I enjoy reviews more after I wear more than before buying. Although when I reach back on certain OG or retros of OGs I check out your thoughts & comparisons. Happy Holidays Marv , hope everything is well. I know little ones are getting big. Time flies , probably my 5th channel, but I’ve been watching you , Chris , Jumpman Bostic since before the 2010s like 14 years. Crazy. 🫡
Jordan brand is skimping in the subtle details and those details are what make the difference to me. It’s like all the retros now are the best versions of replicas of the OG version due to it not having the exact specs. For example the slits/openings on the OG that expose the carbon shank plate are wider than the retro and the carbon is filled entirely in those slits/openings, the retro doesn’t fill in the entire space at 11:05 you can really tell the difference. Also, as you said the color is a more muted white and the retro is bright white. The OG is obviously 26 years older yet has a brighter red and I remember the OG actually looked like it was two different reds because the red on the rubber part of the midsole appeared darker because of the material it was not being the same as the leather, so the dye didn’t show the exact same while on the retro all the reds are exactly the same; you can see this at 11:41 lastly my biggest gripe is the plastic lace locks and they appear chromed out instead of brushed, possibly because it isn’t metal. I feel like they do stuff like this on purpose because the more recent Playoff 12’s either have the brushed metal on them or it’s a really good plastic made to look brushed. All that being said, I missed the drop so I’ll be casually looking for a pair at local resellers, about 1 - 2 1/2 months from now. Hopefully I can grab a pair preowned w/ box and receipt in at 8/10 to 9/10 condition under retail.
I mean a lot of it has to do with cost production and margins. A lot of casual fans don’t care for the metal eyelet detail so I understand why JB goes cheap on that. Plus it probably costs to supplement a mold for just that part alone on the shoes. There’s a lot of details missed so nothing is ever perfect. Fans want it but we don’t always get what we want. Such is life. Appreciate the comments.
Great Comparison Marv As We Speak They Good With 2023 Retro But With The 1997 OG You Can Still Wear Just Need To Reglue The Areas That Need To Be Done Because The Old Factory Glue Won’t Stick Long….I Have The OG Since 4 Years Didn’t Get Em Since The Year Of 1997 When The Shoe First Came Out I Was Stuck Wearing Payless As A 6 Year Old Boy Here
Marv, everytime I see this colorway of the 12, the first thing that pops in my mind is the Japanese flag. We all know them as the white/red 12. Knowing the design theme which is Japanese and the colorblocking, my nickname for them is the Japan 12. My favorite 12 colorway. IMO, hypebeast call it that because they are playing off the nickname for the grape 5 and concord 11, the problem is those colors are actually on the shoe box label and it says varsity red. Smaller sizes the boxes are ridiculously huge. The shape of the entire shoe is still off, you can tell this by the rays on the toebox on the lateral and medial side on the first eyelet, it's very close to the print. They should've painted the soles that shows up behind the translucent sole to give us that contrast of red. The eyelets don't go a little further down the toe box and are spaced further apart. The shoe laces are thinner and not as long. I don't mind the jumpman eyelets not being metal, just get the finish on them right like they did with the 2022 playoffs. They need to make the tongues longer/taller. The slits/gills on the translucent soles needs to have that gummy bear/smooth type texture on them. The 2023 Japan 12 is a great retro still. The OG 12 shape stands out when comparing to all the retro 12.
True As You Mentioned About Grape V & Concord XI The Boxes Even Said On Both Of Shoe Box Label On The Grape V “White/Grape Ice/New Emerald “ & Concord XI “White/Black/Dark Concord” It’s Make Sense On Both Now White/Varsity Red Named “Cherry” Threw Me Off Along With The White/Red XIII & XIV Which Is “Candy Cane In 1999 Released
@@kingdonny2169 Exactly. if you are going to nickname them it's either on the "shoe box label" or the "history" of them. And cherry/candy canes fails both of them. The nickname I decided to go with fits with the design theme and the most common name most of us know them as (White Red 12). Tinker was matching the Bulls colorway with the Japanese flag (Hinomaru). Not only I'm going by the shoe box label but the design theme/history. Even their flag, they change the color of the red. I call the White/Red 13 and14. Chicago 13 and Chicago 14.
@@kingdonny2169 I refuse to call them cherry. Everytime I hear someone refer to them as cherry, it's cringey. I ask myself this: do they even know what they are talking about? Nicknames gotta make sense. Next thing you know they will just call every white and red colorway that.
So I’m the only one who sees that the “Two 3” on the tongue of the OG is different on the 2023???? The number “3” is spaced waaay lower on the tongue on the 2023 Cherry.
It’s a couple millimeters off. Between the OG and retro, it still sits just about the third eyelet from the bottom which is the third spaced panel between the seams which all lines up with the seams that continue on the upper. Both pairs line up pretty well.
What bothers me most is that the rubber midsole on the retros (2009 and 2023) is painted and will wear off through abrasion. On the original, the material was red with no paint on it. The metal vs plastic eyelets are just another thing, along with the color difference, which was even darker on the 2009s. The originals were superior and they will never make them again. They don't want to.
Sorry. Won’t be a comparison. I don’t own the OG and don’t own the retro yet. It’s the only way to do a proper comparison because the retro is supposed to be closer to the OG than against the other retros.
