    I think it's hilarious that the ad that played just before this video was for a multi-blade cartridge style razor.

    These blades are much sharper than Derby. I'd actually say it's on the "very sharp" side of the spectrum, the opposite of Derby.

    • @joebenson528
      @joebenson528 3 года назад

      Derby is far smoother. Sharp isn't always better unless you're Turkish.

    • @AKSBSU
      @AKSBSU 3 года назад +3

      @@joebenson528 I didn't say anything about which was better. Derby doesn't work for me because it isn't sharp enough, but it could be perfect for someone else. I've used a couple of the Bic blades, and they were too sharp for me. They cut through my beard, but I was worried they could also mangle my face if I wasn't careful. I use Polsilver and Voskhod, which are much sharper than Derby but not a scalpel like Bic and Feather.

      @@joebenson528 smoother isn’t always better. Most men have tough thick hair. Sharp blades are better but requires more skill to shave with. If you’re a novice then use a dull blade. Feather blades really chop up the hair. Especially my hair is thick as tree stumps. If you use a light short strokes a sharp blade won’t cut or take off too much skin.

      These blades are deceiving, the 1st shave doesn’t tell the entire story. This blade gets significantly sharper (as in sharper than a Feather or Nacet on their 2nd shave), they are one of the sharpest there are after the coating wears off. Excellent blade, just takes a little bit to get used to its sharpness curve, it’s opposite of uncoated blades.

    This blade is my favorite. It is the most universally 'great' shave in all my razors. Wilkinson Sword is a close #2. BiC Chrome-Platinum in my Merkur Futur on a #1 mild setting is just one of the best shaves I've ever had. Also, it shaved perfectly in a very aggressive cheap razor by Dave Ocean 33 (called "Atlas") when no other blade would shave comfortably in it. It's about the same as the Wilkinson Sword in the 100-year old Gillette Old-Types for me. I think everyone's skin is a little different. I have coarse hair, but sensitive skin. The BiC CP is sharp enough to cut the hair well, but smooth enough to glide over my skin just right. I'm going to buy a 100-pack of it and a 20-pack of Wilkinson Sword and use those as my exclusive blades once I'm done using all the rest of my test blades.

    As a mid-January 2018 DE wet shaving lady, I've been testing blades from different 2 sampler packs. I've done the Derby, Dorco ST-301, and now moving to the Bic for my next test.

    This shows that blades are probably the most YMMV topic in tradshaving community. I find the bics to be one of the sharpest blades, certainly on par with nacet or 7oc black. Definitely sharper than astras, probably less sharp than feathers. A very smooth blade as well, I used this blade with my new r41 daily for a week and I didn't even have a weeper during this period. I'm very happy with it!

    Here's the dirty secret about Bics: the second third and fourth shave are better than the first as the coating wears off the blade edge.

      I think they are great if you get a good batch. However BICs quality control leaves a lot to be desired and you will get quite a few dud blades if you buy a large pack. I tend to find a decent chrome platinum blade will stay sharp for 5 shaves or more, whereas a Feather will be sharp as hell for two or three shaves then die off after that. I'm going to try a BiC in my R41 I think it would be good as Nick says here. Great shave Nick!

    I have sensitive skin AND coarse beard, so the prep is very important. When people complain about rough shaving with safety razors, usually they didn´t prep properly. Usually when the shaving day comes, before anything else I apply hair conditioner in my beard and leave it for a minimum of 5min to help soften the beard. Then I take my shower, the hot water will help open the pores and soften the beard a bit more. If I don´t do that before applying the shaving cream is guaranteed I will have a rough shave, cuts in my face and skin all irritated.

      ***** well when you first start out you have NO idea - first razor - mild medium or aggressive OC or normal - butterfly, 3 piece, stainless. mercer, EJ, Ikon etc.. they are all good - then brush - boar, badger, horse or synthetic and what knot size - wood horn or poly handle then soap or cream and which one and which brush for each - then their are a million blades - take just persona for example you have labs crystal, red, or med prep and confusing packaging to boot lol you get the idea + you only get to try one combination a day at most so it takes a while... I actually like the variety it makes it more like a hobby but it does get expensive... like any good hobby. OH and I'm not even talking about the bowl, stand, pre and after shave, alum and other stuff I can't think of right now haha :)

    My Favourite Blade. Bought one of those sample packs with various types of blades. Feathers tended to be too aggressive, Derby's tended to be too mild. Personna Platinum reds were ok but were useless after one shave, not particularly sharp either, the rest unremarkable. Bic's by far the best for me.

    Hey nick,
    I understand what you intend with smooth, but I question if that's the best word.
    Smooth could also refer to how easily the blade moves through hair, especially across and against the grain. If I find a dull blade skipping when going across the grain, it's hard for me to call that smooth even if it doesn't cut or irritate me.

RUclips definitely has to improve that voice recognition!

    The Bic chrome platinum's I experience very different than you did. In sharpness they are way up there for me, only topped by Feathers. It has been my favorite blade for a long time but is passed by, by the Astra SS because they are smoother for me.
    The comparison with Derby's was interesting to me because Derby's perform very poorly for me. A clear example of YMMV.

    They are comfortable to use but too mild for me. In my Yaqi DOC Slant, when I did a full shave (3+ passes) at 6 pm, with an ASP I wouldn't have to shave again the next morning.
    But with the BIC there were already visible stubbles the next morning...
    ASPs are way sharper, and Feather is way sharper than ASP. Personally I really like Feathers as it keeps the shave short.
    As they say: YMMV.

      100 % agree.
      They must be very inconsistent. Some people claim they're really sharp, almost as much as feathers. Others say they're "smooth" (I don't know how "smooth" became a synonym for "dull", especially when it comes to shaving). They can't be both. Only explanation I can come up with is that their quality control must be non-existent. They'll make some very sharp, some very dull. Guess which you're gonna get...
      I find them pretty much unusable (at least the pack I got). It's the closest I can imagine to shaving with a cheese grater. Your face gets bloody and sore, yet you don't get even remotely close shave. That's quite an achievement - to f**k up your face without actually shaving much hair. Unbelievable.
      I actually think the Wilkinson blade I just threw away after a week of daily shaving was still performing better than the Bic straigth out of the box.

    What do you do with your blades when the pack doesn't come with a blade bank?

    • @donfraysier5079
      @donfraysier5079 8 лет назад +1

      I don't know what Nick does with his blades when there is no blade bank, but I learned something from a Geo Fat boy video: Put the used blade in the wrapper from a new blade (It's better if it's a double wrapper), and then snap the blade in half, lengthwise. After this, just put it in the trash. Geo said not to put more than one used blade in the wrapper(s), or you could cut yourself. Anyway, this is my method of disposal, if there is no blade bank.

      I put them in an empty matches box usually

      +Adrian Negreanu then usually put them in the recycle bin, or at my local pharmacy they take them for disposal

      michael z are the blades small enough to fit through the mouth of the can? I took a plastic mentos gum container and cut a slit in the top for the blades.

    Since you're an experienced, well-seasoned wet shaver, and your prep is good, and your lather game is ice cold, and you have your technique locked in, I am thinking this series will show you that you can get a good shave using just about any blade.
    Obviously there will be some standout performers, but I'm thinking you can baby out a passable shave from even the shittiest blades.

      ***** my face never gets messed up, even with crap razors, I just lather some dove bar soap and shave away with a disposable razor lol

      ***** I think Nick can determine fairly well what works without going against the grain.
      It didn't take more than a single blade stroke on the very first north-south pass for me to know that Dorcos, Derbys, and Personna Labs just weren't gonna work for me as well as Feathers.

      +Emmanuel Goldstein not everyone can go against the grain. for an everyday shaver it's painful to go against everyday. I also wasn't blessed with tough leather skin. when nick shaves he shaves with a day growth maybe 2. any blade works with only a day or 2 growth. technique is the key to a good shave when it comes to DE and straight. blades are subjective technique is everything. from the lather to your strokes and angle. nick is an every day shaver and his technique trumps shave supplies in the end.

    One day of growth? So not only are you tall with good hair, but your facial hair isn’t like barbed wire after a day? I’m just a wee bit jelly of your genes.

    Just ordered a 100 of the fuckers! Probably a lifetime supply 4 me. So thought I'd get the skinny on 'em.
    Only wet shave in the shower, so that's once a week. So probably 5 years supply.
    69 don't hold for any future crap. Weasels ripped my skin.

    Man 4 passes? Jeez! I always make 1 pass only and already get a smooth nice shave. When you shaved against the grain I cringed.

    • @Mikey-ym6ok

      Nothing wrong shaving against. With enough practice you can shave against the grain wish ease and no irritation. One pass isn’t enough, it’ll give ya a 4 o clock shadow.

    I’ve tried about 10 different blades since starting this hobby, and Derby are in my personal garbage tier. They work just fine, but it feels like I’m scraping the hair off my face in the most unpleasant way possible.

    Used one of these yesterday and it was the worst shave ever. Reviews seem to be about 50/50, but they are not for me. I don't think I have ever had so many nicks.
